  As you probably know Toshiba doesn't support Linux and you will be lucky if someone here would be able to offer assistance.
  I recommend to visit some Linux forum and ask there. The Forum of Linux you have better chance of assistance with that.

  From my own experience, I can say that all the FN buttons work perfectly after hibernation, standby, restart, etc.. No problem at all!

  I just tried this and IT WORKED! I don't know how much luck you'll have, but try the Fn key and pressing the up and down arrows while your computer starts. It worked for me. For my Inspiron 1420, I adjusted the brightness, while he was when the screen went black and the words "Microsoft Corporation" above and the Green loading bar going across the screen.   I update my windows 8 to 8.1 after doing so, my laptop cannot adjust brightness however, other buttons as increase/function work correctly. How to fix this thing? I am very grateful to someone will help me here. ^_^
