Screen black with visible only mouse - SafeMode or normal won't start.

When I turn on my computer, all I get after the dell screen is a black screen with only the mouse visible. The mouse moves. I ran the diagnostic test Fn/F8 and everything comes back normal. I have the data I prefer not to lose. I tried normal and safe mode and all I get is the black screen.

Help!

Hi Arborne,

Are a. When you facing this problem?

B. recent changes made on your computer?

C. do you receive any error when starting?

I recommend these steps.

Step 1

Startup Repair is a Windows Vista recovery tool that can fix certain problems, such as system files missing or damaged that may prevent Windows from starting correctly. When you run the Startup Repair, it scans your computer for the problem and then tries to fix it so that your computer can start correctly.

1 boot from theDVD
2. Select the language
3. click on "repair your computer" on the install now screen
4. click Next in the System Recovery Options screen
5. click on Startup Repair
6 follow the instructions on the screen.

Restart the computer and see if you manage to boo on the desktop. If the problem persists, try Method 2.

See this link for more information.

If this step does not help then try step 2.

Step 2

Perform a system restore on your computer offline.

1 boot from the DVD
2. Select the language
3. click on "Repair your computer" on the install now screen
4. click Next in the System Recovery Options screen
5. click on system restore.
6. choose the date that you want to restore

    Hello

My laptop Windows 8 is a couple of months

Today, when I try to start it shows the splash screen and then the screen turns black with only the pointer of the mouse showing.

I can move the pointer on the screen, but windows does not load.

What happens if you go to the BIOS by pressing F2 while turning on the laptop?
You see the BIOS screen and all the BIOS settings?
Could connect you external monitor to the laptop just to check the 2nd display?

In which case it's just a software related issue, you should be possible to repair the system using the Toshiba HDD recovery or the Toshiba recovery disc.
Have you checked one of the procedures mentioned?

Check with Dell to see if there is a disc of diagnosis of material that you can download or order for your computer to test and see why it is not booting.  Also check the LEDs on the front that can display a code error, or for a series of beeps which may indicate an error code.
