Portege R700 - limits of SSD upgrade

Hello

I just bought a R700-184 and the plan is to Slingshot W7 Ultimate 64 - bit, 8 GB of ram and an SSD inside

My question is that it is a standard HARD drive, what are the limits and questions, I am likely to encounter the execution of this upgrade?

Thanks in advance

Ben

Hello

There is not much difference between the SSD and HDD so usually the laptop must be able to correctly handle the SATA SSD drive.
In some cases, an update firmware for the SSD drive is necessary, but usually it is provided by the manufacturers of SSDS

    I agree with Akuma.
The use of SSD drive should not be a big problem.
If something does not work, try to update the firmware of SSD drive for the last s.
In most cases, this action has resolved most of the problems

Since the Portege R600 supports a SATA controller, the SSD drive should support the same standard of controller.

Good luck and thanks for sharing your experience after upgrading the SSD drive

According to the specifications of the laptop your laptop can handle with GB of RAM, but has been bundled with 2 GB memory is not possible.

What about SSD? SSD upgrade is possible and you can use 256GB SSD for upgrade. After this system will be much faster, and you will certainly more performance and speed.

  • Portege R700 - Sandforce SSD OCZ and Toshiba BIOS v1.9

    Hello

It is a question to the Toshiba techy guys. Please can someone confirm compatibility with SSDS OCZ Vertex2 (Sandforce) with the Portege r700?

Since I've updated the stock HARD drive I had problems with BIOS recognizing the SDS when you restart. If I boot the laptop from the cold, that is nice, DDI is recognized and everything is ok, the problem is intermittent. When requiring to restart the laptop to Windows 7 (64-bit), it hangs at the screen Toshiba Leading Innovation. It seems that the BIOS cannot detect the drive for some reason any and just freezes. I read the threads on the footprint software but am already run version v1.0.2.32 - so think it is independent.

I've recently updated firmware OCZ Vertex2 to v1.32 hoping that it could solve the problem and there is not. The question might be more compatible with the Toshiba BIOS Sandforce.

I am running the BIOS v1.9 - please can you guys do something to fix this?

    > That's obviously a problem with Sandforce
Always is it that there are several different manufacturers of SSDS, and it might be possible that not all the parties meet the same standards.
In this case, many manufacturers of SSDS provides updates of the firmware, but this isn't always the case so have to test other SSDS

Hi I'm new to the forum and I was wondering if people can give me advice on what disk hard solid state to buy for my laptop Toshiba Portege R700?

I heard that a number of readers can give problems Starter such as some Ocz and Corsair models.

Ideally I'm looking around 256 GB of storage space; any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Hello

You can buy any SSD drive that supports the SATA interface.
It is possible that you need to update the firmware, but this should be verified with the manufacturer of SSDS

    Thank you

    Try this:

Remove the Toshiba Value added Package Panel-> programs and features application
    Reset
Download and install the latest Package of added value on the Toshiba site
Download and install the latest HDD/SSD Alert on the Toshiba site

Otherwise, it would be possible that the problem is related to the HARD drive maybe that alert the program HARD drive cannot read the info of the disk due to HARD drive hardware problem.

  • Portege R700-17Z - upgrade to Windows 7 64 bit

    Hello

    I currently have a Toshiba Portege R700-17Z.

I want to increase the amount of RAM from 2 GB to 8 GB, and therefore I want to run 64-bit Windows. I was planning on running a clean reinstall, but 64-bit Windows built into this machine? Or I need a disk full?

If I need a drive in its own right, any ideas on how to do it without an optical drive?

    Thank you very much!

The first news on RAM upgrade: you're right. You can upgrade your Portege up to 8 GB and 4 GB compatible modules have part number PA3677U-1M4G.

According to the specifications of the laptop your Portege shipped with WIN7 32 BIT PROFESSIONAL, but it is supported for Win7 64 bit. 64-bit drivers and tools specific to Toshiba and utility can be downloaded from the Toshiba download page.

Now what is your decision? If you need assistance with installing the OS let us know.

  • Portege R700-173: Win7 on SSD - how to get a windows installation disk?

    Hello.

I want to install the new 128 GB SSD in my Portege R700-173.

I want first to recovery media. But I do not understand what will contain this DVD.

It will be Windows7 install disc? (I'll be able to install new windows on my new SSD?) with the pilots additional Toshiba and utilities?

or this recovery disk will contain some kind of image of a real system?

I also think that moving my C: partition (windows) from the old HDD to the new one SSD (with Acronis software - I did it with my desktop computer)

should I move only my C: partition (with good shift of k 4)?

What is this SYSTEM 400 MB partition? should I move it as well?

Toshiba Recovery Media Creator says he needs ~6.6GB
While next to Windows recovery media will contain?

Is it possible to install Windows (from recovery disk) on my partition created previously (by the other program)?

    > want to first make a recovery media. But I do not understand what will contain this DVD.
The recovery disk contains the image of Toshiba.
The image is a package that contains the operating system Windows, drivers, tools and all the stuff that was preinstalled on your laptop as on the first day of purchase.

    Welcome them

  • Portege R700 - upgrade Windows 7 32-bit to 64-bit and memory question

I recently bought Portge R700 and am disappointed by the memory. I have a license of Windows 7 64-bit edition: what problems can arise if I update? Once installed, I can then use 8 MB of RAM.

Moreover, I found the reagrding misleading Web site the option of using the 8 MB of RAM with the32-bit OS. I have 4Mb installed, years to see that only 2.86 MB is usable.

I get "out of memory" messages and would like to know how to allocate more memory to live for video.

Tom's right. If you want to use the 64-bit operating system, you must do clean install operating system. All drivers and tools specific to Toshiba and utilities must be installed Additionally one by one.
If you need assistance with installing Win7 let us know.

I put t know for what purposes do you use your laptop and what applications are important for your daily work, but, in general, I don t think you will have problems using 64 bit OS. Please keep in mind that all additional software is 64-bit capable and everything will be OK.

As far as I know laptop user doesn't have the influence of the use of video memory and it runs automatically. It is unclear to me that you can change these settings and set how much RAM can be used for video operations.

Anyway, Portege R700 is nice for laptop with sufficient power for daily use and also for use with standard applications. I don t think you ve bought this laptop for games.

  • Portege R700 - quick as lightning!

Despite some reports of 'flaky' and similar operation, I decided to tear off my HARD drive and slap a SSD and W7 Pro 64 bit on my portege R700-184

flippin heck its the thing to the top fast!

I used a base of sandforce OCZ Vertex 2 120 GB drive and the Retail Media to install the 64-bit windows. It's with any other firmware or software update for the SSD or Laptop, so right on the box

Before starting from cold to 95 seconds, down to 23 seconds on the SSD used! and he wakes up from his sleep in 4 seconds! VERY impressed!

Similarly the 64-bit operating system has improved my WEI scores the CPU is 6.5 to 6.9, the RAM of 5.4 to 5.9 and obviously the SSD took a hard drive of 5.9 to a burning 7.4 :-)

excellent upgrade in the embryonic stages, I will present long-term stable after that I have all my drivers and running upward and restore my files!

  • Replacing the drive HARD on Portege R700

    Hello

I just ordered a R700 and hope to upgrade the HARD drive of 320 GB for one SSD OCZ Vertex 2.
Is it easy to replace the hard drive in the R700? Should I remove the keyboard is a Panel on the back?
What size hard disk will - 2.5 "or 1.8"?
A SSD will be simply connect using existing connections, or something else there?

    See you soon.

According to the specifications of the laptop Portege R700 has 2.5 HARD drive is HDD with SATA interface, so I think that you should order 2.5 SSD with standard SATA connectors.

HARD drive is placed on the bottom side near the cooling vent and it is fixed with a screw only.

Remove the screws and HARD drive. You will see how the HARD disc is placed and how it must be removed.
It's very simple and you can do it alone.

  • Portege R700 - impossible to pass to Windows 10

I have a Portege r700 with original Windows 7 OEM installation.

Windows 7 is updated and program update Windows upgrade me to Windows 10 offer.

The upgrade process begins very well, download & pre-configures all the stuff, and then finally ask me to reboot the system to continue with the upgrade.

After a few seconds, the restart process is launched and load... the current Windows 7 system, saying that there was an error during the upgrade process.

I did some tests; I'm also a fan of Linux, so I tried to boot the system with a LiveCD of my distributions preferred: after loading of the quick menu asking what I want to do (the liveCD boot, installation, diagnose, etc), it restarts... and show me again the quick menu (quick menu is GRUB, kernel functionality has not been loaded right now).

I understand that 'something' (and I guess it's system restore Toshiba) let me start on something other than the original partition, preventing the upgrade of Windows 10.

    Any idea?

I was offered the free update on my R700-12U and R930-1DK Toshibas--and did the updates without any problem. However, if I understand it right, the R700 is not on the list of evolutionary units, but it has worked very well on my own, from up-to-date W7.

  • Cannot use 8 GB in Portege R700

    Hello

    I had 2 x 2 GB PC3 10600 ram in my R700 (i3) running Windows 7 x 64.

I have a few sticks of 4 GB of ram, I wanted to update my laptop 8 GB total.

I put in the memory which consists of:
    1 x 4 GB PC3 12800
    1 x 4 GB PC3 10600

The laptop comes on the screen where it says "Starting Windows" and looks like it freezes before windows animation.

If I try to use 1 x 4 GB (two speeds) and 1 x 2 GB, then Windows starts fine, but there is a problem when I use both the 4 GB sticks.

I tested the ram with Memtest and they pass the tests.

If I put the bars of 4 GB of RAM in a R840 (Windows 8.1 Pro), it starts very well.
If I put the bars of 4 GB of RAM in a R700 (i5 running Windows 8.1 Pro), this also starts very well.

If I try to put in the sticks of 2 x 4 GB of ram in the R700 i3 and trying to install Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 then happens to the screen that says "Windows is loading files" and the progress bar ends but then the screen goes all white and the fan runs but nothing else happens.

I have 8 GB of ram in the R700 i3, so I don't know that it supports. The BIOS detects it has 8 GB of ram when I inserted them and the BIOS is updated to the latest version which is 2.20 iirc.

Anyone can shed light on the problem?

    Hi Borito

If the specification states that your model of laptop can handle with 8 GB of RAM, that we should not discuss this topic.
By RAM upgrade is important to use 100% compatible and two modules of identical RAM (same specifications).
I tested it on my machine using too much standard and a cheap RAM and my machine was dead. With two modules of identical RAM, everything is OK.

Can you please send the name of the exact model of your laptop Portege (R700-xxx) and I'll try to find the exact reference for 4 GB of RAM for this model of laptop.

I have this problem of video playback on the first day. While for example on YouTube, video resolution than 360 freeze while the sound is ok.

I contacted Toshiba whereby I had a linke for the bios and latest drivers. After the upgrade question persists. Sometimes I get a green screen by watching the video flash as well. I guess it's a hardware graphics card problem. Any ideas? Thank you! (Portege R700 19 L, win7 pro 64)
