Portege 4000 running XP Pro SP2, no WPA with Wireless option

Hello
Can someone let me know if the Portege 4000 Mini wireless adapter supports WPA? I tried the Cisco and Lucent drivers on the Toshiba site with no joy and I am up to date with XP, SP2 etc.. The card works fine with an open wireless link.
Thank you

Hi Charlie

AFAIK This oldie, Portege 4000, was equipped with the card Wireless LAN ORiNOCO (Agere).
According to the user manual the Wlan card supports only data encryption Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP short).
So I doubt that the WPA would be available.

Maybe you can switch on an external USB WLan key that supports the ciphers.

  • Running win XP pro sp2 mouse moves, but everything else does not

Running win XP pro sp2 mouse moves, but everything else does not respond after a certain time. Just started doing this last month. Had Xp for several years without ANY problems at all.

    Hi BobM202,

    1. did you of recent changes on the computer?

    2. you receive an error message?

    3. do you have security software installed on the computer?

    4. are you referring to freezing except office mouse movement?

It is possible that some third-party programs installed on the computer is causing the problem.

I suggest that you put the computer in a clean boot state and check if it helps.

To help resolve the error and other messages, you can start Windows XP by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This type of boot is known as a "clean boot". A clean boot helps eliminate software conflicts.

See section to learn more about how to clean boot.

  • Load the new XP Pro SP2 OS on Portege R200

I have a R200, bought in Russia (where I work). I want to install an English version of XP Pro SP2.

I intend to reformat and install from scratch. Then load all the utilities of Tosh from a CD, I created.

Loading the XP CD and restart then the installation of Win XP Pro does not recognize Toshiba PCMCIA DVD Rom CD - RW I plugged.

So I created the 6 boot disks for SP2 on the site of Ms.

I start from the startup disk, all goes well but until I get to disk 6. Next, I get the windows error blue screen exception etc.

Beyond that, I can't get to format the drive for a new installation.

When start I have now the option for the Win XP Pro and WIn XP Russian, although the latter is going into the installation routine that cannot see a CD drive Yes F3 and restart.

    Any ideas?

As far as I know that you need a support disk Toshiba (PCMCIA card 16-bit cardbus)
I found an info that the readers should work:
    PA3402E-1DV2
    -PA3352E - 1 CD 2

To my knowledge, you must press button P and it should be possible to start PCMCIA player. To boot from the disk, you must use the C key.

    Hello

I recommend to check which device unknown need a driver.
See this Toshiba document and follow the instructions.
    http://support.toshiba-tro.de/KB0/TSB57014E000QR01.htm

After this procedure, you must know which driver you need.
Then go to the page of the Toshiba driver and download the required driver.

  • How can I determine if I am running XP Pro 32-bit or 64-bit?

How can I determine if I am running XP Pro 32-bit or 64-bit?

How can I determine if I am running XP Pro 32-bit or 64-bit?

In general, with Windows XP, if you have to ask what architecture you are running: you are running Windows XP 32-bit.

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows7/32-bit-and-64-bit-Windows-frequently-asked-questions

    1. Click Start.
    2. Do right click my computer and then click Properties.
If you don't see "x 64 Edition" in the list, then you are running 32-bit Windows XP.
If "x 64 Edition" is listed under system, you are running the 64 bit version of Windows XP.

Another surefire Tip: If your system is fully patched and you have SP3 - you run 32-bit.  64-bit has only until a SP2.

  • I am running xp pro so why they ask me to activate Windows 7?

    activate windows 7?

I am running xp pro so why they ask me to activate Windows 7?

XP has been activated years ago? now, they say both need equipment to enable the garbage.

There is nothing wrong with your report that I can see - so you should not receive not authentic or notice of activation.

The notification came at one time and then disappear later?

If Yes, then it is probably due to a "race condition", where two programs or more are fighting for the possession of a file--in this case, it prevents the system WGA, checking the status of the operating system, resulting in the notification. A plus later re - test then clears the air.

The addition of SH Devolo may have been the straw that broke the back - is the amount of RAM on the system? XP SP2 requires at least 512 MB for a reasonable speed, so if your system has less, I'd say you are trying to upgrade if possible.

  • I have problems to connect to my network wireless computers in my house running XP Pro.

Hello. I have problems to connect to my network wireless computers in my house running XP Pro. I set up my wireless router to use WPA - PSK encryption. When I type in the passphrase on computers running XP in my house, I get an error message indicating that the password must be 5 to 13 ASCII characters or 10 to 26 characters in hexadecimal. It doesn't even seem like it checks the password. The error immediately.

I tried to connect to the network using my work running Windows 7 laptop and it works fine. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

    original title: cannot connect wireless

Go, I tried and it worked was that you have to be sure what parameters you have set when you set the security of your are wireless (for example the Type of security, Encryption Type etc.) and they have to be compatible with the version of your laptop.
Older versions usually have 64bitWEP or WEP 128 bit and newer versions have WPA, WPA2-Personal (PSK).

The 64-bit and 128-bit require 5 or 13 characters. These characters can be obtained when you configure the wireless (it will ask you to put the characters and the characters will be automatically converted to hexadecimal characters, which it must be remembered that they are the password wireless).

WPA or WPA2 - Personal (PSK) are easier to implement and the passwords are normal characters that you want it to be.

Then go to your security wireless set up the page and re - configure the password or the type of network and it should help

  • DC7800 SFF XP Pro SP2 - SP3 upgrade?

Hi all. I recently rebuilt several "wiped" DC7800 SFF computers using restore disks. They are now running Win XP Pro SP2. Should I update to SP3 and if so, can I use the standard Microsoft SP3 download or is there a specific HP? Thank you.

I just did a recovery on a company dc7800 PC yesterday at a customer site. I recommend that you leave to SP2. There are a few security updates Microsoft Update will recommend that you apply if you do not apply SP3. Apply the security updates. The reason why I made this recommendation is to avoid drivers and BIOS problems.

There is no specific Microsoft Windows SP3 Pro update for the dc7800 provided by HP.

  • Since Firefox v10. Layout, print preview and print do not seem to work with XP PRO SP2 x 64, but normally work with Win7 x 64.

Layout, simply change line title to the foreground and freezes the screen except for the ability to close the page and return to the page where Page Setup was invoked. This print preview a gray monochrome page with the normal menu features that normally respond except the function of setting of the Page. Print prints a blank page still. Noticed problems with Firefox beta versions 10 and 11 and 12, with XP Pro SP2 x 64. Firefox version 11 has no such problems with Windows 7 ult x 64.

  • Portege 4000 hard drive Replacement - what HARD drive is compatible?

Is it possible to find a replacement for my Portege 4000 HARD drive, because the original becomes very capricious?

    Hi mate

I think that the Portege 4000 is an elder and in my opinion this laptop supports a 2.5 HARD disk.
I m not 100% sure, so I recommend you to install a hardware diagnostic tool like Everest Home Edition which would provide all the information on the HARD drive is internal.
That would help you get a new, compatible HARD drive.

    Welcome them
