Portege R500 suddenly turns off, restarts

Scared near death of my 16 month old Portege R500 running XP Pro.

Symptom: It suddenly shuts down while I work - the screen turns white (black - although a fraction of a second of vertical - I think - lines), then it starts again. When it restarts automatically, I get a notice from windows saying that my system has recovered from a serious error. What happened three times in the last month. I can't be sure of that, but I think that in all cases, I was working in IE - version 6 and now upgraded to 8 (which keeps freezing upward in his own right, but seems not related). It seems to happen completely randomly and not at any relevant time as starting a program or something.

QUestion: any experience? Anyone know what is happening? My hard drive is going to die, or is it just an overheating?

Note relevant potential: 36 to 40 degrees celcius here for the last 8 weeks. The computer is so hot that you can fry an egg on it. It is on a raised platform and let him NAP for an hour or two after lunch. Two of us sit with a fan on us. We use an external display.

Thank you in advance.

> Note relevant potential: 36 to 40 degrees celcius here for the last 8 weeks.

Well, the high temperature might be the cause of this behavior.
And of course, that could happen often in the summer while a higher outside temperature.

I think you should check the cooling fans.
Spray compressed air to remove dirt and dust from the fans.
Ensure that there is enough free space around the laptop to get properly air circulation.

  • P20 - 552 suddenly turns off...

I have a P20-552 (PSP26E-025E9-S4), which is about 18 months old and has recently started to misbehave.

In particular, after a few minutes of intense tasks of processor (made of video file) it suddenly turns off. No warning signals sound, messages - just stops. Very worrying - anyone any idea why? Fortunately, the warranty is not exhausted until 2007.

Another question, every few weeks or so I discovered that when starting, the keyboard simply does not. The mouse is fine as everything else, is as far as I can see. Until now, a simple reboot has solved this problem but this indicates that there is something wrong deep down or is this something we are supposed to live with?

Thank you very much in advance for your suggestions and help.

    Brian.

    Hello

Well, it could be a problem of overheating if the appliance stops without any messages. The temperature is high, if the CPU works with high efficiency.
In this case the first that I can suggest is to check the ventilation openings. Try to I clean with your vacuum cleaner.
It's not easy to say why the keyboard problem. He s strange because after the OS restart the keyboard works correctly. Well, maybe a new OS issue. But it's only a suggestion.

    Hello

In your case, there is problem definitely contact and just small movement can be responsible for the loss of contact between the motherboard and soldered chips. You must understand that we are talking about Micro-millimetres.

I guess that you know very well what happens if the material is cold and when the material is hot. After a few starts probably material will be dilated (temperature) and contact is here. As you can see after a few laptop startup can run well.

I won't bore you anymore: it of clearly the hardware problem and either give it to service for repair or open your window and... you know what I mean :)

  • Portege M400 randomly turn off and restart

    Hello
I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on what's wrong with my laptop? Two days ago began to randomly turn off and restart. I checked the following:
-Execution control online Panda Security virus etc - all ok.
-Check the system of newspapers but all it records is an error "windows has stopped unexpectedly".
-Suspect an overheating problem I took it to pieces, clean all the dust from the fan and the heat exchanger. Also cleaned up all the old thermal paste off the CPU and replaced with new ones. It works now much cooler but always stops at random.
-Run a Suse Linux Live DVD to check, it certainly isn't a problem with the OS and it stops again.

I'm guessing that something is short circuit on the motherboard because it will run ok if it is on a flat surface and not moved and I do not press too hard while typing etc. However, it is a bit hit and Miss. If someone has had this problem before and there at - it something else I could try? Also any ideas on is how a new motherboard? I expect probably expensive :( If there is any kind of fix I can do myself? I'm pretty technically minded and do not have a problem with taking it bit do not know much about electronics, engines are more my thing :D

    TIA, Firedrake

PS The laptop model number is PPM40E running Vista Business.

    Hello!

I m not an expert in laptop but in my opinion, it sounds like a hardware malfunction. The reason could be a faulty motherboard or something else.
I mean you already tried Linux bootable disk, so I think that the problem is not bound by the OS.

I put t know how much a new card mother cost and if it s difficult to Exchange or not, but you should contact the nearest ASP that you can find on the Toshiba site. The laptop technicians can check your laptop and order a new card of mother.

  • Unexpected suddenly turn off

I have a problem with my motorcycle Force Z, for the last two weeks, or almost.

Suddenly shut down.   Not a turn OFF him... just a black screen suddenly, and then... requiring of the phone to be operated manually on again once.  This has happened at least 12 times in the past weeks.

I did different tasks with the phone every time it happens.  (Once everything as a call back, and the phone was ringing, once while I wrote a message text, and TWICE in the middle of the night, by herself, while on the charger USB C and various other times do things like web browsing, etc.)

When turning the power back on, I noticed that my couples of bluetooth are all lost, as well.  (I don't know if this is an important clue, but everything else on the phone seems to be normal after a reboot.  Just pairing bluetooth lost.)

Some quick answers the questions I know I will ask you:

No, the device has never been wet

No, the device has not been abandoned NEVER

No, not entrenched or modded somehow...

No software from unknown sources installed

No, no, unusual or shady Web sites visited

Yes, this is my second BIKE FORCE Z (first had to be returned to an IMEI number).

Yes, I'm starting to feel more like a product tester, a buyer of a very high-end flagship smartphone.

Yes, I have I'll get fired from my job and will not be able to afford to buy ANY phone ever, if this thing goes off in the middle of the night by himself again, and I'm late for work, because of a missed alarm.

Yes, I tried all the normal things that the customer service tells you to do first.  I removed the SD card, I have cleared the cache of the partition, and I did a factory reset.   The problem persists.

I could live with an automatic restart, from time to time, because at least my phone still rings, and my alarm goes off.

But turn off completely by himself, unexpedetedly? Sometimes in the middle of the night? Not only.

Is that all I can do to help to identify or address this problem?

More graciously, thanking you in advance, for any intervention in this matter,

    -AH

    hoggercom wrote:

I was very optimistic, but unfortunately my last attempt at fixing the problem did not work.

Can you advise me on the next step to fix this, please?

I thank very you much, long in advance, for any intervention in this case.

    Hi hoggercom,

I'm really sorry to hear that the problem persists after reset. As is the case, we recommend that you submit your phone for repair, and while they were inspecting with your series/device IMEI number, you're still in warranty. We can process a repair for you. • Satellite M30X-102: power question - unit suddenly turn off

    Hello!

I have a portable Satellite M30X-102 and about a year ago and a half months he started to turn off suddenly. First of all, it looked like an overheating problem, but also disabled directly after that I pressed the power button and sometimes it worked 10 hours without any problem, also, when it is off, power LED was flashing until I have Nations United - and replugend the power cable. If the battery was, he was immediately released.

I sent it to repairs. They only cleaned the cooler and changed the dough to thermal conductivity and for a few days, the laptop worked normally, but about half hours ago, it happened again. I am convinced now that this is a power supply problem, possibly the power cable.

You have any suggestions of what I could do, or should I send it back with a note that it is a power supply problem?

    Thank you

    [Edited by: admin March 23 06 06:56]

    Hello

In my opinion, you should contact the service because it can start diagnostic tests.
For me, this looks like an electronic malfunction of power supply.
If the laptop has been repaired it there a few days/weeks, so I guess that the guarantee is valid.

    Hello

Thanks for posting your question on the Forums of community of Microsoft.

    1. The computer completely off, or only the monitor turns off?
    2. You get an error message or a blue screen while the system is turns off? If Yes, what is the exact error message you get?
    3. What is brand and model your computer?
    4. Apart to plug the projector, does this problem occurs in all other conditions also?
    5. What happens when you try to turn on the computer later, with a projector connected?

I suggest you to check if the computer shuts down completely or only the monitor turns off. If the computer shuts down, the problem may reside with the graphics card driver that fits inconsistent or has become unstable or corrupt. Therefore, I would suggest trying the following steps and check if the problem persists.

    1. Open Manager devices by clicking the Start button, click Control Panel, click system and security, and then, under System, clicking Device Manager. If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
    2. In the list of hardware categories, find the display adapters and select the device driver you want to update, and then double-click the device name.
    3. Click the driver tab, click Update driver, and then follow the instructions. If you are prompted for an administrator password or a confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

For more information, visit the below mentioned link:
    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows7/update-a-driver-for-hardware-that-isn ' t-work correctly

If you are not able to update the device driver via windows update, you can visit your computer or graphics card manufacturer's Web site and download & install the latest driver. Or contact the manufacturer of your system to do.

Hope this information is useful. If the problem persists, please post back with answers to questions for assistance, we will be happy to help you.

    Hello

    I agree with MrPacman.

I don t think that the laptop loses power.
There is another reason why the laptop stops automatically.

The blocked vents could lead to a higher temperature inside the laptop and an overheating problem.
This is also why the fans run all the time.

What you could do is to clean the fans with a professional pneumatic sprayer.
These sprays are designed to perform this cleanup and get rid of the dust and debris of laptop inside
