  I am running windows 7 on a Toshiba Satellite L500-1XL.

  About 6 weeks, Windows refuses to load.
  I would get the "Toshiba" screen, then on startup of Windows startup, but then nothing else than a black screen with an icon of the mouse (mobile).

  I could not in safe mode, and Toshiba built in recovery utility would not work.
  "Even using the Toshiba ' product recovery" DVD did nothing, even if the drive was some strange, repetitive clicks for this, so I suspected a faulty hard drive. (Possibly where the MBR has been OK, but the data weren't?)

  In any case, I put in a replacement HARD drive (backups are a wonderful thing BTW!) and DVD recovery charge perfectly and everything seemed fine.

  About 2 weeks later, I had the same problem
  ("Toshiba" Windows startup splash screen, but then nothing but a black screen with a mouse (mobile), no safe mode icon; no recovery utility)

  This time, however the product recovery DVDs worked fine first time.

  Another 2 weeks and the same problem will reoccur; This time, it took another HARD disk for the recovery media to work.

  So my question is, really, what could be causing this anomaly?

  I've owned several Toshiba laptops before and I've even worked for Toshiba so worry, I like the machine. But I have a problem with his recovery software. I just bought a laptop Satellite L500-1DT with Windows 7 64 bit, on behalf of a non-techie who lives elsewhere.   With bravery bordering stupidity (*) I even Redid the procedure hard disk provided instead of my rescue: first I have nuked the windows partition, then I save the HD (with F8), not with the DVD that I had done. Result: similar rigmarole, with endless reboot.

  After that I stopped it, it kind-of-worked, as above, but now some programs were lacking, such as the Toshiba DVD drive.

  (*) motivated by: better try now with the computer here and all my tools and other computers ready at hand, that when the computer died at home of its owner, and that's the only thing left to try with me at the other end of a line call. Been there before.

  Now, that specific (DVD player), that I could download it from the support page and it installed fine. But what else might be missing or not working not that I have not noticed? The restore process is clearly not working as it should.

  I'm the first or only to whom it happens? I'm doing something wrong? Is there anything else I should try?

  I need to make sure that the restore procedure works perfectly while I still have the computer in my hands. If not, there is no chance that I'll be able to do a remote reinstall for my non-techie, once I asks me to clean the laptop by phone a few months from now.

  That's ok with your laptop. My satellite that a500 is also like that, even if I surf the Internet, watch movie and CPU shows only 5%. I don't play all the games. It didn't because of the dust because I clean it regularly, installed all the drivers, BIOS updated.
