Suggestions of RAID for local storage of ESXi5.

I'll put up a little POC ESXi 5 Ent environment and you want to use local storage. (5 x 146 GB 15 k disks). I'm not really worried about space, the virtual machine will be small and fair for the POC, but I want to put in place the discs of the best that I can. I read about a large RAID 5 and 1 spare HD, 1 small RAID 1 for ESXi and then RAID 10 for VM.

What is a good best practice which will INCLUDE a built-in redundancy incase I want to lose a player.

Thank you!

Say 5 concerts for esx...

Make at least 6 GB for the operating system and scratch partition can be configured! Depending on how the controller RAID calculates disk space, 5 GB may be simply too little a few bytes. I usually do 10 GB which allows for a small store of data that I use for ISO images.

Does anyone know if this is even the case for modern storage?

We are a dell shop, wishing to take advantage of the ability to create up to 64 TB RDM.

  • What is the need for local storage for a 6s of backup?

Recently upgraded from 4S 6 s. content (4 s backup) seems works very well on the new 6 s, well the first photos of the day and vids (taken with 4) opens at all on the 6s this question seems however put himself to the point and he pictures and vids now works as it should.

But to upgrade the 6s in the last iOS I need to make a backup of the 6s (of the same content, as has been in the 4 backup). All of a sudden, there is not enough space on my hard drive to a backup (even if it wasn't a problem with the same content on the 4S). Any help most appreciated :-) prefer not to start deleting or moving files, especially since I don't know how much space is necessary...

What amount of space 6 is used, and how much you have available for backup. If the first is greater than the second, it does not work.

  • Local storage - lack of space for the backup snapshot?

    Hi all

My apologies if this is an obvious question, but I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on a question I have about our ESXi server.

We run ESXi on a Dell PowerEdge 1950 III with 16 GB Ram and 200 GB RAID 5 15 K RPM SAS for local storage - we do not have a requirement for a SAN, etc. and I understand how 'best practice' implementation of ESXi and that local storage is not recommended.

    Our question is:

We are running very low on the amount of local storage on the server and we use a Perl script every night to create a snapshot of a VM only we want to save that copies the original VM on a separate NAS device files. Apart from slow performance, this configuration works well for us. However, during the backup of the file snapshot obviously grew up with changes that are made and once the backup is complete he writes these returns to the original vmdk file (or so I think). Can anyone tell what would happen if we managed to create a snapshot at the beginning of the backup, but the server ran out of space before the backup finishes and commit the change snapshot... it would seriously damage our original server vmdk?

If you would like more information on our installation program please let me know but I would like some advice before embark us on this... Thanks in advance.

    Stuart Little

If the volume is running out of space, even if you have an active member of snapshot on a virtual computer it stops running (the VM will crash) and you will not be able to commit the snapshot (free space is needed for this). Always avoid the chance of a filling volume, especially if you are using snapshots, while you probably won't lose data if you handle it properly (move the virtual machine to a volume with storage or free space before attempting to commit the snap) you will have at least virtual machine downtime.

  • All local storage does not appear

    Greetings to all

We have a new Dell with ESXi5.1 Server preloaded.

He has installed locally 6 x 300 GB SAS disks. There is no external storage.

When I go into a store of configuration data, it shows only ~1.1TB of storage. (see att)

No idea why the other ~ 600 GB of storage does not appear.

It has something to do with Dell configuration a LUN with only 1.1 TB?

If so is there a way for me to vCenterServer5.1 for local storage LUN configuration?

    Thanks in advance

  • How to configure and use the local storage dirve and usb

My company bought a server DMM cisco as well as 10 players of 4310 g dmp.  I tried to work on mine here to get it all working.  Let me expose what we would do first before to get into the details.

The cental DMM will it play any content and be used to create and manage the content here at company wehre I am.  However my boss wants to send dmp individual players (4310 g) out to our factories across the country.  He wants me to be able to creat content or allow a person managing the exact address to edit the content and then push the content from the server DMM to corporate local DPM record either on local storage or attached thumb order.  I guess my questions on what are the following.

    (1) is it necessary to push the content locally for playback?  Willingness to play the content of our dmm on the wan to do lots of traffic?  Presentations could be as simple as a welcome page based presentation playing images video and flash.

    (2) based on local content would be a wise decision I'll have to see exactly how this is done poorly.  In the settings of the dmp, I see the setting of local storage and turned it on and set to read/write.  In regard to the command of thumb gose exactly how I implement that so that DPM can see?  I plug to the back of the drive, and it seems that it is active but the management console of the player I don't see anyway to actaully see if she knows the USB.

    (3) how will push the content for local storage and control of the DMM thumb?  It looks like I can send things to the storage internal if package transfer and or advanced/DPM deployment tasks or server file.  What exactly is the difference between these two?

    (4) Lastly how I actually play the local content of the dmp?  Can I set this up on a schedule of the dmm just like I would if he played the local dmm?

I searched through the documentation, but I have not found any good docs who are clear to actually how to do these things.  So, any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Glen,

Here are the answers to your questions

    1) is it nessesary to push the content locally for playback?  Will  playing content from our dmm over the wan be to much traffic?   Presentations could be as simple as a basic welcome page to a  presentation playing video and flash images.

It is not required to push the content locally, you can also play the DMM directly. The main advantage of playing on the spot, is that you can transfer the videos several hours or days before the presentation begins to be played if you deploy content off hours and then, when he's ready to start playing the new presentation.

If you play directly the content of the DMM, the content will be transferred at the time of the DMP starts playback. This may fail if the WAN link is saturated at that time here.

    2) If pushing the content local would be a wise decision I am having  difficulty seeing exactly how this is done.  In the dmp settings I see  the local storage setting and have it turned on and set to read/write.   As far as the thumb drive gose how exactly to I set that up so the dmp  can see it?  I plug it in the back of the player and it looks like it's  active but from the management console of the player I do not see any  way to actaully see if it knows about the usb thumb drive.

You don't need to do anything to enable USB storage, simply plug it in. To confirm that the DMP is able to see it properly, the simplest way is to connect to the DPM via FTP and confirm that he has a «usb_2» directory This "usb_2" directory, where is the USB drive is mapped.

    3) how will I push the content to the local storage and the thumb drive  from the DMM?  It looks like I can send things to the internal storage  though the advanced tasks/deployment package and or file transfer to DMP  or server.  What exactly is the differnce between these two?

The task of "File transfer" will just do this, transfer a file to the DMP. The deployment package is smarter and will transfer all the contents of a presentation and organize them in a structure that can be used to read the content locally. You should always use the deployment package.

    4) finally how will I actually play the content from the local dmp?  Can  I set this up on a schedual from the dmm just like I would if it was  playing from the local dmm?

Yes, she may be scheduled as any other presentation.

I suggest you have a look at the link below. He explains the steps required to configure the deployment package and read the content deployed with it.

    http://www.Cisco.com/en/us/docs/video/digital_media_systems/5_x/5_2/DMM/user/guide/DMP/CDs.html#wp2188026

I hope everything is clear now, but if you have any questions, let me know. I'll try to answer.

  • vSphere 6, impossible to use FT with local storage

    Hi guys,.

Now that I understand that when you turn on FT without storage shared in any data warehouse results are displayed in dialog FT in the web client, I met a different problem (so the discussion topic).

When I turn on FT for a virtual machine that is on the local storage, I'm now able to select data warehouses, but when I select the local storage for the secondary virtual machine, I get a lot of mistakes which tell me the secondary host cannot reach the .vmx file (of course - this is why I need shared storage - for these small files). Shouldn t FT copy the .vmx and all that has to be shared in the right place, because I said where it is? I need to move my VM to a shared storage, then move my VMDK and stuff for local storage manually?

Here is a screenshot of the dialog box:

    Turn On FT Dialog.jpg

Here are the current hardware configuration:

    ESX1:

    -IP: 192.168.220.51

    -Data warehouses: ESX1-LocalStorage and NFS

    ESX2:

    -IP: 192.168.220.52

    -Data warehouses: ESX2-LocalStorage and NFS

My primary VM for FT is on ESX2 and try to get my high school on ESX1.

    Thank you!

When I read about the new features of FT and it also replicates the storage, I also expect the ability to place FT VMs on non-shared storage. However, it seems that this is not an option (maybe in a later version, who knows).

  • Flash does not work in FF26, it works in Chrome and IE. I reinstalled FF and Flash several times. I can't adjust the setting of local storage for Flash either.

Flash does not work on some web sites. I never had a problem before with flash on FF in the nearly 15 years that I've used FF. Recently it has stopped working for some reason any and on some flash sites does not, NHL.com and site of kid Herotopia being just two of them. I updated FF, Adobe flash, the reinstalled version them repeatedly deleted all the files that have been stored on my laptop; that is, profiles, saved favorite nothing that I could find in user accounts and in the local app, low local and roaming data folders. What is strange, is that I can't set the local storage for flash either. When I visit the Adobe site to view the Adobe Flash Player Settings Manager I can move the scroll bar, but cannot check the: allow third-party flash content to store data on your computer. I can't do it on a Web site where the flash does not work. When I try and it changed on any site that it goes back to zero. Not sure if it is a part of the problem. I got tired of many suggestions on the pages of material here, but nothing works. I even tried this http://forums.adobe.com/message/4566499#4566499#4566499

The other strange thing is that I used to get the "warning: script does not" prompt that displays "a script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding." You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script ends. "sometimes when I would buy on Macy's.com. This is the only site that it happened.
I know I have only little technical knowledge, but I have tried to figure this out for a few days and do not know what is happening. The only thing I can think is that I somewhere files corrupted causing this problem. I have just updated to Windows 8.1 tonight in the hope that can help, but nothing helped. I would be very disappointing if I couldn't use FF or must go back using Chrome and FF.
Sorry for the posting long but no solution would be much appreciated.

  • HP ProLiant DL160 - cannot create the data with local storage (controller, no RAID) store

Hi all. I appreciate your time and comments.

Using VMware ESXi (initially), installation (VMware ESXi 5.5.0, 1331820) will very well (install on USB). Able to enter in the console of the vSphere Client, everything seems normal. Any attempt to use local storage, however, is filled with this error message: http://i.imgur.com/40ySsOS.png

"It was not correct to specified parameters. Vim.Host.DiskPartitionInfo.spec"-" 'HostStorageSystem.ComputerDiskPartitionInfo' call for object 'storage system' on ESXi "< ip address >" failed. "

I tried both the base (from VMware) installation disc and the "Custom" (HP) HP installation disk. Both have the same problem: all facilities, but local disks - as seen while - are not able to serve local storage. It worked very well (previous incarnation was as Server 2003 file server, no reported\noticed questions). It's not under warranty, its going to be used as a laboratory server. All this seems to work well.

    Specifics:

    HP DL160 G6

Storage card: ICH10 6 Port SATA AHCI Controller

    Discs: 3 G MDL 500 GB 7200

Controller and the disks are perceived by the system: http://i.imgur.com/3PAKQHL.png

Can someone point me in the right direction on what to go here? Research on the error messages do not lead to a lot of help. I'll get more pending. I would be grateful.

This could be a problem with the current data on the disk. I suggest clean you the partition info using the DD explained to the KB VMware: Troubleshooting in the add storage Wizard error: cannot read this disk partition information to see if that solves the problem.

  • Local storage for ESXi - SD USB or a traditional hard drive

We will replace our ESX host soon with new hardware and I'm on the fence about the use of a player USB SD 4 GB or traditional hard drives in a RAID. Obviously, the reader SD has its advantages, namely its speed and reliability, but is reliable enough to give up using redundant hard drives?

As someone mentioned previously, we spend much of our time concerned with our redundant hard disks, expecting to fail. Several times the failure is related to moving parts in the drive also. SD readers have the pleasure of having no moving parts to wear out or fail. But what good are they?

Sells the dealer that I spoke with them for 3 years and never heard of a failure. His $62 for 4 GB, so it's not a bottom of the line edit. It is designed to be in a HP DL380G7, once again, I doubt that it is a lower end model.

I'm leaning toward the SD drive rather than traditional drives, but I wanted to get feedback from others who may have used this before configuration. I'm looking for the successes and failures (and the reason for the failure).

4 GB is enough for installation (ESXi 4.1) and I have not any more local storage as VM is on the shared storage and the assistance as AppSpeed and esXpress VM program I can also install it on the shared storage (where in our current datacenter these are installed on the local storage). Or should I worry about this size with respect to logging or something else?

    Thanks in advance, please discuss.

    Eduard Tieseler

I had a fight 100 ESX hosts running by USB - only questions I ever had were with the original green USB keys that HP provided in the first days of ESXi on USB.

I like the approach of USB for several reasons:

    1. no local physical disk required, less moving parts = less material problems

    2. If you have local physical disks, you can use these as the dumping grounds for the ISOs etc.

    3. If rebuilding a server, I can remove the old USB key and press a new - and recover simply by replacing the OLD USB key

    4. I can pre-generate a USB one double key as a method of construction of servers in bulk (not tested on 4.1u1 well)

    5. I've had many many hard drive failures. . USB (except Green HP ones) have never failed on me.

In addition, your syslog problem isn't treally a 0 - practice problem is to get servers to connect to a centralized in any case syslog box (I would even if I used not USB/SD)

Good luck - let us know what you decide.
