Setting up the second hard drive preinstalled

I have a Pavilion m9250f equipped of Windows Vista 64-bit with two 500 GB hard drives.  The first hard disk is almost at capacity (available 15%), and I want to know how to set up the second disc for use.

Hello

The SATA controller mode setting is in the bios. F10 will get you into the bios. Back up your data before attempting to make any changes.  If you use the RAID mode then then you will need to enter the Intel RAID CTRL + I utility at startup to disable the parring.  RAID 1 is extra protection in case you have a hard drive failure.  If you disable the RAID 1 parring so be sure to perform backups at a frequency you can live if you experience a hard drive failure.  When the RAID 1 parring is disabled, then the second hard drive will be available for data storage (more than 500GB).  If get you there, then you can do a quick format on the second hard drive.  Now you should be able to move the folders you want to the second hard drive.

    Yes. It is called RAID.

    Hello

    Try the following.

Judgment of the laptop and unplug the 2nd HARD drive.

Robinet tap away at the key esc that you start the computer to launch the Start Menu, and then select f10 to open the bios menu.  Press f5 to load the default values (sometimes it's f9, but the menu below indicates the correct key), use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and press ENTER.  Press f10 to save the setting and still use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and press on enter.

When windows has reloaded, download and reinstall the Chipset driver at the following link.

    Chipset Driver - Windows 7.

When this is finished, stop the laptop.

Reconnect the 2nd HARD drive, then start Notepad and let Windows take over completely for a few minutes before checking if the reader appears in the lower part of the disk management window.

You have misused terminology in this issue, so it's a little difficult to determine what your problem may be caused.

What do you mean by "the computer does not recognize the additional hardware?  Only shows drive in disk management (start > run > diskmgmt.msc > OK)?  If the player appears in disk management, but not in my computer, you may need to use disk management to assign a drive letter.

It seems that if you want to take the faulty computer hard drive (in condition, of course, was not the hard drive itself which was defective) and put it in another computer.

There is no such thing as a "slave of the Tower position."  Likely, you just put the old drive into an available drive Bay.

Generally, the 'secondary' water is used for optical drives - not a second hard drive.  Usually, if there is only one hard drive, it is connected to the connector at the end of the water and the second hard drive is connected via the connector in the middle of the cable.  The cable connected to the primary IDE connector on the motherboard should be a 80 wire cable, while the other may be a 40 wire cable:http://www.mikeshardware.com/howtos/howto_connect_ide_hd.html

When you have 2 drives connected on the same cable 80 wire, one is the 'master' (the one linked at the end of the cable) and the other is the "slave".  You specify the drive to this topic, what you are doing by correctly setting the jumper on the pins at the rear of the car.  You set the jumper on a 'master' and the other as 'slave' or two disks can be set for "Cable Select" If both support this and you have the special cable Select "Cable".

However you connect, you must make sure that the drive of the old computer is defined as the slave drive, because you do NOT want to start from this installation of Windows.

The foregoing assumes that both drives are the older IDE type of walk.  If one or both are SATA drives, it is quite something different.

  • How to use the second HARD drive of Satellite A210 - BP1 for mirroring

Satellite A210-BP1 came with 2 HDD (160 GB).
Now, I want to use the second hard drive mirrored the first, one that has Vista installed.
This should be done without supervision and in real time - as a RAID 1.

    How can I do this?
I also have Vista professional available and I would be willing to use 3rd party software as well.

Thanks in advance for your answers.

    Hi Jan

I doubt that this is possible
Why? The point is that you need to use two hard drives in mirroring, RAID striping, mode etc technology
Satellite A210 can't RAID. It s only a SATA controller without RAID capacity!

Therefore, the final answer is; NO, it is not possible to use mirroring

What parts do I have to mount to place a second drive that they are held in stock by out of the local computer and are quite cheap, can someone advise me on part numbers etc of the bits I need.

    Hello

I know that this empty place for second HARD drive is a bit confusing, but the same situation is with my A200-1CR. The fact is that some A200 models come with 2 hard drives and laptop case design this place must be prepared for this second HDD.

But this does not mean that each A200 can be improved for the second HARD drive.

    Hello

You need two cables, one is a sata cable:

    http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/30305659/706331346/STARTech-com-6in-SATA-to-right-angle-SATA-serial-ATA-cable-female-SATA-female-SATA-6-inch-red/ListingDetails.html?_%24JA=TSID:13315% 7Ccat: 30305659% 7Cprd: 30305659 & kw = {keyword}

This cable is only for data and connect the hard drive to the SATA connector on the motherboard.

    The other cable is energy:

    http://www.itpartsdirect.com/STARTech-15-24cm-4-pin-Molex-to-SATA-power-cable-adaptor.html

It connects the hard drive to the PSU.

You can also buy a combo like this cable:

    http://www.Amazon.co.UK/DP/B00064GBT4/?tag=hydra0b-21&hvadid=9550951989&ref=asc_df_B00064GBT4

All you have to do is to connect the hard drive and that's it. Make sure that the main drive with the operating system is connected to the primary SATA connector (I think there are the numbers 1, 2, 3...)

  • Message need to get an administrator authority, during the passage of the second hard drive.

Original title: pass to the second hard drive

My computer has two hard drives of 500 GB.  One is almost full.  I want to start using the other hard drive, however when I tried my computer said that I need the authority of a Director and that I don't have that power.  I am the only administrator on the computer, so I don't understand why it says that.  In addition, as the original hard disk memory becomes more complete, my computer crashes more.

    Can anyone help?

    Hi ColMarriott,

Using a hard drive internal or external?

You can try the second formatting hard drive after taking a backup of the data on the disk.

If you use an external hard drive, you can try the following steps.

    a. connect the external drive.

    b. find the external hard drive in windows Explorer

    c. right-click on the drive and select format.

You can check the following items and check:

Install or remove a hard drive

Create and format a hard disk partition

Important: Make sure that you have backed up all the data before going forward with the format.

Since the first hard disk is full and crashing, you can try to move some data and check only files not programs drive different or another location.

    Hope this information is useful.

  • keep the second hard drive as duplicate in case of failure of the first disc

I installed the second hard drive of the same size mfg and would not lead copy. Now I want to keep up-to-date with the first hard drive so that if the first drive fails, can I use the second drive until I get replacement for the failed drive. Never forget backups all have problems when you need them.

You can not do it legally.

A single license is a single Installation.

This applies even on the same computer.

  • starting from the second hard drive to a dv7 6199sl

    Hello.

I noticed that my dv7-6199sl space for a second hard drive. There is the caddy but not on cable. Before you buy the cable

(I don't know where yet, maybe HP spare parts site) I need to know if it is possible to boot from the second hard drive with my laptop model. Thanks in advance.

    Best

    John

    Hi John,.

My best guess would be that the USB 3.0 ports require a driver to work correctly, try to boot from it (when the driver is not loaded) may not work - this isn't a definitive answer, but I do not know of bootable recovery media certainly has problems booting from a 3.0.

Regarding the wire to the second HDD, I would suggest sending a request thereon to HP to the Email address in the form below.

  • Can I set up my HP dv7-4165dx to boot from the second hard drive?

I got a HP dv7-4165dx for about 20 months now. Ten months in the original hard drive burned due to setting up directly under the GPU (lower left corner, to the left of the touchpad and under the keys), which gets quite hot on the top to make your uncomfortable hand. Symptoms include blue screens, troubled during start-ups, as well as a message from the system at boot that said the car was damaged. As it was under warranty, I brought it to Best Buy to get the drive replaced, which took about 2.5 months.

Now, about 20 months, I face at the beginning of the exact same symptoms. I noticed that there was a second HDD Bay, away from the GPU, so I bought the yarn necessary to the use of this Bay. Now, he tells me that there is no installed boot drive (the hard drive test in the system diagnostics, knows that it is there). I'm sure that I can swap the drive towards the original Bay and be fine but that puts me $ 75 for the HP kit (Yes, I know I might have to eat that, if there is no way), but much more importantly, this means that I will have an another burned (losing everything, even once) by car a month or two.

I looked, but I can't seem to find a way to tell it boot from that drive. Is it possible, or am I just out of the eye due to bad design? It has been a great machine, except for this problem.

    Hello

Unfortunately there is no option to boot from the HARD drive in the 2nd Bay in one of the series dv7 - sorry for the bad news.

    Best regards

  • HP Pavilion 510n - adding the Second hard drive?

    A few questions...

    1. is there a size limit for any player second, I would like to add?

    2. What is the procedure for adding the second disc?

-J' added a second drive to an OLD pc before and it involved linking the second slot on an IDE cable, change the jumper on the slave drive settings, and modify the bios settings... it would be similar?

Hello TSobiech, it is always best to ask to order a part that is not compatible with a certain system.

The hard disk that you show the link should work perfectly. Even if it's an ATA100, and your system supports ATA33/66, this disc should still work but will be downclocked to ATA66 speed.

Here is another link to a 250 GB IDE HDD if you might be interested.

You won't notice much, if any, degradation in performance to the difference in speed. These IDE drives are higher than the price a SATA with the same capacity, but they are becoming harder to find.

Since you want to be using as operating in car system, but just a backup drive, they want to make a difference.

If you want to make use of the full speed of ATA100, you could add a map of IDE controller supporting ATA100, but I really don't think it would.

Since you mentioned the intermediate layer of IDE as not being used, you can connect the new drive to this connector.

Now, there are a few things that you should check that you install the new hard drive. These are the connectors of jumper on hard drives.

This is the very small plastic with metal inserts, at the end of the hard drive where are the other connectors.

I always use the CSEL (CS) on two hard drives. Readers may already have jumpers to this setting (jumpers connection), but if not, you must set two hard drives the selection of cables (CS).

Since the current IDE hard drive is the boot hard drive and an ATA66, it must be connected to thin ribbon cable connector, as it is now, and the new hard drive attached to the middle connector IDE. The slowest speed of the two hard drives will result in two hard drives running at the slower of the two speeds. It will work very well.

You need to partition and format the new hard disk before it can be used. This can be done from Windows if necessary.

    I hope this helps.
