Satellite L40 - failure of BIOS

Guys,

I'm Ray of Indonesia. Satellite L40-A511 just bought a month ago but I noticed after correctly installing XP (and after partitioning hard drive with GParted), I can't use the key entry in digital mode. I am a translator of film and my software requires me to run it in Windows XP environment.

The key entry is vital (in digital mode) since I m using it much for tracking in the subtitles. Now after a while, the shortcut key for the volume was also malfunction. So, after reading some of the threads here, I conclude that maybe after the FN key BIOS update works perfectly. So I download the BIOS driver for XP to here and run the winflash.exe several times but nothing happens. So I run the .bat and it took the computer must be restarted. Then I press "F2" to the homescreen Toshiba, F9 and F10 to save the configuration. But, alas! I could not start Vista and Windows XP Home edition. The power is on, but it won't access the hard drive AT ALL!

I think I Jinx guys lappie. It's quite possible that I can not get my L40 back as it used to be?

Desperately,.
Ray

Hello

Really sounds like your machine was messed up in some circumstances hollow the BIOS update, but I can't say for sure. If I were you, I would immediately send the machine to a service center to repair your beautiful machine until it reaches the last day of the warranty period.

I guess you won´t be able to fix this problem yourself.

Welcome them
and good luck

    Toshiba Satellite L40-14B (catalogue number: PSL4CE - 004005G 3)

I got my laptop for Windows XP (from Vista) and I wanted to update BIOS version for XP Toshiba (5.50). I did everything right but still 2 seconds after you click the .bat file to start the process, Windows has interfered with a critical message and restart my computer.

It restarted, (*) entered 'Recovery of the ROM BIOS utility V1.16 crisis', a progress bar indicates that old bios was erased; After that an another progress bar indicating the flash process stopped after 2 seconds (1 cm); flash error message appeared; the utility tried to erase the BIOS (first step bar once again); clear the error message appeared. The post OFFICE will continue or something like that is displayed, and all is blocked and disabled. After a long time of prayer useless, I removed the battery of my laptop and moving forward again (voltage). And everything is identical (new) brand above (*).

It was a bit strange, especially since, after the reboot, I could access BIOS. No hard drive, the laptop closed in 3 seconds.

I analyzed the contents of the hard drive and found a new file, called T20. BIN (1 M - no doubt with the BIOS image) in C:\.

I think that when the laptop is turned on, it does not find the BIOS, it looks for image file of the BIOS in the root of the active partition on the hard drive, load it (T20. (BIN), begins 'The BIOS utility ROM V1.16 crisis recovery' and you know the rest

After loading the BIOS from the HARD drive and start rewriting, all frozen and I can't do anything: "Recovering the BIOS utility ROM V1.16 crisis" occurs during the POST and POST gel before closing, so I can't get to the point where I can start.

Meanwhile, I've changed the T20. BIN file with other bios (given by the Toshiba Site for Vista) and everything goes the same thing (with the difference that the BIOS for hard drive shows another version number).

I know that some laptops have a service procedure so that you can rewrite the BIOS after the crash. I tried different methods indicated on the forums for other L series, but nothing works.
I could t find the service manual for L40.
I found even when Maintenance manuals for other Toshiba models where are presented procedures for maintenance for the rewriting of the BIOS (usually using a diskette).
Didn t work for L40, floppy USB drive died before entering the BIOS and after that it's too late for me.

Any idea? (Not ASP. I hear good ideas).
Is someone a L40 manual or single BIOS rewrite maintenance procedures?

    Hi lonutS,

That s a pretty long story, but I think the case is clear: something was wrong because the BIOS update and now the ROM module has to be reflashed. Normally the BIOS will be updated in Windows and not after a reboot or something else so probably the ROM module is deleted now but no new version has been flashed.

    > Any idea? (Not ASP. I hear good ideas).
Is someone a L40 manual or single BIOS rewrite maintenance procedures?
Why not ASP? That's the best idea and may ask you what kind of response you expect? Here he s in only a forum from user to user, so no one here can give you the technical manual or a special BIOS recovery tool for this laptop. These utilities only have an ASP and Toshiba itself.

Here in the forum are similar topics on recovering the BIOS then perhaps you should read, but don t forget that everything happens on your own risk! If you have n t successful, I think that the only option is in contact with a ;) ASP.

  • Satellite L40 - 1.90 bios update has no effect on the reboot of Vista except

    Hello

We have a laptop L40 and very happy with it. There BIOS 1.60 and I want to update to 1.90. 32 - Vista Home Basic has been installed by default. He now has SP1.

When I unzip the package and run the bat file (that start with binary winflash), the 'dos' window opens and stays there for a while. Nothing happens and then the window closes and the system is restarted.

When I run just winflash, nothing happens. There is no dialogue or any other message.

    How is - a is updating the bios on the L40 - 14Y (PSL48E)?

    THX!

    DickS

    Hello

I'm really surprised, why you start the file beats if there is no exe file. Unzip all of the files on the desktop to the laptop and open the winflash.exe file, follow the instructions on the screen.
Make sure that the laptop is connected to the power supply current and NOT to interrupt by running the update of the BIOS.

  • Satellite L40 - 12K - BIOS update failure

    Hi people,

It is the second Toshiba laptop, I've managed to screw up. I don't know why, but it seems that Toshiba is especially prone to spectacular failure of BIOS.

This laptop (Satellite L40 - 12K, short model PSL40E) has a bios made by FRIEND and Toshiba has an update on its Web site for windows that uses the tool of WinFlash.exe made by ASUS.

The tool only works for 32-bit operating systems, and I had installed a 64-bit version of Windows, I could not pass the laptop.

Then I thought: we will try to update the bios from MS-DOS, using a bootable flash drive!

I went to the ASUS ftp site and downloaded the latest AFUDOS (2.41). This is a special version of the afudos FRIEND tool, specially designed for ASUS.

I ran the tool under MS-DOS, and it will make sure the BIOS automatically confirmed that the binary file was compatible with the laptop model and automatically starts the process of flashing.

But it crash in the phase of "flash erase". He was stuck there for HOURS, so I turned off the computer and tried to turn it back on.

Not at all, the laptop won't turn. It does not even ANY SOUND. NO LIGHTS, NO NOISE, NO FAN, NOTHING.

    ABSOLUTELY AND COMPLETELY DEAD.

So, there you have it. I have flashed dozens of computers (servers, laptops, workstations, etc.) in my life, and I've only had TWO failures.

TWO of them were with Toshiba laptops. Geez, Toshiba is really the King of the failures of BIOS flashing!

    Hello

I would never try update the Toshiba BIOS with a BIOS from other support pages for computer laptop manufacturer
What to say; I found one from Toshiba victory of the BIOS and traditional BIOS Toshiba U.S. driver page:

    http://www.CSD.Toshiba.com

Maybe you could try to Flash the BIOS using this version of BIOS
If this is not possible, then only a service provider authorized Toshiba would be able to help you.

By the way: I've had three different Toshiba notebooks: A210, U400, and now Tecra A11.
The BIOS update has worked perfect for all series...

  • Satellite L40 - 14 H - do not start after the successful BIOS update

    Hello

I have Satellite L40 - 14 H which was working fine until I thought to an update of the BIOS will not hurt. Seems I was wrong.

I downloaded the update to the BIOS, it unzipped in a folder and started the action.

After a few seconds was asked to wait, and then after few more firm.

After the reboot, I pressed F2 to enter the BIOS and check that it is version everything was fine, version 2.0 so was I left once the parameters.

    After that, nothing happened.

I almost tried everything without success. Removed the power and battery power, put their back, but still no start. Just the light of the HARD drive lights up for a few seconds and the cd turns a bit, but after that nothing happens at all and completely the screen is black.

I don't know anything else to try.

Please let me know what that can do to restore its functionality without taking it to the service, I can't do it.
I think that may not be cause of failure of the BIOS update I have seen it is the version and was right.
Is it possible to reset the BIOS? I need to disassemble the laptop to do this?
Let me know what to do, I have good experience in such things, but I can't understand this.

Thanks in advance for any response.

    Kind regards
    Stefan

    Hello

I agree with Akuma. It really isn't that you can do about it. BIOS problems are complex and cannot be set by the owner of the laptop. Believe me you need professional help with this.
Contact the closest Toshiba ASP and explain the situation.

  • Satellite L40 USB, wireless, modem, and its failure

I'm trying to solve a Toshiba Satellite L40 and ask yourself how I diagnose a hardware failure.
Problem is that the free wireless and sound had stopped working and it would freeze whenever a USB device has been inserted.

Decided to do the new install of XP, but it failed each time to 34 minutes.
I've suspected of hardware failure as well as a USB was curved touching another PIN to cause a short circuit.
Bent it back but install still failed at 34 minutes.

Remove the wireless card, always not so I removed the modem and it went through without error.
Installation of two causes fall in XP install.
Have installed all the latest drivers and even flashed the BIOS, however, still have the following problems:
Insertion of a USB device causes yet portable no freeze, no sound and wireless / modem not picked up by windows during the installation after the installation.

    Shows Device Manager:
1 exclamation point on "Microsoft UAA bus driver for High Def Audio"
2 "unknown device" in the USB controllers but not exclamation mark - peripheral USB not connected.

It is possible that the 'short' USB has damaged a controller on the motherboard is causing the failure of these devices?

    Any help would be appreciated

    > 1. Exclamation point on "Microsoft UAA bus driver for High Def Audio"
Win Xp requires the Sp2 and Sp3.
Patches are part of service packs and are necessary for its work.

    Here's an interesting thread:
    http://forums.computers.Toshiba-Europe.com/forums//thread.jspa?MessageID=101337

    > 2. "Unknown device" in USB controllers but no exclamation point - USB devices not plugged in.
The internal webcam is connected to the USB controller then perhaps, you add the webcam software.
Otherwise this could have something to do with the USB port defective

  • Problems of updating BIOS on Satellite L40 - 15G

    Good afternoon.

    I have Toshiba Satellite L40 - 15G and I want to put 4 GB of ram (2 x 2).
It works with 3 GB but with 4 GB it just does not start - gives me a blue screen.

I read on the internet and discovered that I have to update my BIOS (my version curent is 1.60).
I have vista 32 bit. I also tried to do the update via the site of toshiba, but without success.
I am running the .exe file, but when I restart the computer I have the same version.

    What should I do?

In the hope of a response.
    Pedro

    Hello

I think you are using an incorrect BIOS.
Satellite L40 - 15 G seems to belong to the series of PSL48E

    Check again!

Toshiba Europe page provides a BIOS 2, 00-VICTORY for Vista and WIN-5, 50 for Win XP

    Regarding the upgrade of memory:
I don't know if your laptop would be m supports 4 GB of RAM. Is that there are different models of L40 and some models supports only 2 GB of RAM!

Your L40 - 15 G seems to use the Mobile Intel GL960 Express Chipset...
Check out the details on the Intel page which RAM max can be managed by the Intel GL960 Express Chipset.

  • Satellite L40 - where can I find the previous BIOS?

    Where find/download BIOS previous/all for L40 PSL48E files?

    Hello

On the Toshiba site you can download the BIOS for Satellite L40 but it s only the most recent version.

I m wondering that you are looking for an older version of BIOS because normally the fix newest version bugs of old versions.
BIOS downgrade is possible for ASP s. Maybe you should contact them and ask. Maybe they can send you by Mail?

    Good bye

  • Satellite L40 - 13G: Bios update is not on Vista SP1

I have a Satellite L40 13 G and the latest Bios update refuse to update.

I'm trying to update my BIOS because the laptop freezes randomly in time and I have problems of "graphic design" where the lag games where there is no form of explosion such as gunshots or a bomb.

There are no instructions, not in the exe and certainly not on the screen. If I didn't know how Flash a BIOS I would certainly not choose the .bin BIOS file in the directory between all DLL files.

    Thank you
    Yahweh.

    Hello Jako

Can you please tell me what your problem is now? What questions are you writing about?
If I understand you well you have correctly updated the BIOS. Am I right about that?

And what now? What do you mean?

  • Satellite L40 (PSL48E) - is not restart after BIOS update

    Hello

My problem is that I have updated the BIOS and after that the machine does not restart. (Corrupt BIOS?)

After that the BIOS updated (Satellite L40 PSL48E), reboot the machine and with the F2 key, I open the BIOS setup.
I check the version of the BIOS (5.50) and complete the configuration of the BIOS. The machine must restart now...
Not at all, the machine does not restart. No screen only the powerled lights.

I can to fix it on my own as a BIOS reset?

    Thank you for the cooperation.

It's strange because after that the updated BIOS update you can go into the BIOS.

However, try to remove the battery and the AC adapter. Wait one hour and then put the battery back in and connect the AC adapter. Try again.

If it doesn't work it is something wrong with the hardware or BIOS and must be checked by a technician for laptop.

  • Satellite L40 - 14 d: can't update the BIOS

    Hello

    I have laptop Satellite L40 - 14 d.
Two months ago, I Flash my BIOS to version 5.40 successfully. But now, if I run updatebios.bat (5.50), the system will reboot, but after 1 second laptop each stop. We did update the BIOS. I tried many version of BIOS for my laptop, but without success.

    I have Windows XP installed.
PS: sorry for my bad English, I'm from the Czech Republic.
    Thanks for any response.

    Hello

    First of all I ve an interesting question;
Why do you want to update the BIOS? Various problems with the laptop?
Usually if the laptop run without problem then a BIOS update is not necessary

However, I downloaded the BIOS and first firs winflash.exe file package, I noticed!

First you must uncompress the BIOS correctly.
Then prepare the laptop for the update (AC adapter connected, don t run 3rd party applications and disconnect all external devices).
Finally, you must run the winflash.exe to start the update of the BIOS and NOT the .bat file!

    Good bye

  • The satellite L40 BIOS message

    Hello

I have a pretty annoying problem with my new laptop (Satellite L40 18W - model PSL4CE). Whenever I boot, I get

Same with BIOS 1.8 and 1.9 versions of kernel 2.6.24.2 and 2.6.25

Any way to solve this problem?

    Thank you!

If I understand correctly you have a PSL4CE model and that you also use the Vista. Am I wrong?

Did you choose the good BIOS series Sam L40 PSL4CE tree?

How have you tried to perform the update?

I see that you posted this in the field of Linux so perhaps you use Linux on your laptop?

Please note; the update of the BIOS can be performed only from the Microsoft System!
