Restoring files from Windows XP (.bkf) in Windows 7

I had a complete computer failure and replaced my laptop with a new one running Windows 7. I need to restore all my files from backups made on Windows XP (.bkf files). This doesn't seem to be possible in Windows 7. I saw a few proposals for solutions that involve the restoration of a machine running XP and then transfer the files, but I don't have a second machine to do this. How can I access backed up files?

And if it does not, you can wait until Microsoft releases the NTBackup Restore Utility for Windows 7 (as they did for Windows Vista). Check out this thread.

  • Restoring files from DVD back to Windows 7 Home Premium

How to restore files from DVD discs created as a return to the top on my computer?

To restore the files on your DVD drive, you can simply insert the disc into your DVD drive and copy files directly to the desired location on your computer.

If you have created the DVD disc is a recovery disk (a disk you can use to restore Windows when Windows does not work properly), you can consult the following Web page to understand how to use it:

    Hi zztopzztop,

Instead of a new user account, you can move the public folder of music, and from there the two accounts are accessible and played.

    Check out the link:

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows-Vista/sharing-files-with-the-public-folder

If you want to continue copying, then you can copy if the default location for the new user account.

Sign in with the user account that you may have created. To ensure that this new user account has administrator privileges.

    a. open the Explorer, click on organize, and select folder and Search Options

    b. click the display and check the option Show hidden files and folders box and click OK to save the settings.

Now navigate to your C:\Users\(Old Username folder) and copy all the files and folders in the folder C:\Users\(Old Username) in the C:\Users\(New Username folder).

  • How can I transfer outlook express files from windows XP to windows 7 on my new laptop?

I was able to transfer my address book, but unable to transfer my e-mail files express outlook my desktop (Windows XP) to my laptop (windows7).  I used an easy transfer cable, but have all the files I wanted.

The transfer is easy, but you fail to mention what e-mail program you use. Windows 7 does not have a mail client included as OE in XP.

If you use Windows Live Mail, so I'd say do this way.

Transfer of data from Outlook Express and Windows Live Mail:

    For Messages:

Copy the * ENTIRE * OE message store folder to a flash drive. (Folders.dbx must be included). Place it on the desktop or another location on the computer using WLMail. Open WLMail and: file | Import | Messages | Microsoft Outlook Express 6, and the point where it was saved.

    Location of OE message store:

In OE: Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store folder will reveal the location of your Outlook Express files. Note the location and navigate on it in Explorer Windows or, copy and paste in start | Run.

In Windows XP, Win2K & Win2K3 the OE user files (DBX and WAB) are by default marked as hidden. To view these files in Windows Explorer, you must enable Show hidden files and folders under start | Control Panel | Folder Options icon | Opinion, or in Windows Explorer. Tools | Folder options | View.

    For addresses:

Open the address book in OE and file | Export | Address book (wab) and save it to the desktop. Copy it to a flash drive. Place it on the desktop or another location on the computer using WLMail.

Open the Contacts list in WLMail, (go |) Contacts in the Menu bar) and the file | Import | Address book (wab) Windows and the point where you saved it.

Note: If you use a CD or a DVD instead of a flash drive, after placing on the new machine you must remove the read-only attribute in the properties before you import.

    For the account settings:

In OE: Tools | Accounts, select the account and export it to the desktop. This will be an .iaf file. Copy it to the new computer and WLMail desktop: tools | Accounts and import the settings from the location you saved the.

  • Cannot find the Favorites file from Windows Explorer in Windows XP. Does not currently have IE in Windows XP

I have been using Windows XP for a while.  I am always connected in Windows Explorer through the icon 'Butterfly '.  Never interested in Internet Explorer - too cluttered screen.  I have several files in Windows Explorer and virtually none in Internet Explorer 8.  How can I find the Favorites file

Windows Explorer so I can import them from a new laptop with Windows 7? There, not too many people who understand what I'm saying

    Tommy,

You've done a good job answering my question.  Somehow, and I don't know how I did it I accidentally erased all the favourites I had accumulated for quite some time.  I have not found these missing Favorites in the trash that is where I would have expected to have. But that's another story and not a good thing.  I have so appreciated your efforts and I hope at some point I can get these favorites - wherever they are now.
