  "Was" folder on the desktop? You say all
  folder is missing?

  The file might be in the trash?

  Is it possible that your files are still there but have
  become hidden?

  Reach... Control Panel / folder Options / View tab.
  ... To check "Show the hidden files and folders" / apply / OK.

  If the photo thumbs reappear... they can turn washed

  I cnanot be being specific, because I don't know your OS or the graphics card, but I can say that this can probably be corrected by control panel - display - advanced settings, and then click the tab for your graphics card.   You put block images and other external content under Tools | Options | Security in OE?  If so, then uncheck this option and reopen mail or hit the answer button and then must show the image.  You can also contact the sender and ask that she be sent again.

  Try pressing Ctrl + Alt + TOP Arrow Keys (or one of the other Arrow Keys).

  If this does not work, right-click on the empty desk > graphics > Rotation.

  The region is called the taskbar.

  3 ways to recover...
  (1.) the easy way, if you're lucky:
  Right click on the task bar > click Properties > at the top, click on Notification area > can you put a check mark on the network? If so, you're done.

  If it is unclickable.

  Note: Depending on the version of Vista you have, use the method two or three.
  One when you're done, return to #1 above and click on the box.

  3.) do a restore ysytem. Choose the date at which the icon was present under your restore point.
