R500 & 8 GB RAM

Everyone has upgraded its Thinkpad R500 with more than 4 GB of RAM? I think buying this model, but first I want to be sure that the hardware and BIOS supports 8 GB of RAM.

I ask, because there are some shops that offer them (not tested) with an upgrate up to 8 GB, because of the Intel PM45 Chipset, but without guarantee.

Thank you

no update of the bios, he is taken in charge in native mode, the document that says that the 4 GB limit was written when the modules only 2 GB have been announced.

Upgrading is really easy, take off your caused and you're home free... the ram slots is located below the touchpad palmrest area.

    Hello

    You can upgrade the RAM.
You can use the DDR2 667 MHz (PC2-5300) or 533 MHz 200 - PIN SODIMM modules.
You can use a 1 GB RAM module this is the max!
There is also an internal RAM which can be removed if only one slot is expandable!

Usually it s not advised to replace/upgrade of the processor because the BIOS has not been tested with other processors

    Hello

According to the specifications of the laptop your laptop can handle with GB of RAM, but has been bundled with 2 GB memory is not possible.

What about SSD? SSD upgrade is possible and you can use 256GB SSD for upgrade. After this system will be much faster, and you will certainly more performance and speed.

  • Portege R500 - can I use 3 GB of RAM?

    Hallo,
may I ask if there is a way to start with 3 GB of RAM, so to use the the 1 GB that he will not be able to see as a ramdisk?

    Thank you.

    Hello!

As far as I know that the Portege R500 can be upgraded to 2 GB of RAM. Therefore, you need DDR2 667 MHz RAM.

    > in order to use the the 1 GB that he will not be able to see as a ramdisk?
To be honest I n don't know what you mean with that.
With special tools, you can create a virtual disk in RAM. Google for it.

  • Portege R500 - after what ODD hardware upgrade will not read

Recently, I bought a vintage 2008 Toshiba R500-11Z laptop ultraportable. He needed a new keyboard, because most of the keys are dead, so I bought a new replacement (exact same keyboard, an eBay seller). I also decided to give a new breath of life by installing a SSD drive. The old keyboard was attached to the frame with some sort of sticky back plastic, which is not reusable, so for the new keyboard, I used a strong adhesive tape double-sided. Before you screw the plastic rear landing gear I installed Windows 7, with the loosely adapted landing gear up. Installation of Windows is complete and everything seemed fine. After screwing in the landing gear, I discovered that optics player his original "open-top" mat * a DVD-RAM UJ - 844-S would not read disks. He just made a noise 3 times but does not spin then upward as it normally would. Drive is visible in Explorer solutions and Device Manager.

After unscrewing the undercarriage, the relocation of the optical drive and rescrewing several times, I was not able to get the optical drive to play all discs. What I created is that the disc must be catching on the ceiling, thus signalling the reader to turns don't not upward; leaving the screws each side of the lander was allowed to create a gap, so there is more room between the optical drive and the ceiling of the laptop. Disks will then turn upward and Windows AutoPlay will open to them. What I can't work, it's what has changed in regard to the way in which the drive is mounted and its position relative to the ceiling above him. Or if the reader is now trying to turn a corner. There are two blocking screws that hold the drive in place, so that the reader must be at the same place its always been.

I was wondering if anyone has come across this problem before, and if there is an easy solution. According to me, I hit a wall of bricks on this one!

    Thanks in advance.

Just to say, after a lot of head scratching, I worked on the problem. I had made a mistake by attaching the clamp metal Assembly at the rear of the optical drive.

I had screwed the clip outside the Orange connector when he had to be inside (between the optical drive and the orange connector). It seems that it must have pushed the player to place just enough to prevent it from functioning properly.

  • Portege R500 - overheating?

    Hello

Recently one of my colleagues has experienced problems with its Portégé R500 laptop. The display becomes either black with white text (but the image is cut and very blippy) or the screen goes black in general. The laptop is very warm to the touch when this happens and if turned off then turned on the power LED lights, but no other LEDS as HARD drive / wireless as usual.

However, if during a few hours, it turns on the property. I decided it was overheated and was ready to RAM the machine, but when it came to me rehearsing heat / hardware failure with many stress tests the phone performed very well for hours even with 90-100% charged all the time.

This problem would anything other than overheating itself? I don't want to RMA a machine without symptoms, but at the same time, it is inappropriate to pass back to her so she can do her job on. I already have a can of compressed air, so this isn't the venitlation / fan is defective.

    Thank you very much.

    Hey Buddy,

Theoretically, it could be an overheating problem, but it could be another problem as well. This should be checked by a technician of the laptop. It is very difficult to say what is defective, so you need professional help.

It is good that you have already cleaned the fan using a jet of compressed air, but maybe the thermal compound must be renewed. Just ask a service provider authorized if it of necessary and if they can do it for you. :)

  • Upgrade memory Portege R500-100 for Windows 7

I would like to move from XP to Windows 7. The recommended RAM size is 2 GB. My R500 is equipped with 2 x 512 MB RAM modules. The manual says I can replace it with a 1 GB module. My question is if I can replace it by a 2 GB (or even 4 GB) module instead? If not, is it possible to change the module on the main Board, or which is fixed?

    Thanks for your help.

In my view, that there is another problem. According to specification for laptop, your laptop can handle with max 1 536 MB so I think it does not make sense to change the internal memory if value max is 1 536 MB only.

  • Portege R500 - CPU jump and stick to 100%

I had a problem with my laptop for the last 6-8 weeks, and it would be great if someone can suggest a possible cause/remedy.

I have a 10 month old toshiba R500 protected (processors Core 2 Duo 1.7 GHz, Intel GMA graphics, 2 GB of ram, 120 GB HDD, Vista)
It was useless. I already had 2 discs and a new hard drive.

The problem seems to arise every 2-3 weeks between episodes of the laptop works very well.

What is happening is the CPU at least 90-100% and stay there for between 2 and 10 minutes.
Of course, this slows down the computer, but it never breaks down.

I tried to refine what is the cause, but this happens when two itunes. Outlook or IE are open and arrived with them all open, or open one at a time. This has really left me stuck for what might be causing this and other suggestions of people to another too many open windows, too flash, etc. were not much help because of the many culprits.

This happened only with itunes open on its own.
This seems to be the most frequent cause, especially when playing music or sync an ipod/iphone.
I have all my music on an external drive that could possible was a factor? who knows?

I managed to note the below information from the Task Manager:

    Process window:
ITunes is to 36 in the CPU column with 110,00 k in column memory

    Window of performance:
    CPU: 100%
Memory: 1.24 (of 2g of memory)
    Pagefile: 1815/4313

If anyone has any suggestions as to what I could try that would be great. People suggest the factory resets and try xp and not vista so much, but if there are other suggestions out there I'd love to hear them!

    See you soon

    > That persists after a reboot, reboot takes about 20 minutes.
The restart should not take longer than 2-3 min in my opinion, that your operating system is simply confused upward

I've seen other discussions about the BISO update and it seems that this problem is related to the operating system that you are confused.

  • Is it possible to put 2 GB of memory in the Portege R500-11 b?

    Hello.
is it possible to put 2 GB memory in toshiba R500-11 b?
because by default, there is 1 GB of RAM?

    Thanks in advance!

    Hey!

Normally, it can be upgraded up to 2 GB memory. Therefore, you need DDR2-667 modules with 200pins.

You can buy it from each computer store or an authorized service provider. Upgrading RAM is also fairly easy. ;)

  • Where can I find XP x 64 drivers for Portege R500 - hotkey / power management?

Where can I find the downloads that will enable the power management or hotkey support for my Portege R500?

I already installed the drivers for everything except the fingerprint reader (do not want), tpm (really envy) and hdd (tos620a) motion sensor (not embarrassed at this time). Most of the drivers are recent original sites of the seller or, in the absence of those, leaving Toshiba 64-bit Vista download areas.

Everything else works generally: wifi, graphics & chipset, sound, lan, bluetooth stack, cardbus, card reader, etc.

However, after doing this, are the following questions:

FN keys do not work for suspend to ram, suspend-to-disk, * screen * brightness *-essential to extend the life. FN keys for digital/Board pad, rocker of external surveillance * work

Dedicated toggle backlight button does nothing

However, in order to get the lifetime of battery beyond ~2.5 hours and closest alongside 7.1 hours, I need to turn things down / stop occasionally. What software can help and where I can get, as it runs on Windows XP x 64 edition?

    Note:

I tried packages of 32-bit xp which provides Toshiba, they do not seem to work on x 64. The package 'chopsticks' requires 'cmod', but 'cmod' gives this error:

    Installation of Modules common TOSHIBA
Not an ACPI machine. Cannot install TOSHIBA ACPI peripheral logic.
    Ok

I tried the 32-bit xp package called 'pwrsav '; It installs a bad help link in my Start menu and adds a few exes, tpsmain and tpsoddctl, to my automatically starts. These 32-bit executables left immediately after execution.

I tried to install packages of 64-bit Vista from Toshiba hotkeys / common modules / power management, but the only one of the three I can find via toshiba.co.uk is the common modules, and unfortunately this zip file contains only .inf, .cat and .sys files, no program installation.

    Motivation:
I use a new installation at the same time because the default installation of Vista is unusable (900 MB of memory used on a fresh startup desktop, disk divided into several partitions, trial, adware and with broken software at left and right)
I use x 64 because I am software engineer the next product needs to work on x 64, and this new laptop was a likely first candidate

    Hello

    Bad news first :(

The European driver Toshiba page provides the drivers for XP 32 bit and Vista (32-bit & 64-bit).
I did find all the drivers for XP 64-bit OS.

As much as I know XP 64-bit drivers is not exist for one of the series of Toshiba laptops.

    Now a new better ;)

I found a tool called display Tuner.
It offers convenient access to the monitor settings, such as brightness, contrast, color settings.

Perhaps this is an option for you.
    Google a bit

  • Portege R500 - restarts instead of start, works only BIOS

    Hello

My R500, a little more than 2 years, always restarts before starting XP in graphical mode.
Sometimes also boot from the DVD. Access the BIOS or XP 'F8-Menu' is no problem...

Maybe the on-board graphics chip could be wiped out, would you agree? Just before the problem I tried to connect a projector on the VGA Port (what I had done many times before without problem).

Because somewhere on ebay, I spotted a device that seems to have the same problem, I have a little hope, it may be a known issue or someone has an idea about this?

    It's a great device, but atm I wouldn't money to buy a 2nd time... :-/

    Michael

    Hi Michael,

It's really hard to say why this is happening and theoretically what could be the reason for this: bad drivers, virus, CPU, RAM, motherboard, etc.

Before you think about exchanging your hardware, you must update the display driver. This is why start in safe mode and uninstall the display driver. After that, start Windows normally and try to install the new driver to display on the Toshiba site.

You wrote that this also happens if you boot from DVD. Have you tested the Toshiba Recovery disk? Normally it it shouldn't t happen.
    Check this box!

  • Portege R500 fails during POST

    Hi all

I have a Portege R500 for one year now and yesterday he started to fail during POST, I presume.
The display is blocked to the power on the screen with the icons boot device selection, but can take no decision (get into the bios by selecting the boot device, etc...). I already tried to remove the battery for a few hours, without result, but I guess that should be more than a few hours to exhaust the backup battery and reset CMOS...
Other than the splash screen, no other information is available, so I think that this machine is dead... Anyone had a similar problem?

    Best regards
    Paulo

    Hello

Normally this POST screen hanging means that a hardware component can t be recognized correctly. In your case, I would try removing the CD/DVD and HARD disk drive. Try also resetting the RAM modules.

If it doesn t work it seems to be a BIOS problem. Therefore, you should contact a service provider authorized in your country. They can try to reset the BIOS or reflash it.

  • Very slow application on Portege R500 laptop

    Hello

I'm having a problem with Sage Line 50 V13 - 2007 (please don't stop reading!) on two laptops of R500 Centrino Duo. Two laptops have 1 GB of RAM and U7600 1.2Ghz processors. I am posting this in the Sage forums and call wise too. All Sage updates are installed.

Registration of the activity of a single wise client causes Sage hang for a minute and twenty seconds before displaying the results. During this time that the EXE of Sage takes about 9% CPU, the CPU total use plane around 10%. Use of the network (switched 100 MB link) is about 1% use. Laptops are connected to the network, not to a docking station, and I tried the CPU frequency in the Toshiba Control Panel applet on strong and dynamic. It is not to open a report in an external program, this is purely Sage. Other laptops and computers open this screen activity in about a second, their specifications as follows:

Old Toshiba PentiumM 1.3 Ghz, 504 MB RAM
    XXX T7200 Core 2, 2 GHz 1 GB RAM
Destop PC: Intel 3040 @1. 86 Ghz Dual Core 1 GB

I tried to set the processor affinity Sage EXE process to one or the other CPU instead of two, to no avail.

All the world has the same problem? Thank you very much in advance for any ideas or suggestions.

Great info, it might be useful for someone else

  • R500 turns off after 1 minute

So I recently acquired a R500 (2714 with the Intel GPU type) which was not start due to an error of fan - have replaced the fan (note: I am not a novice, I have no experience of laptop repair) now, it starts for about 1 minute, then stops completely. In this case I have to remove all power (battery and AC out, then back in) before it will start again, where the same issue occurs. The fan is running without a doubt, the computer laptop is not even warm up before that happens, I tried full and stripped to the point where the fan was replaced and without hard disk, DVD player and wireless card. Also removed RAM, of course at this point, that it would not POST, but it always stops after the same amount of time. Tried different RAM well known too. Reset the CMOS without result.

My gut says the Council shot. I have a CPU to spare I would try, if it will make a difference. Anything else I can try?

    Thank you

Is the CC and the cable in place properly? If it has been damaged during the replacement of the fan?
