Satellite A40-151: reader of CD/DVD IDE error #1

Hi I have a laptop Toshiba SA40-151 model no PSA40E-OCQ1E-EN.
Two problems really... at startup, it takes forever to the toshiba screen and then briefly displays ' IDE #1 error #, then seems to start... but the performance is slow.

Next problem, Cann access CD/DVD drive, wont even open the drawer and the drive does not show in my computer. The light is permanently on the drawer, but it works and works. Sometimes at startup until you can get the drawer to open it, but once closed and fully initialized you can not open it and it won't work. Any ideas?

Hello Paul

If you use option of advanced search on this forum, you will find many discussions about the IDE #1 error.

In any case, this error indicates that the drive of your laptop is not compatible and cannot be used. Because of this, she is not in Windows Explorer.

Good bye

    Hello

Well, the best way is to ask the service partner Toshiba for compatible readers and supported.
The fact is that if you buy a non compatible drive BIOS will not recognize this device.
I found some information on the internet and it seems these drives should work.
    Toshiba SD-R6112 DVD-R /-RW and Pioneer G8CC0001L810 DVD +-RW

But I'm sure that you'll get a drive compatible and right service in your country.

  • Satellite A40-151: how to enter the BIOS settings?

    Hello...

I'm on Toshiba Satellite A40-151 the DVD for this broken but this isn't worth it.
The problem is that I can't enter the setup (BIOS) to boot from a different boot device, or I do not now how to enter.

    Help, please

    thanx

    Hello

I think you have a Toshiba BIOS.
In this case you must press the ESC key immediately after the laptop has been powered. Try to press the button several times

By the way; You can also use the F12 key to get the boot menu.
Then you could easily choose your boot device
    This also works

    Good bye

  • How to change RAM on Satellite A40 - 151

My laptop Satellite A40-151 contains 256 MB of Ram with XP. It has become extremely slow because of microsoft recent service pack updates.

It is impossible to make this work more quickly.
Could someone please suggest me how can I move my ram to 1 GB. Is it supported to upgrade.

Please I guide me otherwise I can't use this system more.

    Hello

Yesterday, the same thing happened to me. Windows has received all MS patches and updates and the laptop everything was not more usable.
It was amazing, slow but after several hours, I managed to install all the updates and now everything works fine.

Laptop you can be upgraded up to 2GB. This is possible. If you want to use max 1 GB I recommend using 2 x 512 MB modules.
You use PC2100 200 pin memory (266 MHz) DDR SODIMM!

You will find the detailed description in your user manual I hope ;)

But I'll post here a small instruction:
The modules are hidden under the keyboard!

-Disconnect all cables and remove the battery
-Slide the latch of the screen at the front of the computer to the right and open the display panel
-Insert a thin object under the edge of the brace of keyboard and lift them from the orthosis
-remove the 2 screws of the keyboard and a screws of the metal structure and raise the metal structure
-Remove the keyboard carefully (the keyboard is connected to the card cable in water. Make sure you do not apply a voltage of this cable and do not attempt to unplug this cable!)
-lift in the sheet of insulation left on the memory module
-Insert a new module into the slot and gently push it downwards so that it lies flat and is fixed by two locks on each side.

    Good luck ;)

  • IDE #1 ERROR Satellite A40-151 - no upgrade of the dvd/cd player

    Hello
Yesterday, I was using my A40-151, as I do every day, and I noticed that I don't have a dvd player on my computer anymore. I opened the drive and put a cd inside. The player makes all the usual noise and then stopped, but there was still not a dvd drive on my computer icon.

I rebooted and noticed that the IDE #1 Error message appears at the top right of the screen on power upward. eventually the laptop just starts as normal, and all operations seem normal (touch wood!).

I have not upgraded / removed the drive. In fact I've never opened the laptop once and it was a year ago to upgrade the RAM.

I "googled" the problem, but I'm still no wiser despite a few threads on various reading forums.

I'd appreciate any help that my thesis is due soon and I need my car!

    See you soon
    Ant

    Hello

This error usually appears because of the evil master /slave on the STRANGE settings.
But in this case, the BIOS would not recognize the drive and it is not possible to boot from the CD/DVD-ROM.
So maybe the problem is related to another question.

I found this thread: seems to be useful for you

  • Satellite A40-151 started very slow and have hours to transfer a single file

    Hello.

I've had my A40-151 more than two years now, and up to last month, I got no problems at all. However, last month, it began to be very slow and took hours to initialize. I'm worried that I would lose all the data that I didn't back up, and so I bought an external drive to transfer data.

As I was doing this, my laptop started making grinding noises, and it took up to 12 hours to transfer a single file. I got to the place, I bought it, and they said it had crashed and that it was not something they could do other than get it back - and so I lost all my data.

When I came back, it was OK for a few hours and then started grinding again! And I think it might be something to do with the CD/DVD drive. I uninstalled the drive, and the squeaking seems to have stopped as long as the "drawer" player is open! Help, please!

How can I get the drive replaced? My laptop is no longer under warranty. No I lost everything this that data for nothing?

    Anyone have any ideas?

    Hello

No, the squeaking is probably from the reader of CD/DVD being dry, while optical rides on squeak track passing. But the long loading is certainly a hard drive problem. Looks like a head crash. The head is more or less what locates and reads/writes data from the HARD drive. When this plant it is unable to read/write/or locate the data on the surface taking more and more to save the data, transfer data and load the operating system. Two problems independent of each other. If your ASP cannot repair the cd that squeaks, then they can replace it one that works normally. I hope this has helped you.

  • Re: Satellite A40-151 - HARD drive replacement

    Hello

Following my previous thread (where the hard drive from the A40-151 has been slow and most later made a terrible noise and ultimately did not appear in the bios).

I would replace the drive. I went to the store today and the available drive capacity was well beyond the 30 GB Toshiba MK3021GAS unit. Started 80 GB up to 250 GB. I'm a little worried about the extra power, the speed, the conditions of heat and weather the BIOS recognizes it. Ideally, I would like to find a new MK3021GAS unit. The guy in the store seemed to think that it would be unlikely that someone would still do 30 GB (I guess than the IDE 2.5 "HDD) readers might therefore have to go down for a refurbished drive.

Are there specific readers (speed, capacity, etc.) that do not work with the laptop?

I'm suspicious to a repairer for Toshiba because the age of the laptop the labor costs can exceed the value of the laptop. However accept what are probably the only people to carry the part.

    Kind regards
    Ashley.

    Hey,.

You re right. Satellite A40 uses s HARD drive with older IDE interface. This means that you need a new 2.5 HDD with IDE interface.

As far as I know on the old IDE interface there is a limitation of LBA 28 bits and this means that the laptop can only manage hard disks up to 128 GB. So if you buy a larger HARD drive, you pay for the disk space you can use t.

So I recommend a 120 GB model or less. It should work properly! :)

  • Satellite A40 - cannot run on my DVD-Rom data DVDs

My DVD-Rom works CD leave good but I tried running Linux Fedora copied on DVD the DVD - Rom works forever unanswered and this problem remains before starting windows. I checked the DVD on other laptops, but it worked fine.
Is this a problem in my DVD lens? I'll try to clean it using cleaning CD.
Does anyone have any info on this problem?

    Hello

What type of DVD you are using?
There are different models of Satellite A40, but I guess that all use the same drive.
I checked the properties of the DVD player and according to this information, the Player supports these media:
    (Read/write) CD - R, CD - RW (read/re-write), CD-ROM, DVD - ROM, DVD-R (read only), DVD - RW (read only), DVD - RAM (read-only)

If you use the+ DVD so there could be a problem with reading.

  • Satellite A40-151: cannot install the site of Intel display driver

Try to update the display on the A40-151 driver. Have downloaded the latest driver from Intel, which States very useful ' you cannot install this driver, contact your provider "no more clues.

Toshiba site only seems to have the 6.13.10.3514 version which is the same as the one that came with the machine. I am so stuck with no upgrade possible?

The current driver seems not to be 100% compatible with Directx 9 .0c * sigh *.

    Hello

Which Intel graphics card has been installed on your laptop?
It's an Intel 852GME 16 to 64 MB shared memory graphics card?

I found friendly informative on the Intel page and it seems that the material of the graphics card does not support DirectX9, but only the DirextX7 and the DirecttX8

The graphics driver for the Intel page will not help you.
First of all you will not be able to install it because it s is not designed for the use of computer Toshiba laptop and secondly the hardware does not support.

But I give you advice if you are looking for an earlier version of the driver.
Some laptops use the same graphics card. Try to find the driver in series of various Notebooks with the same graphic card.
But the new facility is going to change anything. The DirectX 9 API is not supported

  • Satellite A40-151 recovery disk problem

    Hello

    I hope someone can help.

I bascially bought this new laptop altogether earlier and until recently he works very well, but a few weeks ago the hard drive, I think that then, it happened to the extent where everything would load and then the pc would lock or it would freeze on the windows loading screen.

Now, I did a little research and from what I could gather my HDD disappeared.

I then bought a new hard drive for this the same exactually that I had same model, same brand etc and even same GB, which is 30 GB.

I placed in the new hard drive and went to install windows xp on the recovery disks, but now I get a problem it starts and tries to install the os, but about 15% in the disc stops spining and I get an error 437 that the file cannot be run or something like that.

I did something wrong? do I need to buy a whole new operating system? I hope someone can help

    Thank you for your time

If you have purchased this Satellite as new and quite while ago why you pay money for new hardware? If one of the pieces of equipment is defective warranty will cover the costs of replacement.

As far as I know that satellite A40 is old enough laptop model, and I guess that it takes more than two years. Anyway, if possible try to install the OS by CD Microsoft facilities to determine if the OS facilities can be completed. Maybe faulty recovery CD is (some scratches).

  • Satellite A40-151 is very slow

    Hello

My friend has a laptop A40-151, which happened to be very slow with blue sceens of death, noisey and unit system returning to pio mode rather than ultra dma. We spread an infection by the virus and adware. I've had problems like this with all my last pc and it has always been the hard drive dying, or near death and it smells the same (saving). So yesterday, the laptop become very noisey which I suspected that the hard drive was probably to jam! However, xp blue screen referred to as core and memory dump. Could the CPU and memory also die? Maybe a fan is declining?

I got a processor celeron with video shared in the past and they were not fast in the best of cases.

    Kind regards

    Ashley

    Hello

It is best to check the computer step by step:

1 you said yesterday - the laptop became very noisy it may be because of the clogged cooling module that keeps the fan running hard. You need a jet of compressed air to blow the dust from the cooling fans. If you clean it well, but the noise persists, may be that the fan blades are broken (need to be replaced). The HARD disk can also made noise as it is old getting (replace) or need to be defragmented. You can download software Raxco Perfect disk to defragment, it's shareware but free for 1 month.
2 on blue screen Xp, you must reinstall Windows Xp and see what happens.
3 it can also be from material, if something serious, should contact ASP (SAV)

    welcome them
