Re: Linux on Satellite M70-181 - recommendations?

Hello

as Windows XP support will end next April and my old Satellite still works
I wonder if anyone has any experience with Linus on this type of laptop.

Are there recommendations regarding verson (Ubuntu, SUSE, Debian,...).

Are there drivers available? (impossible to find anything on the Toshiba site).
Thank you

Hello

This question should probably be divided into 2 sections.

(1) stability and security.
It's always a good idea to stick to a branch that is stable and continue to release updates for the given distribution.

Look at Debian or RedHat (CentOS is a free 'clone' of RedHat).
Debian and RedHat (CentOS) support their distributions of life or a long time (RedHat) or via a rolling update mechanism (Debian) release.

(2) performance
Having a unit of the old school as the M70 really forces you to look at what desktop environment you should look.

You must avoid KDE4, Gnome3, cinnamon and Unity (specific to Ubuntu). They all look nice and have fancy features but will be (too) heavy load for your old unit to carry.
Search for rather Mate, LXDE, office environments focused on XFCE for a balanced experience.
If you want to go for a very lean office there are a number of choices such as Openbox and other similar environments.

So to sum up - the choice of the distribution is not very easy because it is a decision (at least) 2-step.
Security/stabilty and choice of desktop environment where the last of them will have the most impact on the memory footprint and processor.

Here's a place to start looking for your desktop of choice:

http://en.Wikipedia.org/wiki/Desktop_environment

This is a very good site for verification of distributions:

  • Satellite M70-181 to perform the recovery of proceeds of DVD USB drive

    Hello

I am trying to recreate the image on my Satellite M70 181 using the product recovery DVD.
Should be easy, you might say, but the internal DVD player no longer works.
I don't want to buy a new laptop this quite old, so I borrowed an external USB drive.

After that I inserted the product recovery DVD the notebook starts from there, autoexec creates a RAMDRIVE and copy the files from there.
"Recover.bat", the external DVD player analysis must be accessible via the X: drive. However, there are has some missing files on the DVD to mount the external DVD drive: there is no file % RAMDRV%\TOOLS\USB20. DEV, nor a file % RAMDRV%\TOOLS\USB11. DEV.
Failure of the attempt to mount the external hard drive, recover.bat starts a loop saying 'Please insert Recovery CD #1!'.

What can I do now? Help, please.

    Thanks in advance

    Hello

As much I know this model of laptop can't boot from USB CD/DVD drive and CD recovery.
You can boot from the USB FDD drive and a bootable floppy drive but I doubt that this is not possible with a Toshiba restore disk.

I think that you could use this recovery disk as part of internal ODD.

  • Satellite M70-181 - cannot see the wireless network

    Hello

I reinstalled the entire system (Windows XP) and now system did not see the network wireless at all. How can I install it and put it back?

    Laptop Satellite M70-181.

    Thank you.

    Hello!

Have you installed all the drivers for your laptop and also the network wireless driver? You can find all the drivers on the Toshiba site.
Check for yellow exclamation marks Device Manager.

Here in the forum, you can find 100 or discussions on the wireless LAN using.. Please search for it.
Use of WLAN you should check the TCP/IP (DHCP or IP) WLAN card settings and you should use the same standard WLAN (e.g. 802. 11b) as on the router. Then, you should see the router and if you know the password, however, you can connect.
If you can find t the router, disconnect it from the AC/DC adapter for 5 minutes and then plug it in again.

  • Need old Bios for Satellite M70 181

Everyone knowes where I can get old Versions of BIOS (operating system independent) for my Satellite M70 - 181 (PSM70)?
Look for the Version 1, 00 - WIN or 1 10-WIN-in the new BIOS, there is no need for cooler adjust :(

    Hello

    > Does anyone know where I can get old Versions of BIOS (operating system independent) for my Satellite M70 - 181 (PSM70)?
I m afraid you won't find older BIOS versions for download on the pages of Toshiba I have found that the latest versions of BIOS.

If you want you could contact the partner of service allowed in your country and ask if it of possible to get older versions of BIOS

But look, man. I doubt that an older BIOS would support or contains a few additional options or settings that are not available in the latest BIOS.

  • Re: Win 8 on Satellite M70 - 181 - are there drivers available?

    Hello

as Windows XP support will end next April and my old Satellite still works I
wonder if anyone has any experience with Win8 on this type of laptop.

Are there drivers available? (impossible to find anything on the Toshiba site).

    Thank you

All drivers for Satellite M70 series are on the Toshiba UE driver page.
Since it is old model of laptop, drivers are placed in archive, then you should choose type of product-> Archive

But it seems that the drivers are available only for Windows XP and Vista

  • Satellite M70 - 181 - slider and escape key does not

FN with F10 keys shows no reaction.
    Check all the drivers.
But cursor and escape keys does not.

As far as I know, FN + F10 or FN + F11 active integrated keyboard and cursor control keys.

Satellite M70 is a fairly old machine and I do not remember which driver may be responsible for this control. Try to reinstall the Toshiba Accessibility or FN-esse utility. Maybe this will help.

I had M70 long ago, but I've never used this option.

But even if there are no Windows 7 drivers, you could install Windows 7 laptop computer s hardware specifications are good enough to run Windows 7 on this device.
You need to find the key to your own hand drivers. Many laptops are released with the same pieces of equipment, so probably the drivers released for other cell phones would be compatible with the M70 series.

If yes then disable this feature with the FN + F10 or + F11 key combination

  • Linux and satellite M70

It's just to prevent anyone who is interested posted...

I managed to get linux (stable) to work on the M70. I used Mandriva 2006. Sound, LAN, wireless LAN all seem to work well. The only problem with the graphics - it runs in 1024 x 768 with no support to opnGL.

It would be nice if he had run at its native resolution of 1280 x 800 but im having trouble getting the correct synchronization (refresh vertical horizontalm) for display.

If anyone has any info on this please let me know.

    Asif

    Hello Asif

This is great news for many users who want to install Linux on their units. I hope that you will also fix the problem with the graphics. Have you tried to find somewhere driver for graphics card? I'm not 100% sure, but it must be an Intel, one.

  • Satellite M70-181 - symbols flicker

    Hello

at the start of Satellite M there is a warning signal/voyeurism that I can't define. If I press the pause button it goes to start windows XP - but after all the symbols on the desktop start flickering.

There is no way to continue.
Please, I beg you - is that someone could help me?

    Hello

The description of your problem is not easy to understand.
Can you start OS on a regular basis?
What happens when you press the button walk / stop?
You can boot OS in SafeMode (F8 at startup)?

    That mean flickering symbols?

  • Satellite M70-181: no photo with Beamer liked

    Hi people!

I have a problem with my M70 Sat with integrated graphics card intel. BIOS and drivers are up to date.

I want to connect to an older SONY projector (5 years) with a regular vga cable to the external VGA port of my toshiba. However, the VGA port seems not to be active and there is no picture on the projector. FN + F5 shows only the internal LCD screen. Reset with a connected projector is not solve this problem.

It seems that the graphics card does not recognize the beamer (I guess that's not compatible DCC) and so is not active the vga port. So I think I need to force the graphics card to activate it. Does anyone know how I could do this.
    Or am I totally wrong?

    Bye,.

  • Satellite M70-181 and ODD external

My doesn´t DVD player work more, I want to buy an external drive, it's cheaper and better for me, but I think that it work with the old bios doesn´t. I can't set usb boot.

I have found a new version of the bios from 2009, with this version, it is possible to start with an external dvd drive?

    Yours sincerely

    Jochen

    >... but I think that it work with the old bios doesn´t
If you use external ODD with the operating system running, it will work perfectly. You can use firewire or USB port and it wil work properly but if you ned as boot device this can be problematic.
This old model of laptop is not designed for this purpose and there is nothing you can do about it.
Latest version of BIOS for this old book is already online and the BIOS update will not change anything.

Sorry, but the best option for you is to buy internal ODD on eBay. Exchange and be happy.

  • Satellite M70-181: the wifi does not work

    Hello

I'm in New Zealand at the moment and a fortnight ago, I changed my bios password but forgot it. To solve this problem I send the laptop to Toshiba in Christchurch and they reset for me. But since that day my wireless does not work. When I turn it on not even the light. Is not in one of the normal places (like in the network environment or how ever you call it).
Would it be a problem with the hardware, and it is easy to fix by cause me I didn't have the waiting time until they do it again in Christchurch.

    Thanks for all the answers

They could have damaged antenna card wifi inside your computer. If you have technical skills, you can fix it yourself, but if you don't just send the laptop back and let check them again.

  • Satellite M70 - down keyboard when the HARD drive gets hot

My Satellite M70-181 begins typing "t" series when you reach the working temperature. In my case, if the HARD disk exceeds a temperature of 48-50 ° C (speedfan).
I replaced the original Travelstar with a new HDD Samsung, but it becomes so hot that precedes it and the blackout keyboard still appears.
Because the processor is idle most of the time, the fan is too slow. But the fan doesn't seem to affect the temperature of the HARD drive in any case.
Any ideas anyone? (Sorry for this kind of English...)

    Frank

    Hello

Have you noticed this problem with keyboard only when the temperature is raised to a higher level?

To be honest, I have never experience this problem and I can't believe that a higher temperature of HARD drive could affect the functionality of keyboard

However, maybe you should clean the grids and the cooling fans. The notebooks are clogged with dust and don t cooling modules work properly.
Use a jet of compressed air which should help to remove dust, I think this should help to reduce the internal temperature.

  • Satellite U200-181. Slow touchpad on Linux

I use two operating systems on my Toshiba Satellite U200-181.

They are: MS Windows XP Home and Debian GNU Linux (stable) Etch.

MS Windows XP, the touchpad features work very well, but there are problems under Linux:
-cursor moves very slowly when I move my finger on the touchpad surface. Acceleration of speed of Changind pointer in the mouse preferences dialog does nothing (I use Gnome 2 desktop environment).
-by typing on the touchpad surface is emule not left button pressing as it does under MS Windows.

Can someone help me configure the touchpad so that it works under Linux than under MS Windows.
