Replace disk in RAID-1 of PowerEdge 2970

I managed a PowerEdge 2970 server with a RAID-1 in place.  Recently, one of the drives has failed and we bought two replacement disks.  When I loaded one of burners in the Bay for the drive replacement fails, the PERC utility detected a foreign start-up car and I was able to import the foreign configuration, and the drive has been rebuilt automatically.  I gave the car at night to rebuild and the perfect morning it had worked.  So far so good.

I wanted to replace the other drive in the system as well.  When I took out the disc and put the second replacement, I had again a foreign configuration detected but by selecting the foreign configuration to import on startup option seemed to have no effect.  I searched the PERC utility to try to find something to make the drive added to the existing virtual disk, but no dice.  Finally I ended up putting the original screw back and managed to do the rebuild.

I tried to install the software OpenManage on OS (Red Hat) to see if I had a little better luck.  Currently, I have the original and replacement #1 player in the machine, configured as a virtual drive.  I also put the second replacement in another Bay and he appears as a foreign disk.

I tried to use the option "replace Member disk" in OpenManage but no records have been listed as possible replacements and I received the following message:

Storage Management displays only records that can be used as a member to replace. There are at present no discs that are available, large enough, or the correct type to use as a member to replace for this virtual disk.

Of the original disks are Dell 73 GB SAS model #MBD2174RC.  The replacement disks are Dell 300 GB SAS model #VJR75.

Any help would be appreciated.

IMPORT - used ONLY when a table is offline and is not accessible (several readers showing foreigners, etc.) or when moving disks to a new controller.

CLEAR - used when a table is online and functional and a new disc is introduced or an old drive fails and is marked as foreign.

Selection of evil is a very simple way of corrupting your data.  According to your description, you're lucky, you don't destroy your data, and I guess that there is more to the story that is written (or its configuration was a relief or empty, which is unusual).

NEVER supply down to replace a hot-swap drive.

At this stage, to replace the original with a new disk, you must DELETE the foreign configuration: OMSA, storage, PERC, information/Configuration (link at the top of the page), Clear foreign business in drop-down list of tasks available for the controller.  You can do ANYTHING with a foreign disk until you have solved the foreign configuration (compensation or import).  After erasing the configuration foreign, the disc should show Ready... you will be assigned as a hot spare to start reconstruction.

After you rebuild your array will be always 68 (73 GB) in size.  If you are interested in the use of the newly available space and assuming you have a PERC 5/6 controller, the only thing you can do with the extra space is to create a second RAID array on the disks, which will appear as a separate 'disc' for the operating system.

  • Adding a replacement disk in a RAID 5 (PERC S300) replacement hot

I scoured through comments and think I have the solution almost, but would confirm or correct if possible.

Have a PowerEdge R310, four 500 GB drives, RAID 5, with one of these defined as Global Hot Spare drives.  One of the spare wheel failed, hot (003) disks has done its job and kept during the RAID.

Put in the replacement drive in and can see it is Ready on physical disks via manage open.  More I noticed that he as a Non Raid virtual drive virtual drives.

I thought it was to automatically rebuild the RAID after the disc has been inserted, but it didn't.  I started to reconfigure it on existing RAID, hoping to choose the new disk and start the reconstruction, but he doesn't see the new drive as a physical drive.  I guess that's because the system has assigned the new drive as a new virtual disk.

I remove the new virtual disk, and then run the reconfigure statement the existing virtual disk of RAID 5 to add the new drive?

I hope this makes sense and I appreciate any help!  Right now my server is in place and very well, but these 500 GB drives are reliable - I lost an another late last year and replaced him.

Thanks for the quick response.  If I already have a spare drive (the one who took over after the failure of the other disk), it will allow me to do the new hot spare?

This player is no longer a "rescue." It is now a member of the array fully operational. You don't have a spare drive. It is also possible to have two hot-spare set.

I run the Reconfiguration on the RAID 5 in Open Manager after the non - RAID VD is removed?

No, Reconfigure will EXPAND a virtual disk, usually by adding a physical drive. So if you have a 3-drive RAID 5, you insert a new disk and run the statement reconfigures, you might reconfigure your 3-drive RAID 5 to 4 drive RAID 5 (is worth a drive to storage space by adding to your table/server) or a 4-drive RAID 6 (essentially a RAID 5 with a disc of relief, but instead of relief being a non-member member - only standyby player - help is integrated with the table as a full member. the RAID array results in an additional parity so that two disks can fail while maintaining the availability of the matrix, rather than wait for a player to fail before starting the reconstruction to become a member of the table; RAID 6 is usually best when using very large capacity disks).

You should be able to just replace the drive and rebuild automatically.  That said, before you do anything, make sure that your system is fully backed up.  RAID is redundancy - NOT a substitute for a backup current, functional, verified.

  • Replace the two disks in RAID 1 for new

    Hello

I replaced both my RAID 1 disks for the new ones of the same size. I would like to know what is the best way to do it, I can clone the data from the old drive to the new and rebuild the raid 1 or is there a better way to do it?

    Concerning

    Hi Reignfire,

Regarding the first part of your question, yes the RAID 1 will be re - build the table on the new hard drive.  However, the second part of your question was not considered, as we apply this method of replacement of hard drives in the case of a hard drive, otherwise, so I recommend that you back up all data before you try this.

    Please come back for clarification.

  • PERC 710 add physical disks for RAID 5 virtual disk and keep data

I think to set up a physical disk 4 RAID 5 array on my new PowerEdge T320.  That should give me enough space to last long.  I have two empty slots of HD.  If I need more space, later, I'll be able to add one or two additional physical disks without losing the data already on the virtual disk?  If so, how?  I don't see a way to do this in the manual of Perc 710.

    Thank you

    Andrew

Yes, it is "doable" later.  This can be done in the PERC BIOS, but it can be done in OMSA (OpenManage Server Administrator) within the OS.

One thing to keep in mind is the limit of 2 TB "floppy" Windows on BIOS systems compatible.  If you plan to 4x4TB disks in a RAID 10, that TB ~ 8 'disc' will be converted to the GPT and BIOS UEFI boot mode value.

    Hello Sara

You're talking Direct path IO or single root i/o virtualization? If so, none of these features are supported on the 2970 system.

I don't think that or the other of these characteristics were available until our 11 generation systems.

You need to contact Dell for a replacement recovery disc. A upgrade disc won't work, as you would a new OEM installation with OEM key.

  • PowerEdge 2970: Can I install a 8224SE AMD?

    Hi all,

I have a Dell Poweredge 2970, and I want to upgrade the processor.

Is it possible to install 2 AMD Opteron 8224 SE?

On the card is reported to the 2224 SE is supported, but 8224 has the same socket/Ghz/FSB

I don't know, but the only difference between this 2 AMD should be the 8224 SE can be installed on servers that support up to 8 socket and the 2224 SE on servers that supported up to 2 socket, is this correct?

    Best regards.

    Diego

    Hi Diego,.

You're right, we do not support the 8224, but I do not see that we support the 2224 either; not sure if I've forgotten or if you saw that. In any case, I don't have much experience with AMD configurations so I did some research on your question. A poster at forums.pcper.com/showthread.php suggests it may be possible to use CPUs 8-socket in a 2-socket Board, of course never tested/validated by Dell such a configuration, and I seem not to be able to find something concrete directly to AMD (although they would probably see us because it is our Board of Directors!) So if you had them practice I don't think that it would be wrong to try to POST although I can't be certain, but is based on the fact that it is not supported, I would probably warn against making a new acquisition for a CPU supported. For the 2970, we officially supported these Opterons:

    2210

    2212

    2212HE

    2216

    2220

    2222SE

    2347HE

    2350

    2356

    2358SE

    2360SE

    2372HE

    2376

    2376HE

    2378

    2379HE

    2380

    2381HE

    2382

    2384

    2387

    2389

    2393SE

    2427

    2431

    2435

I hope this helps somehow. Let us know if we can provide any other information or assistance.

  • Size of physical disk in RAID Utility

    Hello

I just purcahsed a Dell Power edge 620 and am trying to configure the virtual disks of RAID. I noticed that, before even as I set up the RAID type physical disk sizes indicated by the utility RAID is less than the size of real disk. Why would it be?

For example all the 146 GB drive shows at 136,12 GB and all 300 GB disk showing only 278.7 GB

I never configured the HP servers and they always showed the same size disk as the size of the acutal disc.

    Here is my configuration:

    Disc 2 x 146 GB RAID 1 configured

    10 x 300 GB drives configured for RAID 5

RAID Controller PERC H710P adapter Bios configuration utility 4.03 - 0002

is nayone knows why this would be? is this s setting?

    It's normal... explanation:
    http://www.dslreports.com/FAQ/9716

If HP tells you the size, then they are like Apple made and shows you the binary size.  Windows and other operating systems and devices (Dell tools) and even some Linux distributions will show you the size in decimal.

You think that you have found all of the 300 GB when presented in binary, but the thing you need to remember is that a file will take more space than decimal, binary for the same reason, fill your fastest storage space.  That storage is provided in binary format or see the usable storage, you will only ever get binary (x) = decimal (.93x) for storage.

I have a T310 with a sas 6 / ir RAID controller. One of the disks in a raid 1 is a failure. What is the best way to replace the defective drive?

  • replacing a drive RAID 1 failure in PowerEdge T710

I just got the disk(146GB) of replacement for one of the disks RAID 1 has failed. I would like to know what the best approach is to replace the defective with the new one (same size), now that the spare drive (300 GB) is used by the raid. I want to get the bigger drive and re - assign as a global hot spare, by the original configuration is possible without disconnecting the server?

    Here is my config:

    T710 Server (8 discs - 4 X 146 GB, 4 x 300 GB)

    PERC H700 integrated

    2x146GB drives - RAID 1

    2x146GB drives - RAID 1

    3x300GB drive - RAID 5

    1 x 300 GB disk - hot spare

    Thank you.

This should work for you. What it will do is essentially the same process I described. When you insert the replacement drive and implement the Member to replace it will fail then the immediate replacement and then start reconstruction on replacement.
