Pro SSD Samsung 840 overheat

I have an Inspiron 17R and installed a Samsung 840 Pro SSD 256 GB drive.  I work with a video presentation software and while rendering video the application often breaks.  I have had many interactions with the software company, and they claim that there are no problems with the software.

I use a Notebook Cooler ZM NX2000, but the drive still seems to be pretty hot.  As a test, I had a small desk fan which I made on the left side of the laptop when running the rendering process and the process is completed.  Accordingly, I suspect that the drive is overheating.

I made Diagnostics and here are some results:

High speed rpm: 5100

Max speed rpm: 2600

Thermistor high CPU 65 c (149F)

High video thermistor 54 c (129.2F)

Someone had a similar problem?  Suggestions or other options?  I asked in Samsung too, but thought I would check with the experts here :)

Thank you.

Hi zukini98,

Good day and welcome to the community!

Thanks for joining us and I am sorry for all the inconvenineces. You can start update BIOS system using this link http://dell.to/12QP7Pr. And also, please make sure that the air vents are cleared of dirt and dust. You can use a compressed air cans to clear these events. Let me know if it works and if the performance is improved.

  • Presario CQ61-110SL: upgrade for laptop Presario CQ61-110SL from XP to Windows 7 with new SSD EVO 840

In fact on Presario CQ61-110SLI I have XP installed the Vista of origin instead.

Now I want to upgrade to Windows 7 and contestually get a new SSD Samsung 840 rather original EVO... What is the correct procedure?

    Thank you

    Hello

Thanks for posting in the Forum from HP Support.

There is no procedure to upgrade from XP to Win 7, it would be clean installation.

    1. place the SSD drive in the machine instead of the HARD disk

    2. start the installation of Win 7 disc to install Win 7 (best x 64 edition)

3 install the drivers of the machine, you can download from >here<

Windows 7 is optimized to work with SSD, there will be no problem.

If you have important data on your old HDD, you can either save it before (on external support, USB key, Cloud solution, etc.)  or after it (via a USB cable plugged into the laptop as external drive). This is also an option to transfer data.

Please, let me know if you have any other questions. Happy holidays!

  • Allows you to TRIM on Samsung 840 Pro SSD without danger?

I'm still in Yosemite because of compatibility issues with some software that we use at work. I saw OS x 10.10.4 you can activate the TRIM of the terminal, which would help a lot on my MBP of 2011 with a 840 Samsung 256 GB Pro. When I bought it, it's the tip about 500 MB/s as well read/write - excellent! But more recent benchmarks shows a sad note:

It's obviously a part of poor cleaning result and the lack of support from TRIM on OS X. whereas it's easy to activate the TRIM, I'm not so sure that it is safe to turn it on. There are many items from 2014 and 2015 mentioning bugs in the firmware from Samsung regarding FILLING in queueand bugs in the Linux kernel regarding sequentialTRIM that created a different problem. Most people would have problems because of the firmware on the disk problem.

-Where are we now? Is this even a question? I can't find a more recent post on what are the potential risks. I do a lot of video Import/Export at the time (where the wish for a faster drive) and I can't risk of corruption. We're talking perhaps about 50-60 hours of material, all the corruption in exports would probably take long to notice (before anyone looks at everything).

A quote from the post to MacRumors: 'so if you have a modern Samsung drive, it is important that your operating system uses regular sequential TRIM. Linux is the only OS that uses queued. All versions of OS X (same El Capitan) and Windows (last) always use sequential TRIM and will continue to do so in the foreseeable future. »

So is it true? I can easily activate topping on my Samsung SSD, no risk that I'm suddenly stuck with random corruptions on my files in a few days/weeks?

As far as I can see 'about tech' article there is no problem on Mac, only Linux distributions that uses queued TRIM, which the Samsung 840/850 readers wrong informs that it supports. Sequential TRIM and Mac/Windows should not see any problem.

"Samsung TRIM questions seem to appeared only when used with the TRIM controls in queue." OS X uses only sequential TRIM of orders at this time, so allowing the FILLING with the line of Samsung SSD should be OK, such as reported by MacNN. »

  • My laptop Dell XPS 17 (L702x) does not recognize an SSD pro Samsung 840

    Hello

I buy all my first SSD for my laptop Dell XPS 17 (L702x) (8T7CQS1). I managed to install the Samsung 840 pro (MZ-7PD256BW) at the HARD School of XPS drive, but the BIOS does not detect as a second HARD drive.

My BIOS version is the most recent: A19 (26/10/2012), I tried to load the BIOS default settings, but no change.

The SATA in the BIOS mode is AHCI.

What could I do with them?

Thanks, if you can help me,

    Kris

    Hi Kris,

Traction test drive 1 and put the SSD in this slot. Then boot in the BIOS to see if the drive is detected.

It will be, yes - but unless you have future plans to move the drive to a newer system, you will have to pay a price premium for this drive that will not be displayed in performance, due to the slower SATA controller in the system you have.

  • SSD Samsung Pro like second SSD on optical drive

    Hi all!

I have an i7 MacBook Pro mid-2012 2.9 Ghz Mavericks

I have upgrated it replaces first my Superdrive with the original apple Hd 750 GB, defining a Pro SSD 256 gb HD first OSX.

    Everything was ok.

So I decided to change my second HD (Apple 750 GB on optical Bay), with a SAMSUNG of PRO SSD 512 GB to increase performance... (I use the second drive as a media folder for my musical activity... documents, samples, libraries of plugins...)

I just changed the HD Apple with the new... but when I restart the computer, the second drive icon does not appear in the disk utility that, in other places (information system.. etc...)

    Why?

    Could someone help me? Please

    Hi Anapcam:

I suggest that you install the new SSD in an external enclosure from OWC enclosure or with a USB to SATA adapter SATA USB adapter and connect to your MBP via USB.

Open disk utility > delete and format the SSD for Mac OS extended (journaled) and a GUID partition.

Then try to install in your optical Bay. See if it works.

  • HP Pavilion dv7-6c95dx - do not pick up the Samsung 840 Evo SSD for clean installation

    Hello

    Laptop model: HP Pavilion dv7-6c95dx

I bought a new Samsung 840 Evo 500 GB SSD and going on to replace the main HARD drive. Tried to install Windows 7 Ultimate on it using the USB bootable Win 7, it loads the installation and starts ok and then he asks to load the driver for any device and gives you an analysis of the option to see if there is any storage device to select for installation. It clearly shows that it does not pick up the SSD.

Unfortunately the bios insydeh20 V3.5 has no possibility of even check if it is detected or so.

What do you think is the problem? The BIOS update would solve this issue? or is there any other work around that.

    Thank you

    Mike

Before I went ahead with the method you suggested, I tried updating the Bios with the latest version and voila... system picked up the SSD and all is well now.

    Thank you

  • T500 SSD Samsung Evo 840

    Hello

I've had a T500 laptop for about 4.5 years now and I'm looking to replace my HARD drive. I'm afraid that happens at the end of its service life. I'm looking to replace it with an SSD - especially a Samsung 840 EVO (MZ-7TE250BW). I am aware that I won't speed SATA III (seems to be SATA I or possibly II - even then it will still be an improvement from my HARD drive).

From what I found, the T500 has a drive Bay 2.5 "9.5 mm. However, the EVO 840 is 2.5 "7.0 mm. So my question is this - can be PLOPPED in the SSD to replace the HARD drive, or is there some necessary adapter kit? The player would need a different box / rails? Obviously 7.0 mm would fit, but I don't know if the screws / connectors were queuing and if something would be needed to fill the extra space to make the drive safer. There are a bunch of EVO 840 which comes with a 'portable' kit but I don't know if it works in my T500.

    Thank you

    Mark

    Welcome to the forum!

I have installed a number of 7mm SSD using the standard a 9mm HARD drive caddy/rails. Have not yet tested the EVO, but I do not think that you will have problems here.

    Happy update.

  • Slow writes PERC H700 and Samsung 850 PRO SSD

I saw several posts about this, but don't see a solution.

I have a few servers R710 with H700 controllers. I have installed Samsung 1 TB SSD Pro 850 and see writing very slow compared to other performance SSD tested in one box, simply slow in general. SAMSUNG SSD are ~ 500 MB/s in both sense when connected to the stand-alone desktop computer, but ~ 500 MB/s read and ~ 45 MB/s, writes when it is connected to a server.

    1. 1 x SSD in RAID 0 - no redundancy, just to test the performance. I tried all combinations of memory cache writeback and read before possible setting (enabled, disabled) and has never had more than ~ 45 MB/s, writing.

    2. 6 x SSD in RAID 5 with all possible combinations of never getting write cache over ~ 110 MB/s, writing.

    3. 6 x SSD in RAID 10 yet one time all possible settings of the writeback cache - ~ 140 MB/s.

Finally, I installed 120 GB Intel SSD and got more than 400 Mbps in both directions without worrying about the RAID or cached.

What is the problem with the H700 and Samsung SSD controllers? No one knows how to fix?

Any other R710 compatible controller, which do not have this problem? Might be able, JBOD? I also tried a stop the controller PCIe Board without a bit of luck (bottom of basket or any compatibility issues)

    Thanks in advance.

    P. S.

The controller is a latest firmware and the BIOS and other components. Used Dell Repository Manager iDRAC discovery and the ISO bootable to update everything.

SAMSUNG SSD are on a latest firmware as well.

    Hello.

The Samsung 850 Pro SSD are not validated or certified to work with controllers from Dell, and as such, there is an incompatibility of communication between readers and the controller at the firmware level. Thus, you are required to achieve the unexpected poor read and write performance regardless of the controller cache settings. Consider using Dell certified readers.

    Thank you.

  • Windows 8 - clean install on a Samsung SSD of 840 Evo

    Hello

I'm trying to do a clean install of Windows 8 on my new Samsung 840 Evo SSD - but when I go through the process of installing Windows 8 will detect not the hard drive - and wonder for drivers?
I'm not sure what it does cause here I can't find the drivers for this SSD drive

    Hello

Just a short note to tell you I had this work - I was just using the samsungs migration software - something that I had already tried before but without success - difference this time is that instead of connect the SSD drive via the usb port 3 as they suggest (for the initial migration), I connected directly to the pc.
    So its all working now!
Bravo and thank you again for your help
  • Samsung 840 pro 256 GB or not so great raid of 4 disks tray?

I'm debating a 'hand' project disc I thought 4 seagate 1 TB are on my motherboard in raid 5 (asus p9x79 pro).

Now, I know this great as raid controller used his on the mobo - but what sort of speeds will I get if these 4 disks in raid 5? It tempt me to just use a samsung 840 pro and save it instead, but this isn't my first choice.

It also won't be a temporary solution anyway until I get enough money for a disc of 8 dedicated a whole raid controlled upward (which I assume is fast enough).

PS also space is not a problem for me - I stay normally less than 100 GB per project.

    Thank you!

A raid5 4 disc on the motherboard will be probably about 150-180% faster than a single disk and with drives of 1 TB Constellation ES, which translates into about 225-270 MB/s sustained transfer rates. Mind you, it is a guess, since I've never tried a parity raid mobo, but based on what I heard from users who used on-board raid. On a dedicated controller, you would see figures around 360 MB/s for the same configuration.

  • I can't install windows 8.1 SSD samsung 850 Pro for my AW18 because this error:

I bought a new SSD Samsung 850 Pro to my Alienware 18. When I try to install the windows 8.1 and selected the SSD to install the Sagna appear the error:

"Windows has detected that the EFI system partition is formatted as NTFS. Format the EFI in FAT32 system partition, then restart the installation. »

Start of the motherboard as: AHCI

    Hi csarquiteto,

You will need to format the disk partitions in order to install the operating system. Just follow the detailed instructions in this video , and when you get to the screen that says where you want to install Windows?, select the old partitions and delete them (This erases all data from the partition also), then create a new to complete the installation.

Let me know how it goes!

  • SAMSUNG SSD of 840 EVO and the compatibility of the Inspiron 17 5748

Does anyone know how to get a Samsung SSD to work in an Inspiron 5748? A BIOS update would be useful?

There is absolutely no problem regarding the SSD compatibility, some very old systems here are held in SSD Samsung and Dell used their Samsung SSD OEM partner.

I strongly suggest a clean format and install (remove all clear them partitions beforehand or course the reader) it could be a matter of hunting wild goose if you perform a new installation, and it will be difficult to diagnose.

Wizard software should have told you regarding the State of health of the reader? If it is GOOD then its most likely your electronics semi-fresh install it here is the root cause.
