Satellite A300 Linux fan control

Hi all

I am running Fedora 9 (kernel 2.6.26) on my Toshiba A300 (T8100, 3 GB of ram). Almost every piece of equipment is running properly (except the radeon 3650 card, but that was expected and people working on a driver for him). Now the only issue I'm facing is the noise from the CPU fan. What is happening is that even if I keep the laptop voluntarily slowed for a long time (CPU activity is very low), the CPU fan continues to run during this period and is very noisy and very disturbing.

Usually the fan starts to turn (to 100% of its rpm, very strong) as soon as I start up the PC and does not stop. When I boot Windows Vista, the fan is behaving differently, that's starting to turn when there is a long period of heavy workload and then slows down and stops finally when the PC is idle.

I tried to use different Governors of CPU (Linux kernel drivers) as conservative and powersave, and nothing has changed. The noise is there, the fans are running * without * actually lower the temperature of the CPU (which is constant ~ 45 ° C when it is inactive), etc.

So any ideas, guys, on how I can correct this situation. Is there a tool to control the speed of the CPU to user-space fan? What is ACPI? Sensors? The computer phone is just a beautiful piece of hardware, but the noise of the fan is to kill the user experience all.

Kind regards
Ilyes Gouta.

I have no experience with Linux, but you could try and look for an alternative Linux of the programmable control of portable equipment (NHC) or operate using wine.
Also tried to get all the fixes or patches, but only found for other laptops.

Maybe some Linux forums might give you a better answer than me.

    Hello together,

I have a problem with my Satellite L300-22R model PSLB8E-0QL028GR (Ubuntu 8.10) and the fan control. At first the fan does not work. After a few minutes, the fan operates at 100% until the laptop is turned off. I think it's a problem with acpi.

    Hello

I use Satellite A300 almost 5 months now and I didn't notice this kind of behavior. No problem at all.

I think you type carefully, but please try to disable the touch pad using the FN + F9 key combination.
In any case, if you are 100% sure that there is something wrong, you must contact the nearest authorized service provider. With the help of special tools, they can check the functionality of the keyboard.

    Hello

You can adjust the brightness of the screen using Toshiba Power Saver? With this tool, I can set the brightness of the screen for Macintosh (AC adapter) and normal (battery). I like it a lot because I can also put more options and you can download it on the Toshiba site:

For the FN keys on your laptop, you need the tools Toshiba you can find on the site of Toshiba, too.

Please don't be crazy about me, but you should take it too literally. This all should have the infrared signal receiver (IR port). Please use s operating manuals and check if that port is available on your Satellite A300.

    Hello

Have you tried to find the answer on some Linux forum?

If you will find some useful info please post it here.

    Good luck!

  • Satellite A300 - 1 5 ACPI is not supported under Linux

I have laptop Toshiba A300 - 1 5. When I run Windows absolutely everything works fine.
But when I boot Linux (I tested the two 8.10 of Ubuntu and Fedora 10), Fn keys does not work.
Neither is bluetooth, which is a USB hidden and disabled by default.

    I noticed that pilots * toshiba.ko* and * toshiba_acpi.ko* cannot be loaded.
    I tried to load them, but both * dmesg * and said */var/log.messages*: * {color: #000080} not a cell phone supported. {color} *.
    I also tried to use * toshset, toshutil, fnfx *, but they all need * / dev/toshiba * and * / proc/acpi/toshiba * or * / proc/toshiba * exist.
And it is impossible to load them, because the cell phone is not supported.

    I have two questions:

1 Toshiba plans to cooperate with suppliers of Linux in order to fix this bug.
I have visited many Linux forums and many people's complaint they have keys functional unfunctioning under Linux.
So, I think that if the product is thrown on the market, it must be supported, is it not?

    2. How can I temporarily fix this bug to get the missing functionality before the next version of Ubuntu or Fedora? Can someone advice any solution.
(Well, please don't say: leave Linux and use Windows.) I want to use Linux, not Windows. "And I want a job in the same way).

If you want additional information about a bug, I will provide.
    Thank you very much.

  • Satellite A300-1DB CPU Fan is boring, too strong

    Hi all

I bought a Toshiba Satellite A300-1DB today in a German (580 euros) and I really like the design of laptops and performance, but there is a big problem I can not bear more (and I used it only for 2 hours).

The CPU fan on the left side of the laptop is annoyning Yes: even if I keep the laptop idle (CPU activity is very low, just under 10% and 1 GB of ram used), the CPU fan is really really strong spinning for a minute.

After that there is silence, a great silence... for 2 minutes. And then the whole process starts over and over again. Just cold air comes out.

It's make me crazy, that the CPU in the idle mode fan is stronger than my other Satellite A210 - 106 Turion X 2-52 L with full activity of the CPU. I wish to have a CPU fan that keeps spinning in a low sound.

Do you have ideas about how to control the fan?
Otherwise I try to replace it with another laptop (I hope they allow that, unfortunately, it is not an Internet shop where you can send it back up to 14 days)

    Kind regards
    Dieter

I managed it successfully using balanced power management and using battery optimized for cooling method option. This setting you will find, under advanced power settings > Toshiba Power Saver utility.

  • Re: Satellite A300 - fan does not work after installing Win7

    Hello.

I did a new install of Win 7 pro 64-bit, and after it does not my fan, not at the start or in Windows. To check if it the fan itself was broken I re-installed Vista instead and the fan worked again!
Installed new Win 7 but now it's silent :( I checked in the BIOS (latest version 1.80) but I couldn't find any option here. Am I missing a driver or something?

My Satellite canned extinguishing because of this, so I would really appreciate help :)

I m not quite sure if a remote control is available for your notebook series but if it s is available, so you could order on a local ASP (certified partner).
If this part is not in stock, then the guys would be able to order it directly from Toshiba.

    Hello

Toshiba does not provide support for linux at this time. There have been rumors that they would install Linux on their machines, but they have not been confirmed and I know: as long as they don t preinstall something on their laptop, they absolutely can't stand.

Usually, it shouldn't be a problem to install your graphics card under linux, according to which you´re use distribution you should check the appropriate forum (for example if you installed ubuntu, then check out the ubuntu forums..)
