Pavillion dv6: try to Dual-Boot Ubuntu with Windows 10 (Windows 7 upgrade)

I try to dual-boot Windows 10 with Ubuntu 15.04, but realize that this is not possible, because laptops HP reached default limit partition of 4 primary partitions.

I have the following partitions:

199 MB - system

533.5 GB - C:\

20.38 GB - recovery (D:\)

103 MB - HP_TOOLS

42 GB - no limit (I intend to make an extended partition with 3 logical partitions for home, root and swap for Ubuntu)

My question is, which of these partitions should I back up and delete, and how to create a backup for this? I want to make a new partition extended to 3 logical partitions with host, root and exchange for Ubuntu.

Another thing to note is I had originally from Windows 7, but I have upgraded to Windows 10and used CCleaner to remove the old files of Windows 7.

The info below is a response that typically post on the forums Ubuntu on situations like yours:

Since you have already four partitions, this is the maximum allowed. Remove just HP_TOOLS is not the solution - as it is too small to be of any use.

So first, copy all files and folders inside the HP_TOOLS partition in your OS Win10 partition.

Second, open the Win 10 disk management tool.  NOW you can delete the partition HP_TOOLS.

Thirdly, shrink the Win10 OS partition to make room on the disk. Win10 is very skittish about its partition to the OS being messed up
with "outside" with other tools - like GParted. Although it is OK, it is more likely to cause filesystem corruption, which will then make Win10 no longer starts.

Fourth, you need a way, in the future, to restore Win10 in its current state - and you can do it without using the
Recovery partition.  Download and install the free version of Macrium Reflect.  Plug an external hard drive and use MR for
image out of the OS Win10 and its partition on this disk.  Then, use the MR option to create a USB startup key.

Now, using this USB key, you can restore your current configuration of the Win10 of this backup.

Fifth, you can now return to the Win10 disk management tool and remove the recovery partition. Do not format the free space, leave it as what.

  • Install Ubuntu with Windows 10 problems.

    Hello

I had problems trying to install Ubuntu with Windows 10 (and Linux Mint also has problems). When I try to mount my hard drive (with 10 Windows on it), it says that Windows is put into hibernation. I want to install Ubuntu with Windows and not to clean install. Ubuntu detects my external hard drive and said: «There are currently no operating system installed...» ', but it does not detect my hard drive with Windows 10 on it.

    Thanks for any help,

    DaComputer Guy

Sometimes, when the quick start is activated, it can cause Linux to correctly identify the Windows partition as being in the State of hibernation. Try to disable the quick start and see if it solves the problem:

    1. open the Control Paneland turn the mode icons

    2. in the list, go to Power Options

    3. in the left pane, click choose the power buttons what

    4. scroll down and uncheck the Quick start

  • How dual boot Vista and Windows 7

I'm using vista Home premium and want to install windows 7 a.m. premium as a dual boot. If I decide later by far with windows vista and keep only 7 How can proceed?

Assuming that my OS is windows 7 can I use the same disk of vista on the virtual machine with the same product key.

Vista and 7 cannot exist on the same partition as a dual boot? How to do it.

Is ther to disadvantages in dual boot?

There are no real problems with dual boot if it's Setup corrrectly.

You need operating systems on separate partitions (readers not necessarily distinct, but definitely separate from the partitions).

If you uninstall Vista later and it's a copy to the details of the program, then you can install it in a virtual drive using the same product key (but you'll probably need to activate manually).

Here's how Dual boot Vista with Widows7: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/5166-dual-boot-installation-windows-7-vista.html.

Although written for other systems, the process to remove a dual boot will work with Windows7 and Vista (although you may need to use the commands and Windows7 disk): http://vistasupport.mvps.org/remove_windows_vista_from_dual_boot_system.htm depending on the situation and that was installed first.

    I hope this helps.

    Hello Timbay1,

Thanks for posting on the Microsoft answers Forum.

What has changed in your environment, as it was working before and now does not work? Have you installed any new software or updates?
It can be 3rd party software created a conflict with your codecs and you need to re - register.

You could check and see if you have compatible Codecs installed in Windows Vista.
or you can try to use the codec for Vista Codec Pack - pack

There are other 3rd party codecs but I can't guarantee that they will work with Windows Vista.

Please answer back with an update.
