(Redirected) Physical disk following failed - what?

One of our willing R710 of a disk being reported as "impossible" there there something that must be done before she Exchange? Here is a brief summary of our configuration:

  • PERC 6 / i controller
  • Disks configured in RAID 5 with hot spare hot spare has been implemented over the weekend.
  • Firmware version - 6.2.0 - 0013
  • Driver version - 4.05.01.64
  • Version of the Storport driver - 6.1.7601.17577

It is a production server, so everything what to do may not be disruptive, or I'll have to wait for s/n.

Thank you in advance for any help you can offer.

  • Startup disk has failed - what are the options for replacement

I have a Dimension 8400 BIOS A05 running (if I can remember you corrrectly). The SATA C drive supplied with the system crashed recently and will no longer start up. I tried various diags, but they all fail. I also had a USB drive adapter to try to access the drive from another computer... the disc turns, but I do not see the drive.

I want to know what constraints and options are there in the choice of a replacement drive? (I wonder if I am limited on ability. The original drive is a WD740GD-75FLA1 (74 GB). Could I replace it with a SATA capacity more (I don't mind if the replacement is a WD drive again or not.)

And, keeping in mind the BIOS, I must update that when I replace the HARD drive?

In addition, this good old machine still runs XP SP3 and I plan to switch to Win 7 at the time of the installation of the new disc. Points to consider regarding the choice of the player?

BTW - some time after the purchase of this PCI added a second drive hard - one 250 GB SATA drive. Do I need considered as in the choice of the total capacity of the disk online, I will be once the new drive arrives? Oh, and although I don't speak of this second disc - it works fine with the USB adapter so my problem looks like most likely to be a disk problem rather than say, a question of power cable or block.

Thanks in advance for your comments.

    Andy

Any standard desktop SATA drive under 2 t fine - having said that, what you have now is a WD Raptor 10 K RPM drive.   They are now called Velociraptor - if you are looking for this level of performance of the player, they are the only SATA 10 K rpm disks designed to use desktop.

The official version said that WS allows only virtual up to 8 TB of disk.

According to my own tests, it only limits the size of the VMDK for 'New - VM' Assistant.
Once you have a greater vmdk - just tried a vmdk 10TB - WS won't complain about the size.
I don't expect that WS will prevent the physical disks to use inside a virtual machine that is already configured.
So in your case I think you started WS with a normal user account.
Try to start as administrator WS - maybe even using the administrator account.
I think that then it will work.
Unfortunately, the error messages produced by vmware.exe are not really accurate-, so there is no way to know if you really have a bad super block.
To test if this is really the problem and not just an error message - poor try to mount the drive directly.
Please post the vmdk - want to know if there is something unusual about 5.5 TB in the disk.

  • MD3000i individual physical disk - gradient path

Recently, we have replaced a failing in our MD3000i HARD drive. After letting it rebuild, all the disks are again in an optimal state. But the recovery guru still gives this error:

Individual physical disk - gradient path
    Gradient of physical disk paths:
    Channel: 0
    Physical disks: (unknown)

Can I support safely on "Check again", or what would be the procedure I should follow to get rid of this error?

    Hello Diss,

Since you say that when you look in MDSM all readers are also optimal then you should be able to do a recheck out the recovery guru & have it checked to confirm that all the drives are online & optimal.  If after you run the recheck if the cottage no matter what drive as still having problems, then what I would do is to recheck MDSM & confirm that the drive displayed as failed.  The error normally clears once a car has been replaced but in some cases I see need to run check again to clear the error recovery guru.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

  • 12.04.01 Ubuntu x 86-putting in place a virtual Windows XP machine to access the physical disk

    Dear community,

I'm new to VMware Workstation, but progressed in computer science.

At first, I want to give you a brief introduction of my system and my goal.

HP ProBook 6550 b (System with Intel Core i5 processor Intel-based)

The HARD drive access mode: S - ATA AHCI

    Operating systems: Windows 7, Ubuntu 12.04 x 86, Ubuntu 12.04 x 64

    Boot Manager: GRUB2

VMware Workstation (trial period) to 9.01 Linux x 86

Goal: install MS Windows XP Professional with physical disk access several partitions on the hard drive local

The installation of VMware Workstation 9.01 on my system Ubuntu 12.04 x 86 worked perfectly, without any error. Large.

I was able to set up and run a Windows XP VM standard by creating a new virtual disk , following the Nice Wizard.

It was just to test, but just after I tried to configure the same OS as a virtual machine using a physical disk (for advanced users) to directly access a local hard drive.

Also, I selected "BusLogic (recommended)" on the choice of type of I/O controller.

As a device, I chose the HARD internal laptop drive and used two individual partitions (the real partitions on my HARD drive I wanted access within the virtual machine).

These partitions have been preformatted with NTFS (and not have been mounted in my Ubuntu).

However, I was not sure if Windows XP has been will be installed on one of these partitions.

The turn on/off the virtual machine to install the OS, I got the message following (msg1):

"You are using a SCSI drive. Performance of dual-boot SCSI physical drives are poor. The installed operating system could not start correctly in the virtual machine. However, the physical SCSI disks work normally so exclusively in the virtual machine. »

Just after the message following (msg2):

"If you dual-boot a native Windows installation, problems can occur when attempting to start your system in VMware Workstation." For more information, see "http://vmware.com/info?id=128". "
Click OK to continue, Cancel to power off.

    And finally this (msg3):

«An error has occurred causing a virtual CPU go into the stop State.» If this anomaly had occurred outside of a virtual machine, it would have caused the physical machine restart. The stop State are accessible by properly configuring the virtual machine, a bug in the guest operating system or a problem in VMware Workstation.
Click OK to restart the virtual machine or Cancel to turn off the virtual machine. »

I cannot explain the last error message and don't know what to do.

After specifying msg2, I found information about possible problems in dual-boot environments, caused by different drivers for the IDE controller.

So I tried to change the access mode to S - ATA AHCI HARD drive to S - ATA IDE in the BIOS to solve the problem.

Unfortunately, I have had no success on this operation, because the error message appeared again, once I restarted the VM.

Sorry, but I have no idea what goes wrong.

In fact, I don't know what VMware workstation wants to do, when you install the system on a disc/physical partition to have direct access to the local hard disk.

Because I don't see even the first screen of Windows Setup, there must be something wrong.

Underlying product system issues and if it's a primary or logical partition?

    Need a complete unformated HDD?

Only selected partitions are accessible within the virtual machine?

Is the system installed itself on the selected partitions?

Maybe some experienced users can help.

    Your help is welcome!

    Thank you.

    stanni

First I use a raw disk to install Windows XP from a virtual machine, but if I had an existing installation, I would add the partition as a raw to be executed with a VM disk.

Here's what I'd do...  Install Windows XP to a normal file based virtual machine, and then add a second disk as a raw disk with the partitions you want to join.  That's assuming that you really need not where what to start Windows XP natively and the physical partitions that access are used for data.  Also if need be add the raw disk as IDE.

  • Degraded physical disk channel MD3000i

I get this error on my MD3000i we have a connected to the MD1000. All discs show optimal, but disk channel 1 shows optimal disk channel 2 shows degraded.

Here a technician Dell here I can send zip support for?

    Hello grendels_Arm,

What I would do, is to clear the statistics of physical disk channel. Here are the commands that must be run:

    SMcli n Pei password - c "clear stats allPhysicalDiskChannels;

    SMcli n Pei password - c "set physicalDiskChannel State [0] = optimal;

    SMcli n Pei password - c "set the status of physicalDiskChannel [1] = optimal;

If you still get the error after erasing all channel statistics, then we need to look a your MD3000i support beam to see what the cause of the error still occur.

  • T310 degraded virtual disk, all physical disks 'online '.

It is a PowerEdge T310 server. Physical disk 0:0:3 showed physical way errors in the past, but after reinstalling the drive, everything was going well for a while. Now Dell OM reports that the virtual disk is degraded, but all four disks are online reports and have this green check mark by them.

Nothing shows expected failure and I don't see any disk medium error, the firmware is up to date - is their something I don't see as to why my virtual drive would fail? I think there is always a problem with PD 0:0:3 even though she does not appear in the newspapers. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

  • Expand a virtual disk with new physical disks?

    Hello people,

Pleas in law not to shoot me to ask what I fear it may have already answered somewhere and my research is poor and as still not turned up the answer.

I'm relatively new to VMware, previous job was especially MS Hyper-V and is always to some extent.

Hower to the point in question, I have a single host (VMware ESXi 5.0.0) with a single server VMware 2008R2 on her guest and the C: drive is quickly running out of space. The existing, aligned hard disk virtual hard disk has 10 GB free to extend the ramdisk with.

Therefore, my thoughts are I might add an another one or two new physical disks and add them to the data store that is aligned with the virtual C:\drive to the comment server, I would then be able to extend the exisitng C:\ virtual hard disk with the new ability to drive two new physical drives added?

Hope this sense makses, hoing it's okay and I get out of jail!

    Thank you very much

    Graeme

    Hello

Please see this link because it deals with the procedure to enlarge a vmdk and extend partition in comments

First enlarge the data store after the addition of physical drives. Select the data store, properties, increase and the LUN detected.

Then use the vmkfstools as explained in the video to develop

  • 6 - physical disk space - where she went from ESXi

I use products VMWare 10 years and more, most of this being VMWare Workstation.  On my laptop (500G HD), I currently have about a dozen virtual machines of the 2012 to Windows XP for testing server.  I also have dozens of snapshots.  If I look at my physical disk used space, the foregoing takes 330G of space.

I decided to buy a dedicated device and create an ESXi environment that more closely reproduce my customer environments.  I have a HD 500G with 16G memory on an i7 platform.  I downloaded the iso of ESXi, created a bootable USB key and installed.  Connected with vSpere Client and started installing VMWare customers.  After my 6th VMWare guest, I had 65G of free space left.  I installed the following

    4 Server HD 2012-60G each

    1 Windows 8-40G

    1 Windwos 7 = - 40G

Even if all the virtual HD prealloue were (I don't believe that they are), the foregoing would be only = 320 G.

If I look at vSpere, it says that I have a capacity of 458G with only 65G left.

Thus, the question, it seems that its allocation of space for HD and with fees generals, I can see where the above figures comes, but is one of the benefits of virtualization to share the resources.  It is a framework in ESXi that does NOT allocate all the space when you create a virtual guest.

When you work with work stations, it will create the files on disc as a provisioning. The default value in vSphere is to create disk thick available zero lazy. It will allocate all the space of the disk if you don't have a disk VAAI system api. When you create environments on your computer and ESXi is installed make sure you thin when, available when setting up servers or it will fill up fast.

You will be able to choose the layout thin when you select the size of the disk when you create virtual machines in ESXi. There are 3 options thick available zero lazy, thick available zero willing and thin provision.

  • VMware Vista support physical disk device does not not for some VM.

I handle Win2k8 64 bit vm on esx5.5 Update 2 which are evidence of "Disk of Vista VMware help" have the error "this device is not present, is not working properly or is not all its drivers installed." (Code 24) ». Versions of VMware Tools vary, either 9.4.0 9.4.5 build-1585188, build-1598834 or 9.4.10 build-2068191.

Google missed most of the time. I can't find any information on what concrete this virtual device is or what it does in particular, except that it may be involved in the creation of snapshots suspended.

In addition, the device seems to be attached to the vmrawdsk service, which does not exist on the server. These virtual machines were not P2V, they have been created since iso win.

One guess what it is and how I might be able to fix it?

I got it on a working server my copy on the file vmrawdsk.sys missing a server well-known, uninstall VMware Tools, restart, reinstall it and restart again. Then the VMware Vista support physical disk device / service vmrawdisk are working normally.
