R400/T400/T500/W500: Switchable graphics issues with Win 7

Based on the experiences of the wire on switchable Vista graphics driver issues, I here starts a new switchable graphics related to Windows 7 (any SKU) records. Please keep the Center wire and clean up your language. IE: problems related to the XP or Vista are not the subject here.

I made the switch to Win 7 64 and so far, it is an improvement in the "switchable graphics" - zone. But I have seen some issues:

  • Energy consumption is much higher than under Vista 32. It seems related to a problem in the management of the switching power of graphics adapters: see the thread by roteiro.
  • On my external display of Dell, I sometimes watch "pixel noise". In certain areas of the screen pixels flickering in different colors.
  • Could be related: hang after the release of the standby mode

  • R400/T400/T500/W500: display driver "amdkmdap" hangs

Summary: Lenovo ThinkPads with switchable graphics (R400, T400 and T500, W500) have problems of usability under Vista and using external monitors. More than six months, users have been plagued by frequent Windows crashes. During this time, Lenovo will not expressed complaints and reports available. The end of April 2009, Lenovo has solved a lot of problems by releasing a new official driver. However, several problems, including serious, remain as of today. Lenovo said to work actively on the issues pending (without results so far).

Important information for users: If you experience any of the problems reported here, then Lenovo will advise you to call your local Lenovo support. Application that a case is submitted to engineering equipment. In particular, you should ask "a case CMVC to be created and degenerate". These "code words" ensures that your case be treated correctly.

    Old description of the problem

On Vista 32 and Vista 64, the "amdkmdap" ATI display driver hangs when an external monitor was active before OR an application (game) using the DirectX technology is used. The user receives usually few messages called "Timeout detection and recovery" (TDR) of Vista:

(Click here for an explanation of the message from Microsoft)

Sometimes, amdkmdap falls down several times in a row. Then, Windows crashes with a so-called "BSOD", probably resulting in a loss of data. Generally, Windows detects "atikmpag.sys" as the driver to crash. Instant restart sometimes also independent from the front THAT TDR crashes. In such a case, no BSOD is displayed.

The following video illustrates the phenomenon: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LBX9QsCmrpY

Above this behavior has been confirmed for the following ThinkPad models: R400, T400 and T500, W500 (see below). Problem reports that symptoms are often related to play games or the laptop being docked and the external monitor connected via DVI.

However, the presence of these two conditions is not necessary to trigger the accident to the driver:

    1. There are reports where no dock was involved and the external monitor is connected directly to the laptop VGA port.
    2. In addition, there are reports where the laptop is docked and an external monitor is connected to the DVI port.
    3. So far, there were no reports related to a monitor connected on the display Port that is available on some models. (Perhaps because this port is not used.)
    4. There are a few cases where a dock, or an external monitor was involved.
    5. Some games with reliability triggers the crash.

    Steps to reproduce

While initially (around September 2008 - October 2008) the accident can be triggered easily, the situation is now (December 2008) more complex. Accidents happen again, although there is no clear model more. According to various reports, the crash of display driver can be triggered as follows:

    • The output of the mode standby
    • Watching a DVD.
    • Playing one of these games: Fallout 3, Bioshock, Team Fortress 2, Knights of the Old Republic.
    • Arbitrarily during the normal work. A normal working day, the problem occurs at least once.

    Other issues

Here are several questions that seem to be related. More information can be found in other posts in this thread:

    • The laptop screen or external monitor works at a low resolution after the release of the standby mode.
    • After the connection, both monitors flicker when the screen resolution setting.
    • External monitors can be activated using Presentation Director.
    • The external monitor is empty after the connection or disconnection.
    • There are a few reports on the accidents of display driver on computers running Windows XP.
    • Switchable graphics drivers more than 2.5 GB RAM usable under Vista 32 (or 500 MB - 1 GB less than usual).

    Workarounds

Lenovo has released a new "trick" document that provides a link to a new driver. Get it here , but be sure to read the instructions!

(Old advice follow below the line. Think of them as obsolete.)

    ---

Here are some tips that could make the problem happen less often. I have not tried all the. However, a. and b. have improved the situation for me; your mileage may vary.

    A. Si you don't have to use an external monitor, then move to the Intel graphics card for now.

    Otherwise:

    B. make a few changes to your system:

    • Disable Aero.
    • Create a new profile in the Manager of power supply with the following parameter: when running on AC, turn off the screen after 40 minutes. (And therefore, the laptop less frequently between standby mode.)
    • Install the latest graphics drivers.
    • Install the newest BIOS.
    • Install the latest Hotkey utility.
    • Install the latest drivers.

    C. disable switchable graphics in the BIOS setup and install the drivers from ATI modded (see zilla poster in this thread for instructions).

The last solution (c.) has been confirmed to work reliably by several users. However, as a result, you use drivers that have not been tested by Lenovo. It is possible (but not likely) that damage the results by doing so. In addition, it may be difficult to install a Lenovo driver that solves the problems reported here. Finally, you cannot use the energy saving Intel graphics. Thus, you must use this workaround only if you know what you're doing.

The programs can be downloaded from the following locations. Note that update system not always immediately offers you the latest versions.

  • Re: R400/T400/T500/W500: display driver crashes "amdkmdap."

I just installed Windows 7 yesterday and of course, he had problems with this video card. I have a T500, bought in March of this year.

Everything worked fine after installing Windows 7. The problem was when I installed the video driver from Windows Update. The screen initially showed only the wallpaper after installation, and after that reboot the screen would just be black, showing only a cursor. I saw a few posts where someone said that this is because Windows thinks that a projector is installed, so you must press the button of the window + P, and then the right arrow, then enter. But I have not tried. I'm sick of this dang hacking video card!

Someone was able to get the card works well under Windows 7? Now I'm running it with just the default driver, which works fine until I try to connect an external monitor (it doesn't let me extend my screen).

If you have installed the driver Thinkpad Hotkey and OSD, you must disable autorun of the on-screen display program. The symptoms you describe are a bit like mine with the same problem

  • T400 - video feature - Switchable Graphics

ThinkVantage System Update detected, downloaded and I installed the update ' features of video of ThinkPad (Switchable Graphics) for Windows Vista Version 8.52.4.4 - 080919 a-069896C-Lenovo. The status reads 'Have not installed' even if I chose "install automatically after downloading.

The side effect is that I do not see the "Catalyst Control Center" in the Notification area, or anywhere else on the computer.

How can I remedy this? Is there a way to get the update of the system to download and install again?

    Thank you!

The issue has been resolved. I had to manually download and install the switchable graphics software from lenovo site. I can see the Catalyst Control Center back.

  • Aspire switchable graphics issue E5 - 521G

    Hello

I recently purchased Aspire E5 - 521G with AMD R5 graphic m240 which should have 1 GB of video memory dedicated. Atleast desciption of the computer said that, before I bought it. When I got the pc, I noticed that there is 2 GB of video memory dedicated. Ant thing is that it has not only r5, but r4 graphics also. Before I got this pc I got one with intel hd graphics 4400 with only 32 MB of video memory dedicated. And the thig is I played GTA IV on this medium computer with graphics settings. But I can't do it on this computer wit 2 GB video memory dedicated. So, what's the problem? The only thig that make me buy this pc was this dedicated r5 with 1 GB video memory graphics card. And when I ir I also has a kind of chart amd r4 card... And anyway. How is it possible that intel hd graphics card with 32 MB dedicated video memory has better gmaing the experience of this dedicated r5 with 1 GB video memory?

Is it possible to fix this? I want to say I can not change anything in the bios, because there bios insydeh2o which is locked so theres no option in the bios. AMD Contror Panel has options just to "energy saving" and "maximum performace" and who is not useful at all. Is it possible to allow fixed graphics or somethig like that?

    Any help would be grateful.

    Best regards, Ausrius.

It turns out that, graphic r5 works fine. Apparently intel graphics hd 4400 with intel core i5 was such a good experience for gta iv. And I expect more than r5. And there is always something wrong with gta iv. Despite all this I have max graphics settings for gta iv, monitor system amd sees it uses 60 to 80% of r5 and 80% of the precessor. But the thing is that I can play with these settings without any lag, if I keep the distance of less than 20% view. If I increase it to 50%, I'm starting to see the shift. And despite all this game always uses 80% of fraphics and over 80% of precessor. So that's it. No problem with graphics switchable. Oh, and it works very well also. I like the way things work.

DV7 6143 cl Windows 7 home Premium AMD HD graphics driver and graphics driver Intel high definition (HD)

Initial F13 BIOS updated F.1A year last = graphics adds support switchable mode fixed.

I have never even pondered graphics drivers or switchable graphics until recently. I use the computer for photographs, files ebook, documents and internet and the display was always beautiful.

Then I had a driver related stop isolated message and when I looked in the event viewer to find a large number of error messages = EEU ATI could not send a message to the CCC.

So I updated the driver AMD through the site of HP (sp55092.exe) support and the driver package apparently downloaded from the website of catalyst. When the installation has reached the stage where location is determined, that he did to x 86 files but said that the CCC folder does not exist. Let him create this folder and the installation was successful. I rebooted and everything seems fine.

Given that I have never changed the graphics settings:

Is it possible that they that management of the catalyst files did not exist before?

Would the BIOS earlier same supported graphics switchable?

    Hello

It is a bit confusing, however Intel download is included for dv7 models that don't have an Intel GPU and it would be the only situation when the Intel driver must be used - should really be listed as an option to download for your specific machine and depending on the version you tried, it would fail always to install.

With Intel/ATI switchable graphics card, so the drivers required are always installed with the software AMD option.

    Kind regards

I read the article on HP multifunctional compat re 975891 KB.  I couldn't find it.  I have a multifunction printer HP Color LaserJet 2840.  I use Win 7 64-bit.  The compatibility profile shows that this printer is compatible.  However, I can not FAX or Scan functions to work.  I go to Windows FAX and Scan screen and search system for devices.  None are found.  The printer works itself works, but does not offer any other features.  So what is the solution?  (It is connected to my network OK).  Other computers (Vista) can print OK.  But have the same problem with them for scanning.

I'm sure that Windows scan does support a local device unless the device supports protocols WSD.  HP would need to provide the software for detection of WSD devices no network. • Vidock 2 ATI HD4670 working with switchable graphic version T400/500 w?

this review , it seems clear the US $379 Vidock 2 with the desktop ATI Radeon HD 4670 card will work fine with an integrated graphics card only T400 running Windows 7.

But not the restriction of Vista to require that the display driver even if there are several graphics cards, see here , means that it would be possible to use Vidock 2 with a dedicated graphics processor (IE with switchable graphics architecture) T400/500 under Windows 7?

I know that in this case Vista would not support multiple monitors, but would it be possible to turn off the laptop LCD (Fn + F7 optionally?) to get the DVI monitor, attached to the Vidock 2 in turn connected through the ExpressCard to work properly under Vista? It should turn off switchable graphics in the Bios?

The answers would be the same for the 4 Vidock with the ATI Radeon HD 4890 which is supposed to deliver this month?

Vista restricting to a single driver of unique software for several graphics cards is filled for a 2 Vidock attached to my T500 because the ATI Catalyst driver is the same for HD 3650, HD 4670 and HD 4890. Worst case may be to define discrete graphics option (only) in the Bios. With same hopefully switchable graphics would work, starting with the built-in switchable graphics 9.5 ATI Catalyst in their vanilla desktop drivers.

I installed ThinkPad Switchable Graphics Driver for Windows 7 (64-bit and 32-bit) to my W500 ThinkPad running Windows 7 Ultimate RTM (x 64).

When I activate Intel GM45 (Energy Saving Graphics), collapsed screen was displayed.

This is a bug in the driver. If you have non matching memory size, then this will be the case. Must stick with ATi graphics card, up to what the pilot official windows 7 came out.

  • How to upgrade the graphics card with t500 20896kg

    Hello

I've been misled by some tests to the conclusion, that all the t500 would have this incredible "switchable graphics" and Announces. Ruse, simply create a good product and then 70 different versions with a lot less stuff inside - everyone will buy it, which is not a complete hardware nerd and knows all the numbers and things. In any case, I'm the fool who bought the T500 WITHOUT any graphics at all because Intel x4500HD is obviously not the use of a graphics card, he just pretended a. Not Fallout 3, no 'empty' (graph sucks pretty well, even if no laptop with an older map should have problems with it), no nothing.

It doesn't mean ANY modern game at all, 771,2 Mo 'RAM' Intel X4500HD or not - you know before or pay huge sums for games that do not work have Forum-Nerds laugh their bootys away on a silent client who fell the tricks of Lenovo (and Intel).

Yes, rantings side: is it possible to upgrade the T500 20896 kg - that goes without graphics card - with a real graphics card, would be the choice to choose and how do I insert it?
