RAID-5 performance of LSI SAS 2008 m - 8i in C240 M3?

Anyone can take the floor to exercise the option of controller RAID mezzanine in the C240, especially in a RAID-5 configuration? I need set up a C240 with all 5 PCIe slots consumed with interface cards, so I'll need to use the mezzanine card option. The 2008 m does not support a BBU, but what I understand, it supports the write cache and has a processor shipped to XOR to unload so I expect it has correct performance of RAID-5/50. I can't seem to find the guides or documentation only.

Finally, we replaced Cisco UCSC RAID SAS 2008 M - 8i (SLOT-MEZZ) with LSI MegaRAID SAS 9271-8i with memory cahce and BBU (with SuperCap TMM-C) and helped write back cache policy - drive performance fantastically improved.

    Hello!

I have a serious stability problem and I am not able to understand how to solve.

I have an IBM ServerRaid M1015 (oem of a LSI-9220-8i version) I reflashed with the ISIS software (9210-8i IT mode, but see below for details).

When I started with ESXi and create a virtual machine with a big virtual disk (90% of the physical disk), the creative process hangs after some time (about 10% for a vdisk 145GB on a 160 GB pdisk)

and I get a lot of 'stuff' in the file vmkernel.log (see attachment logfiles). Finally, ESXi will be purple screen and die.

I seem to be able to make the small diskaccesses with no problems.

To test if it's a hardware problem, I have:

    • I did a new install of Debian - 6.0, and there everything works without problem.
    • I only did a new install of Solaris-11u1 no problem here too: the controller was FAST!
    • I tried to move the controller to another host (HP DL120 G6), same problem here.
    • I even tried to buy another controller (which worked perfectly with the included IBM software but after that I have reflashed with the LSI-9210-8i IT firmware, that he was not only the first)
    • I tried a cable cutter instead of HP backplane to be sure it wasn't the bottom of basket that gave me problems.
    • I tried to move the map to another location PCIe cable 8087 to the other port on the controller card.

    The system configuration:

    • VMware: ESXi - 5.1.0update1 (build 1065491)

I have attached the log files from the system. Is anyone able to point me in a direction for a fix? Or any who have used IBM M1015 (in mode IT) with VMware - 5.1

This starts to become just a little frustrating! :-)

I cannot conclude 100% but it seems to be a driver problem ESXi or the combination of firmware and driver.

    Hello!

It seems that VMware ESXi 5.5 have a conflict pilot with different controllers in the same machine at the same time.

I have been using the LSI AND the controller on the motherboard for extra drive supported.

When I only disks on the controller LSI wanished of problems!

I have why it worked in the Debian and Solaris with disks on both controllers, but not in ESXi. I tried to level the firmware and drivers of LSI, but he will get unstable on me when using different types of controllers at the same time.

  • LSI SAS 9211-8i performance problem. (2 MB/s)

    Hello

I got the LSI SAS 9211-8i adapter to implement an ESXi 4.1 server to host a set of virtual machines.

I attached 8 6 GB/s Western Digital HDDs to the adapter and put into RAID 10.

Everything was OK during the installation and initial configuration, but when it came time to transfer all the virtual machines in this

individual ESX server, the best data transfer rate was somewhere between 2-3 MB/s.

I've already updated the BIOS and the firmware in the adapter, but still no luck getting it to transfer more quickly.

Only time wherever I was able to get improved data transfer speeds was when I removed the RAID and had all 8 disks individually,

But even in this case, the performance was so-so. (4-5 MB/s).

NOTE: If I connect a hard drive to the motherboard and install ESXi 4.1 on the disc, the speed of data transfer are very good.

    Data sheet:

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Motherboard: ASUS P6X58D-E

    Processor: Core i7 950

    RAM: 24 GB DDR3

    hard drive: Western Digital WD5002AALX

    NIC: Intel PRO/1000MT

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

I would really appreciate if anyone has ideas or suggestions.

    Kind regards

    Mikey

Yes, it is built to a price. There is nothing wrong with it. LSI has just removed features (cache and the option to add it) to make it to sell for a price conscious buyer.

  • ESXi on SD card and virtual machines on a NAS raid-6, performance?

    Hello!

I'm planning an ESXi with HP Proliant DL380 G6 environment, which I already have.

The server has an internal port SD card and according to this article , it is supported to run ESXi from an internal SD card.

    1ST QUARTER

Someone hwo as tried this, what of the downside to this, except the redundancy on the SD card. I had a hard time finding comments on this

    Q2

I intend to run virtual machines on a NAS via iSCSI, (thecus N8800, have another thread on the subject to know if it would work or not here)

With this config I don't need any HD in the DL380.

However, I do not know if a good high-performance NAS is good enough for my VMs and if maybe I need to run the OS on internal disks with higher performance.

First of all, my plan was to run the OS partitions on a raid with internal 10 k SAS drives. And have all the data on the NAS partitions.

But since I'm the new implementation of ESXi on SD or USB I think about the ability to run the DL380 without HD

But, as noted above, is it possible that there is performance enough for that.

Having in mind that my environment is and will be VERY LOW, we speak up seven windows server 2008 and totally 150 users.

But I still haven't any idea if theres a chance that my 7 virtual machines running windows server 2008 will be capped at a lot by running NAS. The Nas will take place with eight 7.2 k RPM Sata disks, they are high of preforming sata drives, but not yet a SCSI raid. I have the ability to run a raid 10 on it instead of 6 and I will consider and try how much better performance, he gives me. 1 TB sata drives are 70% less expensive than the 300 GB 2.5 '' SAS 10 k disks.

Yes, there is a good reason THAT SATA is less expensive than SAS.  SATA drives do not have the same command line than to use SAS drives, more the bottom of basket on SATA relies on the CPU, SAS can unload it on DEMAND.  The discs themselves seem to be competitive, but they are a far cry from the performance of SAS/SCSI, you get good performance until you start to make the e/s simultaneous sessions and hit heavily then you'll start to see performance degrades

If do you some tests and that you are happy with it, still great.  I really hope it works well.  RAID 10 can be a good idea with SATA, which can help to compensate for this loss of performance.

The PIN number is the best way to get the best performance, the physical drives of player throw you into a RAID of any kind the better you will be.

    Seagate Barracuda ES. 2-1 TB - 3.5 "- SATA-300 - 7200 tours min - lunch: 32 MB"

  • LSI sas to pvscsi

I changed my scsi lsi sas to pvscsi adapter, but then the 2012 server will not start. What is the process to change the adapter? Is there a great performance benefit to LSI sas to pvscsi?

    Thank you

RDM will be still less resources than VMDK. This may not always translate into better performance. In this case, you really have to do a few tests to decide what will be the ideal combination for your specific virtual machines. But, Yes, MDM with pvscsi must have the best performance of all the scenarios.

  • HP Z820 - BIOS 02.55 rev A - SSD on LSI SAS 2308 do not start... "Non-system disk...". »

    Hello

MY Z820 workstation is equipped with an Intel 520 240 GB SSD as boot drive, on the integrated LSI SAS 2308 controller. It is a GPT disk.

I just tried to update my BIOS Rev 02.08 Z820. at 02.55 a. rev.

The update succeeded, and in the BIOS, I check that all the settings are the same as before the update. On the boot, however, I get an error saying "Non system disk or disk error."

Mass strorage option ROM is set to EFI mode.

No matter what the settings, it does not start in Windows.

I started 02.08 BIOS Rev A and now all is well again.

Is there a compatibility issue with the BIOS 02.55 Rev A combo, Intel SSD 520 and LSI SAS 2308?

  • LSI SAS HBA Boot disabled R720

How can we disable LSI SAS HBA to start? I JBOD connected to it and do not want to analyze and attempt to start on reboot or start the process

I believe that you can accomplish this by entering in BIOS and under integrated devices click on the invalidity of the slot. For the specific PCIe slot set the invalidity of the slot to "Boot driver disabled. This will allow the slot be visible to the OS, but it is not available as a boot device.

Are there differences in performance between them?

no gain.  SAS controller is required for MSCS 2008 and will be available only if vHardware is 7, but it's really the only time wherever you will use it.  LSI Logic P is the controller of choice

  • RAID 5 performance problem

    Hello

I am not very savvy storage but I have a performance problem, and I don't know where to look...

I have 2 x Esx 4 server, are twice as much HP Proliant dl380 G5 with local storage

    first to have 8 x 146 g in raid 5 and I can receive 70000 Kbps

    Second 4 x 300 g in raid 5 and I can only had 10000 Kbps

The first is 7 times faster why?

The battery allows to use write cache. There is the huge performance without cache enabled writable. I don't think that you can activate the cache in writing on these controllers without the battery. Without a battery and the cache in write on you would trash your VMDK if the power is out or you did a hard power down.

  • RAID 1 storage maximum reaching SAS 6 IR

    Hello support team,

I work with a Dell PE T310 and uses a Windows 7 OS. The controller card is an iR SAS 6, RAID 1 configuration and reach maximum capacity.  I want to add more storage without losing any data.

The configs of the BIOS of the controller is listed below:

    SAS6IR - Bus PCI: 03 / Dev PCI: 00 / PCI Fnc: 00 / FW revision: 0.25.47.90 - IR / status: enabled / Boot Order: 0

    Picture 1 of 1
    Dell virtual disk 1028 identifier
    Type RAID 1 (IM)
    Analysis of order 0
    size 237824
    Optimal situation

NUM / RAID DISK / HOT spare / Drive Status / Pred Fail / Size (MB)
    0 - ATA WDC WD2502ABYS - 13B 05 / YES / NO / primary / NO / 238418
    1 - ATA YES / NO/secondary / NO / 238418
    2 No. ATA / YES / HOT spares / NO / 238418

    1. How can I add more storage without losing any data?

    2. can I use (2 - ATA) drive that is not used in the Raid listed for HOT spare (not seen in disk management) for RAID 0 because the 4 drive Bay is empty at the moment or if it should / could be used for another HARD drive and sets up another RAID 1? which leads to my next question:

    3. 3 drive bays are used, only the drive Bay HARD 4 a mesh metal. Can I add another HARD disk and set up for extra storage?

    R /.

    NEhmz

Yes, if you add a 2 TB drive and configure RAID with the 250 GB drive, then your RAID 1 will not be 250 GB, which means you'll be wasting disk 750Go 3.

In order to use disc 2 for what it IS, you must first cancel the assignment as a hot spare (hot-spare parts are reserved as readers of Eve to the RAID arrays and are not visible to the OS).  No, it can be used as a stand-alone, no RAID disk, or you can configure it in RAID 1 (integrated mirror - IM) with a second disk.

  • How to recover lost partition

I had a configuration of RAID 5 array on LSI SAS 9260 card for data storage and a SATA drive for my operating system partition. I had a problem with WIndows 7 so I'm a new SATA drive and tried to run HP Restore Plus to install Windows 7 on the new SATA drive. Problem is that HP Restore more installed Windows 7 on my RAID 5 array, making me lose my data. I tried to retrieve lost partition (or at least the data on that partition) by using Active @ Partition Recovery and Minitool Partition Recovery, but I can't seem to find the partition. I am a novice when it comes to RAID, so I don't know if I'm missing something that would allow me to recover my data on my RAID Array. The table is installed on the LSI 9260 RAID card. Does anyone have experience with the recovery of data on a lost RAID partition?

  • MD3420 SAS connection to two servers R720 (2008 R2)

    Hello

I was looking for some suggestions to my two servers for both see a table of MD3420 in the shared storage.  The idea of the preview is here: http://i.imgur.com/UeWyLvg.jpg

Initial Setup was very easy.  I installed the Dell MD storage software.  MPIO is installed, as is the Manager of SAN storage.  I have been able to put an IP address for management on the Bay, you connect and create a disk group.    After that, I could see the numbers of identifier for the host two and made port mapping that seemed correct host.  Once I did, I expected the partition not formatted in disk management in Windows.  I don't know where to go from here.   I have updated firmware on the table, which went well.  I looked in the Storage Manager for the without and he sees the LUN (even if it says uknown number.)  Any help is appreciated.

    Additional information:

    OS: Windows 2008 R2 Standard

    Bus adapter: www.lsi.com/products/host-bus-adapters/pages/lsi-sas-9300-8e.aspx

PowerVault: MD3420 with a single SAS module card

    Thank you!

I just spoke with Tech Support.  It seems that the problem is that there is no grouping installed between servers.  Unfortunately 2008R2 Standard does not support this, so it seems that we have to upgrade to the enterprise.

    Thanks for your time.

There are debian running on a Raid 5.  The HDs spin down and even with megacli, I could not convince them to do so. The server of the idling consumes 110W@1,6ghz, which is high. Any ideas?

    Hello Stefan,

The controllers LSI with the PE840-supported were the SAS 5iR and PERC 5 / i. None of these spin down supported, which was not available until the H700/H800 in 2009. If you have a different controller LSI (not necessarily one a Dell brand) let me know what model and I might be able to help the conclusion of the procedure documentation to set up a physical drive individual spin-down.
