Snow Leopard update to El Capitan

I need to upgrade my imac of El Capitan of Snow Leopard desktop (end 2008) 10.6.8 version. Read these forums useful to get advice, I do not understand some of the info/advice.

I've been deleting old files and currently have 10.5 MB of available storage on the hard disk, the original mac hard drive.

I have a 3 to backup (WD My Book for Mac) hard drive installed.

Recently, I added 2 GB of memory for a total of 4 GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRam.

1. the same cloning to backup?

2. If I have everything backed up on the external hard drive that automatically includes the old (current Snow Leopard) OS in case I need to go back or to be saved/cloned separately because I have seen recommended in the forums?

3 partitioning?

I read the recommendations to do a clean installation of El Capitan.

Can I do this on the external hard drive?

4 it is necessary to copy the old Snow Leopard and new El Capitan, as recommended, something about installing quit and dragging to the desktop.

5 How long take to upgrade about once I start to download El Capitan?

All the other advice that I missed would be greatly appreciated.

Forgive me if I ask too many questions at a time. My problem to understand how to do without creating new problems is to find all the info in one place.

And thanks to all those who help the rest of us who do not know these things.

1. a backup copy of all of your computer includes all visible files but you would not be able to boot from it. A clone of the exact state of the hard drive backup and you can boot from it, or clone back again to restore a previous state. It is strongly recommended that you can return to Snow Leopard if you really pretty easily.

2. Yes, if you make a clone.

3 n ° operation of an external drive is slower. I should not do a clean install, because it will be wiping and after restore, your HDA drive. Partitioning, if you have enough space, may allow you to have both the old and new configurations available quickly, but it should not be necessary.

4. this suggestion applies to the El Capitan installer that, left alone, will clear itself after installation. If you want to install on another machine is also good when you should leave as soon as it starts to install it and copy it to another location so that it remains available. None of this applies to Snow Leopard, which cannot be installed on disk.

5. the download depends on your internet speed, and also how fast the server responds. I don't know about actual installation, but overall you must allow several hours.

  • Could not open the Photos after Snow Leopard update to El Capitan

I have an iMac 3.06 GHz, which has been updated to El Capitan on January 15. Most of the things were going well with the transition, but it seems to be "stuck" now between iPhoto and photo - I don't know how else to put it, but I can't open the Photos. When I click on it in the Dock, I get the attached screenshot. It has been like that for several years I did the update to El Capitan. At first, it seemed that iPhoto has been migrated correctly to Photos during the update. But then, after clicking on my backup external to iPhoto, it appeared that if the migration process began all over again.  I now have the image shown on the attached screenshot. He's been stuck on '50% complete' for several days. When I try to stop the Photos I get: "Can't leave the Photos when creating or opening a library."

After doing some checks for similar problems in previous posts, I was clued in to take a look at my Applications folder. And here, it lists the following multiple iPhoto libraries:

iPhoto Library... January 15, 2016 (Date last opened)

    iPhoto Library - old... January 15, 2016.

    iPhoto Library - old... January 29, 2016.

    iPhoto Library - old... November 26, 2015.

    iPhoto Library... November 25, 2016.

Clearly - even for me! -something is all fucked up here

There is no attached screenshots - to attach a picture click on the camera icon in the top bar of the new message window

What format is the external hard drive? Is this a Time Machine backup or EHD are used by TM? How the EHD are connected to your Mac?

And you should not have iPhoto (or pictures) libraries in your applications folder - they should be in your pictures folder

One thing to try is force quit Photos (File menu ==> force quit), and then drag the iPhoto library you want to migrate the Photos icon in the Dock (if it is in an appropriate place on an appropriate disk)

  • I've updated to Snow Leopard for OSX El Capitan as the info said that my Mac 2009 could be updated.  However, I had a lot of problems and it is extremely slow, among other things.  Should I have upgraded Yosemite or something else first?

I have a 2009 IMac and had Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and IPhotos, latest version.  While he was trying to use something new, I wanted to download (can't remember what now) my system said that I had to switch to OSX El Capitan, so I did.  Since then, I've had nothing but problems, the computer is very slow to open anything and Photos is terrible - I can't do anything with it and I hate it!  I much preferred IPhotos.  My question is, should I have upgraded to Yosemite or something else before going directly to El Capitan?  If so, what can I do now to remedy the situation?  Thanks for any advice.

My question is, should I have upgraded to Yosemite or something else before going directly to El Capitan?

No, but you must have insured all the software you have installed, changes to the system, in particular, was compatible with El Capitan.

You can use iPhoto, but you should get used to the Photos like iPhoto will be is more up-to-date and may stop working at some point.

If you run this program, it will show what is installed. After the output here and we might be able to offer advice on what's causing your problems

  • You can import users of snow leopard server in el capitan Server

I have a client with a server on Snow Leopard (10.6).  It has never been updated so far.  Can I export the users and groups in Workgroup Manager, and then import them directly into the server of El Capitan?

Yes.  You can do it three ways.  The first is to export the flat files by using the export of managers of the working group.  You can do this for users and groups.  The point here is that you don't have passwords.  Flat files will not flat files password export as plain text.  However, export of Workgroup Manager can give you more data you want to import into a new system as the MCX is discouraged.  You can use dsexport instead.  Using dsexport allows you to exclude attributes that you cannot be postponed.  The third way is to export an archive Open Directory.  An archive is a DMG file password which will include passwords, but also all of the stuff that you can't move protected.  In Admin Server on the 10.6 machine go to the archive and export an archive of OD.  This method may not be perfect, but if you must keep the UID and GUID values such as password, an archive of the AO is the best method.  But, be prepared for oddities as there is a lot of distance between 10.6 and 10.11.

  • restoration of time Snow Leopard machine on el capitan

My iMac is toast. I have a MacBook Pro, dated but supported for El Capitan. I want to spend all my El Capitan Time machine, including the operating system for the MacBook Pro. Instructions to do this involve booting from a recovery partition, or an equivalent of the internet. But the Snow Leopard operating system does not support these approaches. How to boot in order to restore?

I discovered recently, after trying to start my El Capitan Macbook Pro to an ext hdd than Snow Leopard snow leopard anything or not can not read the disc El Capitan. However, the reverse is ok.

The best thing I think would be to reinstall the time Machine back to El Capitan, then do a manual brake and fall back to the top of your data to another drive before installation installation of Snow Leopard then drag and drop your files backed up to your new snow Leopard.

It is because (if I remember correctly), time machine back ups are difficult to navigate. I always use Carbon Copy Cloner as it makes a bootable copy of my drive and you can easily access your files if you plug it in as an ext hdd.

You only really need to back up your home folder and make sure that your keychain files and the browser are stored, and then reinstall all your applications. Maybe a little harder if you have a lot of paid applications.

That's what I'd do, but maybe someone else has a better idea.

  • Leopard MacBook pro late 2008 - updated to update to snow leopard

I have a macbook pro late 2008 with leopard on updated to snow leopard, which is the best upgrade, that I can do without problems?

I upgraded to 8 GB memory and 500 GB MMX 200 ssd.  tTe upgrade was necessary because I installed el capitan and he absolutely killed my mac, so I got the diagnostics to find my drive was not hard.

I'll reinstall leopard and use my snow leopard updated, but to what extent until I can go without problems over?

In theory, it must be able to handle El Capitan. You can't really judge El Capitan performance enough if you ran it on a bad HARD drive.

Your only real options stay with Snow Leopard, goes to the mountain, which is still fairly recent, Lion or El Capitan.  I think most people would say that Lion (10.7) alone is not worthwhile.  Mavericks and Yosemite are no longer available unless you already have a copy.  Mountain Lion is no longer receiver update but is not a fall to the same extent (yet) by the developers of software under Snow Leopard.  Some claim that it is the operating system more acceptable from 10.6.  You can always buy a download code for it.

  • Snow Leopard has been set for Photoshop CS3?

I think the upgrade from 10.4.11 to Snow Leopard, but some people have told me that my

Adobe Photoshop CS3 (which I use regularly as well as InDesign CS3 and Acrobat 8 Professional) will not be

    always work with Snow Leopard.

Other people have said that Apple has fixed the problems with the 10.6.4 update and they told me

that all my CS3 apps works perfectly with the Snow Leopard update.

Anyone of you guys work with version CS3 with Snow Leopard?  If so, how do things work?

    Your opinion is welcome.

    Thanks for your help.

No problem here. Sorry it does not work for you. I am running Photoshop CS3 on a 2008 Mac Pro 8-core 2.8 GHz and a 2007 Macbook Pro Core 2 Duo 2.33 GHz without problem.

  • Problems with fonts in InDesign CS3 in Snow Leopard

Has anyone else had problems with the font book and InDesign CS3?

Just had some new Mac Mini running Snow Leopard against Migration Assistant an old Mini. Initially, every thing seems to be great. But on the opening of the ads in Indd CS3 I noticed that fonts disappeared, even if they have been enabled in the font book.

Then I reinstalled the necessary fonts and we don't use iLife and iTools products, I traded the Helvetica TrueType for the version of Adobe.

    It does not work...

So, I have rebuilt the Mac fonts installed, once again, a CD original and installed InDesign CS3 clean (orig DVD)...

Yet once again, did not work.

Now, I know I can put fonts required in the folder Fonts in InDesign, or store them in ~/Library/Fonts, but since we have a library of 3000 + policies that manage our users with the font book, it will become unworkable.

Anyone could launch a patch or fix this, another way...?

There is a Snow Leopard update, you will need to search in preferences/software update system after the upgrade. After the reboot, this problem has been elminated for me, fortunately!

  • Update iTunes library of Snow Leopard in El Capitan

    Hello everyone

I have a new iMac running El Capitan (iTunes 12.3) that I want to update an iTunes library from my old Mac that took place from Snow leopard. (Not sure this number of old iTunes because the old Mac crashed) I copied the old iTunes from a backup folder to the new Mac. Here's what its structure looks like:

However, when I point the new iTunes on this record, he is not recognized and implemented to date so I have everything in my new iTunes. I could import all the media from the iTunes Music folder, but then I do not have my playlists.

What is the right path to access the old library on the new Mac?

    Thanks for the help!

    Hello

Create a new folder in the Finder window and call it Itunes1

Drag all of the files and folders inside except for Album work.

Launch iTunes by pressing ⌥ alt, and then select the iTunes1 library

    Hello

I tried to upgrade to Snow Leopard 10.6.8 to El Capitan and continued to meet any installation errors.  I tried many attempts and ran disk permission repair.  It is motivated by the inability to activate an iPhone 6s with the latest version of itunes 10.6.8 access.

I have over 400 GB of free space on the hard drive of the facility.  The installation runs about 6 minutes before failing.  I have re downloaded the Setup file of four times and have tried about 7 installs.

I have attached some data of the Setup log.  Please let me me if more is needed.

Take a look in your Applications folder to install OS X El Capitan.app, if you drag to the trash and delete.

Restart your Mac and try the download again.

You have backed up your system to Snow Leopard, you really have to do that if there is no problem

You can always restore to a working system.

Its a big leap then have you prepared, for example, have you checked to see if the third party apps you have

are compatible with El Capitan and updates. You will probably lose iPhoto and Aperture if you have installed them.

You can partition your drive and install a copy of the El Capitan, for the test and start between the two

until you feel able to El Capitan, and then make the leap.

A lot of things to think about.

  • Update of os x Snow Leopard to El Capitan 10.11.5 10.6.8

    Hi all...

I just upgraded my Macbook Pro 13 "since mid-2010 at the El Capitan 10.11.5."

    Configuration of my Macbook Pro:

2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

    4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3

    NVIDIA GeForce 320M 256 MB

These are the problems I encounter:

    • I can't switch between the previous page and next page with 3 fingers sliding left or right, I could do without effort on my previous version of the osx
    • The startup time is very high... (40 seconds to 1 minute)
    • The system preference takes time to open

Please help on the above problems.

The only reason to upgrade my Macbook Pro has been because the iTunes was not compatible with my new iPhone SE. (there where we need the itunes 12.3.3.17 and who used to work on my OSx snow leopard 10.6.8)

Please help me to solve the above problems. Also let me know if I need a downgrade to older versions of the operating system

    Check your trackpad settings

To be honest, with only 4 GB of RAM and running El Cap - it all seems normal with a HD of spinning.  Snow Leopard is much lighter and compact operating system.

The only reason to upgrade my Macbook Pro has been because the iTunes was not compatible with my new iPhone SE.

It doesn't pay to get too far behind in technology or OS X.

Add more RAM and an SSD, you'd be amazed at the difference. Check out https://www.macsales.com/

  • How to uninstall El Capitan and replaces it with clone of Snow Leopard?

I had a chance terrible execution El Capitan, including in connection with CS5. It takes (literally) 10 x more time to save a .tiff file in El Capitan, than that of Snow Leopard. I suspect much too many processes running in the background, which most is probably not necessary, but I don't know that for sure. Something is not.

I have a clone perfect my Snow Leopard former plant and wonder if that can just be installed right on El Capitan, as when we do an update of the operating system, or do I have to erase the whole score first, then install clone?

(I know, I'll then have browser problems, but...)

FTR: Mac Pro (early 2009, 2.66 Ghz, single image), running OS 10.11.5

    Thank you very much

    Hi CFS88,

Thanks for joining the communities Support from Apple. I see your message you need to restore your operating system Snow Leopard of El Capitan. I'm happy to help you!

To install Snow Leopard on your system, you will need to use a snow leopard install DVD or disc of original installation if your Mac comes with Snow Leopard originally. Once you insert the disc, press and hold the C button it restarts and restart your Mac. This will allow you to boot from the installation disc. From there, you can use disk utility to wipe your drive and reinstall OS X. Once installation is complete, you can choose your preferred option to migrate your data to your Mac using the installation wizard.

If you use Time Machine, you can restore from a backup Time Machine with installed thus 10.6:

macOS Sierra: return to an earlier version of Mac OS

    See you soon!
