  Please bear with me. I'm not fine with a PC. I transferred my files from my Windows Vista PC to my new Macbook Pro lap top about a year using the Windows Wizard.   I use a USB flash drive or a backup hard drive to the "exfat" format, which can be read by Microsoft windows and OS - X.

  This way I will always have a copy of my files on a storage disk that I can use with my Mac or PC.
