Portege 3440CT OS install problems

Hello
Just decided to dig my 3440 ct that has Windows 98se on it and reformat an update with XP. He has only 64 MB at the moment, but I thought that if all goes well, then I would switch to 192 MB and whack in a disk that is larger than the original drive 6 gb for the moment. I have the floppy a usb card pcmcia (a Toshiba one).

When I try to install XP, it sees the Cd and begins starting the process, for example. loading devices. But whenever it gets to the last line says «the installation program starts now...» "it crashes with a blue screen with an error"0x0000007B"that I find something to do with the boot drive.

Then I deleted the diving and installed XP properly on a desktop computer using an adapter, put it back in the laptop it starts very well until the first wime you see the XP logo and then crashes with the same error

Then I tried a 60 GB drive, I had in my laptop main that I know works fine and got exactly the same message.

I then tried Windows 2000 which had the same problems, but eventually worked with 98SE. I tried both with FAT and NTFS and I installed the latest version of bios 1.60. But in vain.

Someone at - it good ideas as to what im doing wrong?

Hello

When you install the restore CD is a simple file and when the external drive is just plugged and recognized that it is not problem to install it but when you install the original version of Microsoft installation must be interrupted and the unit should restart for the installation continues. At the moment the external drive can not be found anymore. I assume that this is the problem in your case.

Try to create two partitions and copy the CD Win on the second partition and try again to install the unit.

I received a Portege 3440CT by a former colleague. It works under Windows 2000. She has not used in more than 5 years and can't remember what the password was. I tried to log in as administrator with a blank password, but the password has not been left white (grr) so basically I can't cross the password prompt.

Shouldn't be a problem - there are a lot of Internet password recovery tools. I did a disk using this one here: http://home.eunet.no/pnordahl/ntpasswd/ intending to boot from the disk - there is a brand USB Toshiba external floppy drive.

HOWEVER: the Portege stubbornly refuses to do. The boot order is set to try the FDD before all other options; I manually told to boot from diskettes; There is no ignoring me and Win2K boot from the hard drive. Would be very grateful for any ideas!

    I do not have:
    a reader of CD or DVD for laptop;
    a network connection or internet on it, as far as I know;
    disk recovery or installation of Windows;
anyway to start Windows without knowing the password.

    I have:
    USB flash drives / external hard disk drives;
    The installer of Ubuntu (although on a CD, so useless without a CD player?);
    other computers.

Wipe the hard drive is a solution I'd be happy to see if anyone can advise me on how to do it - there is nothing important about the laptop that should be retrieved.

    Hi abi278,
first of all: what do you think?

-install a new os on this machine?
    -use the operating system installed?

get rid of the operating system administrator password:
-install the drive in another system and run norhdahls supertool > read each line which is given! It is able to check the registry to another hard drive as the boot device.
-make an installation of xp on another machine, sysprep this installation and change drive hard back
-install the drive in another system and make it bootable with back, copy the source files for the system of desires and run the installation after you reinstall hard drive to your ct 3440

Maybe you need a special player to install...

BTW: nordahls disc resets passwords * inside * your operating system - read the manual of this powerful tool.

  • Portege 3440CT: how to format HARD drive

    Hi all

After suffering a little frustration, I decided to use the wealth of knowledge and experience which is available on the support forum.

I have a Portege 3440CT which has been delivered to my friend a few years ago, by a company she worked at the time. When the company replaced the laptop, we were allowed to keep the old, we use very occasionally. Unfortunately, the laptop has recently experienced a failure total and irrecoverable from the original hard drive, which was not a huge setback because there was no essential data there.

In any case, I have from a compatible spare hard drive - a Hitachi 30 GB ATA-5 / IDE 2.5 "9.5 mm 4200 RPM, Pt not ' DK23CA-30F - and mounted, but as the hard disk is not formatted the laptop does not see it is there. As I said earlier, the laptop was provided by the employer, so we are not in possession of any recovery disks Toshiba or Windows that may have been provided, the laptop was originally running Windows 98 Second edition, and the sticker detailing the product key is always on the underside.

I approached one of the suppliers of services of Toshiba for help and they directed me to Toshiba.
Toshiba says that the laptop is no longer supported so they directed me to a service provider, I went around in circles.

My question is, if I bought a copy of Windows 98 SE, or Windows XP and installed on the external floppy drive, which would also include a facility to format the hard drive? I think that in Windows 98 Second edition, there was a function of FDISK. I was able to access the pages of the BIOS after looking through advice given here, I can change the order of boot with no problems

What I request, essentially, is that now, I have installed a new hard drive, what do I do next?

    > My question is, if I bought a copy of Windows 98 SE, or Windows XP and installed on the external floppy drive, which would also include a facility to format the hard drive?

Yes, definitely Yes! The installation of Win98or of other versions of Windows like W2K or XP provides an option to format the HARD drive before installing the operating system.
Simply boot from the bootable CD to get this feature.

  • Installation of Win2k on Portege 3440CT

I just hand over a (damaged) Portege 3440CT without a hard drive. I have no external drives, but I am trying to install an operating system. I can boot in DOS, if I format a hard drive to make it bootable (I used a Toshiba non bootable USB utility or by placing it in a machine DOS from a floppy).

If I put the installation of Win2K disk files and run I386\winnt.exe installation begins, copies the files to the hard drive (no matter whether they are in the same partition) and restart ' to continue installation', except that it isn't. He just restsrts and is there with a flashing _.

Am I missing something? Did I try already worked? Any suggestions?

    Neil

PS. the damage is one of the hinges, I want to make a picture frame.

    Hello, Neil

I'm glad to hear that you have installed W2K on this laptop old but nice. Thanks for the comments. If you have time, maybe you explain in detail how you did that. In my view, it may be useful for other people who have that old model laptop.

I assume that you have created two partitions on the HARD drive, copied the I386 folder on the second and from there begins the process facilities. Am I right about that?

  • Portege 3440CT: update my O.S.

I have a Toshiba - Portege 3440CT. My operating system is Windows 98, distributed by Toshiba. Now I need an update for my O.S. and I am looking for Windows 2000 or more. I need a help.
    Thank you

    Hi Octavian,

You are very lucky. You re Portege 3440CT are supported for Windows 2000.
The best way to install the new OS is to use the original recovery CD Toshiba. If you do not have one you need to install all of the individual drivers.

On the next page, you can find the necessary drivers:

  • Can't connect CD-ROM (portege 3440CT)

My portege 3440CT still cannot connect my external CD-ROM (EagleTec-AND-RXD2600, PCMCIA).

I want to reinstall my laptop but I can't do it without this CD I have download the boot disk to EagleTec web BACK but still do not work.

    Hello

    When you go to
http://EU.computers.Toshiba-Europe.com - Support & Download - Download Driver you might find for your Portege 3440 (W98SE) a companion disk.

This disc is also a startup disk and is responsible for the detection of external CD ROM

Another suggestion is to go about this:
    http://forums.computers.Toshiba-Europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=1881&MessageID=5098#5098
You will find a discussion of the same problem. I hope this will help you.

  • Too bright light on the screen of Portege 3440CT (running Windows 2000)

    Hello

Do you know how to reduce the brightness on the screen of the laptop Portege 3440CT running Windows 2000?

I have another question about the 3440CT Portege battery: battery charge never, I can't solve the problem, I left the power supply 8 days but battery levy at all! I had the same problem with a second battery?

    Any ideas?

    Kind regards
    Jerome

    Hi jnessi,

as far as I know, you can change the brightness of the P3440 with the key Fn and F2! Agic otherwise your settings in the tool!

If two batteries are as old as the portege, it may be that this batteries are too old!
Otherwise your electronic of power supply is damaged, but I do not! ;-)

  • Update BIOS on Portege 3440CT.

    Hello!

I have a Portege 3440CT with version 1.50 of bios.

This version does not support large HARD drive so I thought I would update to the BIOS. (I do not know if the version 1.60 don't either, does anyone know?)

When I try to run the program to update the bios on win2000, he says: 'Initial error', someone knows what is the cause?

BIOS is downloaded from the Web Toshibas website.

I have no floppy or CD-rom available.
Have you tried the update on win98 and also in the BACK and he says ' this not available in v86 mode utility!

Is it possible to place the BIOS on a small hard drive and boot from that?

    Ideas, anyone?

Sorry CyB, but I really don't understand you. If you see the Toshiba support page you will find two updates to the BIOS. Two of them must be done using the floppy drive. So now I'm wondering why you try to do it under operating system running. Sorry, but this is really ridiculous.

Toshiba offer two different BIOS updates. One is TRAD (must be done with the FDD) and WIN (can be done under WXP or now Vista). For old models of laptops there is no version of WIN.

Is it possible to place the BIOS on a small hard drive and boot from that?

As far as I know something like this is not possible and you can check eBay and get the FDD. You can get it for little money. It's really cheap.

  • Portege 3440CT: how to install Windows?

    Hello!

I had this problem: my portege has no windows on it, because a fully formatted person its hard disk to an external pc a long time ago.

Could someone give me some advice how to put windows on it?

    Hello!

For this, you can use the Microsoft installation disc. I put t know what OS you want, but put the disc in the CD drive, boot from it and the installation begins.
After installation, you can begin to install the drivers you can download from the Toshiba site in * Archives *.
    http://EU.computers.Toshiba-Europe.com-online decision-making supported Downloads & => Download drivers

Maybe you can get a recovery disk Toshiba an ASP or eBay. The Toshiba Recovery disk contains factory settings and you need to download and install each driver. It does not take as long as the disc of Microsoft.

    Good bye

  • WXP Sound Driver install problems on Portege R700

    Hello

Have installed Windows XP on a new Portege R700 PT310E. Have managed to reinstall all drivers, but can't for the life of get me the audio drivers installed. Install the audio drivers from the website but still no audio is detected. The unknown device in Device Manager is showing that VEN 8086 DEV 3B 56 but theres not really any useful info on the PCI database.

Any suggestions on how I can resolve. Today cost me a bit frustrating hours!

    See you soon

    Hey,.

I agree with the user above. You must install SP3 first because it contains some important fixes for the HD audio card. So take a look at the Microsoft Web site and download the update.

After this attempt to reinstall the audio driver.

  • Portege 3440CT problem running slow XP PRO OS

I recently bought the laptop above which is running XP PRO. He has a problem that when lit it takes 1 hour to load the operating system. Loading the operating system, sequences or orders may take up to 1/2 hour to recognize.

It worked fine in the past.

Is not the display of error messages.

I can't run all the tests that the OS is so slow.

It has a 50 GB hard drive, which is unusual for this model.

I want to reload the OS but don't have no original Toshiba recovery disks or CD drive, floppy drive.

If I format the drive through BACK and ask the laptop to boot from the CD, what port think it that the CD is connected to. If it is the PCMCIA slot that does not first have the drivers loaded.

The FDD connects to the port replicator, or directly to the laptop and I could start from here.

I have a home XP or Windows 98SE boot floppy disk.

I have a knowledge of computers, can help please.

    Hello

If it works well in the past how should we now why it doesn t work well. Who knows what you have done.
    I recommend you:
    -clean the operating system
    -Remove all unnecessary applications
-Analyze the HARD disk for viruses and spyware
-check the msconfig tool and disable all items that you need not start
-use the Defragmenter disk and HARD disk access will be faster

  • Portege Z30t-A-11U problem of point fingerprint reader Windows 8.1

    Hello

I have problem with player figerprint on portege Z30t-A-11U - in Windows 8.1 PRO
It comes from the outset - (System factory pre-installed)

Several times a week does not fingerprint reader in the morning or after the awakening of the laptop. (connection icon is not at this time see - the drive does not work even after a manual connection)

    Thanks in advance.

    Frantisek

If this question of the fingerprint will not happen always, but only from time to time, then the troubleshooting will be very difficult
These occasional problems are always tricky
Anyway, if you haven't tried updating the software of the fingerprint in the past, I recommend you to do

In addition, please check if the fingerprint sensor has been enabled in the BIOS.

If this isn't the case, activate the fingerprint and save changes to the BIOS.

  • Portege 3440 - cannot install Windows 2000

    Hello friends :)

I have a problem with the installation of Windows 2000 on Portege 3440.
I was running Windows 2000 with the FDD USBB (with driver for PCMCIA of CD-ROM) installation and CD-ROM PCMCIA. "Everything was ok at the moment when I came for winnt ' q.

When installing without partition on the HARD drive was appeared on blue background information: "could not find a place for a swap file. With partition (FAT32, 6 GB): "Setup could not install the Windows boot loader. To ensure that your C: drive is formatted and that the drive is not damaged. I tried with three other HDDss.
What should I do to install this system? (Same users do not have these releases)

    Thanks for help
    Adrian

    Hello

1 don't forget to prepare your hard disk with fdisk (a bootable partition) and format it with the Fat32 file system

    2. start by a MSDos saved in your floppy drive-drive with drivers for your PCMCIA CDrom drive (Freecom)

    3. copy the entire i386 to the W2K installation CD directory your HD, be sure to have loaded smartdrive, otherwise it will take ages!

4 start again with the saved, go to the i386 directory and start Windows NT

You can look here for more information about freecom pilots and the bootdisks: http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=19232
On your 3440 it should be easier than with the R100 because of normal 2.5 "HD 6 GB, but the problem is basically the same

  • Portege Z930 - network WLan problems

    Z930 Windows 7 is 3 years old.
I'm having problems connecting to the home network and I do not understand the clues to work towards a solution.

Other laptops can connect to the wired network and wireless, but cant Z930, or down and will not show the home network.

    Appear networks nearby.

Z930 can connect to the point of mobile internet access on phones, but that does not provide access to servers and network.

Disable the Firewall Norton 360 and the protection doesn't seem to help.

At a time and only once, I saw the message invalid network address.

Logical, said the material is OK because can connect to the wifi phone.

I don't know where to begin try andworkout why z930 can't seen to connect to the home network.

    > I'm having problems connecting to the home network and I do not understand the clues to work towards a solution.
I want to be sure I understood your problem:

You ve set up the wireless network at home (I assume you are using the WLan router, etc.) but you are not able to connect the Portege Z930 to your wireless home network.
    Is this correct?

Since you are able to connect this notebook to internet hotspots (public WLan) I guess the wireless network for laptop s and WLan card driver are installed and are working correctly.

Are you able to connect the laptop to the internet using LAN?

In case this also not possible, you must reset your router and should go through the router options unique to ensure that each option has been set correctly.

In addition I recommend you renew the IP address by typing this command using the console (to start the console type CMD in RUN)
In the Console (black DOS window), you must type: + IPCONFIG / RENEW.
This would renew the ip address that is assigned automatically the provided by the router ip address pool.

  • Portege R600 of fingerprint problem: error: could not open the specified database

    Hello

I am trying to give the registration of fingerprints for my Toshiba Portege R600-101 and I get the above error.
I tried also on windows XP and Vista.

Has anyone with the same problem or anyone suggesting a solution?

I uninstalled the truesuite Access Manager but still the same problem.

    See you soon.

    Hello

I noticed a new update for software fingerprinting for protected R600.
Remove the old application of fingerprints, restart the laptop, clean the registry and the system using a 3rd party too (CCLeaner is free and not bad).
    Then reboot again.

Download the fingerprint on the page of the European driver Toshiba Software and install again.

    Check it out!
