Start menu empty records.

I just me am nailed with a couple of scanners rogue malware yesterday, and the second was particularly nasty.  He moved all my files, to the point that I thought that my documents and my office have been completely deleted, disabled everything that might be able to get rid of the virus, etc.  24 hours later, I restored everything, except one: all my program in my Start menu folders are empty.  In addition, all my favorites and recently used in the start menu icons are gone.  Here are the things I've tried:

The computer scanned with Malwarebytes, Spybot S & D, Ad-Aware, analyze it.

Deleted manually the reportable registry is commonly associated with this particular virus.

Attempt to register patch fixes.

Attempted to run the system recovery.  Three times.  System recovery finished as 'failed' and has not changed.

View all the folders on drive C: (this particular action restored the files themselves, which have been previously also hidden, but not the content within these files).

Refuse the privileges of startup in msconfig.

I think that's what I tried.  I'm lost on this one, but determined to find a way to get this thing back to where it was yesterday.  Any ideas?

Syed,

I've done both.  This virus scanner is powerful enough; He finds a virus my other scanners missed others.  After you delete these files, I ran the file system scan.  Yet, all the folders are empty.  I tried the system restore, but whenever I tried, Windows failed.  So I think that the system restore does not record decent restore points.  I can, however, only falling back to shortcuts in the start menu, which is what I do with programs that I needed them yesterday.  But thanks for the help.

Slim, which is where I found a registry patch.  Did not work.

  • After installing a program, the program on the start menu folder is empty.

    After installing a program, the program on the start menu folder is empty. Here is my problem for the last 3 months, I got a problem with the installation of programs on my newest PC is Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2. After Installation the problem is that when I go to start and all programs folder menus and switch to this folder the last installed Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2, the program shows as empty folder. I can't run anything in the menu start all programs. Other small programs that I installed, I was able to start the program to find the exe to start and worked with it by starting the program example start.exe start. When I start sqlservr.exe manually from C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL server\MSSQL10_50.SQLEXPRESS\MSSQL\Binn it comes up with a black screen and a small window which I don't know that I do not get the appropriate permissions on the files it needs to run. • The Start Menu program folder is empty

    I was trying to organize my folders in the program file in the start menu. In my effort to move some of the files, a new appeared folder also named 'Programmes', which seemed to be a duplicate in the program file, so I removed it. When I did the menu is empty, so I tried to restore it from the Recycle Bin. He restored some of the files and folders, but none that were originally on the computer, such as the Solitaire and file administration tools. Essentially, I want to clean the computer and reinstall all programs and files that have been on it the day I bought the computer. However, I don't have a CD to do this.

    How to restore my Start menu list?

    How to get Vista recovery Media and/or to use the Vista recovery Partition on your computer.

    There is no Vista free download legal available.

    Contact your computer manufacturer and ask them to send a recovery disk/s Vista set.

    Normally, they do this for a cost of $ small.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    In addition, ask them if you have a recovery Partition on your computer/laptop to restore it to factory settings.
    See if a manual provided with the computer or go to the manufacturer's website, email or you can call for information on how to make a recovery.
    Normally, you have to press F10 or F11 at startup to start the recovery process...
    Another way I've seen on some models is press F8 and go to a list of startup options, and launch a recovery of standards of plant with it, by selecting the repair option.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    Ask them if you can also make recovery disk/s for the recovery Partition in case of a system Crash or hard drive failure.

    They will tell you how to do this.

    Every computer manufacturer has their own way of making recovery disk/s.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Or borrow a good Microsoft Vista DVD (not Dell, HP, etc).
    A good Vista DVD contains all versions of Vista.
    The product key determines which version of Vista is installed.
    There are 2 disks of Vista: one for 32-bit operating system, and one for 64-bit operating system.
    If install a cleaning is required with a good DVD of Vista (not HP, Dell recovery disks):
    Go to your Bios/Setup, or the Boot Menu at startup and change the Boot order to make the DVD/CD drive 1st in the boot order, then reboot with the disk in the drive.
    At the startup/power on you should see at the bottom of the screen either F2 or DELETE, go to Setup/Bios or F12 for the Boot Menu
    You have the folder i386 somewhere in your car?
    Maybe in C:\windows\ServicePackFiles\i386
    If so, you can try to use that to restore these games, instead of pointing to the CD do point to the i386 folder.
    Click Start > Control Panel
    Double click on "Add or Remove Programs.
  • Post Virus left side of the Start Menu is empty - XP Home Edition
    Although I had (have) Microsoft Security Essential under my protection against the virus, I have acquired the Virus from Windows XP Recovery. Although there are long, I lost the functionality of system restore using Spybot, Malware bytes and MY, I think I've eradicated the virus. I use the computer in normal mode, and it seems to work normally. However, all elements previously available on the left side of the start menu, including MS Word, are no longer.
    I use a version of MS Office 2003. I can access MS Word documents stored on the computer and laboriously open a new Word document like this, but I get a message that there were a change in the model when I try to close any Word document. The guest in Tools/Options/save message is not checked and no auto-macro display in the macro area.
    Editing the registry is above my pay grade and I don't have the disks of office. Two questions: 1) any suggestion (s) rather than buying another copy of Microsoft Office?, and 2) what are the chances that I actually eliminated the virus?
    Thanks in advance for any help,
    I use Windows 7 Home Premium on an AMD Athlon (TM) II X 4 630 2.80 GHz with 6.0 GB of RAM (64 bit OS). PC is up-to-date with the latest updates and use Norton Anti Virus.
    I used this PC for several months with no problems. After doing some research in my menu of the taskbar Windows Explorer and start icons have become corrupted. The links always work but do not show the right program.
    I tried several things to fix this. I removed everything in the start menu and taskbar, rebooted, added a few back but the problem still exists. I deleted the icon cache file (renamed to db.old), restarted, problem still exist. I made a recovery of a checkpoint system before the problem was still not fixed. When I go to small icons, the problem disappears. The problem only seems to appear when you use large icons in the bar of tasks and the start menu.
