Secondary partition of the same data store question

I currently trying to partition of one of my stores of data and perform in questions. I have a 2 TB data store, which first of all, I broke to 20 GB for my OS, so I want to use the remaining amount in storage. When I change the VM and add a secondary partition as a hard drive, it appears as a disk on the server. Is there something that I need to open I'm missing?

Once the data store is created you can not break. Is that what you have already installed your operating system on the 20 GB drive? You have changed the settings of the virtual machine to add the second hard drive? Once you have changed the settings of the machine virtual and added the hard drive, you should be able to start the virtual machine and the partition and format the disk storage within the operating system through the normal operating system disk tools.

  • ESXi 5.0 servers don't recognize that same NFS share to the same data store

I have a setup of vSphere 5.0 running VMware Workstation 8.  I have two ESXi servers that are accumulating the same NFS share (with the same IP address and the same directory path), but for some reason, they don't recognize it as the same data store.  I deleted and added to the data store again and checked that I am getting the same way on both nodes.  However, vSphere don't let me use the same name when I ride sharing NFS as a data store on the second node. vSphere changes the name of "NFSdatastore" to "NFSdatastore (1)" and will not let me change, say that the name already exists.

The NFS file server is a VM of 2.99 OpenFiler, which IP 192.168.0.100 (and is in DNS as "openfiler1").  The path is "/ mnt/vsphere/vcs/datastore.

The NFS mount works great as a data store on the two servers ESXi, except for the fact that vSphere sees two data stores.  I have a Red Hat VM running on each of them, and when I browse the data of each ESXi Server store, I can definitely see two configs VM, as well as a few ISO images that I put on the NFS share.  However, I can't vMotion as he complains about not being able to access the configuration file and the file virtual disk (vmdk) of the other node.

On the OpenFiler, the directory/mnt/vsphere/vcs/datastore is the property of "ofguest" in the "ofguest" group, and the permissions are "drwxrwsrwx +".  All files under the directory are also held by "ofguest" in the group "ofguest".  Vmx files have permissions "rwxr-xr-x + ', and the vmdk files have permissions ' rw +-

I did a lot of Google search, read best practices, etc.  Any help is appreciated.

  • Multiple ESX servers to access the same data store

We connect our ESX servers to an Equallogic SAN iSCSI using VMWare iSCSI card.   I have a data store that has ISO files to store.   So far, I can connect only this data to an ESX Server store on time.  I have to disconnect an and connect manually to the other.  We currently have a facility relatively bare bones (don't have vCenter again, grouping, etc.).

Is there anyway to connect the same data store to multiple ESX servers?  I tried to adjust the volume of Equallogic SAN for read only (since I just need to read ISO files), but I can't connect to ESX servers when I do this.

Remember that the volume is enabled for clustering.

From v4.x Equallogic firmware, there is an option advanced on each volume.

  • How to create LUNS target the same data store?

In vnx5100, we created two partitions (MON) to be shared separately with 2 VM machines for clustering

The question here is, that I have assigned the size of the LUN to a new data storage. And when I created ROW for a virtual machine, I had to choose the target LUN, but I wasn't able to see the unit number logic I'm looking for (the one that I have allocated for the storage of data, I created).

    The question here is:

Why the logic unit number assigned to the storage is not displayed in the list?

Do we need to create a LUN for the data store and a separate LUN target in Vsphere with the same size of the LUN in VNX?

What is the target LUN in VMware (vsphere client)?

    Kind regards

To a RDM and VMFS data store, you must create/submit two LUNS for ESXi hosts. What is stored on the VMFS data store is only the RDM mapping file (this will be created at the time wherever you add the raw LUN to a virtual machine), who shows up with the size of the RDM LUN, but requires no available disk space on the data (as a few bytes) store.

  • DTS moves to the same data store

    Greetings,

We are short v5.5u1 esxi and vcenter device with DTS clusters installation using thresholds to space only at this time. We do not limit our VM to place records on the same data and store, and in view of the virtual machine can have his records scattered across data warehouses in a cluster of the DS.

We have many events that seem to do nothing is represented below.  Everyone agrees that something actually happens or vcenter turns his wheels?

    Thank you

    Ron

Just answered my own question... it has to do with my scattered placement of vmdk. Since the vmx file lives on a given data store, the event shows that the activity... However if you check the DTS tab for the cluster data store you will find the disks associated with the virtual machine on other data warehouses were actually moved.

  • VM with disks of different data warehouses. Snapshots on the same data store?

    Hello

We have several virtual machines with disks on different data stores for reasons RAID.

Last night, we found that the snapshots of all disks are left on the data store main vmx and not on each datastore disk.

How will we change this as our OS data warehouses are small and run out of space when running shadow copies?

    Thank you

    Frogbeef

You can change the location of snapshots, but they will all go to this place - as far as I know, you cannot change the location of each disk.

The KB http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1002929 explains how to do this.

  • Deployment uses the local data store

The deployment of VIO works without problem, but one of the virtual machines (VIO-DB-0) is now in a local data store. I never chose this data store in the installation process.

Is it possible to manually move the virtual machine? Is it possible to define the data store used for the management of virtual machines somewhere?

    Concerning

    Daniel

    Hi Daniel,.

Take a look at VMware integrated OpenStack 1.0 Release Notes:

    • Installer gives priority to local storage by default
When you set up the data for the database stores three virtual machines, VMware OpenStack Setup integrated automatically gives priority to a local storage to improve IO performance. For resilience, users might prefer a shared storage, but the installer does not clear how to change this setting.
    • Workaround: Before completing the installation process, the installer of VMware OpenStack integrated allows you to examine and change the configuration. You can use this opportunity to change the configuration of the data to the database store three virtual machines.

If you have already installed VIO, AFAIR you should be able to manually move between data warehouses as long as you do not change VM itself.

Note that there is rule anti-affinite, so you may not be able to move that VM in the same data store when no other VIO - DB resides.

Another note is that if you turn off VIO-DB-0, mysql service will not appear automatically. you have to turn on manually by running "service mysql start" on the node itself, or run 'vioconfig start' of the SGD server.

  • Cloning of VM/TIME to the different data store

    Hi all

I am working out scripts excellent clone of Ruben garcia and one thing I'm trying to add is to have the VAPP created on a different data store.

    # Clone and move virtual machines
    {foreach ($vm to $vms)
    $vm = $vm | Get-opinion
    $vmname = $cloneName + "»" + $vm.name "
    . \LcloneVM $vm.name - cloneName '$vmname' - «$PortGroup» PortGroup
    Get-vm-name $vmname | Move-vm-destination $vapp;
The virtual machine are getting cloned and then inserted in the passed TIME as a parameter name, but I can't understand how do to have the VAPP will be created on a data store that I specify. At this time the vApp is created on the same data store where the linked clones. Can I travel after from the user interface by using the migrate command but I want if possible to automate it.
I thought that the next line should work but the VAPP fails when creating, so the move-vm command fails later.
    # Create VAPP
    $vapp = $host_name | VAPP-new-name "$cloneName" - data store "ThinDiskTesting"

I am at a loss to what im doing wrong

Post edited by: BrianRTS - difficulty of setting in the form

You can specify the data store where you want to create linked clone delta files.

This requires a slight modification to the script of Ruben

    # Generate specs for clone
    $cloneSpec = new-object Vmware.Vim.VirtualMachineCloneSpec $cloneSpec.Snapshot = $sourceVM.Snapshot.CurrentSnapshot $cloneSpec.Location = new-object Vmware.Vim.VirtualMachineRelocateSpec $cloneSpec.Location.DiskMoveType = [Vmware.Vim.VirtualMachineRelocateDiskMoveOptions]::createNewChildDiskBacking $cloneSpec.Location.Datastore = (Get-Datastore -Name $tgtDatastoreName).ExtensionData.MoRef

Ownership of the data store is used to indicate where the clone should be placed.

Or you want to create the clones, then move them?

  • Size = size of the VMFS data store VMDK?

Is it possible to create a single vmdk equal to the size of a vmfs data store he created in or is it a load element used by vCenter/ESXi.

I am using vSphere 4 and VMFS data warehouses are in format VMFS 3.33.

You can't if it is the main drive of a virtual machine and the virtual machine configuration files etc receive on the same data store as the virtual machine directly to the output that the bat will need extra space for a brief amount. For a data reader, this should be possible since there should not be any files will use the space.

  • Move-VM error: VM must be managed by the same VI servers as the destination data store

I work with 2 ESXi servers and a single vCenter server with vSphere 6.0 Update 1 b; and PowerCLI 6.0 Release 2

I have an a datacenter, cluster, vCenter and a vDS.  I need to pass the vCenter data store to another and get the error message:

"Move-VM VM you are moving should be handled by the same server of VI as the destination container and the data store.

    Code looks like the following:

    $vctObj = to connect-viserver $vctIPaddress

    $esx1Obj = to connect-viserver $esx1IPaddress

    $esx2Obj = to connect-viserver $esx2IPaddress

    $vmObj = get-vm-name $vmname - Server $vctObj

    $destDSobj = get-datastore-name $destDSname

    Move-vm - vm $vmObj Datastore - $destDSobj - 'End' DiskStorageFormat

I can migrate successfully from the virtual machine to vCenter data store through the VI Client, but PowerCLI left me speechless.

  • Question about the replica data store

I am set up a plan view and I can't find anything on the lines how much I should put on a data store. We have a pretty small environment with approximately 120 related clones.

Can I create pools of 5 to 10 for all use the same data replica store? I don't want to have all these little datastore who chew on the SAN iSCSI connections. It would be easier to have a data store that is easy to move all replicas.

    Thank you.

Yes, you can store several replicas to a data store.  It is often considered to be best practices in order to unload the aftershocks of a SSD data store.    I just would make sure that the data store can handle IO reading for all replicas.

  • ESXI 5.1 "the disc is not thin-provisioned" after copying to the new data store vmdk

I wanted to create an external backup as a 2nd VM ready-to-run on the 2nd data store.

I've removed all snapshots, stop the machine virtual and exported the OVF file to a computer, adjusted to the size of the original virtual machine starts in Gparted to update the partition and restart. All very well.

I then tried to deploy the OVF in the data store alternative (235GB slim, thickness according to the deployment of 250 Wizard). I tried both thick and thin but the error message "cannot deploy the OVF. The operation was cancelled by the user.

I then manually downloaded the VMDK & OVF file to the 2nd data store and tried to inflate but then received the message "a specified parameter was not correct. The disc isn't thin provisioned. ».

It seems I have dealing with the same thing, as this is the document here (http://pubs.vmware.com/Release_Notes/en/vsphere/55/vsphere-vcenter-server-55u3-release-notes.html).  However, I have no idea what to do now... and I'm worried because it seems that my backup plan may not work if I can't restore an OVF/VMDK from a disk of visas.

The solution to the first problem here: https://communities.vmware.com/message/2172950#2172950 that solved my problem 2nd too.

  • After the migration of ESXi 4.1 to 5.0 Update 1, ESXi containing the missing data store

I intend to upgrade to an ESXi 4.1 production host, but I want to run through an upgrade of test on a separate machine. I created this using a virtual machine and the upgrade went well. However, now when I insert my vSphere client, I don't see the data store that contains data to my VM.

Before migrating to 5, I had 2 drives, a disk of 4 GB for ESXi, and a 40 GB drive for the data of the VM installation. I could see and access times stores via the 4.1 vSphere client, but once the upgrade only the VM data store is available. Is there a reason that this is the case?

I've updated but has not changed the partitions of data store. I have selected to migrate and keep the VMFS store, which was VMFS-3. I also tried to add the store drive 4 GB with the customer data, but an error message: "the selected disk already has a vmfs data store or the host cannot perform a conversion of partition table.
    Select another disk.

I found this article on error message: http://KB.VMware.com/kb/2000454 , but I never actually removed from the data store. With the help of the 5.0 ESXi update I can see the VMFS store on 4 GB drive, which should have about 3.2 GB of available disk space (the rest being used by the hypervisor).

Recommended someone else try esxconfig-volume - the list, and then use the output to a mount (http://communities.vmware.com/message/1666168#1666168), but the list command had no output at all.

I searched through the forums and Google but you saw nothing.

ESXi 5 has a different architecture, and I think that the problem is the size of the disk (too small) and the partition of scratch required.
