PE T300 PERC6 / I RAID stalls

SBS 2003 SP2 RAID-5 is suspended. Power failure lasts 2 to 3 minutes. Retrieves himself.
No sign of HARD drive failure.

Interferes with WIN 2003 / 2003 Exch work jobs. Various period tasks.

Cannot find malware.

Happened a few months, but I think it's gradually worsens.

I've seen a few isolated logging Windows associated with BBU on PERC6 / I but calls for the DELL battery backup server admin is fine.  There is no order so I guess that PERC comes with it by default.

I would appreciate any helpful suggestion.

From what you have posted, the learning Cycle has just completed, so if that corresponds to the timing of the issue you described, which is probably the cause.

Firmware BIOS is clear - it is the Foundation of all system equipment.

ESM (Embedded Server Management) / controller BMC (Baseboard Management Controller) works collaboratively with the BIOS to manage server hardware and is mainly responsible for the monitoring of the components.

The PERC firmware is the interface between the system and the readers.  Drivers must be updated before the firmware.

Drive HARD firmware is the interface between the controller and the storage medium real.  Firmware PERC and firmware HARD disk must always be at least late to provide smoother operation between the two.

On your screen, your BIOS driver and PERC and firmware are up to date.  The latest version of the BMC is 2.50:

The latest version of the firmware for the drive seems to be MA0D.  The update is a bootable utility that flashes all Dell readers for the latest firmware:

    Hello

We have a Dell T300 with the SAS 6/iR adapter.

    We have a RAID1 with 2 x 3 TB drives (visible only 2 TB).

I have updated the firmware on the SAS adapter to the latest version available here:

and now the RAID 1 has disappeared!

We have a lot of important data on this virtual drive so any help would be appreciated.

    Thank you!

    Jerry.

    Hi Josh,.

Thanks for getting back to me. The physical connections and the disks were good and they appeared in the update controller RAID configuration. But the virtual drive RAID1 had disappeared.

I solved the problem by downgrading to an earlier version of the firmware.

If I had read the README of the first firmware upgrade page completely, I would have noticed:

The migration of the SAS 6/iR controllers PERC6 controller RAID Volumes is only supported for volumes created originally on 6/iR controllers SAS running review FW 00.25.47.00 or later version.

I was able to locate a FW version 00.20.48 here.

The executable flash.bat refused to downgrade the FW version

However, looking at the .bat files, I could see that flash.bat called xflash.bat called sasflash.exe which is a LSI utility to upgrade the firmware of the card.

I found an old manual with the arguments that sasflash.exe take here and use the switch - fwdown to wipe the card and firmware downgrade.

When the server has started upward the virtual drive was back. Phew!

Guess I'll read the Readme next time?

    Thank you for your attention,

    Jerry.

  • ESXI4 installation, best practices RAID, Stripe size, VD, the partitions?

    Hi all

    I have server Dell Poweredge PE2970 with PERC6 / I and PERC6/E RAID controllers.

and the Bay of Dell Powerwault MD1000 storage.

    PERC6 / I is conducted 6 x 150 GB, 10,000 rpm, SATA drives. (560 GB RAID 6) and,

    PERC6/E is engine x 15 x 1 TB 5400 RPM, SATA drives. (12 to RAID 6)

This combination is used to provide iSCSI and NFS services for film and music production environment.

I plan to create 3x100Gb, 1x200Gb, and 1x60Gb virtual disks of 560 GB RAID 6 array.

60 GB to install VMware ESXI4 and StorMagic SvSAN.

100 GB for virtual machines (Linux, Windows, NFS, AD, backup, servers etc.)

100 GB for Audio iSCSI (work Pro Tools disk)

100 GB for video iSCSI (work Pro Tools disk)

200 GB for iSCSI Virtual Instruments (used by Pro tools)

and 6 x 2 TB of storage, backups, etc.

How to create these virtual disks when I create RAID arrays?

    What Strip size to use?

How about this VD 60 'system' VD ESXI4 and SvSAN, or 100 GB 'virtual machine' for other servers?

I had to do it like this, or should I create a 160 GB VD, for all the servers and facilities of ESXI?

or should I create a VD to each their own?

I mean like VD 1 GB for ESXI4, 25 GB (two partitions of 5 GB and 20 GB) VD for SvSAN, VD (two partitions 40 GB and 40 GB) 80 GB for Windows server.

5 GB VD for Audio Linux NFS, 100 GB VD for iSCSI server, etc. In this solution, I could choose a different distribution for each VD size.

I know this isn't the best solution, and in the future I could replace all the drives 10,000 rpm with fast SSDS 32 GB (128 GB RAID6)

for the system and servers, and have a second table MD1000 for iSCSI disks dedicated 10,000 rpm. But for now, it's how to deal with.

All suggestions and advice are welcome.

    Concerning

    Petzu

We create a 5120 MB vd for esxi installation.  5121 actually like the perc bios rounds.

Then we can recreate all installing esxi without touching anything else.

The virtual machine are limited in the size of their maximum vmdk. For example, you could create just the minimum number of data warehouses.

Keep it simple and straightforward unless you have a specific reason to diverge.

Let me paraphrase what mentions a dev to vmware, (it was in what concerns the amendment of vmfs default block size and I like to think that it is also applied to vmware Scheduler, a great great piece of programming). "We optimize, so you can just go with the default value and know he's going to do the right thing."

The default size of the distribution is a good compromise, optimized to work under most workloads; different size block sizes can have radically different performance based on the workload characteristics.  The default value works well and 2008 and later versions of the most recent vm of windows properly aligned on 64 k.

Dell has a ton of technical documents by comparing the performance of raid levels.  Already a few months that we are talking about performance raid comparng and I whimper.

If it needs to be super fast I pick up 10, lots of space 5, more reliable but more space, and then from 10 to 6.

Dell technology said that most of the people raid 5, because disk is so reliable.

We use raid 6 for reliability on volumes in addition to 12. Depending on the level of incorrigible error on a raid of 12 to rebuild.

http://m.ZDNet.com/blog/storage/why-RAID-6-stops-working-in-2019/805 (which implies an ure 1214 and I think I'm 12 years old company records15 ure).

The backup raid controller cache battery alleviates some of the supposed raid 6 over raid 5 performance drops.

In your case I use raid 5 for warehouses of operational data for performance and raid 6 for the backup data store.

In addition a synthetic benchmark not always told you the return you will get with a real application in an operating system.

When we first virtualized mysql, according to our benchmark iometer, we thought performance would be an order of magnitude worse. In practice, they were good enough that we went hog wild and virtualized of many others.  You should always be aware of the performance characteristics of your application.

For example, we have two pairs of distinct mysql replication, and each of them get their own volume 5 disc on the md1000 even.

Heterogeneous workloads on the same volume of mixture, specifically servers oversees with lots of random file io and vm with support for example sequential access will hurt the performance of the database.  ESXI 4.1 storage io control feature is designed to mitigate this.

The funniest on the axles and raid controllers, it's that sometimes a lot of slower batteries will out perform less higher speed axes.

If you think you aggregate read the md1000 on performs faster small volume.

Battery learn cycle is running all 90 days or more and turn off the cache writeback, which hurt performance. He must run because the cache battery degrades over time, and he needs to know when the battery lasts less than 24 hours.  It determines this by measuring the time it takes to recharge.

We have never noticed this or necessary to adjust it to our server by default openmanage farm, I just thought I would mention it because we were on a subject very.

Install openmanage for esxi.  Disable the cache on individual disks, as this cache is not battery backup.

Don't forget to document your config, because it won't remember what you were doing when you do a recovery.

You meet a problem with the raid not being loaded driver. You have a few different options. You can download and burn the ISo on the disk and boot him - http://downloads.dell.com/FOLDER00651629M/1/cdu_2.1_core_339.iso

You can also start the OS media and then at the F6 prompt to load 3rd pilots group, you can submit this driver file - http://downloads.dell.com/FOLDER00353693M/1/SAS-RAID_Driver_CN08G_WN32_2.24.0.64_A07.EXE

With the material you listed, the T610 and Perc6 / I'd be able to use the remaining locations. It's because you have the SAS0 and cables DIS1 (5FM3N and RM255) that run on both sides of the bottom of basket.

In a brief comment, Perc 6 / I can support much more server can contain, because it supports up to 32 drives per virtual disk and up to 64 virtual disks by Perc 6 / i.

  • Replacing the drive PowerEdge T300 RAID 1 stuck on the 'Reconstruction '.

    Hi all

I have a T300 with disks SAS 4 x 136GB on a SAS 6/ir adapter, 2 x in RAID 1 and x 2 independent. Some time ago, one of the disks came with "Failure predicts" so I deleted one of the independent disks and then in OMSA set it as a global hot spare. After a minute or two, it's status changed in 'Reconstruction '.

Unfortunately, he's sitting on the 'Reconstruction' for about 3 weeks now and I'm a little reluctant to it reboot as I do always once a month.

I am missing a step or do something wrong? Reconstructions by car it takes long?

    See you soon,.

    Dan

    Blackseicento,

Normally a reconstruction will take up to 24 hours, depending on the size, to rebuild. With her, sit for 3 weeks, it seems that there is a problem. Now to start, using OpenManage Server Administrator to view rebuild progress? If so the reader may have already rebuilt, but OMSA is false. If you haven't done so already, restart the OMSA services and it is. After that, then restart the OMSA and check to see if the State is always rebuild. If so, then restart the server for the raid controller and check the status of the virtual disks as well as the physical disk that you replaced.

Let me know what you see.

  • Disc question PowerEdge T300 Perc 6 / I Raid 5

I have a PowerEdge T300 with Perc 6 / I and Raid 5 with 3 hot swap 15 k 146 GB disks and 1 hot spare in the fourth slot from the backplane. Drive HARD 0 is orange flashing while HDD1 thru HDD3 are green. I have a new hard drive to install. I have to restart under the Perc 6 / I installation, disable HDD0, then turn the power off and replace it and walk back in Perc 6 / I and add the new disk and restart. Drive HARD 0 rebuild in the table or what I need to assign the new drive as the new hot spare? Are there instructions on how to replace a drive like that?

    Thank you

    Mark

Once in the controller and you can just physically pull the failed drive. After removing, then wait a moment and insert the new drive. If the virtual disk has been degraded, then it should start to rebuild on its own once the replacement is inserted. If the virtual disk has been Optimal, then physically pull the drive and insert the replacement. Then in the BIOS OF THE controller, you can configure the replacement as a hot spare.

  • RAID 5 array on PERC6 / I offline

OK, so we have a 2970 with a PERC6/i. 5 disks in a RAID 5 array and a hot spare. I apparently lost two readers today, one failed and the other started showing as a foreign config. I erased the foreign config and I replaced the drive, but now on my table, I show 3 disks and 2 marked pitches "missing." How can I make this table back online and ready to go without deletion and creation of a new VD? Thanks in advance...

    IMPORT

Used ONLY when the array is offline (non-functional/failed). If you have a 3-drive RAID 5 and two disks are foreign (or a stranger, a failure or missing), RAID 5 is dead and off line. You must import it in this case. If you replace a drive has failed/foreigners with a new and a new is marked as foreign and you import, you will corrupt your data.

    CLAIRE

Used ONLY when the table is online (upward and running, functional). If you have a 3-drive RAID 5 and a single drive foreign shows (which means that the disc is also offline), you must DELETE it (if it is an original or a replacement drive), and then assigned as a hot spare.

In general, once you clear the foreign configuration, you do not get a second chance - the disc is in a ready state.

  • Dell RAID 10 PERC6i reference limits?

It is probably a stupid question but,

Dell online shop Configurator does not allow PERC6i RAID 10 configurations more 3.6 TB. Sniff autour on google, it seems, there is a limit artificial store (Dell system images do not go over this size?), and the underlying PERC6i does not have such a limitation.

Just to check, anyone currently running a host ESXi 4 with a Dell PERC6i with a RAID 10 volume greater than 3.6 to?

I know that I can get around the limit of store by selecting for RAID5 and simply recreate the RAID volume once the waiter comes.

I'm not aware of any limitation of size of volume with this controller.  However, as noted above for ESX (i) the table should include the LUNS not larger than (2 TB - 512 bytes).

The annoying limitation of the Perc 5i and 6i controllers, it is only for RAID 10 and RAID 50, only a single LUN occupying all available space can be created.  So to use all the disks in a single Bay RAID 5 or RAID 6 are needed, and with SATA drives because of the size of reliability issue and that really then limits the choice of RAID-6 - as well as its IO write sentence 6.

  • Failed to create full-size VMFS Datastore on large virtual disk on Dell R710 5 2 t + 1, Raid 5 PERC6i controller

ESXi4, I installed it on my Dell R710. She has 6 1 TB on PERC6i SAS drives, 5 discs do Raid 5 with hot spare disk 1. And I created 3 VD, 1 is from 40 GB to install the OS, 2 is 1 TB to contain the model ISO and VM and 3 is 2.6 TB to contain the VM.

After installing ESXi4, I found only 2 created Datastore: 2. 39 GB 1 Datastore and 1 TB data store no data store has been created on the VD 2.6 TB.

I tried to create it manually, but I found that only 635 GB in size can be created on this 2.6 t. Why? As I remembered ESXi4 can support up to 64 TB VMFS Datastore.

    The BIOS is 1.0.4.

    Someone had the idea?

Take a look at this "vSphere and 2 TB LUN has changed VI3.x.

    http://virtualgeek.typepad.com/virtual_geek/2009/06/vSphere-and-2TB-LUNs-changes-from-vi3x.html

Oh, a data store to 64 would consist of 32 degrees to ~ 2 TB. The limit on the size of the LUN behind the data store is 512 b less than 2 TB

  • Reference Dell T300 RAID additional Install

Currently I have a T300 Dell with a RAID 1. Current readers are almost complete, so I have 2 drives more than I am about to install in another RAID 1 on the server. Ask yourself what are the steps needed to do this successfully.

    Currently, I plan the following:

    1 stop server

    2. install the new discs on the front of the server.

3 Server boot in OS (Server 2008)

    4. use the Dell software to configure new RAID 1.

    Is that going to succeed?

    1 skip this step.

    2. install new disks on the front of the [hot] Server.

    3. no need to 'boot' in OS.

4 use the Dell [OMSA] software to configure new RAID 1.

    Hello everyone!

    I have a big problem with a PE 2950 with a perc6 / i ctrl and raid 5 system.

disc number 5 amber flashing and the brand utility player as incorrect.

I replaced the drive and now it blinks green... but... I can't rebuild the disk!

How to do? I started the utility bios (CTRL + R at the start), and she acknowledged the new disk as foreign.

When I hit F2 (operation button) on the new drive, I can only start or stop flashing. The menu of reconstruction is not available...

    How can I do?

    I'll import the foreign config?

Thank you all in advance for your help,

    See you soon,.

    Steve

If it is the spare foreign reports object import configuration because it was never part of the RAID array.

The status of your RAID 5 is degraded? If so, you can tab over foreigners view tab, press F2 on controller 0 and select this option for foreign claire under foreign Config.

This should put the replacement drive in a ready state, from which you can choose to assign as a global hot spare, which will inaugurate a new building.

    1. you can't cross flash OEM and retail drives. You can try to force it, but if you google, you will find it bricks readers about half the time. Best option is to make sure that all are certified OEM. Next best is to ensure that all are retail. Better next time, if you mix them, is to ensure that all disks are at their last respective revisions.

    2. only certain types of discs can be updated from the operating system. Most of them, you need to start updating the media.
