PERC 6i present foreign Config

Hello, I am relatively new to raid Perc Controllers and their troubleshooting.

I inherited a server that works very well in recent weeks.

Today, we met this error: present foreign Config

Curiously, it seems to be a problem of memory on the server e today as well. He showed a bad memory config on a Poweredge 2900 server.  I removed the small DIMM and kept only the 4 4 GB modules.

It is a working server and I know of all the existing backups on that I just inherited from the customer (who had to cease their activities, but still to deal with tax information once per month)

One of the disks is orange flashing. The rest are green. RAID 5, 4 disks.

What should I do to get this unit up?

Thank you. See attached picture

I hope this is the correct log file?

It is the newspaper of alerts. Here are the instructions to make using OMSA controller log:

http://en.community.Dell.com/TechCenter/systems-management/w/wiki/6465.how-to-export-the-RAID-log-with-OpenManage-Server-Administrator-OMSA

Once you have the log file, you can try the import. I suggest you keep the controller and the system/equipment for you event log records. You may encounter problems later and have these logs to make reference to could help in the future.

Thank you

  • PERC 6 / I foreign config disk / how do I erase a disc

    Hello

I replaced a RAID-5 disk with a hot spare that already has a foreign Config on that. I want to delete the config to the hand, I can scratch the disc so it will be detected as empty? (DD if = / dev/null of = / dev/sda)

    Best regards

    Eddy

    hottfix
is this drive or the drives part of a raid configuration or drive tottaly does not work in the raid 5 or raid 1?

Neither.  He is not currently a member of an array, but foreigners does not mean that it is totally "does not work".  The controller detected a configuration on the drive that does not match the other (s) in the table, so he scored like aliens until the admin can determine the best course of action for this.  It's absolutely a dangerous thing to (leave the admin to know the right thing to do with it), but this prevents the controller having to make decisions about the data, which makes it the responsibility of the admin to learn the skills needed to manage this live/die.

You have two options with foreign configurations:

IMPORT - must never be used when multiple disks are marked strangers simultaneously, including moving leads to a new controller/system, etc. and must be used when an array is offline.

CLAIRE - should be used whenever the table is online and only one drive is marked foreign (or several disks in case it's a RAID 10/50/60, but the picture is still online). It is usually the case when a disk fails (or is a failure) or simply disconnects due to a timeout, etc. and is often the case when replacing a failed drive in an array.  Only after the cancellation of the foreign configuration the drive is possible a hot spare for the table in order to rebuild the disk in the array.

  • PERC 6 / I foreign configuration

I have a Raid 5 running as usual, but add more space. When I added 3 new readers he invites me I have a foreign configuration.

My question is if I import the configuration or to erase the configuration I'll lose my existing good running raid.

Right. In VD MGMT, select controller, F2, foreign, clear. The new disks will then view under loan and you can create a new/separate with them or add them to your current table to decompress (if you are interested in the latter case, what size are the readers)?

  • PERC 5 - no Configuration is present! Foreign import can damage the hard disk data ("this is an irreversible process)?

Our 2950 has humming well when...

Physical disk 0 change LED color from green to flashing orange.

Configuring Raid 0 has 2 two identical disks combined into a VD.

To troubleshoot an amber blink, we re sitting readers and even swapped their location, ultimately restore their substantive positions of basket in their original locations.

Suddenly, amber LED changed to green new!

However, the server is unbootable-"zero or logical drives found".

Reports PERC 'no present Configuration!' in the config of VD but also two reports 2 error free readers in the config of PD.  He also pointed out a 1 DG and VD (1) and (2) PD in config stranger (contrary to what config VD reports - "no present Configuration."

Ubuntu in rescue (booted from the CD) mode does not see two physical disks.

    What should we do?

Thanks in advance - this server hosts the web services of a not-for-profit organization.

Excuse the rawness, but you need to know about the functioning of the RAID and this server before trying anything. There are many places in which he could definitely bad (I'm not saying that isn't already).

Start the utility CTRL-R, VD MGMT screen, highlight the controller, F2, foreign Import.

If she fails to import, go to the CTRL MGMT screen and give me the version of the firmware of the lot.

Next time, call Dell technical support or ask a question here to help them know what to do and how to solve it.

  • PERC 310 RAID 0 with drive in foreign State

I "inherited" a T5600 with PERC H310 controller with two 500 GB drives, put in place by a former employee in RAID 0 (at least from what I can tell - I don't know why he chose the RAID 0).  After a recent audit of security disk 0 is the 'foreign' State on the screen of PD Mgnt and Drive 1 is online.  I searched and found a lot of info on how to import or clear the foreign configuration, but I don't understand this option when you press F2 on any page.  I can't tell if Drive 1 is bad or just considered "foreign" because they took the cable.  I was not present during the audit, and I'm beginning to wonder if they pulled the cable while the system worked.  He seemed fine after their verification, until I got IO errors when you access certain partitions (Oracle Linux 6.3).  After a reboot, I went into the BIOS H310 config and saw the following:

The VD Mgmt page showed only the disk 0, RAID 0 group (no virtual disk or foreign Physics).

    The foreign view page States:

    • Disk group: 0, RAID 0
    • ID of the virtual disk: 1GB 465,25
    • Disc 01Physics: online: 465,25 GB
    • Disk group: 1, RAID 0
    • Virtual disk ID: 0, 465,25 GB
    • Disk physical 00: online: go 465,25 (foreigner)

The virtual and physical disk for Disk Group 1 properties are grayed out.

The PD Mgmt page shows 00 foreign State and drive 01 State online

I tried swapping the cables and saw the following changes:

    The foreign view page States:

    • Disk group 0, RAID 0
    • Virtual disk ID 1, Go 465,25
    • Disk physical 00: online: 465,25 GB
    • Disk group: 1, RAID 0 (foreigners)
    • Virtual disk ID: 0, 465,25 GB
    • Disc 01Physics: online: go 465,25 (foreigner)

Yet once, 1 group of virtual disk and physical properties are grayed out.

The PD Mgmt page shows 00 State online and drive 01 foreign State

Do I have a bad disc or just a bad virtual drive?  Y at - it a hope of recovering without reinstalling?  Still, I do not get the ability to import on any page of the configuration of the BIOS H310.

    Thank you.

    AZ_Traveler,

You will need to do is to import the foreign configuration. To do this, you will need access to the controller, after, you will be on the VD MGMT page. From there highlight the controller in the list above, once highlight then hit the "F2" and select foreign Config. From there, you'll need to import the foreign Configuration.

After this can access the OS and see if i/o errors continue.

Let me know how it goes.

  • Cannot remove HARD disk configuration PERC 6i with use of the SAS drives foreign. Existing data are not important. Scratch reloading to redeploy the server.

Dell Poweredge 2950 III with serial number note from the Admin: have the label removed according to the TOU > receipt readers traded since an identical poweredge almost eliminated. In the configuration of the PERC controller 0 6i utility, disk groups show as foreigners. Messages following the procedure to import the configuration, then remove before was not effective. The prior configuration appears in the menu.

I would like to simply clean configurations of VD for the readers and the controller. After it is deleted then next step is to set up a configuration I want. My new Setup is not relevant for this post. The goal and the only question is how to clear existing shared disk configurations.

VD0 clear addition to figure 2 SAS PD/hard drives as virtual disk unique. RAID levels 0, status is offline, SMART status not = no error, County VD = 1, PD = 2 count, operation = none

    Is a similar to VD0 VD1

    other berries are currently empty.

For initial troubleshooting I have removed all the HARD drive except a single disk on the server. This disc shows also as stranger.

In the PERC 6i config utility:

VD MGMT doesn't show CONTROLLER0 - no configuration is present. Choice of the F2 are Config. Foreign config based on availability. (Create new VD and manage preserved Cache are greyed out) Right pane of the screen indicates "foreign Config present, controller prop.: DG = 0, County VD count = 0, County of PD = 1".

PD MGMT shows only the formatted Mo 139 K SAS single, foreign = State, SMART status not is no mistake, operation = none

VIEW FOREIGNERS shows DG0 = foreign, Virtual disk 255 with DG count = 1. County of VD = 1, County of PD = 1

I installed 3 of the disks individually rotating as a single HARD drive with similar results.

WITH 2 HDD SAS installed only difference is VD Mgmt shows County DG = 0, County VD = 0, County of PD = 2.   View foreign shows VD255 prop: Raid 0, Raid = foreign status, size = na, operation = none. | Disk prop group. : VD Count = 1, County of PD = 2, Ded HS = 0 (because it does not exist).

Thanks Chris. Problem is solved. I would like to Flash the firmware as precautionary measure? Still confused why initial in the VD Mgmt tab procedure has failed.

All readers of Restore tab PD-ready state.

  • How to erase the hard drive, foreign State in T630 with H730 PERC controller

I recently bought a Poweredge T630 Server computer configured with a PERC H730 controller and two 1 TB SATA (raid 1) drives.

The controller H730 being compatible with no dell certified readers, I bought 2 WD red label records to add more storage space.  The problem I have is it H730 one of the 2 WD drives senses as a 'foreign' drive  Under "available tasks", I see only two options, "Blink" and "Unblink.  Unlike other HDD WD, the controller does not allow me even an option to convert the capable RAID drive.  This only happens to one of the two WD drives. The WD with 'Foreign State' drive is not defective or damaged.  How can I clear the foreign flag on one of the two WD drives so that I can convert the two disks in RAID ready status.

    Hello

You have a foreigners view tab when you are in the bios H730? If you do, you should be able to use ctrl + N to access this screen, select the controller, press F2 and go to foreign config and have the ability to clear the foreign configuration.

  • PERC 6 / I imported foreign configuration is incorrect

Hi there, we have PowerEdge 2950 with ESX 3.5. Until our problem, we 4x750GB RAID 5 config. Week ago, we found that drive in location 1 is down, as usual remove us it and replaced again, next day there show that is to die. OK, in the PERC BIOS utility, it has been disconnected, next day we started backing up the data of the ESX Server, but during this process storage had disappeared from the ESX Server, after reboot THAT PERC told us that there is no RAID config and he held foreign config. We open the PERC BIOS utility and then import foreign config, but RAID level is now 10 (ie use discs 0,2,3) total storage size is 1.3 TB! We restart the server, ESX is running but with VM storage is missed :(

My question is, can I delete current VD of the PERC BIOS utility and create new VD with disk HARD 0,2,3 (1 is offline) RAID 5 without initializing it?

    Any suggestions?

    Thank you!

    Mnemoic,

With Raid 5, after offline due to enter a foreign configuration, you should have wiped out foreigners. Now with the table as it is currently, what we need to do to get it back would be to start the Perc BIOS and "Retag" of the table. To do this, we recreate the table as it was configured initially, but less initialization. If you initialize the array after you configure, it would remove the data. So you have to hit F2 on the main page. Select Create VD. From there on, configure the Raid 5 with the same discs. Once you set up, and DO NOT INITIALIZE the array, then you will equip the server. While in offline mode, remove the drive which did not. Once the original failed drive is removed, the power of the server and see if it will boot the operating system normally.  If so, then I suggest to get a complete backup of the data. After that then make sure the Raid Controller is current on firmware and update if necessary. Once it's over, then reinsert the defective drive and see if it rebuilt. If this is not the case, then replace the drive.

Let me know if it helps.

  • How to add my 'fired' drive back to RAID1, PERC H710P and erase or foreign configurations...

    Hello

I just got a PowerEdge T620. The OS is in RAID1 (two 256 GB SSD), controlled by a H710P PERC controller.

When the computer was OFF, I took one of the discs, to see what it was the brand. (I bought the computer from a dealer and I wanted to just make sure I got what I paid for ). In any case, after you turn the computer back on, I noticed that the small screen at the front had changed color and showed a message. I checked the message and the computer seems to work with a disk in a single well. As it is supposed to.

I decided to put the disc back in French - while the computer was OFF. I noticed, that at the start, the system is now saying:

"Configuration foreign (s) found on adapter Press any key to continue, or 'C' load the configuration utility or the 'F' to import the foreign configuration (s) foreign and continue."

I did a search on here and on Google and was able to find something that looks like a 'response' to me. However, as I have never done something like this before, I would like to ask you guys and see if I'm about to do the right thing!

-When the system boots, press Ctrl-R.

    -I get to Setup BIOS card PERC H710P 4.00 utility - 0014

-Then, I press 'Ctrl-N' until I get to the page "foreigners."

-Once there, I insist on "PERC H710P adapter (Bus 5, Dev 0).

    -Once highlighted, I press 'F2 '.

-After pressing 'F2', a window opens, which says 'Foreign Config'.

-Then I press "ENTER" and another window opens with two options:

    'IMPORT' and 'CLEAR '.

From what I have read, I need to select "DELETE?" Not sure if?

    Thank you

    G

p.s. I downloaded photographs showing the PERC BIOS...

Yes, what you call after having done, you must DELETE it, and then assigned as a hot spare.  If you import it, you will damage your table

    Hi Jess,

Before taking any measurement, please make sure you have a valid backup of your data because all operations related to foreign config can result in data loss.

For general information on foreign Config and what to do with it, please see this page of Dell:

  • Fake H710p PERC? -Firmware upgrade error

    Hallo,

I recently bought a DELL PERC's H710p to the address but I can't update the firmware or install the driver. I always get an error like:
    "No controllers present or detected."

First I thought that this is because the PERC H710p is not supported on a DELL R710 server. But after some research, I found something weird.

The reason why the update of the firmware fails is simply the fact, that the "SUBDEV = 1f38" required when updating cannot be fond. My 'H710p' has a different SUBDEV. His SUBDEV is 1f77. So my question is, I bought some controller "false"?

If this is not a 'fake' controller, what should I do to update my H710p and how to install the drivers?

    Thank you

Controllers H710 series have been tested and validated in the Dell only 12 servers (such as the PE 720) generation.   Further, check your H710p came from a Precision Workstation.  The following valid this information, which came from the file nocheck.bat for this controller:

    OFF @Echo
    CLS

    put the FW = 21.0.2 - 0002
    Set ROM = H710PAWS.rom
    SUBDEV = 1f77 set
    DOS32A = set / AC /NOWARN:9004

You will need this patch: http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/19/driverdetails?driverid=CGM2K which is the latest available for this particular controller.

The controller may or may not work in your PE710, it just has not been tested or validated.  Good luck!

    Kind regards

  • PE2900 RAID 1 GRADIENT, NEED HELP TO REBUILD PHYSICAL DRIVE SHOWS FOREIGN

My server is a Dell PowerEdge 2900 with Raid 1, using 2-1 TB HDD.

I had a problem with the server and needed to its cleaning of windows install. I need to work on files reinstall everything and did not have a large enough to back up car. For lack of time, I couldn't wait until I get a big enough drive, to remedy this I removed a HARD drive while the system was down and restarted the server. The BIOS has complained about a foreign configuration and made me enter the PERC 5 / i (CTRL + R) facility, I deleted the foreign config and restarted. Everything started fine. I reinstalled windows, got a backup copy of my data and cleaned with DISKPART second HARD drive using another computer.
Now I want to reinsert the second HDD and rebuild the table. When I go in manage open it shows my virtual disk as degraded, and when I'm going to show the physical disks, it shows me the physical disk 0:0:0 as foreign and physical disk 0:0:1 as being online.
Disk 0:0:0 is the drive I want to add to the table.
How can I add it without losing my data on the physical disk 0:0:1?

    Can someone help me please?

    Thank you!

    Hello.

Since the meta-data on physical disk D 0:0:0 is different from the controller, it is necessary to clear the foreign configuration on disk physical said without affecting the data on the physical disk 0:0:1. Subsequently, it could drag in a "READY" state how to assign as a global hot spare to rebuild.

Let me know how it goes.

  • Upgrade to PERC 6 / R to H700

    Hi all

I have a T610 with the integrated PERC 6 I / R controller and that you want to switch to a H700, so I can add a second raid 5 array.  Is it possible to migrate raid 1 array existing to the new controller H700? and then configure the new raid 5 array?

    Thank you

    Bruce

    Bigfoot53,

You can migrate the table since the Perc 6 / i of the H700, as seen on page 9 of this link - http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/products/pvaul/en/perc-technical-guidebook.pdf

What would be in fact just, it is first of all get a good backup of the data, you should always do when you work with the chart. After you install the H700 and then start the controller BIOS (CTRL-R at the prompt) from there you will highlight the controller and press F2. In the F2 menu, you select foreign Config. Select IMPORT FOREIGN CONFIGURATION in the foreign Config menu! What it will do is indicate to the Scheduler configuration raid on the disks information are what should be used. Then it should import the configuration to the H700. Make sure that all drives are migrated.

Let me know how it goes.

  • PERC 5 / I have a question

    Hello

I need to increase the size of my virtual hard disk for the file server, but the only way to do so is by transferring to the larger storage space that my current RAID1 configuration is saturated.

Could you let me know if the following look correct?

    Fast facts:

I have Power Edge 2950 with PERC 5 / i and slots 6 x 3.5 inches. Two are occupied by two others by fileserver again in RAID 1 RAID 1 with MS Hyper-v, the last two in RAID 1 e-mail server.

    My action plan was:

    1. stop the physical server.

    2. remove the two hard drives in RAID 1 with mail server

    3. Insert two new hard drives in their place and set them up in PERC 5 / i like RAID 1

    4. start of Hyper-v

    5. in the hyper-v management console export and import the file server to the newly created new configuration RAID 1 volume.

    6 host physical shutdown.

    7. remove the two hard drives RAID 1 creation who organize the original File Server

    8. replace in hard drives RAID 1 with Exchange server instead of RAID 1 with old file server

    9. in the course of POST import foreign config (with Exchange server) what guest

    Do?

Unless there is an easier way? Or am I a missing something (other then of course resizing the virtual hard drive once on new RAID 1 config?)

    Thank you guys

    Sebna,

Yes, it is good and also the support procedure to increase the size of the array. I see that you might encounter is only if you do something as a backup of the System State, which can cause problems because of differences in size and disks. In addition, as you said, the VHD resizing.

Let us know how it goes, and if you need any other assistance.

  • Additional disk on Dell R710 with PERC 6i controller

I want to add an additional drive to an existing 5 RAID.  Can I do this without destroying the data?  If so, what is the procedure.

    Thank you

You must CLEAR the foreign configuration on the first disc (storage, PERC, Information/Configuration, foreign/Clear in list dropdown controller). After compensation, it will show as a LOAN.
