I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 with Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit Edition installed, and in January he ceased to apply the updates of Windows security.  I tried to solve this problem, but eventually gave up and reinstalled windows (gasp!).

Well, the drive I got for the machine was 2008, so he installed Windows Vista SP1.  I then applied a bunch of updates (via Windows Update) until I came to KB 979911, when it is not (always) with error 80073712.

I did a SFC/scannow, but there are no errors.  I then installed the Microsoft Fix it Center and installed Windows Update Fixer.  Whenever I run this from I get Windows Update components detected problems must be repaired - and the result is successful in repairing the Windows Update components.  I also get the default data location Windows Update question changed - (verified result) and the comment "where Windows Update stores modified data must be repaired.  I doesn't matter if I know.

I also see locations of repair by default Windows Update - works not (I don't know how to run) and a comment to the locations of Windows Update change to the default settings of Windows (I don't know how do either).

I then run KB947821 (CheckSUR) to check the status of preparation of system.  and get several registry errors 2 of each of the components and missing packets related to Package_20_for_KB937286 in the Microsft_Windows_Help_CoreClientUAHP-Pachage (and the corresponding notice of UAUE) as well as the x86_microsoft-windows-help - artcone.resources and the related medctr.resources.

Then... I try to install SP2 (which is now coming through my Windows Update and it of fine, restarts the machine, staging 3 100% and then comes back, restarts and continues the reversion.)  He returned in the form 800f082c of the error.  Installation via the stand-alone stub leads to the same result.

FYI... I have run diagnostics on hardware and all is well.  I'm at my wits end here, so any help is appreciated.
