Only Windows 8 Enterprise Edition supports installation on external hard drives, and it is only available for volume license customers. Windwos 8 Pro cannot be installed on an external hard drive.

  • I can run vista windows on an external hard drive?

Hi I was wondering if I could run windows vista Home premium (64 bit) on an external hard drive...

and how would I do it?

I was reading around and found some info that said that I need to start from the main internal drive, but I think that my internal drive has some errors and im not sure how long it will last... Although I did have too much problems with it since my last restore full on a month and half ago.

any suggestions or steps I must take to be able to do this?

I don't think that this is possible. It is possible to install/boot from a HDD external bootable with some revisions minor http://www.mydigitallife.info/2009/07/15/how-to-install-windows-7-or-vista-from-bootable-portable-usb-flash-memory-key-or-hard-disk-drive/ (assuming that your BIOS supports this)-say if your CD/DVD has not, recovery or reinstallation, but it is not the same as Vista from the external HARD drive.  I think the biggest problem is the drivers who won't be loaded until the Windows startup and Windows could not start without the USB already loaded if it was located on an external USB drive (and the other drivers as well) and there may be some problems with the boot files.  There may be other issues - I think XP and Vista are INTENTIONALLLY DESIGNED to work this way (for reasons of piracy among others)...

I read a post from Carey Frisch MVP, who says flatly that it cannot be done.  Here is an article on the topic which also categorically states that it cannot be done with XP or Vista http://computer-drives-storage.suite101.com/article.cfm/can_you_boot_from_external_hard_disk_drive.

I read a few articles that say it's possible with XP using the appropriate BIOS and a whole bunch of changes in the registry (changes that have not been identified), but I frantly in doubt.  Too many other articles argue against it.  In addition, it would be MUCH slower (no matter how fast the hard disk) due to the method of connection - you do not use this way on a daily basis.

Many of the dismantled external when hard drives are compaatible with and will fit inside the computer case and work as internal drives - maybe you can try that as an alternative (assuming that you do not want to buy another drive HARD internal for now).

To test your hard drive, check the manufacturer and then get the diagnostic utility of: http://www.techsupportforum.com/hardware-support/hard-drive-support/302602-hard-drive-diagnostic-utilities.html.  If she failed the test, replace it.  If she passes the test, then it's probably nothing wrong with it.  You can also run chkdsk /f /r from the elevated command prompt and see what happens - happens to you lots of bad sectors and a lot of corruption, then it is time to replace the drive before it will totally fail...

I hope this helps (although it is probably not the answer you were hoping for).

    Good luck!

  • Data from external hard drive not visible

My computer has been recently infected with the virus to restore Windows. As soon as I was aware, I unplugged my network cable and a drive external hard (without using to remove the device safely), who has all my data. I then used a previous restore point to get rid of the virus, which was apparently with success, because there is no remaining trace.

Now, the external hard drive is not visible in Explorer. Other utility programs say that the data is always there, but I can't see it or access it in the usual way. This drive worked perfectly up to this point. I tried to restart, unplug the external drive and reconnect it and using a different USB port, but so far nothing has worked.

How can I get Vista to recognize my external drive?

    Hello

Run the system restore will be not delete or remove the virus on the computer. System Restore helps you restore system files from your computer to an earlier point in time.

First I suggest you to run the check, and online virus scan if no malware or viruses detected on the computer activity. You can run the scan for viruses online from the link below: http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx

NOTE: Make sure that you select the correct version of the operating system before downloading the scanner)

For the problem with the external hard drive, follow the methods below:

    Method 1:

Check if the device is detected in Device Manager. Follow the steps for the same thing:

    a. click on start

    b. click Run, in the Run dialog box type devmgmt.msc

    (c) in the Device Manager window, locate the drive

    Method 2:

Run the fix it from the link below and check if it helps. Link: Hardware devices do not work or are not detected in Windows: http://support.microsoft.com/mats/hardware_device_problems/

  • Cannot start windows, impossible to reinstall windows, can't restore windows to the external hard drive or to an earlier point in time!

I have a Dell studio 1535 laptop. When I start it the typical loading screen appears with Dell logo and the possibility to go to the installation or boot menu.

If I leave this office, I go to the Windows Error Recovery screen with give me the opportunity to start the system restart or start windows normally. If I start windows normally, the loading windows screen comes up while the screen flashes blue with white writing (too fast to read) and I am referred to the Dell loading screen.

If I select the Startup Repair tool, I come to a screen where I am asked to select my operating system, but the list is empty. It also shows if you don't see your operating system in the list then click loading drivers to load the drivers from your hard drive. He said now insert the device installation media, so I put in the installation CD for the drivers that came with my laptop. I browse through the files on the cd and select 1386 > R180982 > IAAHCI. This will display a list of drivers and I chose Intel(r) 82801HEM/HBM SATA AHCI Controller (I'll explain why later). However when I add this driver it says that the software that supports your device requires you to restart your computer. Also, if I check computer while browsing my HDD is not listed, which I think might be a problem.

Furthermore, if I don't take any driver, and then click Next when I have 5 options. If I do the Startup Repair, it only takes a few seconds and said if repairs where succesful windows starts normally (which it doesn't).

If I do the system restore an error comes up saying that, to perform an offline system restore, you must specify which windows installation you want to restore. By example, if the installation is in "C:\Windows" should be restored in the following command: rstrui.exe/OFFLINE:C:\Windows. I have it entered in the command prompt, it runs it sends me to the System Restore screen, but says that no restore points were created so that I can't keep (However, I know that I don't actually have the restore points.

If I select Windows complete PC Restore it gives the error message "an internal error has occurred. The following information can help you resolve the error: the parameter is incorrect. (0 x 80070057) ».

If I select Windows memory diagnostic tool and select Restart now and check for problems I get the error "Windows cannot verify the memory problems. A problem is preventing Windows from checking for memory problems during startup. Try to check the problems again by running the tool manually.

I managed the Dell Factory Restore Image but that did nothing.

And no, I can't reinstall windows.

  • Installed new hard drive on laptop with Windows 7 can install Windows XP on external hard drive and plug it into USB?

Original title: Win7 Pro + HD Ext different OS
I just installed a new hard drive in my laptop with Windows 7 Pro 64 bit.
Would it not be possible to install WIn XP or Win 98 + older software (Win 98 or XP) on an external hard drive, then plug it into USB, laptop, in order to run old programs of 16-32 bit?

It would be best to run Windows 98 or XP in a Virtual Machine, if you need to run older programs.

You can use a free software such as Oracle VirtualBox or VMware Player:

  • How can I transfer images from external hard drive with the gateway settings to new computer?

I used to use Adobe Bridge on a computer that no longer works. My computer tech then made the hard drive of this computer on an external hard drive. Now I want to transfer all those images with all the settings, I applied them to my new computer. My new computer is a PC with Windows 7 and I run Adobe Creative Cloud on it.

Thanks for your reply. Where the xmp file?

It depends on your preferences settings. By default, Bridge is set to store metadata in an XMP file. This is the file that has the same name as the original, but it only use the extension ".xmp" instead of Raw file extension.

Bridge stores this file in the same folder as the original. If you use Bridge to move the files to another location it selects automatically the xmp files to travel with her.

If you use the view menu / show hidden files, you will see what Curt meant by XMP are hidden files, all have a document icon.

If you converted to DNG RAW format this data is written to the file itself, as is the case with other types of files such as jpeg and tiff, that can be managed by the cab.

You should be able to copy the whole folder to your new system or bridge to the old disk, select the file in the content panel and the use of the Control Panel folder to navigate to the new location and use drag and drop

    Many options

  • Boot from external hard drive

My external hard drive is connected to my USB hub member.  I need to start from the outside (and backup on it works fine).  When I hold down the option key to restart, externally does not appear as a startup disk.

You format the disk to a bootable disk and you have the OS files needed for this topic?

  • Windows 7 and external hard drives

I have a Dell laptop with Windows 7 Ultimate edition.  I used to be able to connect an external hard drive and back up files.

Without warning, my computer won't recognize the external hard drive, as in don't even know not its here.  For a brief moment, I would get an error message, but now nothing.

By browsing the internet, I see this is a very common problem and nothing I have tried seems to work to correct the problem.  Site Microsoft Web is no help at all.

    Is there a solution?

    Hello

    1. Do you have an error message when you connect the external hard drive to the computer?
    2. Have you tried to plug the hard drive into another USB port or another computer?
    3. Is the computer recognizing other USB devices to connect to the computer?
    4. Did you recent hardware or changes to the software to the computer before the show?

I suggest you try the following steps if the hard drive works fine with one computer to another, and none of the USB devices are not getting recognized by the computer. You could deal with this problem for several reasons such as external hard drive defective, obsolete or damaged USB drivers does not assign a drive letter for your key USB etc.

You can refer to the suggestion of Shekhar S in the following link and check if it helps.
