Set password Linux ATA hard drive / Toshiba Satellite Pro U200
Sorry for the long post, but I want to be as specific as possible:
1)
I use a Toshiba Satellite Pro U200 under Linux (OpenSUSE) for some years now. Works fine without problems so far, even the fingerprint reader works. I deleted and never used the Windows XP preinstalled.
For security reasons, I have now decided to put a HDD ATA password, in case the laptop is lost or stolen (changed drive for a disk Seagate Momentus 7200 FDE.2 SATA II with full encryption of the disk material).
In order to get the protection offered by the full disk encryption, I need to set a password for the ATA. During startup, the Bios must request the password and unlock the drive only when the password is correct.
2)
My problem is: in the Toshiba laptop it is impossible to set the hard drive ATA password directly in the bios (as is possible in HP laptops, for example). Toshiba there is only one way to set the password to disk, which is a software utility for Windows XP (named 'Assist'). But I don't want to change the operating system only to set this password.
3)
Therefore, I tried the linux instructions
hdparm - user-master m - security-all-pass SecretMasterPassword/dev/sda
hdparm - user-master u - security-all-pass SecretUserPassword/dev/sda
which are used for adjustment ATA passwords. Indeed, at first, it seems to work very well. The password is set and the drive is locked.
4)
When I restart the laptop, the Bios the HDD password request, as it should do.
But he does not accept the SecretUserPassword prior to seizure. The answer is "wrong password", or similar.
5)
Analysis:
I have no doubt that the password has been set correctly: I checked by restarting the laptop through rescue DVD in linux and unlock the disc via
hdparm - user-master u - safety - unlock SecretUserPassword/dev/sda
in order to use it. No problem, it works as supposed to. After the release, the disc is usable as usual. And I can also disable the password via
hdparm - user-master u - security - disable SecretUserPassword/dev/sda
After you disable the password, the laptop starts normally again, but I have no password.
When I re-enable the password bios Toshiba again asks the password during initialization, but does not accept the (correct) password on entry.
6)
Does anyone have an explanation for this behavior?
Bios Toshiba has somehow changes the password entered by the user, before being sent to the disk? I think that this would be inconsistent with the ATA standard.
Anyone managed to set/change the password to ATA in a way that the disc can be unlocked via the internal order of the Bios, without installation of Windows XP and the Toshiba Software 'Assist '?
Thanks for reading this long post so far. Any response is welcome.

Graphic driver on Satellite Pro U200 (Vista Business 32 bit CZECH)
I have two problems with my gfx driver.
(1) for the recovery of the mode standby, the screen goes to 1024 x 768 instead of going back to 1280 x 800
(2) for playback of Lineage 2, the game crashes to the desktop and I get the error message "display driver igfx stopped responding and was recovered. After Googling a bit, I found a new display driver for my Intel 945GM Express would solve the problem. So I downloaded the correct driver from intel.com but I can't install it. I get an error message saying "driver is not verified for this computer. Ask the manufacturer of the computer for the correct driver. So I went to the toshiba site and I downloaded the driver appropriate to go there (well, toshiba.com is not the last, intel.com has a more recent version). But when I tried to install it, I got the message that my computer does not meet the minimum requirements for installation! What does that mean?! I have read the readme file and my laptop has certainly meets the requirements, in addition to the driver, I downloaded to work for Satellite Pro U200, because I have entered all the necessary information to download the driver. If can please someone solve my problem? And if not, is it a toshiba support hotline or something where I can call?
Yes, I agree entirely with snipe. In such situations, I do the following:
Backup of my data-> recover my machine-> install the latest drivers and software including all the tools-> see what happens ;)
And then work with the machine...I like computer systems...: D
See you soon

Install the new hard drive on Satellite Pro 6100
Hello
I have the Satellite Pro 6100 and the hard drive has failed. Bought a new hard drive but have no idea where to begin to install it. Also, I have the product key for windows xp pro, but don't have a disc. Is there a way to get around get one, or someone has any ideas please?
Thank you
Michelle
Hmmmm... It's very strange that you n t have idea how to start. Throughout history, there are only two options:
-for the installation of an operating system you can use the original Toshiba Recovery disk that came with this laptop. If you n t have it then
-use the Microsoft installation for the installation of the OS disc. All the drivers, tools and utilities must be installed Additionally one by one. Each of them you can find on Toshiba download page under http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com > support & downloadsPlease note: the product key at the bottom belongs to original recovery image so you probably won't be able to use it for the activation of the operating system.

How to replace a HARD drive on satellite Pro L350-16 has
Hi all
I have a satellite pro L350-16 has with a 160 GB drive HARD by running a Vista 32 bit operating system. I would like to change it to 500 GB.
What should I do if I want to keep all the configurations that I have in the 160 GB of HARD drive.
Thank you.Hello
> What should I do if I want to keep all the configurations that I in the 160 GB HARD drive
If I understand correctly, you want Vista 32 bit with all the configuration to 500 GB hdd? You can use a program called Acronis True image to a hard drive image backup and move it to another hard drive, then. Note that this program is not free, and you must activate it for use.

Need help to install the new hard drive in Satellite Pro M10
Hi all
My hard drive died in my M10 Pro Satellite so I decided to adapt to another.
It fits very well in the caddy, but just does not want to slot into place correctly as something seems to be stopped.
The M10 only accepts a certain brand/model?
Also, nobody knows this as the largest capacity M10 will accept?
Thank you very much.Concerning
JAs much as I know should not be problem at all. Take the old and the new HARD drive and compare the connectors. I hope that they are the same. I can only imagine that the new HD is not placed correctly in the HARD drive bracket. Make sure that the new is placed as an old man after his retirement from the laptop.
As for max capacity of HARD drive, there is no precise information and we can only speculate on this. Try to use the search option on this forum. Maybe someone already talked to upgrade the HDD on Sam/Satellite Pro M10.
The fact is that Satellite Pro comes with 30, 40 and 60 GB hard drives. How many GB does your new HARD drive?

Secondary hard drive for Satellite Pro P200-1DV
Anyone know if it is possible to add a second hard drive for the P200-1DV?
There is room inside the machine, but there is no connector?
As I know the second HARD drive update is not possible because there is no available connectors. The universal laptop Briefcase belongs and it will be used for all models of laptops P200 and some of them come with 2 hard drives.

Sound on the Toshiba Satellite Pro U200 - 199 Ubuntu Feisty
Hello
Does someone have his work on Toshiba U200-199? I'm under Ubuntu Feisty (kernel 2.6.20 - 15-generic) and have tried both the supplied kernel modules and have compiled the latest Alsa (ALSA 1.0.14rc3). However, its still not working.
I tried
-all models that include the snd_hda_intel driver options in the alsa documentation
-added option single_cmd to the driver snd_hda_intel
-the core with pci = noacpi boot
-dumping the dsdt ACPI, recompiling it without errors and loading from a virtual diskAccording to the model provided in option, I got of the different errors, for example:
-hda_intel: azx_get_response timeout, set the mode single_cmd...
-ACPI: Interruption PCI for 0000:00:1 b. 0 disabled deviceI am running the latest update of the BIOS (3.50). Needless to say that the sound works fine in Windows XP.
I'm looking forward to suggestions on getting his work on this model.Best regards
PatrikHi, you have the same problem.
Enable sound in Windows XP, and then pass the parameter ' Device Config. ' in the BIOS to "all devices". It works for me with Ubuntu 7.04 out of the box. If you disable the sound in windows a BIOS is set to 'Installation of OS', takes control over some windows device parameter.
