  • Thunderbird will not send or receive messages from my Yahoo account more. Tried all the usual change password stuff. Help please.l

Thunderbird has been very well for a few years. On occasion, he would give me the message "failed to open a session" and I just hit "Try Again" and everything was fine. Suddenly, all is not well and I can't do is resolved. Tried to delete and to have to retype (PW is OK) but nothing seems to work. Help, please.

To diagnose problems with Thunderbird, try one of the following:

    • Restart Thunderbird with disabled modules (Thunderbird Safe Mode). On the Help menu, click "restart with disabled modules. If Thunderbird works as usual, there is an add-on or theme interfere with normal operations. You will need to reactivate the modules one at a time until you locate the offender.
    • Restart the operating system in safe mode with network. This loads only the basics needed to start your computer while allowing Internet access. Click on your operating system for instructions on how to start in safe mode: Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, OSX
If the safe mode for the operating system to resolve the problem, there are other software on your computer that is causing problems. The possibilities include but not limited to: AV scanning, virus/malware, background downloads such as updates of the program.
  • Phone scam received call from a technician who said my system was infected

I am gullible who maybe went too far with the Indian phone call. As I was using my laptop at the time, it was too easy to believe.
Although I was getting suspicious, I actually entered a code provided by the appellant, to allow the "technician" to advise by online chat. Then I stopped. I'm afraid that may have infected my XP Pro system. I have temporarily restored the system to a date before the call. Is that enough, or should I re install XP from scratch? Also, what is the risk of my main computer, running 7 and not in use at the time being affected?
What other corrective measures should I take?
What precautions should I take with respect to online banking?
    Any advice greatly appreciated.

When I disabled Java and upgraded all the State of plug-in, made Firefox MSN my homepage and I wanted Yahoo. Now the message to my Yahoo home page keeps coming back when well even Yahoo is now in a State of the home page.

The "Internet settings" in the control panel are just for Internet Explorer, so that you can put those aside for the moment. To check and change the home page of Firefox, you can use the page Options, as described in this article: start-up, homepage, tabs and download settings.

Where do you see this message? If it's on Yahoo itself, you can ignore it or click ignore. Sites have no idea of your current home page, because web pages are not allowed to read the settings of your browser. In general they just continually make themselves known, and if tell you them to be quiet, they remember that setting a cookie.

  • Received a phone call from someone who said he could help me because his company had received the error messages from my computer - XINFINITY?

So I recently received calls from this guy who claims to be with Microsoft Error Reporting service, but I thought something was fishy when he couldn't tell me anything specific on my computer, which he would be able to know right away. Also, he couldn't speak a lick of English, which makes it really difficult to understand what he wanted originally.
He told me that he and his 'business' received my computer error messages, and that we should "follow the simple steps to get rid of these problems.
He told me to go to the computer management console and find the 'filter' in the display options, but being an avid user of XP, I know there is no such thing.
He then told me that it is an effect of a virus that "we need to follow the steps to get rid of. He directed me to the console to Run and had me type in this web address:
So now, things get sketchy. A free host for a supposedly serious company? I do NOT.
(Why he wanted me to use RUN to access a Web site, I have no idea, only adds to the superficiality...)
I went on the site, which lo & behold, very professional. There are four links to download files .exe with weird as names:
    -' Ammyy v3"(AA_v3.exe)
    -' Ammyy v2"(AA_v2.exe)
    -"Croosloop" (CroosLoopSetup.exe)
    - and 'ShowMyPc"(ShowMyPC3105.exe)

He said click on the first and hit. He said SAVE or CANCEL. Now, I'm not naïve or stupid or gullible, and I am computer illiterate.
I smell something fishy here. Technical support does not call you about errors, you call them.
Research in the comments left on their FREE site, I have seen that all FOUR were short and had similar spelling/grammar mistakes. Typical supported false reputation.
I did a google search, barely found anything on this "business" and the guy hung up.
This is the site that this guy directed me to: http://xinfinitytech.webs.com/quick-help/
IM asking for any information about whether if it's a scam, an attempted theft of identity/data theft, an attempt to spread of the most recent virus, or some guy who tries to help. My gut tells me that it is one of the top three.
ANY INFORMATION WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!

Yes, it is a complete and utter scam.  Assuming that you don't give them access to your computer, you're probably pretty course.  They are the so-called "canvassing" - selection of lists of random phone numbers and try to sell services and/or access to your computer.  You did the right thing, hang up on them.
