Securely erase SSD using Filevault

I am about to sell my MBP of 2009 with a 1 TB SSD.  I know that I can securely erase the drive as a traditional mechanical flat disc and if recommended someone following that sounds quite secured using filevault.  I'm aware that it can take a while to do but I am not hurry and eager to go through the process if indeed offers an additional layer of security if someone decides to hack.  I would that all expert opinion on it given that I don't consider myself a genius of Apple, or a guru on the SSD technology and encryption:

1 turn on Filevault and implement a complex password of decription. (Note that it may take hours to encrypt the drive)

2. once the drive is encrypted, start in recovery mode and erase the drive.

3 reinstall the operating system and then turn on Filevault with a different password. (Shouldn't take as long to encrypt because there is very little data)

4. boot into recovery mode, once more and wipe the drive.

5 reinstall the operating system.

Theoretically, all the old original data are an encrypted mess.  Also, the first Filevault password was erased and encrypted after the second installation of the OS.

Probably no reason to go beyond 2 except to the reinstall the OS.

    Hello TaxiFish,

You must encrypt the drive with FileVault first. Then just delete. Apple now uses SSDS in most of their machines and these drives don't support secure erase.

  • I need secure erase for PX3012E-1HJ0 SSHD

Sorry for posting my question here, but the Forum gives me '403 response Code' when I try to create a new thread, despite I have all the necessary rights

Nice day! I bought two hybrid hard disks SSHD PX3012E-1HJ0 - http://www.toshiba.co.uk/hard-drives.../px3012e-1hj0/
After some time of use I would sell a PX3012E-1HJ0 hybrid propulsion system to other people. But this is a problem: I have worked with important financial documents on this drive, so I need to ensure erase everything on the drive before selling. Of course, I know how to secure erase 1 TB main "Memory disk" of this hybrid propulsion system. But I don't know how to clear the cache of its ' 8 GB NAND "Memory SSD"

Site Web de Toshiba tells that 8 GB memory NAND of player in SSHD retain frequently used data to self-learning algorithm of cache - http://toshiba.semicon-storage.com/e...q/storage.html

I'm worried that there could be a cache of my important documents inside this 'SSD memory' so someone could use engineering tools for the extraction of my documents directly from him. I would like to secure erase or reset this cache, to return the SSHD command to his "immaculate condition retail

Please tell me, how secure erase or reset the cache that is inside of 8 GB of memory NAND?

As far as I know that Toshiba provides no special tools to perform these secure data erasure, but I recommend you to check the 3rd parts software called "Parted Magic".

Parted Magic contains small tools such as Partition Image, TestDisk, parted, fdisk, sfdisk and ddrescue
Just burn to a cable USB thumb drive (or CD), start on the USB, and once you get on the desktop, check the icon marked "erase the drive.

Secure erase will return you an SSD for empty, fresh-out-of-the-box condition.

    > I have 2 years Toshiba laptop with a HARD drive. I want to improve its performance. I need help on this.
I have 5 years Toshiba laptop and I had the same plan. I've swapped original HDD with SSD and upgraded RAM to the maximum level (8GB). After doing this I installed the original recovery image and optimized it preinstalled version of Windows.

The difference is simply amazing. For example, start Windows went from 2 minutes 30 seconds. I think I don't need to write more info on laptop's performance now.

SSD and RAM upgrades can be done in most cases, by the owner of the laptop and without any risk.

If you need some good advice do not hesitate to ask.

  • X 301 secure Erase with new BIOS

    Hello

I went to an X 18 - M Intel SSD on my X 301 some time ago. I noticed that the new BIOS has been released with the Secure Erase feature some time ago. As I was going to rebuild my laptop today, I thought I would give it a go. It turns out that it was a mistake. The utility has failed on the Intel SSD, requiring a reboot after operating for six hours. After the reboot, it turns out that the utility took a hard disk the disk password (it wasn't one of front). Since I have no way of knowing what password it has set, I'm actually locked out of my drive and it's a brick for all purposes useful.

Is anyone (Lenovo in particular) know what password is set during execution of the Secure Erase of the latest version of the BIOS feature? My only alternative is to know if there is a default master password from Intel. Since in principle, this should be empty, I think I'm scuppered unless someone in Lenovo can tell me what password they defined using the utility.

    Thanks in advance.

    I have HP probook 4530 s ci5

have a 750 GB hard drive (HDD) drive.

    Hard drive is Hitachi (HTS727575A9E364)

I need my laptop to someone for a few days, so I need to make sure that my data is definitely missing.

I can use the disk Sanitizer or present secure erase option in the BIOS. But I don't know how long it will take?

Can someone please tell me which disk-disinfectant time and secure erase option will take to a passage?

    Hi all

I just went ahead and did it. So for other people like me looking for the answer to this question, I will share my experience.

When I clicked on the option of disk Sanitizer, he gave me several choices like, 1 pass, optimum, gutmen and custom. I chose optimum, it is has had warned only that data will be permanently erased, there was no estimate of the time, I had to do, I did. After 22-23 hours of waiting, he did. And the optimum had 6 cycles of option. He showed the result below.

  • Z10 Z10 blackBerry does not start since then try a secure erase

I had problems where none of my text messages have been moved during the previous Blackberry, such as reported earlier today. I was also disappointed by the speed of handset, BBM for example would take at least 5 seconds to load (now on my old torch), so I made a secure erase so I could try the installation again. This seems to have been a mistake, as the handset now does not start. I see "Blackberry" appear for a second, then get a logo that seems to be asking me to connect the unit to a PC. It does nothing - the PC does even not record that a device has been plugged in. After a minute or so, the screen fades and the handset appears just to turn off. I'm very disappointed in my first day with the handset - far from a smooth experience as it should be, I was left the impression that OS10 is still in early beta development.

What can I do to remedy this?

    kb33480 should help you.

  • How can I clean install Win 7 Pro on a series of 330 intel SSD using a Sony Vaio laptop as the source. I have the original disc and the authorization only

My Office HARD drive had a fatal accident and poster now under vacuum. It was a disk of 1 TB with Win 7 Pro upgrade to Win 8 Pro.I have records of origin 32 and 64 bit OS and wish to install the OS on a SSD using the optical drive on my Sony Vaio, which will become then the boot drive in my office.

    [Moved from comments]

You must do the installation on the desktop. You can not install windows on the disk into a computer and then move the disk to another computer and do work. When installation is complete, it reads information from the BIOS of the computer, on which it is installed and when you put the disc in another computer that Windows does not find the information used during the installation.

You will need to put the new drive in the desktop, install Windows 7 on it, then upgrade to Windows 7 to Windows 8 again.

  • SSD Secure erase - suspended - now drive not found

I wanted to clear my SSD so, with connected to a free usb port, I started a deletion secure 3-pass (as I continue to read the system will not let you do with an SSD, but he did. I also realize that it is not necessary, do not need to hear about it at this stage). The first change took about 8 hours so as soon as the second pass I force quit the disk utility (and received no warning about this procedure). Now the drive no longer shows. I rebooted, I tried a new usb port, but still no sign of the SSD. I've read about other people having the same problem but not yet seen any solution. I don't think it is defective somehow, as this seems to happen to others who is leaving the delete in sequence mid process. Where at - it go? Thank you! ~

Have you tried to boot in Recovery HD (command-R) and using disk utility it?

Have you tried to use the commands to command line Terminal and diskutil ? Diskutil list to see if it shows up. Then you can use diskutil command to repartition/format it.

Otherwise, 3rd utilities like Disk Warrior and Drive Genius 4 might work. I know that the Drive Genius 4 trial version will not repair issues. It will show you only the questions. I've never used Disk Warrior, so I don't know about that one.

  • "Secure Erase fresh space failed - could not create temporary file ' error message - help!

I have an iMac 10.9.5, and I get the following error message when you delete the free space using disk utility: "erase secure, free space failed...". Failed to create temporary files. "Because the program had worked for about 2 hours before the error message appears, I wonder if at least some of the empty space was in fact deleted.  All comments or suggestions would be welcome. Thank you!

The process creates a temporary file in which all deleted files are archived until completion. The error means generally that you had ran out of disk space or the temp folder is corrupted.

Why are you doing this? It's a waste of time beast not to mention the risk of damaging the entire disk. Finally, he was abducted as a system with the release of El Capitan option.

  • Secure erasing files - at the vmdk level?

    Hi all

We are implementing a corporate secure deletion policy by which our support staff will use a Windows tool that supports at least US DOD 5200, 28 - STD file deletion (all reasonably simple), but he was asked if the erasure spreads through to the underlying disk to VMware and if so, is the data stored in the disk correctly deleted also?

Our file servers are W2K3 and have HBA connections with our without.  VMWare "disks" are stored in hard (s) on the SAN.

Your comments and advice are appreciated.

    LEA

    Hello

Moved to forum security and compliance.

If your VMDK is stored on a storage that does not "copy-on-write", then it is possible to run a wipe program DoD disk in the virtual machine to zero level the VMDK. However, this may not work if you do not fully understand the underlying storage.

For linked clones, this will erase the link but will not erase the captain VMDK. Or this will remove any file .vswp, .vmsn, or .vmss files. These have images memory and therefore should also be properly deleted. If its not simple to delete a virtual machine to the DoD standards. Data disc are fine but the memory data is a little more difficult.

  • Satellite U940 - 11 d - 32 GB mSATA SSD use

    Hello world

I bought the week last Toshiba U940 - 11 d and I would replace the drive HARD 750 GB with 120 GB SSD. I have a question. I would like to install Windows 8 in SSD 120 GB drive and use another DDD which is mSATA for swap or my documents. Is this possible?

What can I do for my application? Can I use 32 GB mSATA as normal SSD SSD or I can use only to the cache?

    Best regards.

    > I have a question. I would like to install Windows 8 in SSD 120 GB drive and use another DDD which is mSATA for swap or my documents. Is this possible?

It would be possible if the system of Windows 8 would recognize the mSATA 32 GB as an additional drive. I m not 100% sure of this, but I guess only in case this is not possible, you could use this drive for caching mSATA SSD.

  • Satellite C660D-178 file system fail to SSD using Linux

    Hello

I have a reproduction of corruption of file system behavior when you use C660D with disk SSD Kingston SV100S2.

The level of corruption varies from corruption of the file system individual nodes to complete data loss (no data can be read by testdisk).
Problem always happen after the restart, not very often, about once in about 2 weeks.
File system failures produce both after reboot normal and have to reboot (power button).
    Issue took place in 15 Fedora and Ubuntu 11.10 beta1 amd64 x86_64.

I wonder if it could be a hardware or software problem.
Same SSD worked without any problem in another laptop.

    Thank you
    D.

    Hello

    > I wonder if it could be a hardware or software problem.

As much as I know the laptop was not equipped with a SSD drive but common SATA HDD.
Have you noticed that using an old HDD SATA?
What about the use of Win 7 on this SSD drive? Is it OK?

To my knowledge, some manufacturers of SSDS offer an update of firmware for own products, maybe you should look for this update.
