Sound has stopped working Windows 7

I have Windows 7 Home Premium on an ASUS x 64 laptop with Realtek HD Audio Manager. My audio has suddenly stopped working. Realtek HD speakers are listed as the audio device by default, but when I test them I get an error message "could not play the test tone. It makes no difference if I plugged headphones. I tried to update the software of the Realtek driver, but he told me that I already have the latest version of the software installed.

Hi Joey,

Thanks for posting your query on the Microsoft Community.

I wish to inform you that it is possible that it is possible to install the Audio Related back drivers. See the link below for more information:

Vista and Windows 7 updated drivers love then here's how update the most important.

This is my generic how updates of appropriate driver:

This utility, it is easy see which versions are loaded:

-Free - DriverView utility displays the list of all device drivers currently loaded on your system.
For each driver in the list, additional useful information is displayed: load address of the driver,
Description, version, product name, company that created the driver and more.
    http://www.NirSoft.NET/utils/DriverView.html

For drivers, visit manufacturer of emergency system and of the manufacturer of the device that are the most common.
Control Panel - device - Graphics Manager - note the brand and complete model
your video card - double - tab of the driver - write version information. Now, click on update
Driver (this can do nothing as MS is far behind the certification of drivers) - then right-click.
Uninstall - REBOOT it will refresh the driver stack.

Repeat this for network - card (NIC), Wifi network, sound, mouse, and keyboard if 3rd party
with their own software and drivers and all other main drivers that you have.

Now in the system manufacturer (Dell, HP, Toshiba as examples) site (in a restaurant), peripheral
Site of the manufacturer (Realtek, Intel, Nvidia, ATI, for example) and get their latest versions. (Look for
BIOS, Chipset and software updates on the site of the manufacturer of the system here.)

Download - SAVE - go to where you put them - right click - RUN AD ADMIN - REBOOT after
    each installation.

Always check in the Device Manager - drivers tab to be sure the version you actually install
presents itself. This is because some restore drivers before the most recent is installed (sound card drivers
in particular that) so to install a driver - reboot - check that it is installed and repeat as
    necessary.

Repeat to the manufacturers - BTW in the DO NOT RUN THEIR SCANNER device - check
    manually by model.

Look at the sites of the manufacturer for drivers - and the manufacturer of the device manually.

If you update the drivers manually, then it's a good idea to disable the facilities of driver under Windows

I have "talked" with representatives of both HP and they suggested that I got the virus and viruses were the cause of the problem. One of them made me try "MalWareBytes". Another suggested I use "SUPERspyware. Both services have found a virus/spyware and if all goes well, they're gone. Currently, I am using Verizon Internet Security Suite and do not plan to get rid of him. All I want to know is how can I solve this problem? I don't want to pay to solve this problem, because I am a full time student and the fall semester is in a few days.  I use on Windows Vista Edition Home Premium and I have a HP Pavilion a6519fh PC (premium of Intel Dual - Core E2180 Desktop Processor). Hello Carla,.

Try to use the System File Checker to scan your operating system for missing/corrupt files, perform the following steps:

    1. Click Startand type cmd in the box start the search .
    2. In the results, right-click on cmd.exearea, and then click run as administrator. You will be asked to type the password for an administrator account. If you are the administrator or type the administrator password, click continue . Then, click continue.
    3. At the command prompt, type Sfc/scannow, and then press ENTER.

The analysis may take some time, so be patient. Windows allows to fix corrupt or missing files it finds. If the information of the installation CD is required to fix the problem, you may be asked to insert your Windows Vista CD.

Hope this helps you. Let us know anyway. Make it a great day!
