Satellite A75 - config\system missing or damaged

A month ago I successfully restored all the settings from the factory with the recovery cd for my satellite A75.
Everything was working well until yesterday, I have received the \windows\system32\config\system missing or damaged.

My laptop can not read the cd factory restore.
What I do next. ?

Seems the CD/DVD drive cannot handle the recovery disk I m not very well why, but you can try to copy this disc (burn on another drive) and then try to use the copied disc in order to restore the operating system.

In many cases, this could help.

    If the system crashed, power lost, has been reset, power off, had an aborted restart, abnormal termination, etc. while XP is running, you may see messages like this.

    Despite what the message and Internet search engines to suggest for the error (such as Microsoft KB307545), the message does not necessarily that the registry is damaged.

    In fact, I've never found this is the case.  The real problem is usually XP could not find or read the file where it says to look for.

    The usual problem when meeting this message is that the file system is corrupted and just run chkdsk/r from the Recovery Console.  That will usually fix things well upward.

    It makes no sense to start to try to copy the files on a hard drive where the file system is damaged and if begin in this sense, you are probably in for one agonizing and frustrating waste of time for what is usually a very simple problem (how much time you have spent so far?).

    You can certainly find out other ideas!

    If you have found in the XP Recovery Console, you must run chkdsk /r first.

    When you start on the CD, follow the instructions:

    Press any key to boot from CD...

    Installing Windows... going to pronounce.

    Press 'R' to enter the Recovery Console.

    Select the installation that you want to access (usually 1: C:\WINDOWS)

    You may be asked to enter the password (usually empty).

    You should be in the folder C:\WINDOWS.  It's the same as the

    C:\Windows folder that you see in Solution Explorer.

    The Recovery Console allows base as file commands: copy, rename, replace, delete, chkdsk, fixboot, fixmbr, cd, etc.

    For a list of the commands in the Recovery Console, type help at the prompt of commands or read on here XP Recovery Console:

    I have a T400 who HAD an XP Pro operating system... Google chrome has frozen the system and I did a hard reboot and the computer had lost the configuration of the registry file. Microsoft recommends that the oem disc should be used, instead of a commercial version of the operating system. It's my DISLIKE for the purchase of a laptop computer with the OEM software, without a backup disk. If there is a problem, the manufacturer generally is going to drag you dry. I thought that this stratagem of Toshiba, but not of Lenovo. Hell, you can't even ask 'em to a disk if you are out of warranty. Stone wall. Why is it not possible to ask even an OEM Lenovo restore disk?     Hmmm usually after using the CD recovery Toshiba, everything should work ok.
    I read on some computer expert sites that this problem could be linked to the hardware failure. The HARD drive or the module memory is possibly corrupt.

    I would first recommend formatting the entire HARD drive (remove also all partitions).
    Install the operating system again.
    If it does not solve this problem you could check if it is possible to install from the original CD of Microsoft XP.
    Further, you can see the memory modules. Try to remove one and use only one or replace it with a new one.

    But please note that these are just my suggestions and I m not 100% sure if these proposals will allow you to solve problems. In any case it s worth a try

    You mean that you are not able to recover the laptop using the HDD recovery procedure?
    You can begin the HARD drive by pressing F8, choose fix my computer.
    Then a new window should appear and you could choose a new option called Toshiba HDD recovery.

    If this is not possible then I think that you don't have a choice but to reinstall the OS using a Setup (Microsoft or Toshiba) disk.

    the error message is basically stating that the registry is missing that could simply be the result of becoming not indexed by the mft.

    XP trying to tell you that it cannot find the file.  It is extremely likely that the hal.dll file is really missing or damaged (XP just cannot find it).

    You should not have the Windows XP installation CD for this problem.

    It is very unlikely that the manufacturer will be able to you provide a XP installation CD, but contact them if you wish.

    What would you do if YOU were the manufacturer?  Communicate with yourself?

    The instructions in this link to replace the hal.dll file are bad, bad, bad.  If you follow them, you will need to replace the hal.dll file, but it will not be the correct hal.dll file.  There are 7 possible hal.dlls on the Windows XP CD, and check out the generic hal.dll file won't be one you need unless you run a virtual machine.  Clearly, the technical support engineers have never actually solved this problem.

    Notice that the thread is not marked as 'response' by the original poster, but by a moderator of the Forum after a period of 5 to 10 days of inactivity where some MSE posted a link to a few articles in the KB (this is how things work here).

    You should start by making a bootable CD of XP (no XP media required) Recovery Console and run chkdsk /r first just to be sure of the file system NTFS is not damaged.  Then see if you can start after that (maybe it won't).

    THEN, you must use the Recovery Console to rebuild your boot.ini file.  I would like to rename the file c:\boot.ini first then you don't rebuild on top of the afflicted (this part is missing from the article).

    There is no Windows Vista downloads available from Microsoft.

    You can contact your computer manufacturer and ask them to send you a set of recovery disks.

    They should do this for a small fee.

    And if you have never received a recovery disk when you bought your computer, there should be a recovery Partition on the hard drive to reinstall Vista on how you purchased your computer.

    The recovery process can be started by pressing a particular combination of the key or keys at startup. (Power on / start)

    Maybe it's F10, F11, Alt + F10, etc., depending on the manufacturer.

    Ask them to the proper key sequence.

    You can also borrow and use a Microsoft Vista DVD, which contains the files for the different editions of Vista (Home Basic, Home Premium, Business and Ultimate) must be installed. The product key on your computer / Laptop box determines what Edition is installed.

    Other manufacturers recovery DVDs are should not be used for this purpose.

    And you need to know the version of 'bit' for Vista, as 32-bit and 64-bit editions come on different DVDs

    If none of these events occurred (or even if they have not taken place), you must verify the integrity of your file system before anything else (especially "try" things).

    There is zero logic to begin to try to begin to try to modify or copy files to a hard drive that has a corrupted file system, so this must first be fixed using the XP chkdsk program and run chkdsk on your hard drives may solve your problem completely.

    After the message preceding, we can access the window restore.  He gives us two options.  First of all, to save the files, what we do, and secondly to restore the HD.  When you start this process there is a warning that you restore it to its original settings, and that all files, applications, etc. added since then will be lost.

    Given that the backup files are on the hard drive, they will be not lost too?  Or are they stored in a separate partition which is not cleared?

    You must move the backup files to another (internal, external, or CD/DVD) storage device to ensure that they are not lost during the process of recvoery.

  • Windows system32\config\system file corrupt / missing

    I have Windows XP Home edition on my Sony Vaio. Cannot start Windows because I get a msg saying following file is damaged or missing windows system32\config\system
    Sony support suggested I start mode F8 and select know last good configuration. I tried and got a msg saying that Windows could not start because the following file is missing or damaged
    \SYSTEM32\NTOSKRNL.exe
    Sony support is now suggesting a full recovery, but I don't want to lose all my data!  Any suggestions on what I can do to fix it, but also, let me keep my data?  Thank you!!

    For your Windows CD, which would have been provided by the PC manufacturer.  Sometimes they have a partition on the hard disk that contains the recovery software and can be viewed during the start up.  You should check with the manufacturer of PC for more information about the recovery options.  Also if they did not provide a CD sometimes they offer the recovery media for sale.

    The problem here is that something has happened to the ntoskrnl.exe file.  It is difficult to replace just this file because the version that's on a CD may be different for the version that you had on your system.  If replace you it with another that it could potentially cause other problems.

    At this point, you will need to do a repair install or restore clean install\factory.  Mike - Engineer Support Microsoft Answers
