SAN based replication options

What are the SAN based replication with oracle dataguard purchase options?

All those set up SAN replication (for DR) on front without oracle dataguard?

Nothing against Oracle Data Guard but as based replication option SAN - EMC VPLEX provides very good option to achieve the RTO of zero which is not possible otherwise.

It is certified by Oracle, so no worries around support.

Thank you

  • vSphere Replication options missing in 5.8.0.1 SRM

In my lab, I have the following Setup and can not get any vSphere replication to be available within the SRM options.  Single table according to replication is an option.  I looked and looked for a solution and we tried everything I could think to get the options will appear and I had no luck so far.

    vcenter1 - 5.5 U2 windows install

    esxi1 - 5.5

    SRM1 - MRS. 5.8.0.1 (install file 5.8.0 - 2336305)

    vR1 - vSphere replication 5.8.0.1

    vcenter2 - 5.5 U2 windows install

    esxi2 - 5.5

    SRM2 - MRS. 5.8.0.1 (install file 5.8.0 - 2336305)

    vR2 - vSphere replication 5.8.0.1

I started my lab tests by deploying the lefthand VSA with MRS.  Now, I'm moving on using SRM with replication of vSphere.  The steps I've taken since the tests on the left:

    Devices removed from Lefthand VSA

Uninstalled SRM and chose to clear the contents of the database also

Confirmed SRM is not displayed in the Web Client more

VSphere installed a replication on both sites or set to 1 VM - replication is complete

Installed SRM on the same servers as before and matching installation

Market thought the SRM configuration theres no reference and no vSphere replication option.  There's also no mention of any SRM integration when in vSphere replication interface.  Now I remember to deploy the same configuration in 5.1 which gave vR deployment options in RS, but that was then.  Now, says the documentation, you're supposed to first deploy vR, which set up and deploy the SRM.  SRM then detects vR installation and I guess that, in theory, these display options. I checked the permissions and everything seems good.  My lab account is the account I use to save and install everything.  Fine RV, by MRS replication pairs, they do not know that they could work together.  I even reinstalled SRM again and confirmed the installation files have been correct on the interoperability matrix and everything seems good.  MRS. acts just like theres nothing, but the options table replication.  I think theres a version special MRS or vSphere replication, which is necessary for the two to work together, but I can't find any documentation on this topic.

    Help, please.  Thank you!

    Hello

Since 5.8 SRM and VR are decoupled. The only way to install vSphere replication is for download and by deploying the vSphere unit of replication.

Once you do this, you should be able to right click on a virtual machine, and then select Configure replication. When replication is set up for at least a virtual computer, you can include it in a group of Protection of SRM. You can do this by going to SRM UI, select "create Protection Group and selecting"vSphere replication"replication type.»

  • VMware ESX 4.0 Update 1 with HP LeftHand P4500 Thin Provisioning (SAN based and client based?)

I know with ESX 4.0 that you now have the option to select a provisioning on the side of ESX.  I'm already thin provisioning my LUN on the left side.  I do both or just the side SAN?  Also, I heard some people say that it is better to use a block size of 8MB for best peformance of SAN, do you think it is recommended/best practices as well?  Thanks in advance.

The point to offer 8 MB block sizes is flexibility.  Because you cannot change the size of the block without reformatting the VMFS file system, you probably don't want to need to.  There is a great overview of a few points on this theme to the yellowwire from bricks.  I recommend you start here and follow the links.  It only takes 5-10 minutes, and you will be able to make your own choices.  For us, we're all migrate to blocks of 8 MB.

What about thin provisioning, I have no practical experience.  But here's my point: If you sell thin anywhere, you have a more complicated system to follow in terms of space put into service and space required.  Must be taken account of this that data may coming in the future, or you might run out of space.  So, I ask you where you want to configure the monitoring of the use of space and how you want to administer the storage.  If you want to do on the primary server, and then stick with that.  If you want your VMware administrators to manage management, then do it in VMware.

My recommendation: If you're already doing it on the back-end successfully, then stick with what you have.  Whatever it is, do it only in one place.  Otherwise, you're probably too complicate your configuration.

  • SRM feasibility and cost of the analysis/calculations

I'm trying to understand if SRM is worth the cost to us and if it will work the way we him.

So all comments of current users is much appreciated.

First off we have 1 with about 10 hosts (10x2CPU) in SiteA and 10 vcenter (10x2CPU) in SiteB (all business licenses)

I think to get this working I need another license of vcenter and related use mode?

    1. do change anything with my current vMotions/clones/etc. of SiteA SIteB on?

SRM is a polished product I try to use vDR because we pay for it and I can't say that I am happy with it

    1. are there statement?

1 b... can I report on virtual machines and what do we do for each other? basically a records print.

2 is currently the only way to replicate the data side SAN? or is there another method? I read that vsphere 5 will come with the host instead of SAN-based replication (so I guess that now his only based SAN). How can I check if my SAN is compatible? DS4800 and HP P2000 G3.

If I have a virtual machine with SRM protection I

    1. continue to vDR backup in production? What happened to DR?

    2. can I take DR online to test the functionality with real users who connect and move it back to replicate?

3 - is anyone using this for SQL?

    If I use MRS...

    1. I believe all licenses should be covered by the server from production because it is basically just a copy of offline data. Anyone know / have experience with microsoft windows / ibm tivoli/websphere/mq

    2. didn't he settled on the vcenter Server? or do I need another server.

    3. the current per license VM, is - this roll back cover after going to DR?

    I know it's a lot of questions.

    Thanks for all your comments

    Hello

I'll try to answer your questions

I think to get this working I need another license of vcenter and related use mode?

Yes, you need another license of vCenter. Bound Mode is optional.

    1. do change anything with my current vMotions/clones/etc. of SiteA SIteB on?

Yes. As each instance of vCenter manages its own guests, you will not be able to perform these operations between the sites with or without related modes configured.

    1. are there statement?

1 b... can I report on virtual machines and what do we do for each other? basically a records print.

SRM record test reports / operations of real failover with all stages (including the individual virtual machines).

    Is that what you mean?

2 is currently the only way to replicate the data side SAN? or is there another method?

With versions up to 4.x, this is the only method.

I read that vsphere 5 will come with the host instead of SAN-based replication (so I guess that now his only based SAN).

Replication does not instead, in addition to the table.

How can I check if my SAN is compatible? DS4800 and HP P2000 G3.

    1. continue to vDR backup in production? What happened to DR?

In my view, there is no problem to use it. What do you mean by DR? Do you intend to have virtual machines running on your site of DR?

    2. can I take DR online to test the functionality with real users who connect and move it back to replicate?

Yes, it is called test failover. Virtual machines are being lit on snapshots of storage (if supported by table) or replication is temporary stopped. To test you can (and should) use isolated network to avoid conflicts with the production of virtual machines.

3 - is anyone using this for SQL?

In some situations (unplanned failover) VM lights in a consistent state down.

    1. I believe all licenses should be covered by the server from production because it is basically just a copy of offline data. Anyone know / have experience with microsoft windows / ibm tivoli/websphere/mq

I think you're right. I saw KB Microsoft licensing in DR environment regarding I'll post if I find it.

    2. didn't he settled on the vcenter Server? or do I need another server.

You can install RS on vCenter or another Windows Server, virtual or physical.

    3. the current per license VM, is - this roll back cover after going to DR?

Yes, you can reuse the restore license key.

  • difference between the disaster site and recovery recovery management

    Hello guys,.

can you please let me know if the disaster site and recovery recovery management are one and the same or are they different features of VI suite. do we buy these tools of recovery after disaster from a third party

name of the vendor? If Yes, what are the best providers out there on the market

recovery after disaster and SRM? In the meantime thanks for all who responded to this question.

    see you soon

SRM is a tool to manage a recovery after disaster. There is not such a product called DR, but you can develop a strategy of DR to have your work with or without SRM environment.

Dr., you need SAN based replication (or tool making it). SAN vendors have solutions that can be integrated with SRM or simply be part pof your particular strategy of DR.

  • Is it possible to install oracle fail-safe-kind-of (active-passive) SAN replication for oracle?

    Dear Experts,

Is it possible to configure replication of SAN (active-passive) integrated security for oracle for oracle?

To get the RTO < 60 seconds

    • If the primary host fails, the remote site should have the option to start the oracle database.
    • Sites are geographically remote.

SAN storage replication, can it be used in my scenario?

    • I have no option to implement oracle Data Guard as its very expensive.

Is that what someone achieved something similar with SAN storage replication?

    • I have oracle SE.
    • It is obvious that the all-flash backup can be quick.

What should be the strategy to have DR site get a few seconds, if the primary site failed for some reason any

    • Daily incremental backup with RMAN. And archive backup runs for every 1 minutes
    • To have the site of DR upward and running within 60 seconds, it still requires too much time to restore the database on remote site and have archive APPLIED setpoint
    • What could be the solution with san replication? RTO is 60 seconds

  • Replication - presync before moving to SAN

Compellent support told me that if a replication link is broken, or if the SAN is re-IPed, replication must be installed again from scratch.  Is this the case?  If there is that no point trying presync SAN before you send it to the site of DR.  It's almost hard to believe that the system resends every bit of data if a link fails or if you re - IP of the San.

All the other replication tech I used would rescan, but this does not mean necessarily all data would be returned.

Also, they have never answered this - if I had used replication asynchronous SAN uses separate replays for this or should I use regular reruns?

That's not true, you can certainly pass a SAN and replication continues from where they had left him. Search for Compellent Knowledge Center "CSTA - prepare and pass a Compellent DR Site. Who guides you through the process of RE-IPing, etc..

If you use Async as soon as there is a replay of a volume of replication, it queue which to replicate. There is no separate Replays to achieve this.

  • vSphere / space recover / SAN replication

    Hello

In my business, we have two groups (Dell PS6100 EQL) SAN with replication configured on each volume of a group of SAN. Sometimes we move on recovery of space on a specific volume of SAN.

To do this, I need to disable replication on that volume, I execute the recovery of space on a host ESX mapped and then I reconfigure replication that will create a new set of replicas (with a full copy of first).

During this operation (depending on the size of the volume, a few hours), if something goes wrong on the volume of SAN, we lost VMS hosted on this volume, because the first line has not yet been created.

I could keep the replica set before disabling the replication, but the target SAN does not take into account the new volume size... I also thought about the replica cloning before neutralizing him (and destroy) but it will take a lot of time...

Someone at - it another idea to protect data when I proceed to a recovery of the space?

    Thanks in advance

    Hello

    You are welcome.

Re: Clone.  Yes, creation of the clone is very fast, no matter the size of the volume.

Re: Clone replica.  Yes, it will remain if you remove the replica set.

  • Need help in the choice of VMware DR SAN technology

    Hi all
I look at which one is the better choice for DR environment?
between SAN based technology replication or 3rd party application (Veeam Backup and replication, or VMware Site Recovery Manager).
my situation is that I have running for most VMware ESX virtual environment as follows:
    1. production environment that is mixed HP DL 380 and the server blades with EMC Clariion CX4 - 500 FC - SAN
    2. planning for DR environment that uses the same model of server, but still think that SAN technology that we could use for replication between two sites. The recovery site is not necessarily to be as fast as the current production and the SAN cannot be EMC
Any comments would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.

you will need almost the same model in order to achieve the SAN replication by using the built-in function of SAN storage. If this is not possible, you may be able to virtualize the SAN, so that both are of the same type. One way is using HP Lefthand VSA or Falconstore.

  • SRA options for small laboratory tests?

I need to make the Site Recovery Manager basic laboratory tests, to try to get a better grip on it for production deployment.  But, in my lab, I have only low-end NAS services.  I use some servers Linux NFS base for my small lab.

When you try to implement the SRM, I quickly found that I needed a NAS/SAN with replication storage adapter (SRA) software.    Can anyone recommend low range for SRA options in a lab environment?  Is open source, an option?   How about a low end device certified VMware SAN, as Iomega units?

Yes, go to the HP Lefthand Networks VSA, it's a virtual appliance, uses almost no RAM (384 MB if I remember correctly), and provide you with disk space.  A couple of those, download the SRA of vmware.com/downloads, follow the left guide to the replication of the installation, and you can have yourself a laboratory MIS in a few hours.  Finally, I checked that they have downloads for workstation and ESX, I've set up labs on both and they worked very well.

Maybe someone else knows a different "lab" type solution, but it worked for me in the past.

  • How to disable the transfer of Subscriber conversation options?

I have a worm unit 4.2 on CallManager optional Conversation 1 running for subscribers.

Is there a way to remove the menu "press 4 to transfer options?

The customer would prefer users not be able to change call extension or block of transfer by the auto attendant.

    Thank you

    Scott

The best way to go about what works in any version of the unit is to assign users to a Service class that has a transfer restriction table the value ' * ' as not allowed. This means that users cannot change their strings of transfer to alll via web interfaces or phone. An administrator, however, will receive an Admin cos that would (probably) enter any number they like (do not forget that the restriction tables are applied based on the user who changes the number, not the user who's number is changed).

In the next version 5.0 of the unit early next year custom keymap tool allows you to create a personalized conversation based on option 1 Covnersation if you like and it allows you to disable the items of the menu setup you want that users come - that inclusdes the conversation of transfer settings.

The i7-720 is a Quad core, so 6 mb L3 would be similar to 3 MB L3 on a dual core (not quite, but it's not as much of advantage that it would seem).

The 720 vs 620 would be to you and your use.  The 720 will clearly have a performance advantage (treatment), but if you frequently use the battery, it will give you much less battery life.  The 620 also manages a bit cooler as well.

I'm biased towards the Lenovo (ThinkPad) since I've had a great experience with them, love their quality of construction and reliability (durability) long term.  I've had nothing that good experiences with this T500

    Good luck, whatever you choose.

  • vSphere replication vs. SRM

What are the basic factors which would lead me to choose replication or SRM vsphere in a client environment?

You ask a comparison of replication on Bay with SRM vs vSphere replication and SRM (SRM can use both) or ask about the differences between replication vSphere autonomous vs. SRM (with an RV or ABR)?

If this is the first I would recommend this post: Articles VMware SRM - vs vSphere - VMware vSphere Blog - replication array-based replication

If it's the second, VR does not include all the orchestration, test, reporting and class DR SRM operating company, but allows a protection individual VM and recovery into or through the clusters.  VR works to retrieve a few (less than 5-10) virtual machines as the recovery process must be made individually for each virtual computer. As mentioned made autonomous VR default orchestration, automation, without interruption of service analysis and account of the capabilities of MRS. VR is included in vSphere Essentials more than regulation or newer, the SRM is a VM or per CPU license (within vCloud Suite Enterprise).
