Portege M200 - unable to access the recovery console
Hello
Yesterday my software anti-virus let me know that a virus was trying to access my computer, had quarantined it and claimed a reboot of my Portege M200 to remove it completely. Restart, the laptop is not actually restart and just hung. It gets past the Toshiba window and crashes. I tried to start in safe mode but nothing helped. It starts to load files and crashes to a particular system file that is obviously now corrupt. I tried to enter my recovery console using Windows XP Recovery discs, but was unable to do so. The discussions on this forum have been useful, however I still have not solved the problem.
I have my product recovery DVD-ROM, but I'm afraid to use it as the next warning with her said that reformatting will lose all my work and I do not know if it will automatically reformat my hard drive (which I have no back ups of my work) or I will give a choice? Also, I see BONES of your forums, that it will correct not actually of corrupted files. I've also seen queues to make an image ghost on a floppy drive but I don't have a floppy drive on my Portege M200.
Can someone please provide me with the steps to solve this problem, as I am of 11 hours trying to solve this problem, but nothing helps!
Thank you
You are right about image recovery. Recovery image is designed to clean BONES only and there is no option for the repair of the BONE. What you can try is to get the disc of Microsoft WXP installation and Startup Repair option.
I hope this will help you and you will be able to boot OS preinstalled. If it will work on the first back up all your important data.

How to access the Recovery Console
Hey, it's all messed up with my Toshiba Satellite M40.
I had a problem with "missing or damaged file" when loading Windows XP.
Well, I found a solution - boot cd support, press r etc.
But this manufacturer got that one option - all format and reinstall.
But I have very important files there.
All I want to do is to access the recovery console to repair my leader (vga866.fon). How can I do that. Help, please[Edited by: admin on July 15, 2007 18:50]
Hello
do not reinstall the entire system. Why you don t try the following:
Download the 'Ultimate Boot CD 4 Windows' tool (UBCD4Win), burn it to a CD, start and then just copy this file located on the CD under X:\windows\fonts on your disk--> C:\WINDOWS\Fonts\
After that, you should be able to boot your system again.
Have a nice weekend

My office has the continuous loop reboot of Windows XP SP3 ("UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME" STOP 0x000000ED - 0x8A8EB7B8). When I put my Windows XP Pro installation CD to access the recovery console to make the steps required to solve the problem. The "Welcome to Setup" screen ever comes back to press 'R' to arrive at the RC. Instead a screen comes up that says, "the following list shows the existing partitions and space unpartitioned on this computer." Then, he gives me the ability to press ENTER to install Windows XP, press C to create a partition, or D to delete a partition.
Why can't I to the Recovery Console to fix the reboot loop?
Most importantly, I lost some data on my hard drive? If it won't let me even get to the RC?I found a solution to my problem and it worked!
If anyone else has this problem follow these steps:
Click on this link and follow the instructions to make a CD of Windows XP Recovery Console. http://www.proposedsolution.com/Downloads/Download-Windows-Recovery-Console/
Then, when you start using the CD, this...
1. When you see the "Welcome" screen
2. press on 'R' to use your Recovery Console to repair the installation
3. Type "chkdsk/r" and press "enter." CHKDSK will analyze and repair your hard disk. Type "Exit" once this process is complete.Your computer will restart and should be fixed. at least mine was.
I hope this helps!

How to access the Recovery Console for "fixmbr" with Toshiba Recovery DVD?
Hello
I searched but did not find all related messages, I start a new thread.
I have to fix the MBR and normally you can do this via the recovery XP and then Console "fixmbr". As you may know Toshiba Recovery DVD know only in a sense - the way hard "format hdd or first partition".
* How can I fix the MBR on the standard MBR MS when no original XP installation disk/DVD is usable - Toshiba Recovery DVD are available
tried the XP CD from my office... but you know... it doesn´t work.Additional information:
I deleted my HARD disk partition table and cannot access the first partition to a partition that would be very useful that I could try to recover this partition later - but I can't. My A200 SatPro also comes without floppy disk but can boot from USB.Thanks for any answer!
Best regards

Yes, the thing with the recovery console fixmbr should do the trick, and I am a bit surprised that your XP from your other computer disk does not work.
You are not able to boot from it, or what is the exact problem? Because you will not be able to repair with your recovery disk.
Advise you to try another original XP disc, may borrow from a friend and try again. You may need to change the boot priority to operate. -
I have an emachines el1200-07w that crashed. It has windows Vista Home Basic. I can not access the recovery partition and emachines has no recovery for this model CD. can someone help me?
original title: windows vista problemHello
Some manufacturers have more available Vista recovery disks.
As happened with eMachines, you may have to try this instead:
You can also borrow and use a Microsoft Vista DVD, which contains the files for the different editions of Vista (Home Basic, Home Premium, Business and Ultimate) must be installed. The product key on your computer / Laptop box determines what Edition is installed.
Other manufacturers recovery DVDs are should not be used for this purpose.
And you need to know the version of 'bit' for Vista, as 32-bit and 64-bit editions come on different DVDs
See you soon.

When I type the command 'md tmp' to start the recovery process, it tells me ACCESS DENIED. I have no password for the system or the administrative password. I hope someone can help me. Thank you very much. I use the dell 4700 running windows XP.

WinXP PRO, the recovery console, could not change an attribute
Hello, I installed the recovery console, and so far I just used it to run chkdsk. Today, I tried to change the attribute on a read only file. I typed attrib - r h mitchell. I kept getting a msg saying that the settings were wrong. I checked attrib /? and he followed correctly, I thought. I am running winxp pro svc pk 3, ie8. Thanks in advance for any help.
Good for you.
Someday, you'll be glad you did.
Mitchell, is a file or a folder?
In the Recovery Console, you do not have access to each file and folder on your system. You cannot in all cases - this isn't how the Recovery Console.
You can read this article:
http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/314058
The Recovery Console is the recovery so that he knows only about some things - do not change the attributes on files and folders.
There are some other bootable CD, you can use for this.
If you have some kind of issues or problems and need some ideas, trying to better describe what you try to do it and someone can help.
They are taunting on this other thread needing a response... Although I got to me 23 SE other than "answers" today that match the requirements.

How to configure "allowremovablemedia" parameter in the recovery console?
Hello
I recently traded a 2.5 "portable laptop HD to a new computer in order to retrieve some files. When I got to the Windows logon screen, he said I would need activate windows, before I could access the files. It now not even longer shows up this message so it connects me automatically power off when you I connection. Seeing as how I don't have another computer to place the HD, I decided to just copy the files from the HD to another location in the recovery console.
Unfortunately, the default recovery console not allow copying the files to removable media and I read that there is a parameter of the recovery console to enable the copy on removable media 'set allowremovablemedia = true' but I also heard that is not accessible without first log on as an administrator and change some settings for security policy.
Because the way I can't log in as administrator (or anyone else), I was wondering if there are other options to be able to copy files to removable media in the recovery console.
The answers would be greatly appreciated.
Create free Linux Livecd such as Knoppix and boot your computer from this CD. AprΦs the dΘmarrage, you will have full access to your hard drive and removable USB drives or network storage. The CD is also easy to create that downloading a ".iso" file then the function 'Burn Image' of any burning program allows you to burn a bootable CD. You may need to use another computer to download/burn this CD.

For the recovery console administrator password
I have dual boot windows xp and ubuntu. My bf has removed my boot partition, so I can not even boot to any OS.
I tried to make the windows recovery ""fixboot"then 'fixmbr' and reboot." I know will fix my problem. But the thing is that I don't me remember my password admin Ive not tried all the ones I use. Nothing works. I was wondering if there is something I can do in addition to a complete re install of XP?
I don't mind losing ubuntu, but I really don't want to loose whats on my XP partition.
Thanks for your help!
Sara
Hello Sara,.
The password of the Windows XP Recovery Console is ideally empty. I suggest you just press ENTER when you are prompted for the password to the recovery console.
If you are not able to access the recovery without password console, this means that the password is configured by the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM), you will need to either consult the user manual or contact your computer manufacturer.
Thank you

Cannot start the Recovery Console Windows from the installation CD
On my MacBook I ve running in VMware Fusion 3.0.1 a Virtual Machine with Win XP Pro.
When I reboot Win XP Pro and start again from the Windows XP Pro installation CD, I can see the "Welcome" with the menu screen
-To install Win XP now, press ENTER
-To repair an installation of Windows XP using the Recovery Console, press r.
-To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.
When I click ENTER or R, I see the message
-The installation program did not find any hard drives installed in your computer. Setup cannot continue. To quit Setup, press F3.
Today the question? In the 40 GB of the virtual machine, I have two free partitions of 10 GB and 20 GB Win XP Pro execution. Why see Setup cannot process this partition?
I ve also installed a second Virtual Machine, but the installation of VMware Fusion not show the "Welcome" screen, but it installs both Win XP Pro.
The installation of the recovery in the virtual race Machine Win XP Pro Console is successful, but when I start the recovery in Start Menu Console, just the screen blue 0x7B (inaccessible boot device).
What must I do, to start the Recovery Console in VMware Fusion? Or another question: when merging does support the Windows Recovery Console?
Wow, nothing indicates that you use a German version of Fusion that your English is excellent. Anyway as VMware headquarters is in the United States, like me, I always provide information in English and information-specific guidelines in the VMware Fusion help files come from the English version as well as any Documentation from VMware that I reference. I say this next part as a general and not directed comment towards you, as you have noted your using the German version... Any person requesting help must always at least include technical information referencing manufacture, make, model, version, and language other then English, material goods and software involved in issues. We'll find a good reference for the type of information that must always be included in HOWTO: ask (and answer) Questions.
As a much get into the BIOS if you use the Fusion 3, you don't need to enter the BIOS to change the boot device as this can be done in the settings now however to enter the BIOS for other things that need/want of press you F2 directly after starting the Virtual Machine and after having clicked on the screen but the av VM boot so fast that it's easily missed. You can add the following settings to the file of configuration .vmx of the Virtual Machine to slow down the startup so that force once in the BIOS.
bios.bootDelay = "3000" bios.forceSetupOnce = "TRUE"
The bios.bootDelay is in milliseconds and the bios.forceSetupOnce Boolean value is then set to FALSE, automatically. Each of these parameters are independent of each other.
You can find the following useful notes for this and or other uses...
====================
Notes: keyboard
Different setting function, you may need to adjust various preferences keyboard to work with the function keys and or use the Fn key.
OS X > you may need to press the Fn + F6 etc. and this can be changed in system preferences > keyboard & mouse > keyboard > use all F1, F2, etc...
Merger 1 > VMware Fusion (menu) > Preferences... > keyboard and mouse > activate Mac OS shortcuts keyboard
Fusion of the 2 and 3 > VMware Fusion (menu) > Preferences... > keyboard & mouse > Mac OS shortcuts > activate Mac OS keyboard shortcuts
====================
Notes: Starting the virtual machine from CD/DVD or ISO Image
If the Virtual Machine is not initiating the CD/DVD or ISO Image, and then select the CD-ROM in the Boot Menu.
Engage the Boot Menu and select the CD-ROM drive...
The bottom of the virtual machine just above the status bar after the Virtual Machine is started, it has...
"Press F2 to enter SETUP, F12 for the start-up network, ESC for Boot Menu"
On the status bar, it features...
'To direct entry to this virtual machine, click inside the window.'
BIOS flashing by is very fast so you need to work quickly however give it a try and if the Start Menu cannot be higher then the configuration of the Virtual Machine file .vmx must be edited to slow the STATION and or change the boot order.
OK, click the big Play button on the screen of the virtual machine, and then quickly mouse click in the Virtual Machine screen and then press the ESC key to bring up the Start Menu and select the CD-ROM drive. If it boots the CD very well and if the Boot Menu does not appear, because he goes just to quick access and then try again or...
Watch the Boot Delay section in the current user's Guide to VMware Fusion and the section of the virtual machine files of A Beginner's Guide to VMware Fusion on when the configuration of the Virtual Machine's .vmx file is and add the following lines to the file. TextEdit can be used to edit the .vmx file.
To give more time to indulge, the Start Menu Add the following...
bios.bootDelay = "3000".
For, once, force the VM in the BIOS to change the Boot order in the BIOS if the CD-ROM is first add the following...
bios.forceSetupOnce = 'TRUE '.
====================
Notes: By modifying the .vmx file
For Fusion 2.x and 3.x ctrl-click the target entry of Virtual Machine on the windows of the library of the Virtual Machine and choose Show in Finder and then Ctrl-click on the packaging of the Virtual Machine and select to display the contents of the package.
By default in the normal Fusion 1.x virtual Fusion function file are created in the folder "~/Documents/Virtual Machines" and according to host operating system version and or Fusion worm. There may be a .localized after Virtual Machines although by default, this extension is not visible in the Finder.
~ Is your Home Directory.
The files that make up the virtual machine are placed in a folder (aka Bundle and or packing) bearing the extension '.vmwarevm' which, by default, this extension is not visible in the Finder.
Example: "~/Documents/Virtual XP.vmwarevm Machines/Windows" in the Finder would just resemble an icon named "Windows XP."
To view the contents of the entire file "Windows XP.vmwarevm" ctrl-click (or right-click) on the "Windows XP" icon and select Show the contents of the package.
To change the configuration file of .vmx ctrl-click (or right-click) on the "Windows XP.vmx" file and select open with > choose another... then in Application choose TextEdit.
Note: If you use Firefox do not copy and paste the parameters if TextEdit unless you copy only the exact line and nothing else in the case, use an editor such as TextWrangler.
====================
Notes: Creating an ISO Image of the CD/DVD drive
When you use utility disk in order to have a bootable ISO Image, you must select Master CD/DVD without encryption in which case by default, it will have an extension .cdr file and in version 1.1 of the merger and later does not need to be changed in .iso, although one can if one chooses to. A default .dmg image is compressed and is not bootable, as an uncompressed .dmg will start if changed in .iso and of course the source CD/DVD should be bootable in the first place.
To create an ISO Image using disk utility...
1 insert the CD or DVD disc into the optical drive of your computer.
2. open disk utility (/ Applications/Utilities/Disk utility).
3. Select the CD or DVD drive in the list of disks and volumes.
4. Choose file > new > "Disk Image from (name of the disc)."
5. type a name for the disk image.
6. choose "DVD/CD master" from the Image Format pop-up menu.
7 choose "none" from the encryption pop-up menu.
8. click on save.
