  Windows XP Professional SP3, updates, motherboard Asus P4P800 series (2006). The original system dates back to 2002, but there have been many additions and replacement upgrade.   I did a "System Restore" and the icon reappeared, and the sound now works.
  I restarted the computer a couple of times, but that does not solve the problem.  Also, I went into the Panel and checked to see if the speakers were working and were lit, and they were.
  It wasn't until I did the restore of the system that the icon reappeared and the noise began to work again.
