Re: Constant cut on Portege R500
Hey guys,.
Just bought a model Portege R500-124 (XP Pro) and I must say I'm in love! But I'm having real trouble trying to get my WiFi to stay connected to my home network...
It disconnects constantly, about once every minute and a half - and then decides to reconnect. Anyone have any idea why? I just can't understand it - I thought it might just be intrinsically problems with our network settings, but I don't think that's the question that we have three other workstations connected without difficulty.
This problem has existed since the first day (today is day 5/6) - and have resorted to another machine to ask this question!
What's funny is that sometimes, the connection is holds up to a few hours without any problem, but on the last day and a half, he refuses to hold the signal strength is excellent. and the location of the Portege at home, it's the same as my previous laptop - so I don't think it's a physical environmental problem...
Is that what the problem of ideas? Really appreciate it... I tried unplugging my router (Netgear); Download the latest Intel drivers for the wireless card, try to change the configuration of the network card detect N in order to detect all a, b and g that my router transmits only up to g.
Thanks in advance
PS
I tried the Toshiba diagnostics prog. and he spotted some problems when the connection suddenly drops - but as soon as he resumes himself that the diagnosis comes as clear - time between dc and the reconnection is 10 seconds or more! So whatever it can automatically display problems disappear and I can never read them in time...
Have you tried to update the driver WLan?
Check this box:

In addition, it might be desirable to update the BIOS
I read that this could help

Portege R500 - network Constant interruptions
I have a Portege R500 with Windows XP (SP3 now, but same problem with SP2 and same problem before and after all reinstall them), and the network continues to interrupt. It's desperately irritating, because I work a lot of ssh connections, and almost every time the connection breaks I lose some work. The best of cases, it's that I have to log in again and continue where I was.
This happens regardless of whether I use WIFI or wired network, and sometimes little matter where I am - home, office, coffee internet, that, is not my connection. The network is interrupted every 15-30 minutes, and sometimes as I type or loading a page, while other times it seems just to occur. It is usually easy to tell when it happens, because all the ssh connections instantly hang, all my messenger connections are broken and Outlook complains that he has lost the connection to the Exchange Server. The connections Outlook and messenger do not realize anything is wrong before the connection started actually working again, which has probably something to do with TCP or ICMP messages finally get through, but it's really strange that TCP is not only address the problem transparently - the physical connection is never interrupted for long.
I guess that it probably has something to do with energy saving, but I have been unable to resolve in setting energy saving settings. Also, I have the same problem, regardless of the question of whether the laptop is powered.
(Probably?) it is not a hardware failure, because I don't have the same problem in Ubuntu Linux and memtest does not report the errors of memory. (Speaking of which, is there a memory testing tool or self test tool integrated with this laptop?).
Any suggestion would be appreciated. I tried calling the number of local support twice, but it didn't help much to get there.
Thanks a lot for this great info

Portege R500-11Z: how to use the external mic and hear the internal speakers
We have a Portege R500-11Z running XP and want to use Skype with an external table microphone and the internal speakers.
When connect us the microphone to the Jack MIC the Portege, built-in speakers cut out!
How to use an external mic and still hear the internal speakers?
Hello
> When connect us the microphone on the Portege, built-in speaker MIC Jack cut!
Are you sure you used the microphone port and no headphone port?Have you checked your settings Audio from Skype?
There is an option called ring through the speaker too or something like that. Please also check the Realtek HD audio Manager in Control Panel.
There is a tab called Audio i/o.Usually, you can change the connector settings, by clicking on the small key-tool icon.
Disable the option called Mute rear output when plugged headphones beforeAs you can see is called headset and not so I m confused a little bit why the speakers are turned off when you connect an external microphone.
By the way; There is also a tab called micro.
Check if the two options that reduce the echo and noise are OFF -
Portege R500 and Toshiba optical Tilt-Wheel Mouse
Hello
I have a problem with my Portege R500 combined with my Toshiba optical Tilt-Wheel Mouse. I use Win XP Pro SP2.
When using the laptop will cut the mouse. If I plug the mouse into a different USB port, I can use the mouse for a while, but it does not stop.
Then the same problem, but a reconnection to another work of doesn´t of USB port.
I use the original Microsoft win xp driver.Hoody Bye
Have you received the special XP driver with this mouse?
If Yes, then install it.But to my knowledge it s common USB mouse that needs to use a plug n play
Then maybe you should check the USB settings.
Go to Device Manager and open the USB bus controller tree
Here, you must mark the unique USB root hubs and select Properties. In the Management tab to disable the function allow the computer to turn off this device
In addition I recommend upgrading the XP to the last State. I want to say that all fixes and patches must be installed!
Good luck

Hello!
I found my old laptop, but cannot start - forgotten BIOS password. Disconnect CMOS battery did not help.
Local support asked me to service offline, but they want too much money to unlock - this laptop is now less expensive itself.
Support of the USA asked me write here
May be someone can help generate answers unlock code?
Model is Portege R500 PPR50E-06W012RUProtection of the BIOS is a very important feature for protection, so it cannot be discussed in the public forum.
If someone writes here how you can remove the password BIOS all stolen Portege R500 can be unlocked.I know that it costs a bit, but this should be done by the authorized service provider.

Portege R500 - RAM and disk SSD upgrade
Hello
I have a PORTEGE R500 bought in 2007, SERIES NO.48025469H.
I have obvious problems with VISTA and WINDOWS 7. The two do not work well, because he seems to have a memory. I wonder if I can increase the memory and replace the drive with an SSD. I want to keep this laptop because it is perfect for all my needs.
Thank you

Hello
According to the specifications of the laptop your laptop can handle with GB of RAM, but has been bundled with 2 GB memory is not possible.
http://www.Toshiba.it/discontinued-p...Tege-R500-11z/What about SSD? SSD upgrade is possible and you can use 256GB SSD for upgrade. After this system will be much faster, and you will certainly more performance and speed.

Portege R500: Cannot restore Vista using Toshiba recovery disks
I downgraded Vista to XP loaded factory.
However, I would now like to restore back to Vista.I have disc 1 & 2 ' product Recovery DVD-Rom; Portege R500 disks.
They are also marked "Windows Vista Business (SSD/PATA)" has been provided by Toshiba.I don't know how to use these discs to restore my operating system to Windows Vista. When I insert disc 1 and after loading some files, a message "cannot read the file source or disk - Preinst2.SWM" and I can not go any further.
An instruction step by step would be greatly appreciated
I wonder why you receive two recovery disks. As far as I know Toshiba Vista Recovery image is stored on a DVD.
Perhaps you have received two CDIn any case, have you tried to boot from the second disk? I mean the second recovery CD?
Usually, recovery is not very sensitive. You must boot from the disc and should follow the instructions on the screen.
The error cannot read from the source file or disk - Preinst2.SWM looks like a little to the Conference on disarmament would not readable or the CD/DVD drive would not read the disc properly.

Portege R500 - low volume with Win 7 and Realtek driver
Hello
I have now installed Windows 7 on my R500 to prepare for the end of Windows XP to life.
I've experienced this now with Windows 7 sound does not really work.Build-in speaker does not work and a speaker connected to the outside with amplifier can get just a little sound in the maximum amplification I googled and saw many people having similar problems.
Does anyone know if Toshiba has a solution for this?
Other people with laptop computers Portege have the same problem?
Thank you
MarkusAFAIK the Portege R500 supports Realtek ALC262
I googled and found some people having problems with low sound volume on other laptops from other manufacturers using the piece ALC262But I found the solutions :)
Download the utility of small noise turn Mute Off after upgrade to Vista
[Its utility to turn Mute Off | http://support.toshiba.com/support/viewContentDetail?contentId=1671893&pf=true] and unzip it with WinRAR or WinZip
You will find a small file called "MuteOff". Run this file as an administrator and check if your sound would work.Note: All drivers should be installed as well as the Realtek audio driver.
Your comments would be appreciated

Portege R500: Card reader SD and ODD do not work - drivers needed
I have laptop portege R500, product number: PPR50E-04X04WCE.
last year, I changed the operating system and installed windows 7.
Since then, I can't use the dvd drive or the sd card reader.
And the control panel it apears two unknown devices, but I can´t find the controllers for these. What can I do to fix this?
I assume you found unknown devices in Device Manager.
Check it please http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/ann.jspa?annID=78
Here you can find instructions how to identify the unknown devices.I checked the Toshiba download under http://www.toshiba.eu/innovation/download_drivers_bios.jsp page and your Portege is listed there, but under the option ARCHIVE. It is supported for Win7 so there is no problem to install all the drivers available.
Check it out please and let us know if you still have the same problem.

Portege R500 - replacement of the keyboard - success
After buying a new keyboard for the R500 on EBay about a year ago, I finally blew the courage to replace a badly scratched by a new keyboard. The reason I've waited? I was worried about how to get out the old keyboard (it is locked down to the chassis, and it was obvious that I have would hurt one during the withdrawal.
There is a nice write-up general on how to disassemble a R500 here:
http://www.irisvista.com/tech/laptops/Toshiba-Portege-R500/disassemble-laptop-remove-hard-drive.htmThe description above is not to discuss the keyboard however, so here's some additional information and tips:
* Read this whole procedure before you start - it's simple, but not for the faint of heart.
* Shut down, unplug the power, remove the battery.
* Make sure that you have the correct keyboard for your model. The US keyboard is p/n G83C000903US for example. One I removed was a Rev 1 and a new one, I had a Rev 2 (don't know the difference - they look identical). They can get as low as $40-mais check the part number before you buy.
* The keyboard connector is located under the computer, and so you will have to take off from the bottom, carefully following the instructions in the link above.
A couple of notes: (a) the cable Ribbon PCMCIA connector must be opened to disconnect the cable, as this is the only thing that prevents you from removing the bottom of the computer. You can easily do so through access memory on the back door, but BE careful not to damage the cable lock. It works by switch to the top the little plastic lever that is held in place by small pieces of plastic on the sides of the connector that flex * a little *. Be gentle with this connector. When you put it back later-connector, if you placed the cable all the way into the connector, you can lock with only slight pressure down on the connector, and it will snap into place.
(b) there are other types of cable Ribbon connectors use too. For example, to unlock the keyboard connector, now visible also on the bottom of the deck, slide both ends of the connector in the direction where the cable plugs in. They are snug and will only move about 1/4 ", be gentle but firm.
(c) the two tiny connectors blocks free access to the water of the keyboard do not have locks on them. We're a band with only a few drivers, and one is a red and white power connector. Just pull out them. All the other connectors, you will probably miss through requires unlocking, so be careful!
_Now back to the keyboard: _
Once you have managed to disconnect his cable on the bottom, turn the laptop and start to remove the keyboard on the edges. It is supported by many small pieces of sticky tape, 2 faces, and that's it. As the base of the keyboard is made of aluminum, it is likely that you will distort the keyboard a bit as release you it, even though it may be downplayed maybe using a tool like a rule or something plastic and pry with it. Take care of not to damage the connector of the Ribbon and try to ignore these scary cracking sounds that identify each section!
Once you have turned it off, you must remove any excess tape before starting point and again put a bunch of small pieces of new, good quality 2-sided tape (such as 3 m). No need to use anything stronger or thicker - just put a bunch of parts everywhere on the base, especially near the edges and the space key.
Now, finally, turn the keyboard in position, making sure that you screw the connector back Ribbon through to the correct place. Turn the laptop over and re - insert and lock the Ribbon connector (make sure that it is directly and fully forward lock connector). All other connectors back in too. Then come back and push down hard on all sections.
Re-assembling, taking care to put the 4 mm and 6 mm screws in the right places and a tiny on the side.
Cross your fingers and turn it on!
Good luck!
Thank mate for this review.
Generally the replacement of keyboard is not really complicated and someone with small technician skills should be able to replace it -
Portege R500-S5001X will not start
My Portege R500 arrested last night when displaying "my pictures" and I was not able to do restart upward.
I removed the battery and turn the direct power, but when I power on I get the Toshiba with "Intel" page in the lower right and five icons feature lower downtown.
It will not boot to Windows, I know I should know, but I "think" it works under XP.
I have no recovery disks, he passed to us my father in law a few years ago and no supported drives has come that I can find.

TimHey,.
Can you please verify certain things?
You can start in safe mode? After you have powered on the notebook press key F8 to access the Windows Advanced Boot menu and select mode.
If you cannot access the t Windows Advanced Boot menu, you must check the BIOS if the HARD drive is recognized correctly.

Portege R500 - Bad optical drive delays the start - how to fix?
The Portege R500 has recently begun does not start. Initially there not some time later, frequently. By chance, I discovered that if I left alone for a minute or two, he will continue to start. That and the noise coming from the optical driver, made me suspect the problem was not with the HARD drive, as I feared at first, but with the optical driver.
I read in the thread below that other people had this problem. MrBear mentions * I pulled it out again and pushed on the Ribbon connecting the CD-ROM to make sure they were safe. Turned on again and he pulled up without problem! *
Link: [http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=43300&tstart=0]
Could someone clarify in what ribbons must be treated? Only those who are visible by opening the drive? Or it is necessary to open the notebook?
Furthermore, if I booted into Windows, it stopped again, for a minute or two, while Windows is loading. With Ubuntu, there is no such problem. Perhaps Windows tries to communicate with the optical driver for some reason any.
Tnaks for any help!
LeonardoHello!
Is your laptop still under warranty? If so I put t understand why you try to solve the problem by yourself. Go to the nearest EPA and ask a technician for help. These guys are very useful and they have the most experience on laptop repairs.
On the Toshiba site, you can search the nearest ASP:
