RAW image workflow problem

I met a strange behavior on the Minolta RAW image processing. (This strange behavior has occurred for the first time in the last series of images. I have used this workflow at least a year.)

Minolta RAW is not recognized by iPhoto so I used Adobe DNG Converter to produce DNG files.

The original RAW files typically were 12.1 MB on the disk. DNG files vary in size, but were usually between 7 and 9 MB, but strangely, the dimensions are given in 256 x 192.

When they are imported into iPhoto, the definition is, as you'd expect, is not good.

If I edit a DNG file or iPhoto using Photoshop, then save them on the desktop as the jpeg, the result is a file which is usually 5 MB in size, but the dimensions are 3264 x 2448. This file can be re-imported into iPhoto and the results are perfect.

Of this, I infer that the camera records the data correctly and that it is stored in the file, but what went wrong during the conversion from RAW to DNG?

Thanks for any help.

Jim,

I can't reproduce the problem, because I work with Windows. This seems wrong; I hate it, when the software is being too intelligent and prevents from functioning correctly. Adobe also makes this rubbish, for example keeping the ACR adjustment settings in a database.

I'm sorry but I can't contribute to the solution. I thought that the problem is in the content of the DNG file, but it seems to be in the records of the IPhoto. I did a search and found that when you import photos into IPhoto, it opens each image and creates several smaller of the versions. However, I am sure you know much more about what I am doing (as it is as I know about this).

Anyway, have a good year and a best photo management system.

  • I have a problem for editing raw images in CS6 Adobe Bridge camera

When I right click on a raw image in Bridge CS6 and choose "Open in raw" I get a slightly different edition format compared to when I double click on the same raw image.

Right click gives me the following settings options: temperature, tint, exposure, contrast, highlights, shadows, white, black, clarity, Vibrance and Saturation

Double click gives me a message "convert to the 2010 process.  When I click on that, I have the following setting options: temperature, tint, exposure, recovery, fill, black light, brightness, contrast, clarity, Vibrance, Saturation.

I prefer the adjustment tools provided with the right click option.  : However, after I do the image settings using this option and I click on "Open image", the image disappears and open Photoshop, but there is no picture.  I'm fairly certain that I used this option right-click before and after adjustment of the image and clicking on 'Open image' image appeared in Photoshop where I could make a further editing and/or save in JPEG.  But no more.  What is the problem?  I'm doing something wrong?

Thank you kindly in advance for your comments of support.

You should not see this difference by double-clicking just by right clicking. What you mentioned by right clicking is the old Camera Raw and is no longer used. The new way is actually much better, even if it takes a bit to use to. I didn't like it at first, but now I find much better, there are a few problems with fixes that work much better with the new method. Normally you won't get the old method, if a file has been fixed with it. You can reset the image on the failure to have the new method to take effect.

  • Hello everyone, I'm having a problem at the opening of the RAW images in Photoshop...

Hello everyone. I was just trying to work on some on my Photoshop & from their opening RAW images, I get the message: If you try to open a file from a digital camera raw, make sure that you have the latest camera raw update installed via help > updates... (but when I go to help, it does not give me these options). I use a canon 6 d and it shows that it should support the minimum CR sheet in version 7.3. Please let me know if anyone of you knows how to solve this problem, thanks

    Hi Helen,

Go to the list of system information that Chris mentioned and under required plugins that camera raw should be listed. You can see I'm version 9.5, but as you use CS6 you can use the version the most recent is 9.1. Your camera requires a minimum of version 7.3 so if you get the 9.1 version then it should work without a doubt.

I don't know if you have a Mac or Windows machine then here are the download links for both. Do not be tempted to try v9.5 as her for CC only. As Chris pointed out you lack a lot of updates and you can find the camera raw 9.1 will not work until they are installed, but there is not much to lose by installing v9.1 and just see if it works.

    Hope that helps

  • I just bought a DMC-TZ70 Lumix, but thw RAW images are not supported in the elements.  Is there a way to turn the problem?

I just bought a DMC-TZ70 Lumix, but thw RAW images are not supported in the elements.  Is there a way to turn the problem?

    According to this faq:

FAQ: Photoshop Elements will work with my camera, or why does not open my raw files?

    Devices supported by Camera Raw

your camera requires the ACR 9.0 module which is only available in PSE13 after update (menu help/update).

If you have an older version of elements, the free solution is to use the DNGconverter mentioned in the faq above with the download links.
This stand-alone software converts all of a folder of your raw files to DNG format raw that older versions of items can read and modify.

  • My raw image files must be in one place?

I'm trying to figure out where my raw image files should be when I download in Lightroom. I've been using Bridge and I usually download them to the desktop, treat bridge, back up a folder with JPEGs raw and treated later move them to our server and remove it from my office. Should I just download the server now that I use Lightroom?

Well, I do not know which server/network you are using, but many people use servers storage for their photos with no problems at all.

My recommendation is to ALWAYS put the photo in the folder/drive desired straight out of the camera. (In other words, put the photos on the server). My recommendation is to ALWAYS - do not put the photos in a place and move them later (it's more work!)

Now, that being said, if your network/server is problematic in some way, then you would be better to put photos on your hard drive, but I think a better solution is to solve the problem of network and put photos directly on the server.

Tanuj speaks to "read and write access", that shouldn't be a problem because you can set the read and write access on what it takes. I don't know why it's a problem for him, maybe he can explain more (and you only need read access to your photos for editing in Lightroom to work).

  • Change how ACR interprets color space for raw images

When you browse the raw (CR2) photos with the OS X finder, I love the way color is represented, it corresponds very closely to the camera in preview. However, Bridge/ACR/Lr all interpret the color space of files differently good raw, and I wonder if there is a way to put these programs according how OS X finder restores raw images.

Color space isn't the issue.  I think what you see with OS X finder is the embedded jpg file has been generated by the camera and saved in the RAW file for viewing, and it should look identical to the jpg of the camera.  The adobes in Camera RAW and Lightroom RAW converter uses the Adobe Standard profile of the camera as the default profile to the camera to generate an RGB from the RAW data image and you can save the image as a jpg, tif, etc. with any colorspace you select (sRGB, ProPhoto RGB, etc.).

Adobe has generated camera profiles for Canon, Nikon and a few other cameras that are a good match for the profiles used by the camera to generate an RGB image.  You will find them on the camera Calibration tab (as suggested in the post above) and they have names like camera XXXXX, XXXXX is the same name as that used in the camera.  Select one with the same name XXXXX that you selected in the camera and you should get a much better game.  You can also change the default profile to the camera at one of them, as suggested in the post above, and then the RAW image will open the first time using this profile instead of the Adobe Standard profile.  If you always use the same profile in the camera, this will solve your problem.  If you use different profiles of the camera in the camera photo then you will need to manually change in Camera RAW and Lightroom to one corresponding used in the camera because the RAW converter does not read what profile you selected in the camera.

I just downloaded 13 items.  When I import a RAW image in the RAW dialog box, large red spots appear on the image, before you do anything.  I can't get rid of them, and restart the program has no effect.  I did not have this problem with 11 elements.  Thanks for any input.

You probably have the highlight clipping warning
