RAID - vs-StableBit DrivePool

System: PowerEdge T320, 8 Hot Swappable 3.5 "bays

OS: Windows Server 2012 Essentials

RAID Controller: Controller Perc 710

I need to have several physical disks appear in the operating system like big disk to hold 4 + TB of data backup.

I'm using RAID 5.

On another forum that a number of people make a convincing case that I have to use StableBits DrivePool instead.

What do you think of who experts?

Thank you

Andrew

I think that StableBits is not designed to replace the hardware RAID on the servers.  I personally don't use it in a production environment without first tested its robustness in real applications.

Also keep in mind that PERC does NOT support no RAID, so the only way to present StableBits with individual drives is first configure each of your physical disks as a single drive RAID 0.

Personally, I jump StableBits and configure your disks in a RAID 10 or RAID 6.  For a 4 TB RAID 10, you can use discs of 8x1TB (or 4x2TB) - it gives you great performance and good redundancy.  For a 4 TB RAID 6, you can use discs of 6x1TB (or 4x2TB) - performance would be substantially the same as RAID 5, but you would better redundancy than RAID 5, particularly important when it comes to storage in the amount that you're talking about. performance will be lower than RAID 10, particularly on the Scriptures.  I think that StableBits might be a good replacement for RAID 5, given the history of reliability and performance of RAID 5, but I'd probably only consider that if I need the storage capacity of a RAID 5 (on RAID 10) AND my controller had no opportunity to do the RAID 6 (or was only JBOD).

Whatever it is, do you a favor and you readers of the portable computer/office/consumer class.

  • synchronization of the RAIDs at 2 different locations

I recently started to work in 2 different places and must find a way to keep my 15 TB + of the continually changing and growing data (in RAID 0 training photoshop files) practice at both locations at any time.

My best idea so far is to get a 15 TB portable working drive that I bring with me back and then continue to a RAID of TIME stationary MACHINE at each location who save permanently this portable work in car...

If anyone has a better idea, please advise.

Keep your valuable data on a striped RAID is dangerous. Sometimes interlaced RAID adds speed, but in case of disk failure, is likely to result in a total loss of all data without hope of a partial recovery.

Put data of Time Machine on a mirrored RAID is a loss of readers.

Time Machine can alternate automatically readers to keep two (or more) independent backup series. Just add the second drive and it automatically alternates.

As always, you can use AppleRAID or an external RAID enclosure for the construction of a concatenated RAID set that resembles a drive for Mac OS X.

  • RAID is no longer present in the storage "about this mac".

  • Time Machine NAS RAID

Goal: large, reliable Time Machine back-up.

(No purpose: archiving.) I do that separately on optical carriers per year, double copies, which goes off site. I understand that optical media can degenerate over time - even if some are marketed as "of archive-quality" - and therefore based on a cloud of archiving is the way to go but for now he takes too much bandwidth and I'm worried about security. I recently got a burner external blu - ray: exceptional.)

Question: can I use RAID for Time Machine if I connect by USB directly on my computer?

Issue 1: reliability external drive. This has happened twice that I bought a property, brand, large external hard drive and was prematurely fail at a difficult time. My local computer guru said "it happens" and is "unpredictable" and just buy a new one, most won't. Or, for better quality, get a NAS - network attached storage that can be attached, they have the temperature control, mine is a RAID 2 discs, so there is that the degree of redundancy - but not, I learn, protect against a corrupt Time Machine backup and that can happen, or power increases (although it is on a high-tech power bar) , or theft, etc.

Problem 2: using NAS, which I connected to a Terminal Airport Express via an Ethernet cable - if connected to the computer by WiFi - the Time Machine backup becomes a "sparsebundle" (set of files, in fact), encrypted file with password (?) drive access. However, this was work and I did a full restore of your data (no 'system') the other day with Migration Wizard when I got a new hard drive installed in my old iMac (also upgraded at the time of 10.9 to 10.11). It took over all night, but the wonder of wonders, it chugged along and finished and seems fine. (I have not checked tens of thousands of files individually!)

(My SIN explicitly supports Time Machine, and I checked that box in the configuration of the SIN, and it seemed to work.) I didn't have to leave the mounted drive. Time Machine found hourly and used invisibly in the background.)

Problem 3: I have rename my hard drives for some reason any and do not remember quite what its name was. I wonder if this is part of my problem (read more). But there is a method in Time Machine to 'Browse other discs of backup. " I was looking for a file that I kept outside my usual login "user" and so had not been returned when I used Migration Assistant for data recovery only.

However, when I do this, then nothing is there. I've learned that sometimes, with an encrypted sparsebundle, wireless backup, you will have to let Time Machine sit for a few minutes before the back-ups start to appear, but now, with my new hard drive (with a new name) and the new version of the OS, there is simply nothing; just 'today' that shows only my current hard drive status. Obviously, there was something, or Migration Assistant wouldn't have worked, but during the inspection of the backup via Time Machine, the file seems to be here (whatever_my_computer - name_was.sparsebundle), but it is empty.

If I just try to navigate in the Finder to the sparsebundle NAS Time Machine, I can find it but not to open it. Double click: nothing happens. It is not that I forgot to connection settings, this is what it do not ask me for them.

This happened to me twice and the first time was the day after archiving (luck and good planning) and I thought that it is a kind suddenly lucky, but now it happened again.

So, I tried a bit of searching and not found a clear answer to my question above. I do not see these links:

    TEM http://www.petemarovichimages.com/2013/11/24/Never-use-a-RAID-As-Your-Backup-sys.

    https://support.Apple.com/en-CA/HT201250

    https://discussions.Apple.com/thread/7448896?start=0 & tstart = 0

    https://discussions.Apple.com/thread/5849068?TSTART=0

Of them, it seems that a NAS that has an explicit ability to Time Machine might work (mine did), but is not fully functional, not approved by Apple and is completely unpredictable. My limits are described above. (I work around them).

However, moving forward: I have this RAID 2 discs sitting around, seemingly more reliable than a drive external non-temperature controlled, and I wonder about the connection by USB directly on my computer. What is the downside of this? That is my question. Who will 'normally' work as a Time Machine backup external drive?

Another option is to get two large external hard drives and the value of Time Machine to switch between the two. I have not tried, but apparently it was possible for the last iterations little Mac OS X.

I have important data that requires careful management.

    Thank you all,

    Charles

I use a direct attached Drobo (it is a very easy to use RAID device).

I've always had problems with Time Machine on the network, so I stopped using it in this way. I've never had problems with the TimeMachine and direct-attached storage.

With the Drobo if a disk goes bad, I buy a replacement and hot it swap for the failed drive.

  • Backup Restore Time Machine does not see RAID external drive

    Hi all

I have a problem with my iMac restore from a Time Machine backup, and I was wondering if anyone else had the same problem already.

I had to reinstall OS X El Capitan from scratch, based on education, I received Support from Apple. That worked without problems and my iMac works fine. However, I wanted to restore it to how it was before, using Time Machine. I keep my backups on a LaCie 5big Thunderbolt 2 and never had any problems with it.

To restore the system, I followed the instructions on the Support page. I restarted my system in recovery mode and selected the "restore from Time Machine backup". Unfortunately the LaCie 5big does not appear on the list of drives, so I'm stuck... When you use the system in normal mode, the external RAID is visible and Time Machine stores backups on it without any problem.

Any of you are familiar with this problem? I would be very grateful if you could help me with this problem!

    Kind regards

    Valerio

    Hello

-While the system is booted in recovery mode, confirm that the Lacie 5big network is visible in disk utility.   You will need to disconnect / reconnect the Thunderbolt cable to the Lacie 5big be detected.

-Once seen, a new attempt to restore from Time Machine backup.

    See you soon

  • Mac Mini server RAID spoil

This follows a previous thread of mine.  Previously, the Mac mini server (2009, 3.1 I think) would not start.  The Apple logo and the spinning wheel seems forever.

I found the boot disk and a USB optical drive and so I went in disk utility.  I got the software RAID 1 set up.  Hard drives were fine, physically, but the whole RAID said it is "degraded" and one of the volumes said it failed.  I tried rebuilding it but failed.  I did not delete the volume down, instead, I deleted the whole RAID, thinking that I would be able to start the disks as standalone.  Instead, or volumes are mounted, they not only mount when I click Mount, and when I turn on the machine, I now get the folder with the?.  No volumes appear when I hold down the option key when starting.  I tried discs of fixation of the Terminal and he says they were mounted with success, but they were not.  I must be missing something in the commands, I don't know them well.  I tried to create a new RAID array, but he said that all the data would be deleted.  At any given time, two RAID volumes said that they failed, and then the RAID array would not appear or appear offline as opposed to gradient.

I screwed myself by removing the raid array?  Both drives are dismantled and their partition type is "Apple_RAID_Offline".

Can I fix this and back up my data?

I fixed readers are not mounted or named myself.  They are (were) mounted as an independent non-RAID drives.  They needed to be repaired and could not repair one of them says however, disk utility.  Disk utility also told me at my backup files and wipe the readers.  How can I back up my files if I can't start the machine?  There is no Finder on Mac OS X Server installation disc.

    Any suggestions?

Now I Steelworkers my bootable thumbdtive (who was be Yosemite) to start my el capitan backup and it crashes at the end. Looks like that because raid 0 for Mac will not create a recovery partition, I do a recovery Internet now just to recharge the mac from scratch... Any ideas on how I should address?

    Hi Isakale,

I understand that you're having trouble for OS X installed and restored from your Time Machine backup. In a situation where you work with a configuration of non standard volume for your OS X installation, you can consider installing OS X of the recovery of the Internet, the upgrade to the desired version of Mac OS X via the App Store, then your Time Machine data migration using the Migration Wizard, rather than recovery.

Migration Wizard copies all your files to your new Mac so that you do not have to the do it manually. If your files are currently on a Windows PC, follow the steps in the migration of the PC instead. If your new Mac uses OS X Mountain Lion or earlier, follow the steps of Mountain Lion instead.

Recent Macs include the ability to run directly from a Web OS X Recovery version. Your Mac will automatically use this feature when the recovery on the startup disk system is not available. For example, if your boot drive is a problem, or if your boot drive has been replaced or deleted. Recovery of the Internet allows you to start your Mac directly from Apple servers. This system starts running a quick test of your memory and the hard disk to check for hardware problems.

Recovery of the Internet initially asking you to select a Wi - Fi network and enter a password for the network if necessary. Then Internet recovery downloads and starts from a system recovery image. From there on, offers the same options and utilities like system recovery on a startup disk.

Some Mac shipped with OS X Snow Leopard can use Internet after installation of OS X Lion or later and a software update.

  • Silent, quick config RAID for Mac Pro DAW

I'm looking for ideas for storage configuration for my Mac Pro ' 09. This is the heart of a campus radio station / recording studio. The machine is a beast, and it serves my purposes very well. That said, the storage on board certainly needs an upgrade. Recently, I ran DriveDx to check the health of disks, and several of them are almost 30,000 hours. Right now, we lack a RAID 0 2 x WD RE3 750 GB (circa 2009) and 2 x Seagate 750Go (to 2008). Disks run without problem, but they are relatively slow and old (max ~100MB/s WD; ~75MB/s Seagate). In addition, I'm really not comfortable running a raid interlaced offshore of different styles of hard drives.

I am looking to buy four new disks. Here's my wish list:

Minimum of 1 TB of capacity

    Optimized RAID

    Reliable

    Quiet

    Relatively fast

    Not horribly expensive

Does anyone have advice? I've been looking around for a while, but it has been difficult to find a good combination of these features. Or, if you have any other ideas I'm open to that as well. Thank you!

    Mac Pro 4.1

    2.26 GHz 4 x 2

    32 GB OF RAM

    3 x GeForce GT 120

You can install one or more SSD Drives slightly faster than the 375 M bytes/s supported by the drive bays and get excellent results and not need a RAID at all.

  • Problem with XServe and XServe RAID via Fibre Channel

    Hello everyone,

I have a problem with my blended Xserve RAID.

I see in RAID-Admin and configure it successfully (via Ethernet). Connect with our Xserve via Fibre Channel, but the XServe and XServe RAID do not detect each other.

The fiber on the Xserve channel LEDs are white on the Xserve RAID completely off and permanent.

RAID-Admin status of Fibre Channel: 'No connection (1 table)' with a red square.

If I try to open the utility of fiber channel I get the message: "card Fibre Channel is not found." Utility disk OS X can't, too.

I changed the card connector cable, and made several reboots. But each time the same thing: they do not detect each other.

    Xserve (2009):

    -2.26 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon 5500

-Map of Apple dual-channel 4 Gb Fibre Channel (LSI7204EP)

    XServe RAID:

-RAID 5 in an array (only on the left with 5 x 500 GB)

    -1.5.1 Firmware

-Cable Apple 4 Gb SFP - SFP

Thanks for your help and sorry for my bad English!

    Hi Mpm-Mainz,

Check if you have enabled LUN masking. To be able to see, you will need to download raid admin 1.5 not the 1.5.1

    Xserve RAID Admin Tools 1.5

Have you also tried to use the other controller? Even if there is no disc in there, then it should appear in the preferences of fiber card system.

    Thank you

  • SSDS must be similar in size and type to raid 0?

SSDS must be similar in size and type to raid 0?  I have a 2009 MBP 2.66 bicoeur.  SSDS are an old sata 250 GB Samsung 850 pro III and an all new Intel 160 GB (320 series) sata II.  The hard drive on the MBP interface is 3.0 GB/s sata optical drive interface is 3.0 Gbit/s

Different size, different brand, sata II issue III v?

If it works, it will be almost double the read and write rates, I understand.  I am aware of the increased risk of data loss.  Will only use for backup data.

How is it difficult to set up raid 0?  I don't know the first thing about raid 0, 1, 2, 3?

    Thank you

    Stu

If it works, it will be almost double the read and write rates, I understand.

RAID offers for the SECOND and the following read/write of the same LARGE file acceleration and not otherwise. Any intervention of reading or writing in different files eliminates the acceleration. Any acceleration is much more dramatic on rotating discs, because it can eliminate some of the 10 ms or more long 'dead time' while the reader is a new track and the controller must wait for the correct data go in the position under the read/write head. Acceleration on the low-latency SSDS is far less dramatic.

The system drive / boot is particularly bad choice for a RAID, it reads and writes small random files in all directions. Who will get no acceleration.

You can best be served by creating a workflow that allows separate readers for the source files to Destination files, files of zero and drive system / boot.

    --------

RAID is usually done on the disks that are exactly or nearly the same. Too slow response of one of the discs can cause the RAID failure.

RAID support has been removed the disc utility GUI in 10.11 ElCapitan, probably because too many casual users got into trouble with the built-in GUI functions. You need to use the diskutil command in the Terminal, or buy the SoftRAID(4) package.

  • Install windows on mac pro (early 2008) in other SSDS with RAID card

Guys, good evening to all the same time.

I get out of this crazy short, I ask humbly help.

    I explain my problem:

I have a Mac Pro (early 2008), with RAID CARD MEDIA

He does not then I "gave" to my mother who must use windows for work.

I'm out all 4 disks in RAID installed and mounted 2 - SSD OCZ Agility 256 GB.

one of them is installed OSX Yosemite. on the other hand, I want to install WINDOWS.

    and here the problems begin:

When I insert the win8.1 to proceed installation standard dvd (EFI not talked since the beginning of 2008), I get, when I have to decide on which disk to install and format windows, does not reveal the installed drives

After 2 days of tweaking, I was able to understand that this is a problem due to the RAID card installed, I also read that you just remove it and connect the SSD in one of the two doors empty ODDsata (and not in the 4 planned the raid card slots)

but still does not see the attached HDD / SSD, so keep trying and I think it's a driver problem and I need to install the AHCI driver, now, I'm pretty Nerd, but I still can't get.

Someone could want explain step by step what I need to do to install this * win on MacPro 8.1 designed for RAID card?

Thank you so much in advance.
