Security Update for SQL Service 2005 Service Pack 3 KB2494113
I did my regular updates but the SQL Service 2005 Service Pack 3 KB2494113 security update will not be installed. I am running Windows XP. I even tried to download it from the Windows Update Web site and install from there. However, without success. Had an error fix. Why this will not install? I have the same problem on my home computer I run Windows XP. There must be something wrong with this update! ??? Any suggestions

I use Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 3.
Here is a link to a thread on the MSDN forums dealing with this problem and a possible solution. Thread Also, if you run law or another program directly using SQL, you can try to uninstall the program, run the update, then reinstall the program. If you have tried only to install this through Windows Update you can want to download it and run it directly from your desktop.

Problems installing updates for xp service pack 2
I am not able to install xp sp2 on my computer. I have xp home edition, version 5.1 and is running xp sp1. After the update download I get an error message saying it could not read the files (or something like that), I tried to run the update from windows update and the site Ms... or install it. I also followed the instructions on the tech support site where he suggested I had a few missing files... did and does still not can not... someone please help me... I really need this patch because I can not download any current software without the sp2 of xp... Thank you!
You need to start from the square.
Personal data backup (which none should be considered 100% reliable at this point) then format the HARD disk and do a clean install of Windows. Please note that a repair installation (upgrade AKA on-site) will NOT fix it!
HOW to do a clean install of Windows XP: see method 1 and http://michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html#steps in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/978307
Once installed the clean, you will have the equivalent of a "new computer" in order to take care of everything on the next page before connecting the machine to the internet or a local network (i.e. other computers) and before using a USB or SD card that is not brand new, or has not been freshly formattedotherwise:

NB: No matter what Norton or McAfee free trial which is preinstalled on the computer when you bought will be reinstalled (but invalid) when Windows is reinstalled. You MUST uninstall the trial for free and download/run the appropriate removal tool before installing updates, Service Packs Windows or IE upgrades and before installing your new anti-virus application (which will require WinXP SP3 must be installed).

NOTE: do NOT connect the computer to the internet until you got installed SP3 and make sure that the Windows Firewall is enabled! Use another computer to download the appropriate removal tool as well as programs for Service Packs of Windows XP installation, you will need.

Hello
Click Start > right click on computer > left click on properties > see if you have Vista 32 bit or Vista 64-bit installed.
It will also tell you which SP you have installed.
Then, choose the download of 'bit' OK to use to install Service Packs, installation of SP1 first if it is not already installed.
Vista SP1 32-bit (x 86): http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=30

I have Dell Dimension 8100 with Windows XP Home Edition that has Visual Studio 2005 Express installed that has SQL Server 2005 with her. I had a problem with Windows Update and will prompt to install SQL Server 2005 SP3 KB970892 since October 14,2009. I've uninstalled and reinstalled everything first and always kept getting the prompt, then I tried another solution that I got from a forum of symantec. I uninstalled the update again, and then I went into the registry to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\Resume REG_DWORD and changed the value decimal from 1 to 0, installed the update and restarted the machine. It worked for the person who posted, but this has not worked for me. I waited a while hoping that Microsoft will come out with a fix for the next monthly update that has not yet happened. If anyone has a solution, please send an email to
