Setup of Windows XP do not have Outlook Express and Character Map installed along with
I keep my windows XP updated regularly and would always Outlook Express and the table of available characters. Then I uninstalled a few components such as games and discoveries windows Outlook Express was gone too. When I add Outlook Express even once, I lose the Character Map and when I re install the character map, I lose Outlook Express. Cannot have both at the same time! Any ideas?
Thank you, Bruce. I finally got the two programs running again. I discovered that when a user archive boxes to add or remove programs, the action is fast, but the boxes are not automatically disabled later. I tried two programs that run several times over a period of 24 hours, and because the check box of the character table is a sup layer I guess I must have missed at a time when the audit or boxes to uncheck it to the rest of the changes I made. We have received a Windows XP laptop from a friend and use Outlook Express for e-mail. We had a number of other things such as pilots with the laptop but not the Windows CD. Then we wanted to reduce the size of a jpg image and I wanted to use MS Photo Editor to do what I then read on the Microsoft site that I could get by installing from any Windows CD. Therefore, I used an old Windows XP CD from another PC, choose to install an optional component and chose as accessories to the next screen, ensure that all other options were struck down, assuming that so they would simply not be installed. One of them was Outlook Express and Internet Explorer. Instead of THIS the wizard DELETED Outlook Express and Internet Explorer. When I tried to get him back by checking these options, asked me for the 2nd day of the original installation CD - which of course, I did not! I have managed to re - download IE8 from Microsoft Download site, but of course do that for Outlook Express - and we don't have Office on this computer: (.) Help! (a) is it possible to reverse this process to remove/uninstall Outlook Express? (b) we now lost all our emails? (c) I already tried to go back to a previous good configuration, but that has not worked.
Thank you in advance for advice, answers or help.
First, make sure that OE has actually disappeared. Go to start | Run and paste this and see if OE starts:
"c:\program files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe".
Including the quotes and see if OE starts. Very often "withdrawal" OE removes just the shortcut to it.
If this does not work, you can try reinstalling XP SP3 (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/help/learn-how-to-install-windows-xp-service-pack-3-sp3), but you should probably uninstall IE8 first and then reinstall it later.
You can also go to the c:\windows\inf directory and locate the msoe5.inf file and right-click on it and choose Install and see if that fixes things.
See if that works.

Connected to Outlook Express and all my existing e-mails have disappeared
original title: Outlook Express
Connected to Outlook Express and all my existing e-mails have disappeared. Only those today showed. I tried using the search of .eml files and get no results. Can anyone help with location on the hard drive the .eml files? Thank you.
You won't find files for Outlook Express .eml. They are stored in the format of data in the form of .dbx files.
******************************************
Two reasons the most common for what you describe is disruption of the compacting process, (never touch anything until it's finished), or bloated folders. More about that below.
Why OE insists on compacting folders when I close it? :
http://www.insideoe.com/FAQs/why.htm#compact
Why mail disappears:

About file Corruption:
http://www.Microsoft.com/Windows/IE/community/columns/filecorruption.mspxRecovery methods:
If you use XP/SP2 or SP3, and are fully patched, then you should have a backup of your dbx files in the Recycle Bin (or possibly the message store), copied as bak files.
To restore a folder bak on the message store folder, first find the location of the message store.
Tools | Options | Maintenance | Store folder will reveal the location of your Outlook Express files. Note the location and navigate on it in Explorer Windows or, copy and paste in start | Run.
In Windows XP, the .dbx files are by default marked as hidden. To view these files in the Solution Explorer, you must enable Show hidden files and folders under start | Control Panel | Folder options | View.
Close OE and in Windows Explorer, click on the dbx to the file missing or empty file, then drag it to the desktop. It can be deleted later once you have successfully restored the bak file. Minimize the message store.
Open OE and, if the folder is missing, create a folder with the * exact * same name as the bak file you want to restore but without the .bak. For example: If the file is Saved.bak, the new folder should be named saved. Open the new folder, and then close OE. If the folder is there, but just empty, continue to the next step.
First of all, check if there is a bak file already in the message. If there is, and you have removed the dbx file, go ahead and rename it in dbx.
If it is not already in the message, open the trash and do a right-click on the file bak for the folder in question and click on restore. Open the message store up and replace the .bak by .dbx file extension. Close the message store and open OE. Messages must be in the folder.
If messages are restored successfully, you can go ahead and delete the old dbx file that you moved to the desktop.
If you have not then bak copies of your dbx files in the Recycle Bin:DBXpress run in extract disc Mode is the best chance to recover messages:
http://www.oehelp.com/DBXpress/default.aspxAnd see:
http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#4A general warning to help avoid this in the future:
Do not archive mail in default OE folders. They finally are damaged. Create your own folders defined by the user for mail storage and move your mail to them. Empty the deleted items folder regularly. Keep user created folders under 300 MB, and also empty as is possible to default folders.
Disable analysis in your e-mail anti-virus program. It is a redundant layer of protection that devours the CPUs, slows down sending and receiving and causes a multitude of problems such as time-outs, account setting changes and has even been responsible for the loss of messages. Your up-to-date A / V program will continue to protect you sufficiently. For more information, see:
http://www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3And backup often.

I just installed Desktop Manager 5.0 and connected to my BB 8830. I use Outlook Express 2000 for the calendar and I want to sync it with my BB 8330. However, in Desktop Manager under Sync / Config / select the device for the calendar, the only choices are Yahoo and text import/export. Of course, it does not recognize Outlook Express 2000 as a calendar program. Does anyone have a solution?
I bought this 8830 mainly to sync its calendar with my Outlook Express calendar. If this does not work, then I'll go back to my cell phone operator.
I installed Desktop Manager 4.1 and it works now. Be aware with this version, once you connect your BB to your computer, unless you go through the Wizard Windows Found New Hardware, Desktop Manager does not recognize the connection with your BB and your computer (I don't have to do with version 5.0).
RIM should be more attentive to people with a recent phone, but still using an earlier version of Microsoft Outlook / office.

I have Outlook Express 6. When I want to fix anything, the attachment box appears in a small... with only 6-8 files/folders showing both. How to adjust the size of the box? There is no minimize mazimize click or angle to slide. It used to be adjustable, but no more. Help?
Like when you open a new message window and either click the button attach or insert | Attachment? I don't ever remember being resizable or a very large box. Change the display of list will give you a bit more, but that's all.
