Remove an iSCSI Datastore VMFS

We are currently migrating to NFS over iSCSI and while doing some tests, I deleted a vmfs ISCSI using the VIC data store. When I went to add to the data store to the esx server, he said the volume was empty. If you do this with NFS, you can mount the volume again as it does not destroy the volume.

My question is what happens if you want to remove the data store because you no longer want on ESX01, but you always want on ESX02. The volume will be destroyed and therfore ESX02 will not see this volume?

Another question I have is what happens if I have an ESX machine that created the data store, then on another computer ESX try adding the same data store. The data store appears as empty when you try to create the volume on the second machine?

Thank you

So would do you by deleting the IP address of the esx of its list on the target server and then re-scan?

Yes, but réanalysant does that with iscsi HBAs (even here the deletion of the target may be necessary); with software disable it, kill, and activation of the initiator iscsi is required (commands on the console) - or you restart your Esx host.

  • Appropriate measures to remove LUN/iSCSI target?

Hi guys, I'm under ESXi 5 and must remove some iSCSI LUN from a couple of hosts.  My first inclination was to just delete the target side SAN and then rescan.  But I thought I remembered reading somewhere that I should "detach" the LUN from the host first?  So I thought that maybe I should ask.

Second question in the same sense, if I delete a full pathname, do I have everything just to delete the IP address in the 'Discovery' tabs, then rescan?  Thank you kindly.

I'm trying to format a LUN with the VMFS.  What is the path necessary to control New-Datastore-vmfs?  I thought it might be/vmfs/devices/disks/naa..., but that seems to fail every time.

The path must point to the canonical name of the LUN.

  • Removed from the Local VMFS Datastore, now can't recreate!

The local disk is displayed in the details under storage adapters window, but no disk space is displayed in the add storage wizard. This continues after a reboot.

    Any ideas?

Connect directly to the host and re - add storage, not do it through Virtual CEnter and you should be fine.

This has been documented as a "feature" a little before.

  • Cannot add iSCSI Datastore

    The problem:

When you add a new data store, I am able to see all the LUNS that I am about to add. When I add the storage, I receive errors that the object reference is not valid, and the operation fails

The events that led to this problem:

This iSCSI storage is off-production... I'm experimenting with VDR (really cool btw, I look forward future versions). As it's storage without importance, when I decided to make some radical changes to the storage, I have simply entered in the SAN and said that it is set at the factory. I made no changes to the vCenter or ESX storage configurations.

    Other information:

-When you add the data store via the "Add Storage" of the vSphere Client Wizard, the first issue of logic unit in my new volume shows as having a label «VDR (head)» VMFS Yes, the old data store that I didn't not remove properly called VDR.

-The LUNS in the SAN have been removed, and the new LUNS have been created.

Anyone has any ideas on where to start? For me, the logical place to start looking is where defunct VDR data store data takes place, so that I can clean that information... I don't know where that would be.

  • Removed VMFS3 iSCSI target volume - I'm screwed?

Hello. I "tried" to move virtual machines between servers and the San. On a single server, ESXi 3.5, I 'got' a VMFS volume on a target iSCSI on a basic SAN device.

The volume "was" listed in the configuration of the server/storage tab. I removed thinking it would be just to delete the reference to the volume from the point of view of the host, but he seems to have deleted the iSCSI target volume.

Is this correct - is my missing volume? If I'm screwed? Is there anyway to recover the volume?

Any help or advice would be really appreciated. Thanks in advance.

  • iSCSI datastore - no action listed?

    Hi all

I don't know if it's a problem or worry about.  I have 2 datastore iSCSI connected to 4 host ESX 3.5 U3. The data store original watch information when I select the store data and properties it will list the extent and the information on the measure, but the other data store which is a new data store that was created it does not show extend them or information, when I go into the properties of the data store.  But the new data store is formatted as vmfs 3.31 and I could svmotion all our VMs above it and everything seems to work.  My questions is this normal to have no information of measurement for a data store and still work?

  • Cannot remove dumpfile created volume vmfs - 5.5

I have a 5.5 with only local storage server I recently upgraded to 5.1.

A few days ago I had inventoried all my VM folders on the next partition:

    / vmfs/volumes/comments.

Today, when cleaning latest virtual machines, I find the following:

    /vmfs/volumes/guest/vmkdump/44454C4C-4400-1048-805A-C7C04F4C4631.dumpfile

I don't know what created this... I understand there dumpfiles that can be created on PSODs, but I can't find any reference to a real folder called "vmkdump."

When I try to delete it, I get the following:

If the NIC information above seem to be a loophole... and the owner of the directory in question seems to be simply the volume itself (?)

I'm worried because not only I want to remove this file from my store of data (or at least understand the need for it), but because of the small cryptic information that I can see so far I don't think that sounds a coredump is / was being created.

To the best of my knowledge, this system has no other problems, it starts very well and apart from some other errors not apparent, miners, I saw in newspapers, I know not what could be the cause.

Advice is very welcome as to what is happening!

Yes NightWing... the coredump file is 5.5

Size of the system increases lead to larger ESXi unannounced dumps core. The partition of coredump for new installations of ESXi 5.5 is 2.5 GB. For upgrades from previous versions of ESXi 5.5, the core dump partition is limited to 100 MB for ESXi crashes. For many large systems, this limit is not enough space and dump logs are truncated. The limit has an impact on the ability of triage ESXi system issues and the core.

Updates with limits on partitions of 100 MB, during the boot process, the system might create a dump file. If it does not create a dump file, you can create it manually with the command of file coredump esxcli system.

The partition which added isn't the vmfs partition, but since the partition created during installation esxi coredump.

No, you can not have created /vmkdump if you do not have a coredump in vmfs.

If you think, that your esxi broke down somewhere, look at/var/core... If any coredump is, your Inbox may have thrown some time, otherwise you're good to go.

In addition, in the case of vmfs partition coredump configured, once you have deleted the file, a new file will be in place if and only if your box has panicked and dumped core.

  • Cannot remove SAN inactive datastore (control enabled storage IO)

    Hello

I had a few SAN Datastore mounted on Vsphere ESXi 4.1 and we moved all the VMDK to the local data store to recreate a single data store. I forgot to remove Datastore before washing on SAN volumes, so they appear as "inactive". Cannot delete volumes because it shows error below

call 'HostDataStoreSystem.RemoveDatastore' of object "datastoreSystem-104"on vCenter Server "xxxx" failed."

Cannot remove datastore "XX_Vol1" because store I / 0 control is enabled on this subject. " Correct it and try the operation again.

I know the storage i/o control is activated. I looked at the VMware KB which runs e/s storage disabled control to remove the volume. "When I tried to uncheck control IO, I another error 'datastore' isn't accessible.

So I kind of know how I can disable the storage i/o control in order to remove inactive datastore.

  • iSCSI Datastore Expansion

I have a 1 TB existing iSCSI volume that fills.  I entered the SAN configuration and add about 900 GB volume.  How can I get the ESX servers to recognize change?

You can't develop an existing VMFS volume. You can create another 900 GB LUN and add it as a measure for the existing VMFS data store. Or better yet create a new freshly this VMFS in LUN data store.

  • How to remove the iscsi storage

    Hello

In the test LAB, I have 2 ESX 3.5 (ESX-1 and ESX-2) attached to the same iSCSI storage called OPENFILER (they have all both local storage).

    1. I want to remove the OPENFILER ESX - 2 storage. Then, right-click on the storage and click on delete. It is said: the resource is in use.

I tried to put the machine in maintenance mode. Did not help... I have to take it apart this machine?

What is the right way to do it?

    2. I installed two virtual machines on my storage OPENFILER ESX-1.

As I mentioned earlier the same storage connected to the ESX-2. When you browse OPENFILER I can see the machines on this (installed on the ESX - 1)

Both an ESX 2 can see unit number logic used by the data store that it will be displayed in the list storage ESX-2 - the only way to remove it is that you will have to hide the LUN the openfiler or ESX - 2

    2. I installed two virtual machines on my storage OPENFILER ESX-1.

The question is you manage these two hosts with Virtual Center - if so you will not be able to have existing virtual machines on two hosts at the same time - in which case you will need to migrate virtual machines from one server ESX to another - with them off a Migration cold or with them under tension - a hot Migration also called VMotion that will require a SAN or a NAS/NFS - shared storage if you are don't not to help Virtual Center, you can save virtual machines using the browser to store data but the virtual machine can only be run on an ESX Server, both-

in this case, it is good way to regain the intact data store if we

you will need to change the ESXi? Or, there is no such scenario?

    Thank you.

    Hello

So a VMFS store be reintroduced to ESX or ESXi the VMFS volume must be readable and correspond to the EUI header / NAA set to paths of storage host created in the esx.conf file or the VC DB vml. If this information is not present while the volume will not be presented as a usable existing VMFS store. I have a blog with some examples to reinstate VMFS stores based on OpenSolaris and ZFS iSCSI volumes.

    http://blog.laspina.ca/roller/ubiquitous/entry/provisioning_disaster_recovery_with_zfs

You can examine the EUI or NAA on any VMFS work and ESX volume with the following command.

    esxcfg-vmhbadevs - m

This gives command the name of dev which are associated with the volume and this info you can use hexdump similar to the following.

    hexdump - n 1100000/dev/sda1

The hexagonal header data will present it as this example output, the value in bold is the guid of stores.

With this information, you can recreate the vml, but it is difficult you should know the format, but for example, we can go.

Use the following command to see what exists in a lot of work.

    cat /etc/vmware/esx.confcat /etc/vmware/esx.conf | grep vml

Also a little advice on usb based ESXi priming devices, you should not run this type of config at least as the creator of the image usb provided a virtual disk for the swap area.

Flash multi layer devices will fail quickly if the swap partition area is on the flash device.

I use a network SAN OpenFiler as a VMWare Datastore.  The current size of the data store was 1 TB and I decided to increase the size of the LUN via OpenFiler to 2 TB.  However, this increase in the logic unit number size is not reflected in the VMWare Datastore and I cannot increase (extend) the size of the existing data store.  I seem to be affected by the same problem as described here:

VMWARE: Cannot expand / increase Datastore VMFS on ESX

Any ideas on how to increase the size of the data store in ESXi?

    Thank you.

Then, it might be a problem of presentation. try not represented this LUN from the storage host and re group - present.

Ensure that the data store is dismounted and detached from everything first.

    Thank you
    Avinash
