Portege R500 - cursor often jump back a line or several spaces back

I just bought a R500.
When you type, the cursor jumps back a line often or several spaces back.
It's an involuntary yip, and I don't think it's a human error of keyboard.

How can I stop this? Any advice?

Best regards, Ron

Hello

Disable the touchpad while typing. You can do that by pressing the Fn + F9 key combination.
I had the same problem and it was caused by touching the surface of the touchpad while typing.

You have a touch pad on your laptop?  Try turning off temporarily as a test to see if the problem stops.  If they stop then it seems likely that the touchpad is very sensitive & you're brushing accidentally part of your hand or an arm against it while typing.

To temporarily disable a touchpad & alter its sensitivity, go to control panel, mouse - the details of how this element is arranged varies between different PC but a checkbox to disable & the sensitivity adjustment are almost certainly somewhere.  The manual of your PC must also contain details on how to do it.

I'm not a good typist, but I was taught that typing can be done more quickly & accurately so the palms of the hands are kept so high off the keys that only the tips of the fingers can reach the keys.  A by-product of this would be that nothing is pretty close to brush against the touchpad.

  • Spaces in line in Doc w / notes in the form of two or three lines of blank space will appear at the bottom of the body of the text

I am writing a thesis with a lot of commit and annoyingly, often two or three lines of blank space will appear at the bottom of the body of the text (not the reference section) on a given page. Fiddling around with notes (increasing or decreasing their), or with the body, which is sometimes useful, but it's not ideal - I wouldn't need to change what I say artificially in order to use the space in the body of the text... • Portege R500 suddenly turns off, restarts

Scared near death of my 16 month old Portege R500 running XP Pro.

Symptom: It suddenly shuts down while I work - the screen turns white (black - although a fraction of a second of vertical - I think - lines), then it starts again. When it restarts automatically, I get a notice from windows saying that my system has recovered from a serious error. What happened three times in the last month. I can't be sure of that, but I think that in all cases, I was working in IE - version 6 and now upgraded to 8 (which keeps freezing upward in his own right, but seems not related). It seems to happen completely randomly and not at any relevant time as starting a program or something.

QUestion: any experience? Anyone know what is happening? My hard drive is going to die, or is it just an overheating?

Note relevant potential: 36 to 40 degrees celcius here for the last 8 weeks. The computer is so hot that you can fry an egg on it. It is on a raised platform and let him NAP for an hour or two after lunch. Two of us sit with a fan on us. We use an external display.

    Thank you in advance.

    > It suddenly shuts down while I work - the screen turns white (black - although a split second of worm)
    > Note relevant potential: 36 to 40 degrees celcius here for the last 8 weeks.

Well, the high temperature might be the cause of this behavior.
And of course, that could happen often in the summer while a higher outside temperature.

I think you should check the cooling fans.
Spray compressed air to remove dirt and dust from the fans.
Ensure that there is enough free space around the laptop to get properly air circulation.

  • Portege R500 does not start from the XP CD

My basic problem is the following - I have a Portege r500 with Vista on it. I'm moving from Vista to XP Pro, but when I put a bootable XP installation CD in the drive, it turns, looking around for awhile and then I get a blank screen with a cursor blinking on it.

Now, I've done this before, so I know that something is supposed to happen, but nothing don't. And I tried 3 well-known installation CD, is not a problem of CD. Do I need some update BIOS/firmware to boot from the CD on this thing? Or am I missing something?

    Help!

    Thank you.

Often the Portege R500 should be able to boot from the CD/DVD drive and should begin the procedure of installation of the CD Win XP SP2 installation.

But it is a tricky thing.
The Portege R500 needs an Intel (r) Matrix Storage Manager (iMSM). This iMSM is necessary to recognize the HARD drive and install Win Xp on the HARD drive.

I recommend you and create a new CD of Win XP starting with software called nLite to integrate the SP2 of Microsoft and Intel Matrix Storage Manager (iMSM) in Win XP.

You can then use this CD for installation.

  • Portege R500: Cannot restore Vista using Toshiba recovery disks

I downgraded Vista to XP loaded factory.
However, I would now like to restore back to Vista.

    I have disc 1 & 2 ' product Recovery DVD-Rom; Portege R500 disks.
They are also marked "Windows Vista Business (SSD/PATA)" has been provided by Toshiba.

I don't know how to use these discs to restore my operating system to Windows Vista. When I insert disc 1 and after loading some files, a message "cannot read the file source or disk - Preinst2.SWM" and I can not go any further.

An instruction step by step would be greatly appreciated

I wonder why you receive two recovery disks. As far as I know Toshiba Vista Recovery image is stored on a DVD.
Perhaps you have received two CD

In any case, have you tried to boot from the second disk? I mean the second recovery CD?

Usually, recovery is not very sensitive. You must boot from the disc and should follow the instructions on the screen.

The error cannot read from the source file or disk - Preinst2.SWM looks like a little to the Conference on disarmament would not readable or the CD/DVD drive would not read the disc properly.

  • Portege R500 - replacement of the keyboard - success

After buying a new keyboard for the R500 on EBay about a year ago, I finally blew the courage to replace a badly scratched by a new keyboard. The reason I've waited? I was worried about how to get out the old keyboard (it is locked down to the chassis, and it was obvious that I have would hurt one during the withdrawal.

There is a nice write-up general on how to disassemble a R500 here:
    http://www.irisvista.com/tech/laptops/Toshiba-Portege-R500/disassemble-laptop-remove-hard-drive.htm

The description above is not to discuss the keyboard however, so here's some additional information and tips:

    * Read this whole procedure before you start - it's simple, but not for the faint of heart.

    * Shut down, unplug the power, remove the battery.

    * Make sure that you have the correct keyboard for your model. The US keyboard is p/n G83C000903US for example. One I removed was a Rev 1 and a new one, I had a Rev 2 (don't know the difference - they look identical). They can get as low as $40-mais check the part number before you buy.

    * The keyboard connector is located under the computer, and so you will have to take off from the bottom, carefully following the instructions in the link above.

A couple of notes: (a) the cable Ribbon PCMCIA connector must be opened to disconnect the cable, as this is the only thing that prevents you from removing the bottom of the computer. You can easily do so through access memory on the back door, but BE careful not to damage the cable lock. It works by switch to the top the little plastic lever that is held in place by small pieces of plastic on the sides of the connector that flex * a little *. Be gentle with this connector. When you put it back later-connector, if you placed the cable all the way into the connector, you can lock with only slight pressure down on the connector, and it will snap into place.

    (b) there are other types of cable Ribbon connectors use too. For example, to unlock the keyboard connector, now visible also on the bottom of the deck, slide both ends of the connector in the direction where the cable plugs in. They are snug and will only move about 1/4 ", be gentle but firm.

    (c) the two tiny connectors blocks free access to the water of the keyboard do not have locks on them. We're a band with only a few drivers, and one is a red and white power connector. Just pull out them. All the other connectors, you will probably miss through requires unlocking, so be careful!

_Now back to the keyboard: _

Once you have managed to disconnect his cable on the bottom, turn the laptop and start to remove the keyboard on the edges. It is supported by many small pieces of sticky tape, 2 faces, and that's it. As the base of the keyboard is made of aluminum, it is likely that you will distort the keyboard a bit as release you it, even though it may be downplayed maybe using a tool like a rule or something plastic and pry with it. Take care of not to damage the connector of the Ribbon and try to ignore these scary cracking sounds that identify each section!

Once you have turned it off, you must remove any excess tape before starting point and again put a bunch of small pieces of new, good quality 2-sided tape (such as 3 m). No need to use anything stronger or thicker - just put a bunch of parts everywhere on the base, especially near the edges and the space key.

Now, finally, turn the keyboard in position, making sure that you screw the connector back Ribbon through to the correct place. Turn the laptop over and re - insert and lock the Ribbon connector (make sure that it is directly and fully forward lock connector). All other connectors back in too. Then come back and push down hard on all sections.

Re-assembling, taking care to put the 4 mm and 6 mm screws in the right places and a tiny on the side.

Cross your fingers and turn it on!

    Good luck!

    Thank mate for this review.
Generally the replacement of keyboard is not really complicated and someone with small technician skills should be able to replace it

  • Portege R500 - some parameters of the touchpad are unavailable

    Hello

I have a Portege R500 which have recently had an unfortunate encounter with the ground and needed a new hard drive, among other things; So it is like new in the aspect of the software.

Since to resume the touchpad does not scroll.
I checked the Control Panel, and it gives me only options for the number of lines per click of the scroll wheel down, so that it looks like, he thinks it's a normal mouse.

In addition, it has no icon in the notification area on the taskbar to display when you press the key, which he was, and you can access a lot of parameters such as the size of the area of scroll etc...
I checked the driver and it is the same as that available in the downloads section if it is not that, but I can find no trace of this another piece of software anywhere.

Anyone know where I can download the icon and its parameters of support or any other means to scroll?
    Thank you

It seems that you have not installed some needed touchpad driver.
Driver Toshiba page provides an Alps Touch Pad Driver for Portege R500 Electric.
    Install it!

Then you can check the settings in the control panel-> mouse-> hardware-> touchpad properties

    Welcome them

  • Portege R500 - can only connect to unprotected WLAN

    Hello everyone

My Portege R500 (win XP pro 32) has something very strange.
It is absolute no problems to access any unprotected WIFI, but with the gateway D - Link DI-524 in WPA - PSK / WPA2-PSK channel 6 mode.
He faults the IP assignment many times (from 30 min to 1 hour or more), before receiving access to the local network.

Gaeway reports: dissociated [MAC ADDRESS] with no WPA retey

The R500 is configured exactly as all other laptops. No other laptop not a WLAN access problem, even during failures R500.

Often the WLAN will detect R500 with the maximum power level, and after a few minutes later without WLAN is available.

I think that there is a driver problem with WXPpro in authentication procedure:
The WiFi network is the Intel 4965AGN
The driver is the ver.11.1.1.16 of NETw4x32.sys

    Help me please...

    Try:

    Update the BIOS
Update the LAN and wireless drivers
    Disable your firewall
Use the static IP instead of DHCP
Update the Firmware on your DLink.
Manually configure the wireless connection, instead of by selecting it in the list and clicking "connect".
