SHORT SMART SELF-TEST IS A FAILURE

THE READ ELEMENT OF THE SMART TEST FAILED;   WHAT CAN I DO?

When you request support, please provide the HP model name and/or product the full number of the computer in question.

It is generally an indication that the hard disk has failed or is about to fail. Please see the HP document entitled 'Hard Drive failure errors' for useful information about SMART errors. I hope that you have already created your personal set of HP recovery disks. If you can, save all the personal data and you want to save the files.

  • J4580 OfficeJet AIO - self-test or boot failure?

When I press the power button to start the printer, the LCD displays the error message "Turn the printer off and then turn on the printer" and the exclamation point indicator will blink.

On the HP Web site, there are instructions that State - unplug the printer, disconnect the power supply and leave it unplugged for at least 30 seconds, then reconnect everything to the. If the fault indicator repeats, then repeat, but this time plug the power module into a different electrical circuit. If the fault indicator repeats, then connect the USB cable to a different USB port on the PC (looking for land?). If no improvement, then have to 'fix' the printer.  I did this process twice, left the printer off for 24 hours and tried again with no improvement - it still does not boot to the top.

I suspect that the power module (we used to call processors) is defective.

1 has anyone else experienced this problem and what do you have on this?

    2. I can't find any place on the site of HP to find out where to 'fix' printer.  The function of location service is under construction and don't show me dealers that buy a printer!  Boy, this is useful! Any suggestions?

I guess I'll have to call HP and prepare to give up an evening to chat with someone in Mumbai or Karachi or wherever that is not allowed to deviate from their scenario, not to answer any of my questions and then transferred me to someone else who asked the same questions, this process is repeated twice more then HP disconnects the call...

    Updated - 11/06/09

11/05/09 - I got a technician who took me to another diagnostic examination - unplug the printer, hold # and 6 so that the printer back-apparently it's some sort of reset - failed, it was decided that my printer is defective and must be replaced.

Under the terms of the extended warranty program "Next Business Day", a replacement printer (refurb) should be sent to me within 24 hours.

12/05/09 - I got a call from HP indicating that no printer replacement was available at the warehouse, and I have to probably wait a week to receive a.

When I called to complain about the failure of HP to the height for the guarantee program NBD I had paid for, a case of Bishop committed to send me a new, but warned it could take up to a week. I said OK.

13/05/09 - a refurb printer has been delivered by the depot which had none!

14/05/09 - a new printer arrived, one sent by Bishop of the case, I unpacked, installed, put my defective unit in the new box and it was shipped to the Center back, and then I went back to the refurb at its depot unit.

27/05/09 - a second printer refurb arrived the deposit!  I called HP case Mgr, which says ship just return to depot. I agreed, but told him if I get another, I'll consider a gift and keep it. So far, no third printer arrived.

BTW, once I installed the new J4580, my PC slowed to a crawl because of all the software of garbage that HP sent - as hpqddscv (hpqddsvc?) who just sits there and "constantly" "ping" (approximately 10 seconds) to see if I have installed all new HP (HP CUE Device Discovery Service) devices and another program that starts a session Internet to determine if there are any software updates in waiting for HP (once again every 10 seconds!)-I had to disable several other HP routines in order to get my PC and this return to normal.

HP - don't you like just them?

It is likely that you will need to replace the hard drive.  To confirm, press F12 at startup, enter the Dell diagnostics.  Run an extended hard drive test.

If the system is under warranty, logs the error and contact Dell for a replacement drive.

If the system is out of warranty, any standard 3.5 "SATA drive will work as a replacement.

I also went in the BIOS BOOT MENU by pressing F12 at startup and ran diagnostics that seemed to have said everything going, however I saw a mistake, faliure in its process that was too fast for me to write the error.

In a nutshell, my thought is that my hard drive has failed / is corrupted or is about to fail.

My simple question is, do I need a new hard drive with the information I've provided?

    Thank you very much!

To all those who read this topic:

I rang Dell directly and they confirmed my hard drive needs to be replaced.

  • SMART short self-test - on the second hard drive

    HP Pavilion Elite e9270t - 3 yrs old, Win7.

Became the error SMART self-test short the original drive so I installed a replacement and transferred files.

I get the same error on the second h/d. I have my doubts that the second disk is having the exact same error and wonder if the s/w test is actually the problem.

It could very well be the connectors that gives you the question instead of the HARD drive itself. I would run the HARD drive test in BIOS instead of the short test.

    Try this:

    1. Plug the AC adapter into the computer if it is not already connected.
    2. Turn off the computer and wait five seconds.
    3. Press the power button to start the computer and repeatedly press the F10 key to enter the BIOS Setup menu.
    4. Use the right arrow or left arrow keys to navigate the menu selection to find the Auto test primary hard drive option. Depending on your BIOS, it is under diagnoses or tools.
    5. Select self-test primary hard drive, and then press the Enter key to start the test.

Figure 1: Example of a primary hard disk self test screen

The hard drive self test performs a Quick Test , followed by a complete Test. During each test, the window displays a status bar and a scheduled for completion

Let me know the results of this test.

    • The purpose of S.M.A.R.T. is to warn a user of imminent drive failure while there is still time to take action, such as copying the data to a replacement unit.

The above is an excerpt from the article below:

    S.M.A.R.T.
     http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S.M.A.R.T.

The thread below from Windows SevenForums describes possible solutions:

    Windows 7 - SMART short self-test fail
     http://www.SevenForums.com/hardware-devices/148900-smart-short-self-test-fail.html

I strongly suggest you to immediately perform a backup of all your personal files, data, and anything else that is important for you to external media (an external IMO is better but you can also use CD/DVD or a USB flash drive) until the hard drive breaks down.

Hello Atelier42, this usually indicates that you have a hard disk failure.

I would like to back up my data as soon as possible, just in case the hard drive breaks down actually.

You must also make sure that you have the HP Recovery restore set for your system recovery disc in case you do not want to replace the hard drive.

With this restore HP Recovery disk set, you could replace a defective hard drive and use this disk set to your HP system back as it was when shipped. Then, you could put your data saved on your system.
