  To change your windows 7 application icon you can use following the procedure-
  a. Right click on the desktop icon and then click Properties.
  b. now Select the shortcut tab and see button below to change the icon. Click the button change icon now all the icons.
  c. you can choose a of the icons that you want for the shortcut.

  When I try to create a desktop icon to a Web site I get the message

  Unable to open this Internet shortcut.  The "http" Protocol is not a registered program

  You must set the internet program by default.  Usually, your browser will ask you to make the default to manage the http protocol, but if not, you will need to manually set in the browser options.

  If you use Internet explorer, go to control panel Internet Options-->--> click programs, and then click the button "make default".

  If you use Firefox, go to the menu of Firefox--> Options--> click on the Advanced tab, and then click the button 'Make Firefox the default browser'

  I do not use so I can't give you exact measurements, but in other browsers as well, you should find the option other browsers.
