  I had a personal experience of this problem on different computers. In my case, there were two separate causes:

  1. an anti-virus software has been dealing with the iPod as a removable disk and it analysis when it is connected. For analysis full on several GB of data, this took time and gave the appearance of being locked up. I cured it by changing the settings of antivirus software for the analysis of removable drives always scan for analysis information.

  2. the USB ports on the computer would cause the iPod & computer crash & block. When it is connected to a powered USB hub external network, this problem never happened. I suspect therefore that equipped ports USB computer were unable to provide sufficient power.

  The foregoing may or may not solve your problem. If this isn't the case, follow the advice of Bill.
