  I don t think that the battery is empty. Your description does not sound like a battery problem.
  If the CMOS battery is empty then the laptop could start but only the date and the hour would set the default

  So I think that the problem could be linked to more than a motherboard on the question of CMOS battery problem
  I think we can discuss the anomaly and we say what part might be bad, but finally it would be only a hypothesis and won't really help to know exactly what's wrong.

  I have a problem with my old laptop M40.

  Last night it just turned out. First I thought it was overheated, as sometimes before, but until this morning, it won't start again. If I push the Start button it starts booting (I hear the HD) but only for 3 seconds, then there's no noise and nothing on the screen but still shines the light around the Start button. Weird.

  I tried to start without battery, only by cable, but that no longer works. Where ANY smell like something burned or so, I know not what happened. But I need my data.

  If you're lucky then spilt tea will only have caused a short-circuit in the keyboard itself and won't not flowed through to the motherboard. In this case, it would be possible to clean the keyboard or have it replaced by an authorized Service partner (to maintain the guarantee).

  I have a Satellite M40X-112 lapptop and I want to upgrade my 80 GB to 160 GB internal drive.
  How is know possible? (Toshiba hotline cannot give me an answer only that a 80 GB drive has been tried with these lapptop!). Anyone have experience with that?

  I read several statements here in the forum about HDD upgrade on the M40X and it seems that there is a limitation in the BIOS.

  I understand that very well the different titles of interface HARD drive confused most people me too in the past ;)

  Then I would try to clarify some things;
  There are two important differences between the interfaces of HDD; IDE (ATA, PATA and also known as EIDE) and SATA (SATA).

  ATA - 5, Ultra ATA/66 means Ultra DMA 3, 4 (44.4, 66.7) means UDMA/66
  ATA - 6 means that ultra ATA/100 that means UDMA 5 (100) means UDMA/100
  ATA - 7, Ultra-ATA/133 means that UDMA 6 (133) means UDMA/133

  and so now ;)

  Your laptop supports the drive HARD IDE (ATA-6) Enhanced interface and you must use the IDE HDD (NOT of SATA)

  I'm not sure on the size HARD disk max because Toshiba doesn't provide official information on the max supported drives hard but a 100 GB maybe 120 GB of HARD drive might be possible.

  As far as I know the Satellite M40X has a Phoenix BIOS.

  Phoenix BIOS, there is no code 1-1-1-1 (beep-beep-beep-beep).
  I think it is 1-1-2-1 or something else.
