Select some easy transfer files

Well, I lost a bit of data when I updated from XP to Vista, mainly because of Windows Easy Transfer, and I was wondering if there was a way I could choose some files to take of it and where to save them (namely, program files, specifically a few files in program files).

Whenever I try to deselect the files to restore, it won't let me, and I see no option if I want to save the files in a separate location.

Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Also, if I were to use one, a third-party program to me would be against microsoft TOS?

Programs need to be reinstalled.

Windows Easy Transfer copied the files from the old computer to the new.  There is no way to reverse the process.  Just remove the Windows Easy Transfer files where to put.  For more information, clickStart >all programs > Accessories >System Tools > Windows Easy Transfer reports .

If this does not help, please tell us exactly what are the files that you want to remove.

  • Using Easy Transfer of Win 7 PC to another Win 7 PC with 1 single monitor

How to make the transfer with 1 single monitor?  If I can do it with 1 monitor PC must be connected to the monitor? Or what I have to go back between the 2 PC's? Thank you. (Stupid question, I guess, but I need some advice).

    Hi Harry,.

Yes, you can use a system image to transfer the data.

However, Windows Easy Transfer is a software assistant to transfer files and settings from one computer running Windows to another. You can transfer data from one user or multiple user accounts profile. Easy transfer Windows application will help you choose what to move to your new computer, you can set the transfer method to use and then performs the transfer. Once the transfer is done, Windows easy transfer reports displays what was transferred and provides a list of programs that you can install on your new computer, as well as links to other programs you can download.

With Windows Easy Transfer, files and settings can be transferred using a network, a flashdrive USB (UFD), or the easy transfer cable. However, you cannot use a regular universal serial (USB) bus cable to transfer files and settings using Windows Easy Transfer. You can buy a cable to transfer files on the Web, the manufacturer of your computer, or at an electronics store.
    noteNote
You can't use Windows Easy Transfer to move program files. Windows Easy Transfer can move only data and program settings. You must then install your software on the new computer.

Windows Easy Transfer, also, does not transfer any system files such as fonts and drivers. To do this, you must install custom and updated fonts to update drivers in Windows 7.

Use the Microsoft Windows User State Migration Tool (USMT) 4.0 to automate migration during large deployments of the Windows 7 operating system. • Having problems with Windows Easy Transfer

I just bought a Dell laptop with W7 installed. It's all very well except the transfer of files/settings. I started the easy transfer and selected the option of wireless transfer. My old machine will connect to our router via a map of 54 Mbps and the new machine will connect to the router via a 24 GHz 802.11n built in the card. When all the files have been selected, they added up to 5.2 GB. I started the transfer, and it worked for 36 hours. For the last 6 hours, transfer screen said 1 minute left. Since the said warning do not use the computer that I don't know what to do. Is it possible to see if Easy Transfer is hung up? If it is blocked, how can it be restarted?

    Tahnks for your help!

Wireless? Windows Easy Transfer is not something you do on a wireless connection. Use a wired connection, or create a .mig (Windows Easy Transfer file), save on an external hard drive or locally and transfer it to a new computer.

install Windows 7 Windows Easy Transfer Utility from the DVD on the old computer (to find it, simply navigate to x:\support\migwiz, "x:" is the name of your hard drive. (In this case, you will see a collection of files, the important"that you must search for and double-click is 'migsetup'.) or download it at (windows.microsoft.com/windows-easy-transfer).  run it and create a WET (Windows Easy Transfer file), if you have an external hard drive, you can have it stored there.

You should be able to easily restore these files if they were created using Windows Easy Transfer in Windows Vista. Simply click Start, type: easy Windows press enter on your keyboard

Follow the wizard screen, select the type of support that you restore your files, select the computer that you restore, navigate to its location, select the file .mig Windows Easy Transfer and click on restore.

The Windows Easy Transfer Wizard, then analyze the content of the files and ask you what you want to restore if multiple accounts have also been supported.

Once you have confirmed that you want to restore, click transfer to begin the restore process, after it is complete, the wizard will propose programs, you need to reinstall, and a list of what it has been transferred, you will be asked to restart your system to apply permanently changes. Transfer files and settings with Windows Easy Transfer in Windows 8

Windows easy transfer supports several methods to transfer your files and settings.
You can use Windows easy transfer to transfer information to a computer running Windows 8 computers with one of the following operating systems:

      Hi TerryEdlin,

      ·         How did you backup the data from the computer Windows 7 hard disk?

      ·         Did you use backup and restore to backup the data?

If you used Windows Easy Transfer to save the data, then you can download the simple transfer for Windows XP from the following link for the transfer of drive to the Windows XP computer.

    • Transfer files to the computer after the installation of Windows 7

I recently installed Windows 7 Home Premium (32 bit) to replace Windows Vista Home Premium (32 bit). I ran the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor and no problems were detected. Before I installed Windows 7 I downloaded Windows Easy Transfer and he ran with the file to be saved on an external hard drive. I managed to install Windows 7 but I can't transfer the Windows easy transfer file to Windows 7. I get a message saying there is not enough free space on the disk to do the transfer. I ran disk cleanup, and I still get the same message. I have 268 GB of 287 GB free space on the C: drive. The Windows Easy Transfer file (currently on the external hard drive) is only 113.5 GB. I don't know why I get the message that there is not enough free disk space when there is obviously.

Before you read this response to my question, I discovered that, in the file transfer Windows on the external drive under 'Advanced Options' disks 'map', there was a drive "C" and "D" of road listed. As soon as I changed both to the 'C' drive, the transfer went without a hitch. Thank you very much for your help, your suggestions are very helpful. I have a partition "C" and "D" on my computer, how do I know if Windows 7 has been loaded on the 'C' partition or partition "D"? Thank you

    • easy transfer can be used to reload the data files after formatting hard drive?

I have been informed by level microsoft 2 I have to reformat my hard drive to fix the problem with windows backup (snapshot won't work).  easy transfer will copy all THE data files, including OUTLOOK 2007 on hard drive and then I can reinstall on reformatted drive.

Easy transfer copy some things but not all things. He does more that can make a simple copy/paste (such as the settings for example) but, for example, not programs transfer (those who need to be put back in place).  Here is a description of what it does (and does not): http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928635.  It will transfer Outlook 2007 PDF files and other personal data if they are selected - you need to know which files you need and where to select them - but it won't transfer the program (which must be put back in place).  It must be run before you reformat the hard disk to collect data and then you can transfer everything what you have registered once the system is re-installled.  You would do the re-setup prior to the transfer.

      I hope this helps.

      Good luck!
